Come on in, Chef
In China, some young people now work as “on-demand chefs” (上门厨师). If families are too tired to cook, they can invite these chefs to their homes. This is healthier than ordering takeout (外卖).
Ding Yuqing, a 23-year-old college student, is a chef. She started by posting photos of her dishes online. To her surprise, many people sent her messages asking, “Can you cook for us ” Now she works near her school. Before cooking, she talks to clients ( 客 户 ) about food they like. Then she asks them to buy ingredients (食材) themselves. After cooking, she cleans the kitchen and takes out the trash. For three dishes and one soup, she gets 80—100 yuan.
This is part of China’s on-demand economy (按需经济). It creates flexible (灵活的) jobs and has won people’s hearts by meeting their special needs. But this new work needs better laws and protection for workers.
1.Does Ding Yuqing need to buy ingredients for her clients (不超过5个词)
2.How did Ding Yuqing start her business (不超过10个词)
3.What are the challenges of the on-demand economy (不超过10个词)
My name is Lin Tao. I’m in Grade Eight. Recently, our school held a career talk and I was very interested in it. After the talk, I have a clear career dream—I want to be a computer engineer.
I like computers very much. I often spend my free time learning computer knowledge and playing computer games. I’m good at math and science, which are very important for a computer engineer. My computer teacher said that I have a talent for computer learning and he encouraged me to stick to my dream.
To be a good computer engineer, I know I need to face many growing pains and work hard to overcome them. First, I need to improve my English, because many computer books and materials are in English. I used to be weak in English, so I read English articles every morning and do more exercises after school. Now my English has improved a lot. Second, I need to learn more computer skills. I take a computer course on weekends and I practice programming (编程) every day. Sometimes I can’t work out a programming problem and I feel upset, but I never give up. I ask my computer teacher for help and keep trying until I solve it.
Through these efforts, I have got a lot of gains. I have become more hard-working and patient. I also learn that no dream is too big and no effort is too small. I know there are still many difficulties ahead, but I will keep working hard. I believe that my growing pains will turn into gains and I will realize my career dream one day.

In 2026, our school held a “Dream Career & Growth Story” sharing meeting. Three students shared their experiences of chasing career dreams and overcoming growing pains.
Zhao Yan, 14: “My dream is to be a doctor. My grandmother was seriously ill last year, and the doctors saved her life. Since then, I’ve wanted to help sick people. But my growing pain is that I’m afraid of seeing blood. To get over this, I started reading medical books and watching educational videos about medicine. I also volunteered at a community clinic to get used to medical scenes. Now, I’m not afraid anymore. My gain is that I’ve learned to be brave and responsible.”
Li Ming, 13: “I want to be a teacher. I love working with children and sharing knowledge. But I’m very shy—I can’t even answer questions in class. My English teacher suggested I join the debate club. At first, I was nervous, but I kept practicing. Now, I can speak in front of the whole school. I’ve gained confidence and communication skills. I know that being a teacher requires courage to speak, and I’m getting closer to my dream.”
Chen Xi, 14: “My dream is to be a painter. I love drawing, but my parents didn’t support me at first. They thought drawing would affect my study. This was my biggest growing pain. I talked to my parents seriously, showing them my paintings and promising to balance study and drawing. I made a schedule to finish homework first and then draw for 30 minutes every day. Gradually, my parents saw my progress in both study and drawing, and they started to support me. My gain is that I’ve learned to communicate with others and keep my promises.”
All three students agreed that growing pains are necessary for growth. They encourage every teenager to hold onto their dreams and face difficulties bravely.

