Can a photograph open a door to another world Time Travelers: Photographs from the
Gayle Greenhill Collection presents a selection of extraordinary works, each of which offers entry into a moment in photography’s history. These objects transport viewers across geographic and
temporal (时间上的) distances, or into spaces constructed entirely within the boundaries of a photographic print.
Reflecting many styles, approaches, and processes, the works in this exhibition date from photography’s earliest years to the present, ranging from William Henry Fox Talbot’s
investigations with the emerging technology in the mid-1800s to JoAnn Verburg’s representation of the natural landscape in the early 21st century. Some photographs in the exhibition were made for scientific purposes, or to mark a significant event, while others — including those by Julia

Margaret Cameron and Edward Steichen — show that the medium is an artistic creation. Portraits made under diverse circumstances show the complexities of representing the self and others, while experiments in the image, like those by László Moholy-Nagy and Jan Groover, explore
photography’s unique modes of vision.
Honoring a generous gift of photographs to MoMA from Robert F. Greenhill in memory of his wife, Gayle Greenhill, Time Travelers invites extended thought of these objects and the stories they carry. Its photographs present us with people, things, and events outside our own place and
time, in the spirit of photographer Emmet Gowin’s words, “For me, pictures provide a means of holding, intensely, a moment of communication between one human and another.”
1 .Why is the exhibition named “Time Travelers”
A .It presents works from different periods.
B .It features photographs of time-travel themes.
C .It is donated by a person interested in time travel.
D .It includes photographs that show historical events.
2 .What is the goal of the photographs by Cameron and Steichen
A .To serve scientific research. B .To record important events.
C .To express artistic creation. D .To explore self-representation.
3 .Where is this text most likely taken from
A .A science fiction novel. B .A personal travel blog.
C .A photography textbook. D .A museum exhibition guide.

Last month, while on a writing course in Umbria, Italy, I was delighted to watch an elderly couple clean their messy chestnut orchard (栗子园), followed by their energetic sheepdog. The
fallen crop was pulled into a giant fan that blew their jackets back out onto the ground, and then the nuts were sorted by other family members on a conveyor belt in the farmhouse — the good ones to be sold in the shell, the less perfect nuts swiftly dropped into a container for processing.
Later in the week, a truck turned up in the village square to pick up bags from other small
local producers. That evening, I roasted a pan of chestnuts on the fire with new appreciation, while regretting the disappearance from the streets of London of the chestnut sellers of my childhood.
试卷第 4 页,共 13 页
If you’ve never eaten chestnuts hot from the shell, I strongly urge you to seek them out. The vacuum-packed (真空包装的) and ready-cooked sort are, of course, extremely convenient, but
they’re a quite different thing from the sweetly smoky, roasted variety, so fresh that you burn your fingers on them and don’t care.
While the season ends eventually, the chestnuts’ association with Christmas means that net bags of them have already made their annual appearance in greengrocers and supermarkets, no
doubt as much for their decorative value as for their fibre content. Indeed, they were once an important basic food starch in hilly regions like Umbria and Tuscany. To this day, ground
chestnuts pop up in cakes and cookies, breads and soups.
But I’d argue that any such tendency to powderiness is, like so many issues in life, helped by the liberal addition offat, as proven by buttery chestnut frangipane tart, smoky bacon and
cream cheese, and buttery rice with pumpkin. So, if you spot some chestnuts at the shops, go and buy them.
4 .What does the author intend to show by mentioning the sellers in London
A .A preference for food. B .A memory of childhood.
C .Differences between cultures. D .Dissatisfaction with life.
5 .What kind of chestnuts does the author strongly recommend
A .Vacuum-packed. B .Ready-cooked.
C .Freshly-roasted. D .Pre-shelled.
6 .What was the main use of chestnuts in Umbria and Tuscany in the past
A .A decorative item for Christmas.
B .A special ingredient in local desserts.
C .A key source of starch in daily life.
D .A profitable crop for small producers.
7 .What can be the best title for the text
A .Chestnuts: A Bitter Memory
B .Chestnuts: From Orchard to Table
C .My Unforgettable Trip to Umbria
D .The History of Chestnut Growing

