In this short talk today, I’ll be giving you more general information which will be relevant to you all. When you start next Monday, the first thing you’ll need to do is sign in. Come through the main entrance and you’ll see the statue of the horse, and just behind that is a door. Go through that, and that’s the sign-in office. Now, on the first day, you’ll be working in Gallery One. You find this as follows: In the central courtyard area, close to the entrance, there’s a large box where visitors put donations for the museum. The door just behind that leads to Gallery One. The workshop you’ll be taking part in starts at 11 o’clock. I haven’t mentioned breaks, lunch, etc. Unfortunately, our cafe is closed at the moment, so your best bet is to bring a packed lunch. We tend to have our sandwiches in the kitchen area. Go round the reception desk, and you’ll see the door to the kitchen area is just behind that. Now, does anyone have any questions

I was just 26, newly married and pregnant, when I moved into the small house that shared a driveway with a neighbor. While unpacking, I heard a knock and found a man standing at my back door, ruddy-faced and beaming. Handing me a bushel of apples he’d picked, he said, “I am Walter. Welcome good neighbors,” and left.
Those apples were just what I needed for my persistent morning sickness, but I’d no idea at the time that this neighbour would be an antidote for life’s struggles. We lived peacefully side by side for 35 years, coming to know each other through our day-to-day ebb and flow — chatting, lending a helping hand, keeping a watchful eye, never overstepping. It was a special bond — he was always there, steady as rain.
Most of our life unfolded in Walter’s backyard. From dawn to dusk, he practiced sustainable living — drying fruit, making sausage, and tending his garden. Fishing was his year-round passion; my children loved helping clean his catch. Without kids of his own, he cherished their company, and his catches often led to joyful family gatherings under the mulberry tree. After my divorce, Walter quietly became my support: fixing my car, teaching me skills, and even chipping ice off my roof. When my mother was dying, he promised to look out for me — and through my hardest years, he was always a door-knock away.
With time going by, Walter burrowed deep into my heart. Like my mum, Walter could mend nearly anything with his hands — a torn book, a loose button, a quiet sorrow. His laughter was a force that seemed to push back against the darkness he had known. He was the closest thing I had to a father, though mine was alive at the time. We loved each other a lot.
He has been gone for two years now, but every time I eat an apple, I still think of him. So lucky am I to have had him so long, just across the way.
24. How did the author develop a bond with her neighbor Walter
A. Through small caring actions. B. By giving free gifts to each other.
C. Through years of peaceful coexistence. D. By sharing the same passion for fishing.
25. The phrase “steady as rain” in the second paragraph is used to describe Walter’s _________.
A. preference for rainy days B. constant and reliable presence
C. tendency to overstep others’ life D. unpredictable and unstable mood
26. According to the passage, which idiom best reflects Walter’s role in the author’s life
A. A hard nut to crack. B. A drop in the ocean.
C. A storm in a teacup. D. A shoulder to cry on.
27. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the text
A. To describe Walter’s green lifestyle and hobbies.
B. To recall her dear neighbor and express her gratitude.
C. To show how to build a close neighbourly relationship.
D. To share how she pulled through ups and downs in her life.
A 25. B 26. D 27. B

根据第二段“We lived peacefully side by side for 35 years, coming to know each other through our day-to-day ebb and flow — chatting, lending a helping hand, keeping a watchful eye, never overstepping. It was a special bond — he was always there, steady as rain.(我们相安无事地共同生活了35年,通过日常生活的起起落落逐渐了解彼此——相互交谈、伸出援手、密切留意、从不逾矩。这是一种特殊的感情纽带——他一直都在,如雨般稳定可靠)”可知,always there说明他一直都在、稳定可靠。第二段中的“如雨般稳定”这一表述用来形容沃尔特始终如一、始终可靠的出现状态。故选B。
26. 细节理解题。根据第三段“After my divorce, Walter quietly became my support: fixing my car, teaching me skills, and even chipping ice off my roof. One day I typed into ChatGPT all about my upset feelings and it instantly responded, offering a list of practical advice. Nowadays millions of people are already turning to Chat-GPT and specialist therapy(治疗) chatbots for convenient and inexpensive mental health support.
Some experts say this is a boon. After all, AI, undisturbed by embarrassment and burnout, might be able to express empathy(同理心) more openly and tirelessly than humans. But others worry about the consequences of people seeking emotional support from machines that can only pretend to care. Some even wonder if the rise of so-called empathetic AI might change the way we interact with one another. Indeed, empathy is one of our species’ defining qualities, developing as it did in pace with social interaction.
