Back in 2003, Erica Hernandez was just a kid helping 20 adults take care of the beach. They overheard a plan to build a processing station for natural gas 14 miles off the coast of Oxnard. The plant would send over 200 tons of air pollution per year to
Erica’s community. Not only that, the station would take in millions of gallons of
seawater per day to cool its generators, and discharge the water more than 15 degrees centigrade hotter than the surrounding ocean. This hot wastewater would cause
serious harm to the surrounding ecosystem, killing tiny creatures and small fish critical to the survival of marine mammals and fisheries.
Erica cared too much to stay silent. She joined her friends in weekly protests at the office of the natural gas company. Prospects of stopping the project did not look good. The governor was in favor of it, and so were the powerful state commissions that would have to approve it. “The word on the street was that there was nothing we could do.”
Behind the scenes, however, opposition was growing, so Erica became the
spokesperson for the youth of the town. She regularly walked her neighborhood along the route of the proposed pipeline, using a hula hoop to show people the size of the
pipe that would pass by their houses. She talked to the media, and stories about the
dangers ofthe proposed facility began appearing in the press. “We made thousands of phone calls and sent thousands of postcards telling the governor why this facility was a bad idea.” In July 2007, the governor made an unexpected move: He turned down
the project. Erica and her friends won!
As only the second person in her family to go to college, Erica wants to become an environmental lawyer so she can fight for the environment and for the rights of

C .To stress the support from the government. D .To blame the protest on the official’s inaction.
26 .Which of the following can best describe Erica

Now, a study proves that gardens are more than just a pretty place. The study, by researchers at Illinois States University, prove that such gardens can have a
measurable, positive impact on water quality.
Floating gardens are naturally platform built on a frame (框架) of plastic caging, wrapped in coconut husks (椰子壳), and filled in with native plantings. As plants
grow, they extend their roots into the water, growing. On Chicago’s North Branch of the Chicago River, non-profit Urban Rivers and partners are developing a mile-long, floating eco-park. Called the Wild Mile, the re-development of this former industrial canal is Urban River’s important project. As part of the park, floating gardens,
attached to shore, are being fixed.
试卷第 6 页,共 15 页
The primary purpose of the floating gardens is beautification. But the Illinois State team, from the University’s Department of Geology, Geography, and the
Environment, saw an ideal setup for a controlled experiment. “We joined it because it’s the perfect opportunity to see if there’s an influence on water quality,” explains lead author Abigail Heath.
The study is novel: Previous studies have explored floating gardens’ influence on water quality over time, primarily in wastewater treatment ponds, but not over
space, in moving water. The project also matches well with Urban Rivers’ broader
goals. “The city is interested in bettering water quality,” says Phil Nicodemus, Urban Rivers Director of Research. “Happily, Illinois State got in it.”
Could this small human-made park improve water quality An average of data collected over the course of the study show middle but definitive improvement. For
example, nitrogen (氮) dropped from 4.69 milligrams per liter in surface water to 4.43 milligrams per liter, a drop of about 1 percent.
“Despite how small this garden was there was measurable improvement in
water quality from upstream to downstream,” notes Heath. She and colleagues see this as a model for how larger floating gardens might help improve water in similar
settings. “Even this tiny garden makes a difference,” she says.
28 .What can be inferred from the second paragraph
A .The floating gardens are environmentally friendly.
B .No one can benefit from the project.
C .The floating gardens can help fix the former parks.
D .The Urban Rivers was once an industrial canal.
29 .What is the main reason to build the floating gardens
A .To reduce the waste water.
B .To attract more visitors to the park.
C .To make the surroundings brilliant.
D .To help researchers do the experiment.
30 .What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph4
试卷第 7 页,共 15 页
A .Building the floating gardens.
B .Bettering water quality.
C .Measuring the waste water.
D .Re-developing the former canal.
31 .Which might be the best title for the text
A .Floating Gardens: More than Pretty.

Have you ever felt so stressed that you just froze Your body goes still, you can’t feel much but meanwhile, your senses are working extra hard. You know you must act soon, but you just can’t move. This “freezing”, or tonic immobility in academic terms, is an adaptive defense response to stress or danger. When we freeze, our heart rate drops and our blood pressure changes. A flood of hormones (荷尔蒙) spread
quickly, readying us for action. It can all happen within seconds.
While fight-or-flight seems logical for survival, freezing makes us incapable of
acting or making a decision. But is that really all that’s going on Not according to
Prof Karin Roelofs, a neuroscientist who studies freezing at Radboud University.
“Many people think that freezing is a kind of shutdown of the system,” she says.
“What we actually find is that in threatening situations, freezing actually helps gain
more information, prepare actions, and improve perception and decision-making.” It’s a state of being watchful rather than total inactivity.
Importantly, this response can be trained. Roelofs highlights two groups
controlling freezing: street performers keeping extreme stillness — the so-called
living statues, and snipers (狙击手) requiring absolute stillness while making
decisions. Lab research confirms this. A virtual reality shooting game showed players with stronger freezing responses performed better and decided faster. Freezing
actually helps reduce brain noise and thus leads to faster decisions.
试卷第 8 页,共 15 页
But let’s say you’re not a sniper, or don’t spend your weekends as a living statue. What if you’re about to take an exam or lead a big business meeting Those situations involving social pressure, may not be life or death, but still can cause freezing. The
key is to use this response through training, particularly slow and rhythmic (有节奏的) breathing. Instead of feeling out of control, you can master it and — sniper or not — take your best shot.
32 .What do we know about tonic immobility
A .It happens when we sleep. B .It raises our blood pressure.
C .It’s a natural bodily reaction. D .It results from heart failure.
33 .What does Karin Roelofs think of freezing
A .It helps us reduce pressure. B .It stops our senses working.
C .It is necessary for survival. D .It prepares our body for action.
34 .How does the author support his idea in Paragraph 4
A .By giving examples. B .By analyzing causes.
C .By making a contrast. D .By explaining a process.
35 .What is the purpose of writing the text
A .To help us apply trained breathing. B .To show the real function of freezing.
C.To introduce a new scientific finding. D.To clarify misunderstanding of freezing.

