After decades of working as a food columnist, there were parts of me that were weak, so it was with my brain. It would go blank mid-sentence when I tried to recall a fancy ingredient’s
name. To challenge this old grey matter, I threw myself into a brand-new challenge: sinking a big

sum of money and nearly a year into training for London’s Blue Badge, a tourist guide
qualification recognized and respected internationally. However, it was not a decision I took lightly.
My fellow trainees were wonderfully diverse, from across the globe and various walks of life, ranging from taxi drivers and university lecturers to managers and retired teachers. Our
training was no walk in the park: 12 demanding exams, twice-weekly lectures, day trips to
Canterbury, and the toughest training: guiding on a 60-seat bus in front of my colleagues,
describing buildings without sounding like a satellite navigation (导航) system. At times my head was bursting with tiny details: from the number of steps to St. Paul’s dome (穹顶), even the name of Churchill’s dog!
But eventually, I earned my Blue Badge. I'm not ashamed to say there were tears when the confirmation came through. Now, I still write and take international visitors around London. They arrive with enthusiasm, glass-half-full attitudes and seemingly no jet lag. Things I’ve taken for
granted (准许) over 30 years, such as double-decker buses, pub signs and policemen on horses, are an endless source of delight for them and their questions are wonderfully varied.
This journey has brought back my passion for our capital. Above all, it has added a new string to my professional bow, even though I’m well into my sixties.
4 .What pushed the author to pursue the challenge
A .An intention to get in shape. B .A need for mental freshness.
C .An interest in tourist guiding. D .A desire for widespread respect.
5 .What can be learned about the training course
A .It was too demanding to carry on.
B .It involved serving diverse people.
C .Passing exams was the hardest part.
D .Learning historical details is included.
6 .What does guiding visitors bring to the author
A .Chances to travel globally.
B .A cure for her memory loss.
C .A new-found love for the city.
D .Friends from all walks of life.

7 .What message does the author’s experience convey
A .Hard work pays off. B .To see is to believe.
C .Actions speak louder than words. D .Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Today, with the help of AI tools, anyone can instantly generate impressive architectural
images. Yet this raises a serious question: if technology lowers the technical barrier, what remains the true value of design The answer, many experts believe, lies in deeper philosophical thinking.
Architecture is not only about structure. It also reflects how humans understand life. This
understanding begins with the individual — how a building can shape people’s emotions, and then extends to the community — whether a neighborhood design brings people together or drives
them apart. Ultimately, it touches upon time itself — how to balance the preservation of historical identity with the need for change. In many cities, preserving every old structure, no matter its
function or relevance, has become something of a sacred cow, admired by all but discussed by few. Yet true architectural philosophy requires us to ask whether preserving everything always serves the community’s best interest.
AI can copy thousands of design styles, but it cannot make value judgments. It does not
know why, for instance, a library in Colombia places its reading room — not offices — in the
brightest and highest spaces: a design choice symbolizing equality. As scholar NayefAI —
Rodhan points out, “good design should possess valuable qualities, including fairness, inclusion, and safety, which cannot be outsourced to AI.”
In the future, the best architects may not be those who master AI tools, but those who master philosophical reflection. Saudi Arabia’s planned city “The Line” is one such example. Its design is not only technological but also philosophical — it asks whether humans can create a sustainable
city that allows people to live in harmony with nature. By turning a traditional city into a single vertical (垂直的) line, it challenges our deepest assumptions about urban life.
Freed from repetitive drafting work, architects in the age ofAI must think more deeply about humanity, community, and sustainability. The great designs ofthe future will emerge where
technology meets philosophy, not where one replaces the other.
8 .What does architecture truly involve
试卷第 6 页,共 13 页
A .The application of technology. B .The consideration of human life.
C .The pursuit of perfect structure. D .The focus on heritage protection.
9 .What does the underlined word “outsourced” in Paragraph 3 mean
A .Passed on. B .Given up. C .Taken back. D .Handed over.
10 .Why is “The Line” mentioned in Paragraph 4
A .To highlight deep thinking. B .To praise sustainable city designs.
C .To challenge existing designs. D .To argue against the use of AI tools.
11 .What is the best title for the text
A .The Future of Urban Architecture B .Breakthrough in Traditional Design
C .The Role of Technology in Architecture D .Reflection Beyond Architectural Design

Have you ever felt so stressed that you just froze Your body goes still, you can’t feel much
but meanwhile, your senses are working extra hard. You know you must act soon, but you just
can’t move. This “freezing”, or tonic immobility in academic terms, is an adaptive defense
response to stress or danger. When we freeze, our heart rate drops and our blood pressure changes. A flood of hormones (荷尔蒙) spread quickly, readying us for action. It can all happen within
seconds.
While fight-or-flight seems logical for survival, freezing makes us incapable of acting or
making a decision. But is that really all that’s going on Not according to Prof Karin Roelofs, a
neuroscientist who studies freezing at Radboud University. “Many people think that freezing is a kind of shutdown of the system,” she says. “What we actually find is that in threatening situations, freezing actually helps gain more information, prepare actions, and improve perception and
decision-making.” It’s a state of being watchful rather than total inactivity.
Importantly, this response can be trained. Roelofs highlights two groups controlling freezing: street performers keeping extreme stillness — the so-called living statues, and snipers (狙击手) requiring absolute stillness while making decisions. Lab research confirms this. A virtual reality shooting game showed players with stronger freezing responses performed better and decided
faster. Freezing actually helps reduce brain noise and thus leads to faster decisions.
But let’s say you’re not a sniper, or don’t spend your weekends as a living statue. What if

