Two years ago I was very lonely and didn’t talk with anyone about my feelings. At the time I didn’t have many friends. I wanted someone to share my experiences
and secrets with. I wanted someone to understand me. I started to imagine this friend and often imagined our conversations and what we would do.
Some weeks later we started a new project in school and I was working with
one of my schoolmates. We had never worked together before but we got along well. After the project we started to spend some time together in school. One day we
decided to take a walk. Ever since that walk we’ve been best friends. We listened and really understood each other.
I had wished for a best friend, but the universe gave me so much more. I have met one of my soul mates. We can sense each other, and it just takes one look and we know what the other is thinking. I didn’t think our friendship could grow much
stronger. But now we have known each other for two years and our friendship is

As Wilson Guarin watched the helicopter roaring above, he wondered if the men being lifted into the sky felt the risk had been worth it.
Moments earlier, Guarin and his children had hiked to Hermit Falls in Angeles National Forest, one of the most popular waterfalls in the Los Angeles area. Soon
试卷第 6 页,共 13 页
after they arrived, they saw a man dislocate his shoulder when he jumped into the
rock pool at the base of Hermit Falls. Less than a minute later, another man jumped and appeared to break both his legs. Guarin said the cliff jumpers' intentions were
obvious. They wanted to get a video of themselves and post it to social media.
A thirst among hikers, often inexperienced and under-prepared, to collect
"likes" and shares on Instagram and other social media sites has led to a significant increase in rescue missions by first responders.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff' s Department's Search and Rescue teams
conducted 681 missions in 2017, the largest number in five years. It' s a 38% increase from the 491 rescues they did in 2013.
The teams' leaders say the single largest factor for that increase is people posting videos of extreme activities online. Then, without any thought about the difficulty, others try to recreate their own 15-second version of glory.
On Instagram, posts from visitors venturing to waterfalls and swimming holes in Angeles National Forest and other recreation areas show hikers changed into models, striking seemingly the same poses in the same places.
We shouldn't discourage people from enjoying the outdoors. But many
accidents are avoidable and happen either when people go off trail or ignore official warnings about an area being closed and visit anyway.
Guarin still thinks about the two men he watched hitching helicopter rides to a
hospital. "You get concerned about what people are willing to do - to not have fun. It's risking everything for no reason. "
Well, there are the "likes".
28 .What happened to the two jumpers'
A .They both got badly injured.
B .They were trapped in a rock pool.
C .They were rescued by the Guarins.
D .They were caught in an air crash.
29 .What is the main reason for the increase in the number of rescues
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
A .Hikers are inexperienced and under-prepared.
B .Helicopters are readily available in more areas.
C .Travelers go off trail or ignore official warnings.
D .More people share their extreme activities online.
30 .What do the figures imply in paragraph 4
A .More social rescues are timely and effective.
B .More attention is paid from the social media.
C .More people raise the awareness of self-defense.
D .More public resources are obviously being occupied.
31 .What does Guarin think of the jumpers' action
A .It is not a wise thing to do.
B .It is their own version of glory
C .Watching it online is a lot of fun.
D .Getting "likes" makes it worthwhile.

Now, a study proves that gardens are more than just a pretty place. The study, by researchers at Illinois States University, prove that such gardens can have a
measurable, positive impact on water quality.
Floating gardens are naturally platform built on a frame (框架) of plastic caging, wrapped in coconut husks (椰子壳), and filled in with native plantings. As plants
grow, they extend their roots into the water, growing. On Chicago’s North Branch of the Chicago River, non-profit Urban Rivers and partners are developing a mile-long, floating eco-park. Called the Wild Mile, the re-development of this former industrial canal is Urban River’s important project. As part of the park, floating gardens,
attached to shore, are being fixed.
The primary purpose of the floating gardens is beautification. But the Illinois State team, from the University’s Department of Geology, Geography, and the
Environment, saw an ideal setup for a controlled experiment. “We joined it because it’s the perfect opportunity to see if there’s an influence on water quality,” explains
试卷第 8 页,共 13 页
lead author Abigail Heath.
The study is novel: Previous studies have explored floating gardens’ influence on water quality over time, primarily in wastewater treatment ponds, but not over
space, in moving water. The project also matches well with Urban Rivers’ broader
goals. “The city is interested in bettering water quality,” says Phil Nicodemus, Urban Rivers Director of Research. “Happily, Illinois State got in it.”
Could this small human-made park improve water quality An average of data collected over the course of the study show middle but definitive improvement. For
example, nitrogen (氮) dropped from 4.69 milligrams per liter in surface water to 4.43 milligrams per liter, a drop of about 1 percent.
“Despite how small this garden was there was measurable improvement in
water quality from upstream to downstream,” notes Heath. She and colleagues see this as a model for how larger floating gardens might help improve water in similar
settings. “Even this tiny garden makes a difference,” she says.
32 .What can be inferred from the second paragraph
A .The floating gardens are environmentally friendly.
B .No one can benefit from the project.
C .The floating gardens can help fix the former parks.
D .The Urban Rivers was once an industrial canal.
33 .What is the main reason to build the floating gardens
A .To reduce the waste water.
B .To attract more visitors to the park.
C .To make the surroundings brilliant.
D .To help researchers do the experiment.
34 .What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph4
A .Building the floating gardens.
B .Bettering water quality.
C .Measuring the waste water.
D .Re-developing the former canal.
试卷第 9 页,共 13 页
35 .Which might be the best title for the text

Though you may be surprised by the giant pile of mess you’ve created on your floor, desk, or bed, don’t worry. You’ll find the right place for everything soon enough.

39 . The less things you have, the easier it will be to organize your bedroom.
40 . Now that you’ve organized your room, you can begin to get rid of all the things you don’t need. Throw away the Rubbish box and give the Donate box to the charity organization. The sooner you get rid of or store the other boxes, the

【原文】 W: Hello, everyone. Today I’ll talk about how to improve your pronunciation.
Language researchers say pronunciation and fluency are the biggest barriers, followed by
grammar in effective spoken English. However, most people don’t regard pronunciation as a very important part of communication skills. They’re more focused on vocabulary. One reason is that most people are not even aware of their mispronunciations. So it’s important to first find out the words you mispronounce. You should listen to experts. By experts, I mean those who are less
likely to make pronunciation mistakes. When listening to them, pay attention to words that sound strange. Strange, because you pronounce the same words differently. When you come across such words, check a dictionary to confirm their exact pronunciations. You can also search for
difficult-to-pronounce words and names and make a list of them. The last suggestion is to read

aloud. Now you’ve got the correct pronunciations ofthe words. It’s time to practice reading them every day.
