My name is Alice. Early last year, I was troubled by an anxiety that crippled
( 削弱 ) my ability to do anything. I felt like a storm cloud hung over me. For almost a year I struggled on, constantly staring at this wall that faced me. My perfectionist
tendencies were the main root of this: I wanted to be perfect at whatever I did, which obviously in life is not possible, but it consumed me.
One day, I attended a presentation by wildlife conservationist Grant Brown at
my high school. His presentation not only awed and inspired me, but also helped
emerge an inner desire to make a difference in the world. I joined a pre-presentation dinner with him and that smaller setting allowed me to slowly build up my courage to speak one-on-one with him—an idea that had seemed completely impossible. This
first contact was where my story began.
A month later, Brown invited me to attend the World Youth Wildlife
Conference. Looking back, I now see that this would be the first in a series of timely

opportunities that my old self would have let pass, but that this new and more
confident Alice enthusiastically seized. Shortly after I received his invitation,
applications to join the Youth for Nature and the Youth for Planet groups were sent around through my high school. I decided to commit to completing the applications, and soon I was a part of a growing global team of young people working to protect nature. Each of these new steps continued to grow my confidence.
I am writing this just six months since my journey began and I’ve realised that my biggest obstacle ( 障碍 ) this whole time was myself. It was that voice in the
back of my head telling me that one phrase that has stopped so many people from
reaching their potential: I can’t. They say good things come to those who wait; I say:
grab every opportunity with everything you have and be impatient. After all, nature does not require our patience, but our action.
4 .What was the main cause for Alice’s anxiety
A .Her inability to act her age. B .Her habit of consumption.
C .Her desire to be perfect. D .Her lack of inspiration.
5 .How did Grant Brown’s presentation influence Alice
A .She decided to do something for nature. B .She tasted the sweetness of friendship.
C .She learned about the harm of desire. D .She built up her courage to speak up. 6 .The activities Alice joined in helped her to become more .
A .intelligent B .confident C .innovative D .critical
7 .What can we learn from this passage
A .Practice makes perfect. B .Patience is a cure of anxiety.
C .Action is worry’s worst enemy. D .Everything comes to those who wait.

Malmo in Sweden calls itself “the city of tomorrow”, due to the fact that it has clean energy, fresh architecture, bike paths, and buses that run on recycled food
waste. Recently, the city has started a new campaign to encourage its citizens to pick up their litter-talking rubbish bins with a unique message.
试卷第 5 页,共 12 页
The city’s two talking rubbish bins know that picking up litter means getting
dirty. They reward litter throwers with humorous talks. When the talking bins sense litter being thrown inside, they react with words delivered in a female voice. They’re meant to start conversations about keeping the city’s streets clean from litter.
“The sentences are part of the campaign’s intention to get more people to talk about and pick up litter, which ends up in our streets, squares, and sea,” said Marie Persson, the chief of the city’s roads department. “It’s a new, humorous way and the citizens understand what to do.”
Although the female voice and the comments delivered by the bins are new,
talking rubbish bins have been a Malmo feature for years. Five years ago, the city
ordered 18 talking bins but today only two still speak. During the outbreak of the
pandemic, these talking bins thanked people for social distancing. Now, they’ve been reprogrammed with a more humorous message. The recording features the voice of a famous woman, who prefers to remain unknown.
As one can imagine, this kind of rubbish bin has led to a lot of controversy (争论). Critics (批评家) say nothing about what these talking rubbish bins look like,
what they do and where they are located, but they’re concerned that these bins are
unfair to women. They suggest that the city should replace the female voice with a
gender-neutral (中性的) one. But Persson isn’t taking the bins too seriously. She
thinks that they are intended as an encouragement to people who do the right thing by giving them a laugh and they make a difference.
8 .What are these talking rubbish bins intended to do
A .Get passers-by to be talkative.
B .Entertain the citizens with jokes.
C .Make the city’s environment cleaner.
D .Encourage people to use clean energy.
9 .What can we infer about the talking rubbish bins from Marie Persson’s words A .They will become popular soon in Malmo.
B .They get the department’s message across.
试卷第 6 页,共 12 页
C .They help search for rubbish on the street.
D .They stop the citizens from littering.
10 .What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A .The ways of these bins’ functioning.
B .The bins’ effect on the public health.
C .The short history of talking rubbish bins.
D .The change of the programmed message.
11 .What accounts for the criticism of the talking rubbish bins
A .Their appearance. B .Their function.
C .Their location. D .Their voice.