As the holiday season gets closer, one category on people’s gift lists is causing increasing concern: products with artificial intelligence. The development has raised new concerns about the dangers smart toys could pose to children, as consumer advocacy groups say AI could harm kids’ safety and development.
“If we look into how these toys are marketed, how they perform, and the fact that there is little research that shows they are beneficial to children—and no regulation of AI toys—it raises a really big red flag,” said Rachel Franz, director of Young Children Thrive Offline.
Last month, those fears were proven true in a scary way when an AI-equipped teddy bear
started discussing bad topics. “We found that the AI was leading the conversation into all kinds of bad topics and probably a lot of content that parents would not want their children to be exposed to,” said Teresa Murray, director of the PIRG (Public Interest Research Group) Consumer
Watchdog.
Murray said AI toys could be particularly dangerous because, whereas earlier smart toys
provided child-programmed responses, a bot can “have a free-flowing conversation with a child
and there are no boundaries, as we found”. That could not only lead to bad conversations, but
children could become attached to a bot rather than a person or imaginary friend, which could hurt their development, said Jacqueline Woolley, director of the Children’s Research Center at the
University of Texas at Austin. “I worry about inappropriate bonding,” Woolley said.
Despite such concerns, PIRG is not calling for a ban on AI toys, which could have
educational value, such as helping children learn a second language or state capitals, Murray said.
More independent research is needed to ensure the products are safe for children and, until that is done, they should be pulled from shelves, Franz said. “We’re very interested in learning the concrete steps companies will take to ensure their AI products are not actually used by kids who
will surely recognize and be attracted to the brands.”
8 .What does the underlined phrase “red flag” probably mean in paragraph 2
A .Clear warning sign. B .Potential hidden risk.
C .New research direction. D .Communication method.
9 .Why may AI toys be risky for kids according to Murray
A .They are sold to younger children.
试卷第 6 页,共 13 页
B .They are expensive and short-lived.
C .They collect more data from children.
D .They may bring up unsuitable topics.
10 .What is PIRG’s attitude toward AI toys
A .Objective. B .Opposed. C .Approving. D .Indifferent.
11 .What is Franz’s suggestion regarding AI toys
A .They should focus on educational topics.
B .They should be removed until proven safe.
C .They should include user guides for parents.
D .They should be monitored by tech companies.

New research from Syracuse University, New York, has found that weight training can
reactivate fast motor neurons (运动神经元) that decline with age, potentially preventing falls for the elderly.
The study, published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, notes that falls are the
leading cause of injury in adults aged 65 and older. Every year, millions of elderly people fall and get head injuries or long-term disabilities. In serious cases, these accidents can even cause death, bringing heavy pressure to both individuals and global healthcare systems.
The reason for this is that our muscles gradually weaken with age, which in turn slows
down the neuromuscular response. This is called neuro-muscular decrement (功能衰退), and is
common for adults in their 70s and 80s. It slows down their reaction time and reduces their muscle control — reasons that directly make it more likely for them to lose balance and fall.
However, in a recently published study that specifically explored the effects of resistance training on nerve conduction velocity (NCV), a measure of how quickly electrical signals travel along a nerve. With a group of 48 adults between the ages of 18—84, researchers recorded NCV in the forearm, both before and after four weeks of handgrip resistance training. The results
showed that every senior improved their nerve conduction after taking part in weight training.
“When nerve conduction for fast-twitch fibers (快肌纤维) is damaged, your power and the speed activated by these fibers will decrease,” says researcher Jason Fried. “These neurons are
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
supposed to drive fast-twitch muscle fibers. If you cannot reactivate these neurons, you won’t be able to regain that fast movement speed — and this has important implications, because it can
prevent a simple slip or trip from turning into a bad fall.”
12 .Why are elderly people over 65 likely to fall
A .Their fast-twitch fibers are mostly lost.
B .Their bones are weaker than young people’s.
C .They have decreased neuro-muscular function.
D .They are more likely to do intense weight training.
13 .How did the recent study obtain its result
A .By comparing data.
B .By interviewing seniors.
C .By analyzing medical records.
D .By reviewing previous studies.
14 .What does the damage of fast-twitch nerve conduction result in
A .Increased risk of heart disease.
B .Slower recovery from injuries.
C .Improved neuro-muscular response.
D .Reduced muscle power and activation speed.
15 .What is the positive significance of this research
A .To promote weight training.
B .To uncover the secret of aging.
C .To give guidance to the weightlifters.
D .To offer a way to prevent the elderly falling.

