On hot summer days, ice cream sounds like a better choice than a bowl of hot noodles. In the past, ancient Chinese people also enjoyed “ice cream” in summer. Let’s look at some cool snacks they enjoyed.
Su shan is a dish that looks like crushed (捣碎的) ice with milk and butter. Sometimes, flowers and leaves were put on Su shan to make it nice. In the Tang Dynasty, only the king’s family and rich people were lucky enough to enjoy this special snack in summer. Many experts believe Su shan was an early form of ice cream.
In the Tang Dynasty, it was very common for rich people to use iceboxes to store ice in summer. At that time, people either drank ice water or ate shaved ice (刨冰). Later, in the Song Dynasty, people could easily buy iced drinks on the street. Ice water was often sold with mung beans or licorice (绿豆或甘草) to help people avoid getting sick from the heat.
The weather in the Yellow River area during the Tang Dynasty was hotter and wetter than it is today. So many cherry (樱桃) trees grew there at that time. The fruit was common in early summer and people often added cheese and cane syrup (甘蔗糖浆) to the cherries. Being late also affected his friendships. When his best friend invited him to his 14th birthday party, Raheel promised to arrive on time. But he got stuck playing a video game and showed up 40 minutes late—missing the cake-cutting and some fun games. His friend was upset and stopped talking to him for a while.
One day, Raheel wanted to join a singing competition in his neighborhood. He had an amazing voice, and he was happy when he made it to the final round. His family and friends were excited and really hoped he would win.

Have you ever had such an experience You did some exercise the day before, and the next morning, even a small movement like sitting up in bed would cause muscle (肌肉) soreness. Now you want to exercise again, but you’re wondering: Can I still exercise when I’m so sore Well, there is no exact answer; it depends.
Experts explain that soreness isn’t always bad. It’s normal to feel sore when you train hard or challenge your muscles in new ways. It is known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS, 延迟性肌肉酸痛). It usually reaches the peak (顶峰) within 48 hours and goes away in 72 hours. It happens because hard or new exercises break down muscle tissue (组织). Then your body tries to repair it, which causes soreness. Don’t worry — this breakdown helps your muscles grow stronger during the repair process.
What you should pay attention to is just how sore you feel. Rick Richey, a sports medicine teacher, says, “If your soreness is mild, it’s okay to exercise. You just need to go easier, like lifting lighter weights or running slower.”
However, if your soreness is more than a mild ache (疼痛), take a break. “Your body is smart — it tells you to stop,” Richey says. What’s more, exercising with super-sore muscles isn’t helpful. Sore muscles are not able to produce as much force and usually get tired more quickly. Richey says serious soreness can prevent you from getting better, and it might even make you hurt yourself.
If you really want to exercise, work on the muscles that don’t ache. For example, if your arms ache, exercise your legs. “If you’re sore in one muscle, look for other parts of your body you can exercise,” Richey says.
31.How does the writer start the passage
A. By sharing a scientific study.
B. By describing a personal experience.
C. By giving advice on how to exercise.
D. By explaining the importance of exercising.
32.Which graph (图表) can show the change about DOMS in 72 hours
A. B.
C. D.
33.What does the underlined word “mild” mean
A. not serious B. getting worse C. lasting long D. hard to stand
34.Why is it not helpful to exercise with super-sore muscles
A. Because they may never recover.
B. Because they will get tired faster.
C. Because they can produce more force.
D. Because they will influence your sleep.
35.What is the purpose of the passage
A. To explain what causes DOMS.
B. To discuss whether to exercise with sore muscles.
C. To tell readers how to repair sore muscles quickly.
D. To introduce different ways to challenge your muscles.