Our habits define our success. Yet, they seem to be out of our control. Whether you’re talking about breaking bad habits or habit formation, neither is a piece of cake. The psychology behind habit formation is what helps us create new habits and also
helps us break bad ones. If you can understand this psychology, you can fully control what you get used to in life.
Habits are generally only categorized (分类) as good or bad. Most people don’t look beyond these categories and fail to recognize the true power of habits. Our habits play a vital role in our life. From our daily routine to the rate of success, our habits
determine the results for the most part. Unfortunately, we tend to believe that we’re in control of our habits despite it being the other way around.
This is why it is very important to know how habits form. The process is called the habit loop (循环). It has three main components that work together for habit
formation: the cue (提示), the routine, and the reward. The cue is something that
encourages the following behavior. Anything around you that reminds you of the
habit or makes you want to put it in action is the cue. It can be an object, a person, a feeling, an event, a smell, or anything at all.
Next, there’s the routine. Habits aren’t just one action that’s disconnected from the rest of your actions. What comes before and after the habitual behavior is part of
试卷第 7 页,共 12 页
the habit. This is what the routine is.
Whenever a cue triggers your habit, you’ll start following the defined routine that your brain has developed. The entire series of actions will always be the same or very similar, every time the habit is unconsciously put into action.
The reward is whatever outcome you achieve. For example, if your habit helps you feel emotionally better, that is your reward. This is something that your brain
considers to be a positive outcome. Therefore, you unconsciously want to repeat the habit again and again to achieve the satisfaction of the reward.
12 .What does the writer say about habits in the first paragraph
A .Habits are easy to control but difficult to get rid of.
B .Breaking bad habits is easier than forming good ones.
C .Either breaking a bad habit or forming one is not easy.
D .Psychologists can help us develop or get rid of habits.
13 .Which of the following is a reminder of quitting smoking
A .A cut in tax on cigarettes.
B .A ban on smoking in the office.
C .A loss on cigarette sales.
D .A worker in a tobacco company.
14 .What does the underlined word “triggers” in Paragraph 5 mean
A .Breaks down. B .Builds up.
C .Depends on. D .Sets off.
15 .How does the person behave during the formation of a habit
A .He/She repeats a set of activities alike.
B .He/She conducts some independent activities.
C .He/She shows a great sense of satisfaction.
D .He/She follows what he/she feels emotionally right.

My first year living in London was like an adventure. 16 Although I did a
lot of advanced research before we arrived, there are some lessons I learned only after moving to London.
There are few things in life I love more than pancakes. 17 The first time I
ordered pancakes in London, they brought out these tiny and flat pancakes with cream on top. I was really shocked to see these pancakes. After that shocking experience, I
began to find the best American-style pancakes in London.
Of all the things I gave up to move to London, driving was the thing I missed the least. As someone who used to drive hundreds of miles a month for work, I was very delighted to exchange cars for walking and public transit. 18 We can be in central London in 20 minutes without worrying about parking fares.
I’ll never forget the first time I went into central London in August. I was
meeting my husband for lunch, and it was hot. As I walked towards St. Paul’s
Cathedral, I realized there were tourists everywhere! 19 But August was
completely overpowering (压倒性的). So remember to avoid the city center in August.
20 With dozens of museums, theaters, pop-ups, markets, and festivals, you could do something new every night of the week for years on end. Unfortunately,
having 1,000,000 choices of how to spend your free time usually results in analysis paralysis (瘫痪). So I have a list of things to do when we have free time.
A .London starts getting crowded in June and July.
B .There are a profound amount of things to do in London.
C .It’s incredible how much I’ve learned in 12 short months.
D .In some ways, there are no differences between Europe and the US.
E .Sadly, the breakfast fun in Europe and the US is not on the same page.
F .There’s a sense of freedom that comes with living in a well-connected city.
G .From late March to mid-May is the best time to enjoy the flowers in London.

Protect Forests, Protect Ourselves
As we all know, forests play a significant role in our life. On the one hand, forests are home to plants and animals. On the other hand, forests have no-substitutive functions in conserving soil and regulating the climate.
But threats to the forests are growing. So it’s suggested that we should do our best in forest protection. Firstly, we are supposed to reduce the use of wood products. Secondly, it is vital for us to plant more trees. Last but not least, let’s share the importance of forest ecosystems with others and call on people to take action to protect the forests.
Hopefully, with our joint effort, the forests can be restored to their original perfect state!