Most of us are pretty good at celebrating our big win. But what about all the small wins along the way The truth is that life is made up of little moments. So, here are five ways to
acknowledge and celebrate your wins, no matter the size.
试卷第 8 页,共 13 页
Pause (暂停) and slow down. When you achieve a small win, it can be easy to skip the celebration to tackle your next to-do list, or downplay the progress you’ve made. 16 This gives your brain time to absorb what you’ve accomplished, and reminds you that progress, however small, still counts.
Write a thank-you note. 17 Make the most of this by writing a letter, email, or
text message to someone who has helped you achieve your small win. This could be a loved one, a colleague, or even a stranger — they really reinforce the importance of these small moments.
Capture the moment. Take a photo, make a voice note, or record a video to document how you feel when you reach your milestone. These quick records will be helpful on harder days.
18
Share with friends. Sometimes, the things we count as successes aren’t necessarily what
others celebrate — they might be overlooked by others. 19 Whether it’s finally making that doctor’s appointment, or nailing (顺利完成) the gift exchange with folks who brighten your day, treat them to coffee or a walk to acknowledge the significance of your win.
20 If you’re working on smaller goals to reach a long-term end, tracking your
progress can be a great way to stay motivated. For example, if you’re training for a marathon,
write down the details of every run on a whiteboard, or a large sheet of paper on your wall. Add a running-themed sticker after every run to get that win feeling!
A .Review your goals.
B .Create a “win” wall.
C .So don’t hold back from sharing your win.
D .Sharing small wins can sometimes make others feel pressured to keep up.
E .Expressing gratitude has many benefits, from stress relief to improved sleep.
F .Instead, practice intentionally pausing and slowing down after your small win.
G .Over time, you’ll build a collection of moments that show just how far you’ve come.

Ernest loved stories very much — he enjoyed hearing them, but he liked telling them even more. As a young boy in Ireland, his mother read him tales of small magical beings living near the family home, and he would take his eight sisters to explore the garden behind their big house.
Each evening, their father read poems to the children, and the afternoons were spent
looking through books in his study, finding all kinds of interesting things. One day, Ernest showed his sister Kathleen a picture of London’s tall stone column (纪念柱), built after the Great Fire of the city, and as she read about it, he turned the pages of a large book of maps, seeing many
exciting places and smiling as he said he would visit them all someday.
At the age often, Ernest’s life changed when his family moved to England — a chance to
see London and the tall stone column he’d read about, a dream that felt like it was coming true. By thirteen, he was a student at Dulwich College, but the classes made him feel unhappy; he wanted to learn about faraway lands.
Ernest’s attention was often drawn to The Boy’s Own Paper, a magazine full of stories
about ship accidents and long trips around the world. One day, he stopped at a shop window to
look at its new issue, which had a great picture on the cover. He got to school late because of this,

and when the headmaster asked him why, Ernest made up a story about helping put out a fire from a broken-down bus, a lie that made the headmaster laugh, since he knew Ernest loved telling such stories.
At school, Ernest tried hard to pay attention, but his mind was always on the new magazine. When his father asked him if he really loved such stories, Ernest said firmly that he wanted to
become a great sailor and adventurer like Captain Nemo, rejecting his father’s idea that he should become a doctor, and keeping his dream of sailing the seas alive.

12.细节理解题。根据第三段“The reason for this is that our muscles gradually weaken with age, which in turn slows down the neuromuscular response. This is called neuro-muscular decrement
(功能衰退), and is common for adults in their 70s and 80s. It slows down their reaction time and reduces their muscle control — reasons that directly make it more likely for them to lose balance and fall.(其原因在于,随着年龄的增长,我们的肌肉会逐渐变弱,这进而会减缓神经肌肉反应。

electrical signals travel along a nerve. With a group of 48 adults between the ages of 18—84,
researchers recorded NCV in the forearm, both before and after four weeks of handgrip resistance training. The results showed that every senior improved their nerve conduction after taking part in weight training.( 然而,在最近发表的一项专门探讨力量训练对神经传导速度(NCV)影响的研究中,神经传导速度是一种衡量电信号沿神经传播速度的指标。 故选 A。
14.细节理解题。根据第五段 Jason Fried 的表述“When nerve conduction for fast-twitch fibers is damaged, your power and the speed activated by these fibers will decrease.(当快肌纤维的神经传导受损时,这些纤维所激活的力量和速度都会降低。)”可知,快肌神经传导丧失会导致肌肉力量和激活速度下降。故选 D。
15 .推理判断题。根据文章大意以及文章开篇即指出研究发现“New research from Syracuse University, New York, has found that weight training can reactivate fast motor neurons that
decline with age, potentially preventing falls for the elderly.( 纽约雪城大学的新研究发现,力量训练能够激活随着年龄增长而衰退的快速运动神经元,从而有可能预防老年人摔倒。)”可推知,研究的积极意义是提供一种方法来预防老年人摔倒。故选 D。

I’m sorry to hear that you’re feeling stressed about directing the English short play, but I’m sure you’ll do well!
When I participated in our class show last year, I found dividing tasks by strengths really helpful to those good at writing to polish lines and those creative classmates to design scenes. For better effects, try adding a small interactive part, like letting the audience vote for a plot turn, or you can use short videos as backgrounds to set the mood.
You’re organized and creative, so don’t worry too much. Just communicate openly with your team, and everything will go smoothly. Looking forward to watching your wonderful
performance!