you’re about to take an exam or lead a big business meeting Those situations involving social pressure, may not be life or death, but still can cause freezing. The key is to use this response
through training, particularly slow and rhythmic (有节奏的) breathing. Instead of feeling out of control, you can master it and — sniper or not — take your best shot.
12 .What do we know about tonic immobility
A .It happens when we sleep. B .It raises our blood pressure.
C .It’s a natural bodily reaction. D .It results from heart failure.
13 .What does Karin Roelofs think of freezing
A .It helps us reduce pressure. B .It stops our senses working.
C .It is necessary for survival. D .It prepares our body for action.
14 .How does the author support his idea in Paragraph 4
A .By giving examples. B .By analyzing causes.
C .By making a contrast. D .By explaining a process.
15 .What is the purpose of writing the text
A .To help us apply trained breathing. B .To show the real function of freezing.
C .To introduce a new scientific finding. D .To clarify misunderstanding of freezing.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In daily interactions, the power of speech is often underestimated. 16 I propose there exist four fundamental principles that make our communication truly influential.
Remarkably, the first letters of these principles combine to form a meaningful word.
17 I refer not to small ice balls from the sky, but to its other meaning: to greet or praise with enthusiastic approval. This is how our words will be received if we consistently stick to the principles.
So what do they stand for Let’s break them down. The ‘H’ is honesty — being truthful,
direct, and clear. The ‘A’ represents authenticity — being genuine (真诚的) and not pretending to be someone else. 18 I think it is an accurate way to put it. The ‘I’ is for integrity, which means consistently following through on your promises. Finally, the ‘L’ signifies love, not

romance though, but rather a deep-seated goodwill for others. Yet remember, true power emerges only when these principles work in harmony. Absolute honesty can sometimes be unnecessarily mean. 19 In such situations, raw truth needs to be tempered with love to become
constructive rather than hurtful.
So hail. Now, imagine a world where we all communicate from this foundation —
grounded in honesty, authenticity, integrity, and love. Imagine people listening with conscious (有意识的) attention in suitable environments 20
A .It is “hail” , which has an idea worth spreading.
B .The word is “hail” , with a great definition as well.
C .It would surely be a world of beauty and understanding.
D .My friend once described it as standing in your own truth.
E .However, it is often challenging to get our meaning across.
F .Yet, it is our words that can inspire and bring about change.
G .Telling others “You look ugly today,” might be honest but unkind.

During my first week of high school, I noticed a boy named Kevin who seemed to always be alone. He ate lunch by himself at a corner table, never spoke in class, and walked home with
his head down, as if trying to be invisible. I didn’t know much about him, except that he was quiet and kept to himself.
One Friday afternoon, I was walking home when I heard noises coming from the park near school. I almost kept walking — it wasn’t any of my business — but something made me stop and look. Through the trees, I saw a group of older boys gathered in a circle. They were laughing
loudly, pushing someone back and forth between them. Then I saw who it was: Kevin.
My heart started racing. There were four of them, big guys from the senior class. Kevin’s books had been knocked to the ground, and every time he tried to pick them up, someone would kick them away. His glasses had fallen off and one of the boys stepped on them, crushing them into the dirt. Kevin’s face was pale with fear. He looked smaller than ever, trapped and helpless.
I stood there frozen for a moment. A voice in my head said, Keep walking. This isn’t your problem. But another voice, quieter but stronger, said, If not you, then who
I took a deep breath. My legs felt weak, but I made them move. I walked toward the group, trying to look calmer than I felt. As I got closer, one of the boys noticed me and nudged (用肘亲触) his friend. They all turned to stare.
“Hey,” I said, my voice coming out shakier than I wanted. “Leave him alone. ”
The biggest one stepped forward, a scorn (轻蔑) on his face. “Or what You gonna make us ”
I didn’t have an answer. I had no plan, no backup, no idea what to do next. But I didn’t step back. I just stood there, looking at them, hoping they couldn’t see how scared I was.

46 .Dear fellow students,
On Tree Planting Day, it filled us with pride to see so many of you volunteer in planting young trees in our school, aiming to enhance our environmental awareness and beautify our
campus.
However, we now regret to notice that many of these newly planted trees are suffering from a lack of necessary care. Some are leaning, others are drying out due to insufficient watering, and a few have even been damaged unintentionally by passers-by. Without timely intervention, our
initial efforts may go to waste. Therefore, we strongly recommend forming volunteer teams to ensure regular watering.
Join us in nurturing these green lives and take responsibility for a sustainable future!

For a long moment, no one moved. The biggest boy stared at me, waiting for me to back down. I forced myself to hold his gaze, even though my heart was pounding. Then one of the
others muttered, “Someone’s coming.” Footsteps approached behind me. The big boy shrugged. “Whatever. Not worth it.” He nodded to his friends, and they walked off. I turned to Kevin. He was still on the ground, head down, shoulders shaking. I knelt and helped him gather his books.
When we reached his house, Kevin stopped and turned to me. “No one has ever done that for me,” he said quietly. “Thank you.” His simple words hit me harder than I expected. I had almost
walked past the park that day. I had almost let fear win. As I headed home, I couldn’t stop
thinking about all the other “Kevins” in our school—the ones I had never noticed, never greeted,
never seen. That night, I made a quiet promise: from now on, I would be someone who sees.