Every year, wildfires destroy tens of thousands of square kilometres of forest land. People lose their homes and some are hurt or even killed. Smokejumpers help stop this.
Smokejumpers are special firefighters. Some fires are in hard-to-reach areas, such as in the middle of a mountain forest. These firefighters jump from planes or are lowered into those areas by helicopter.
When they arrive, smokejumpers first check the land and decide how to fight the fire. Their main duty is to prevent the fire from spreading until other firefighters arrive. Smokejumpers use shovels or axes to clear the land of burnable things, like dry grass and dead trees. They carry water with them too, but not a lot.
Although most smokejumpers are men, more women are joining now. The most important factors are height and weight. Smokejumpers in the US, for example, must be between 54 and 91 kilograms. This way, they don't get blown away by the strong winds or get hurt when they land. Smokejumpers also need to know how to survive in the wild. In Russia, many smokejumpers know how to find food in the forest and can even make simple furniture from trees.
The work is dangerous, and the working hours are long. But for these firefighters, smokejumping isn’t just a job. They love being able to jump out of planes, fight fires and live in the forest. Wang Yaming is a Chinese smokejumper. He says, “This is the best job for tough guys.”

新素材 [小伙为救同学缺考] Imagine you are on your way to take a very important exam. Suddenly, one of your classmates falls down beside you. This is exactly what happened to Jiang Zhaopeng, a 17-year-old student at a vocational school in Shandong on 10th May 2025. Jiang was on his way to take the Shandong Provincial Spring College Entrance Examination, which is a college entrance exam in China. His classmate had a heart problem and stopped breathing. Jiang didn’t think twice. He quickly used the CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation, 心肺复苏) skills he learned at school to help his classmate. With the help of the driver, they drove to the hospital in just 7 minutes. They even ran through six red lights on the way. In the end, Jiang’s classmate got better, but Jiang missed his Chinese exam.
This story became very popular on the Internet. More than 2 million people online said Jiang was a hero. They said, “He passed the most important test in life.” On 14th May, the Shandong Education Authority decided to give Jiang a special make-up exam. They used backup test papers to ensure fairness. Both Jiang and the driver, Wang Tao, got “Bravery Certificates” from the local government.
Teachers and experts said this showed how useful the first-aid skills we learned in school could be. These skills can help save lives in real emergencies (突发事件). When people asked Jiang about missing the exam, he said, “We can take exams again, but we can’t bring a life back if it’s gone.”
This event teaches us that being kind is more important than getting good grades. As an expert said, “Exams test our knowledge, but Jiang’s decision showed his good character, and he did very well in that test.” Jiang’s story tells us that saving someone’s life is the biggest success of all.

You may know about “junk food” (垃圾食品) like French fries, hamburgers and so on. But do you know about “junk sleep”
A British survey (调查) shows that there are many electronic products (电子产品) in kids’ bedrooms. They are having a really bad influence on kids’ sleep.
Scientists chose 1,000 British kids from 12 to 16 to do the survey. They found that 50% of the kids got just 4 to 7 hours’ sleep every day. But doctors say they need 8 to 9 hours.
Almost 25% of the kids said they often fell asleep while they were watching TV, listening to music or using other electronic products.
“This is very worrying,” said Dr. Chris, a British professor. “We call it junk sleep. It means you don’t get enough sleep and the quality of the sleep is low too.” The survey found that quite a few of the kids felt tired each day because of the junk sleep, especially girls between 13 and 16. Nearly all the kids have a phone, music player or TV in their bedrooms. And lots of them have all three.
Dr. Chris suggested that parents should help their children keep away from electronic products. They can spend more time with their children, taking part in reading or sports.

Many people, like Andy, worry too much about what others think of them. At school, Andy never answers questions because he is afraid of making mistakes. He even works hard to make people think he’s good enough.
It’s normal to care about what others think, but we shouldn’t let it control our lives. The key is to know we live for ourselves, not for others. There are several ways to go about doing this.
First, we should remember that we are often our own biggest judges(裁判). If we have a low opinion of ourselves, then we think that others feel the same way about us. To get over this, we should learn to “love ourselves”. We can do what we like to do and help others at the same time. For example, if you are book lovers, try to volunteer to read for kids.
Second, we can’t control how others think of us. Instead of trying to please everyone, we should learn about what makes us different. Why not take up a hobby like playing basketball In this way, we can lower our stress and have a good time in our free time. However, this doesn’t mean we should ignore(忽视) how we treat others. Listen to others first, even if we disagree. Being kind and respectful is always important.
At the same time, it’s okay to express our own opinions. Remember, winning or losing is not the point. It’s impossible to make everyone think like us. Everyone has different opinions and we’re not trying to start a fight. So, express our own opinions politely. After all, communication is the best way to solve problems.
So, be ourselves, respect others and express our thoughts kindly. Don’t let fear of judgment hold us back!