One recent analysis about empathy looked at 52 studies published between 1980and 2019, which shows that the empathiser must first be able to recognize how the other person is feeling. They must also be affected by those emotions and differentiate between themselves and the other person, grasping that the other person’s feelings aren’t their own while still being able to imagine their experience.
On the first point, in recent years, AI-powered chatbots have made progress in their ability to read human emotions, most powered by large language models (LLMs) that work by predicting which words are most likely to appear together based on training data. In this way, LLMs like ChatGPT can seemingly identify our feelings and respond appropriately most of the time. But when it comes to the other criteria, AI still misses the mark in many ways. Empathy is interpersonal, with continued feedback helping to perfect the empathiser’s response, which also requires some degree of intuitive (直觉的) awareness of an individual and their situation.
All of this helps to explain conversations like the ones I had with ChatGPT. At the end of the day, despite talking to multiple chat-bots online, I did what I knew I had to do all along: I picked up my phone and called a friend.
28. What does the underlined word “boon” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Trap. B. Prize. C. Blessing. D. Challenge.
29. What does the recent analysis show about empathy
A. It calls for clear communication. B. It starts with emotion identification.
C. It rules out individual difference. D. It depends on rich imagination.
30. What can AI do according to Paragraph 4
A. Provide data-driven feedback. B. Recognize one’s real desire.
C. Update large language models. D. Predict one’s behavior by intuition.
31. What does the author think of ChatGPT
A. Its development should be sped up. B. Its intelligence is winning more favor.
C. Its application should be strictly managed. D. Its artificial kindness is no match for humans’.
C 29. B 30. A 31. D
根据第二段的“Some experts say this is a boon. After all, AI, undisturbed by embarrassment and burnout, might be able to express empathy(同理心) more openly and tirelessly than humans.
根据第三段的“One recent analysis about empathy looked at 52 studies published between 1980and 2019, which shows that the empathiser must first be able to recognize how the other person is feeling. (最近有一项关于同理心的分析,研究了1980年至2019年间发表的52项研究,结果表明,产生同理心的人首先必须能够识别出对方的感受。)”可知,关于同理心的最近分析表明,同理心的首要条件是能够识别另一个人的感受。故选B。
30. 推理判断题。根据第四段的“On the first point, in recent years, AI-powered chatbots have made progress in their ability to read human emotions, most powered by large language models (LLMs) that work by predicting which words are most likely to appear together based on training data. In this way, LLMs like ChatGPT can seemingly identify our feelings and respond appropriately most of the time. 故选A。
根据第四段的“But when it comes to the other criteria, AI still misses the mark in many ways. Empathy is interpersonal, with continued feedback helping to perfect the empathiser’s response, which also requires some degree of intuitive (直觉的) awareness of an individual and their situation. (但在其他标准方面,人工智能在很多方面仍未达标。同理心是一种人际关系的体现,持续的反馈有助于完善产生同理心者的回应,这也需要对一个人及其处境有一定程度的直觉意识。)”以及最后一段的“At the end of the day, despite talking to multiple chat-bots online, I did what I knew I had to do all along: I picked up my phone and called a friend. (最终,尽管我在网上与多个聊天机器人进行了交流,但我还是做了我一直知道自己必须做的事:我拿起电话,给一个朋友打了电话。)”可知,虽然ChatGPT能提供一定的帮助,但在作者看来,它的人工善意仍然不能与真实的人类情感交流相比。由此可推知,作者认为它的人工善意无法与人类的相比。故选D。
D
“Ghost gear” refers to lost or abandoned fishing nets, a highly destructive pollutant in oceans. Each year, approximately 1 million tons of such gear are discarded at sea, accounting for up to 86% of large marine floating plastics. Unlike visible plastic waste like bottles, it sinks into the deep ocean, continuously trapping sea animals, producing microplastics and endangering navigation.
To address this issue, organizations like Conservation International have launched programs worldwide. A distinctive project in Mexico focuses on training female divers known as sirenas to clear away ghost gear and help coastal communities gain a direct understanding of the pollution’s harm.
These female divers rely on commercial fishing as their primary income source but volunteer for the cleanup. After professional training and certification, they start searching for and removing dangerous ghost gear. The operation tests their physical limits and patience to the fullest. As many as 117 sailors once invested over 40 hours in clearing a massive 300-foot-long fishing net. Their diving experience has completely transformed their perception of the ocean. By engaging with communities and fishing cooperatives, they have gradually gained recognition, carving out a space for women in marine conservation within the male-dominated fishing industry.
Undoubtedly, prevention deserves the equal priority to cleanup. The Global Ghost Gear Initiative has developed a reporting system for fishers to notify lost gear for timely recovery and provided them with region-specific recommendations, such as avoiding operations in severe weather and storing gear properly.