If you have ever felt like the odd one out, the misunderstood artist, or the rebel (叛逆者) without a cause in your family, you have likely worn the “black sheep” title. The term is not just a catchy phrase but a lived experience for many. 36
Being the black sheep can come with its share of psychological challenges. One may feel left out, misunderstood and even rejected. Luckily, there are ways to heal
from a childhood spent as the black sheep.
Begin by embracing your individuality. You need to recognize that your
试卷第 9 页,共 15 页
differences are not weaknesses but strengths. 37 And there is enormous value in that. So, celebrate your distinct path and all the qualities that set you apart.
Setting healthy boundaries is crucial to your relationship. It is okay to say no, to distance yourself from negative energy, and to choose your own well-being. 38
Plus, you’d better find a community of like-minded individuals, which can
provide great support. Sharing experiences in an understanding environment can be remarkably healing. 39 Still, sometimes, the impact of growing up as the black sheep can be intense, affecting one’s mental health and relationships.
40 Therapy provides a safe space to explore your feelings, understand the dynamics that shaped your role within the family, and develop strategies to move
forward in a healthy way.
A .Your unique viewpoints and choices define who you are.
B .Therefore, reconciling (和解) with your family should be your goal.
C .After all, there are many folks out there who can relate to your journey.

I had always been the quietest member of our school’s drama club. My world was backstage, between the tall, heavy curtains and the busy equipment tables.
Among the lights and props, I knew exactly where everything was and what to do. While others shone during rehearsals (排练), I found my place quietly supporting them from behind the scenes, feeling happy to be a helpful part of the team.
My drama teacher, Ms. Jenkins, noticed this. She had a way of seeing the efforts that others didn’t. One afternoon, after everyone else had left, she handed me a script (脚本) for the year-end show. “The lead role,” she said, her voice calm and certain. “I believe you have a story inside you, waiting to be told.” Her words were kind but felt like a heavy responsibility, making me stand up straighter without thinking.
My heart sank. The lead role meant speaking alone in front of everyone and standing in the bright spotlight, where I couldn’t hide. “But, Ms. Jenkins,” I
stammered, holding the script tightly in both hands, “I’m not an actor. I work
backstage. I might ruin the play.” The thought of forgetting my lines on stage filled me with a cold fear that made my hands feel stiff.
试卷第 13 页,共 15 页
She smiled gently, and her eyes were warm and encouraging. “Sometimes, the biggest growth happens when we face our fears, not avoid them. Try to read it,” she said, looking right at me, “not just as lines, but as someone’s true feelings.” For days, the script lay unopened on my desk, a constant reminder of my anxiety, and I avoided looking at it. Hearing my confident classmates practice, their clear voices coming
from the hall, only made me feel more like an outsider, as ifI was standing outside a closed door, unsure if I could ever cross the gap between us.

W: Hi, Max. I’m painting a picture of students having fun on the playground. Some students are playing board games; some are talking under the trees; and the others are playing football.
M: Oh, I see myself with the chess piece in hand. Anyway, the colors look fantastic.
W: Thanks! I try to use bright colors to show how lively everyone is. The picture is almost done.

M: Hmm, I dislike it. It is beautiful, but I can’t tell what I am looking at.
W: That’s right. Each painting carries a different message or feeling to an artist. The most important part is expressing himself instead of only making something beautiful.
M: Interesting. You mean an artist can create a popular work by showing his feelings and ideas
W: Exactly. It’s not about looking beautiful. Don’t focus on details and styles the painters create when looking at paintings. Instead, you can try to connect with the artist emotionally.

W: Microplastics are everywhere in our environment. Measuring 50 to 500 micrometers in length, microplastics come from a variety of sources, including large plastics that break down into smaller pieces. Therefore, much remains unknown about the common existence of these materials within the human body, as well as their impact on human health. A research team led by Kieran
Cox studied 26 papers on the amount of microplastics in common foods. Using previously
reported data, the team evaluated the potential consumption of microplastics and calculated annual intake via food and drink at 34,000 to 52,000 particles. The study found that people who drink
only bottled water absorb an additional 90,000 microplastic stick each year, compared to 4000
among those who only drink tap water. But the food and drink that the researchers analyzed
represent 15% of Americans a caloric intake. The team couldn’t account for food groups like
fruits, vegetables and grains. Because there simply is not enough data on their microplastic
content. For those who are worried about microplastic consumption, cutting down bottled water is a good start. But as for the heart of the problem, we have to stop producing and using so much

I remembered Ms. Jenkins’ words: “Just tell the story.” The curtain rose, and the bright lights hit my face. Though still scared, I spoke the first line.