48.How can we learn to love ourselves
49.What should we do first if we disagree with others

When the bell rang, Matt entered the classroom with a heavy heart. “Hey, Matt,” his best friend Tom greeted him. He and Tom were in the school’s basketball team. “Why the long face Are you still feeling blue about Saturday night’s game ” Tom asked.
“Of course I am,” Matt said quietly. He didn’t dare to look at Tom as he spoke. “I’m really sorry about letting everybody down. The other team got those points because of me.”
“Don’t be too hard on yourself,” Tom said. “Although you pushed their player, it was just an accident. Everyone knows that!”
Tom was a good friend. But Matt knew the referee didn’t share Tom’s opinion. When the referee saw Matt push another player, he gave the other team two free throws. Matt was as shocked as anyone when the accident happened, but it was too late. He couldn’t take it back.
“I guess we have to respect his decision,” Matt said after a while. “But we had a good chance to win until I made that mistake. Why wasn’t I more careful I could just kick myself! I really could.”
“Listen, Matt,” said Tom, “try to look on the bright side. The other team is the best in our area, but our scores were really close. I’m proud of us, and I know our coach and everyone else in our school are as well.”
Matt felt a bit better. “Thanks, Tom. I guess it’s just hard to lose.”
“Hey, you can’t win them all,” said Tom. “It’s more important to learn from your mistakes so that you don’t repeat them in future. We’ll keep working together as a team. One for all, and all for one, right ”

Eyes always on us
Video cameras are everywhere: schools, hospitals and stores. But in recent years, they have made their way into our homes. Many parents set up cameras at home to watch their children’s online classes and homework. Are cameras really helpful What do students think about them
Earlier last year, I liked to lie in bed and watch videos but not study. This made my grades worse. So my parents set up a camera to keep an eye on me. It worked. With the camera watching, I had to do my homework first and make plans for studying at home. When I was alone at home, the camera made me feel safe because I knew that my parents were watching on the other side. My grades improved after a year. — Li Ming When I was in Grade 8, my parents set up a camera in my room. I really didn’t like it because I felt like there were always eyes watching me. I felt so uncomfortable that I couldn’t sleep well at night. Knowing there was a camera around, when my friends came to my home, they would speak quietly and carefully. We couldn’t have pillow (枕头) fights. I was sad, so I asked my parents to take the camera away. They agreed as long as I promised to behave well. I feel happy and free now. — Zhang Hua

In a 1974 interview, Hillary talked about the climb. He said that to do a climb like this, being skilled and experienced in climbing is not enough. “You also need to have enthusiasm (热情). The really good mountaineers that I know never lose the enthusiasm,” he said.

It might be easier these days, with better transport and technology, but back then, a lot of the work needed to be done by people. “It is a team job. The two men who reached the top were completely dependent on the whole team,” he said.
Even though Hillary had a good team and all he needed, he wasn’t sure if they would reach the top. Because of the height, anything can happen, and it can happen really fast. “On a mountain like this, you can never be completely confident,” he said.

Teamwork also works well in other parts of our life. Lab work and group programs require good teamwork skills. In the workplace, working together is also necessary for success, because one person cannot build a railway or control a train station.
Being a team player does not mean that one person should not have any ideas of his own. He doesn’t have to agree with the other team players all the time. A good team member should not be afraid to think of new ideas, even the crazy ones. Those crazy ideas may help the team realize the dreams. ______________