In selected regions, fishing nets bear unique identifiers, enabling the precise tracking of their ownership by individuals or commercial fisheries post-recovery and instantly locking down whoever is at fault. “Once your fishing gear is attached to distinct identifiers, it facilitates a heightened sense of individual accountability, which in turn generates a concrete effect on your behavioral approach to fishing practices,” notes Jimenez, a marine biologist.
The governance of ghost gear demands cooperation among fishers, researchers and policymakers. By changing mindsets and taking effective measures, this campaign against ocean “ghosts” is advancing steadily, injecting hope for the sustainable future of marine ecosystems and coastal communities.
32. How does ghost gear differ from other marine plastics
A. It’s harder to detect. B. It’s distributed more extensively.
C. It takes longer to break down. D. It floats evenly in shallower water.
33. Why does the author mention the 300-foot-long net removal example
A. To showcase training effect. B. To emphasize potential net risks.
C. To highlight work efficiency. D. To demonstrate cleanup challenges.
34. What can we infer from Jimenez’s words
A. Labels avoid fishing net loss. B. Technology reshapes productivity.
C. Markings boost responsibility. D. Identity validation guarantees security.
35. What can be the best title of the text
A. Deep-sea Ghost Gear: Silent Killers.
B. Sirenas: Dedicated Ocean Guardians.
C. Multi-dimensional Actions: Tackling Marine Ghosts.
D. For Marine Conservation: Mind Your Fishing Gear.
A 33. D 34. C 35. C
根据第一段“Unlike visible plastic waste like bottles, it sinks into the deep ocean, continuously trapping sea animals, producing microplastics and endangering navigation. (与瓶子等可见的塑料垃圾不同,它会沉入深海,不断困住海洋动物,产生微塑料,危及航行)”可知,幽灵渔具和其他海洋塑料不同,它沉入深海、更难被检测到。故选A项。
根据第三段“The operation tests their physical limits and patience to the fullest. As many as 117 sailors once invested over 40 hours in clearing a massive 300-foot-long fishing net. (这项行动最大限度地考验了她们的体力和耐心。多达117名水手曾投入超过40小时清理一条长达300英尺的巨大渔网)”可知,作者提到清理300英尺长的渔网是为了展示清理工作的挑战性。故选D项。
34. 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Once your fishing gear is attached to distinct identifiers, it facilitates a heightened sense of individual accountability, which in turn generates a concrete effect on your behavioral approach to fishing practices, (一旦你的渔具贴上了独特的标识,就会增强个人的责任感,进而对你的捕鱼行为产生具体的影响)”可知,从Jimenez的话中我们可以推断出标记能增强责任感。故选C项。
根据第一段““Ghost gear” refers to lost or abandoned fishing nets, a highly destructive pollutant in oceans.(“幽灵渔具”是指丢失或遗弃的渔网,这是海洋中一种极具破坏性的污染物)”、最后一段“The governance of ghost gear demands cooperation among fishers, researchers and policymakers.(幽灵渔具的治理需要渔民、研究人员和政策制定者之间的合作)”以及文章内容可知,本文既介绍幽灵渔具的危害,又介绍多国组织、人员从清理、预防、监管多方面采取措施,所以“多维行动:对抗海洋幽灵”适合作为文章标题。故选C项。

On the Spot: When the Spotlight Breaks Trust
Most of us have been put on the spot in a number of different situations, whether at work or among a group of friends. 36 However, you just aren’t ready to give, whether it’s because you don’t know or you’re not willing to share. It is really embarrassing.
We are no stranger to putting others on the spot ourselves, usually by accident. Perhaps we ask a sensitive question of a friend in a group setting, or try to push a quiet coworker to share their answers in a meeting. 37
Putting someone on the spot though, whether intentional or not, has the effect of destroying trust in a relationship. The key to maintaining the trust in a relationship is developing your emotional intelligence. 38 As Krauss wrote in a recent Psychology Today article, “A sign that you’re not as sensitive as you could be when you pressure people is that others try to stay away from you to the extent that they can.”
39 Are people born with the ability to develop a high level of emotional intelligence, or is that something they are taught Although the answer is probably a little bit of both, strengthening our emotional intelligence is definitely something we can all do. 40 Many of us have developed them with time to strengthen our emotional intelligence, whether with the help of a professional or through our own trial-and-error.
A. People are fed up with the dull and long meetings.
B. It can help us understand and handle a confusing situation.
C. A core part of that is being able to perceive how others feel.
D. Sets of eyes turn toward you with the expectations for an answer.
E. There is a debate on whether emotional intelligence is native or not.
F. Listening, empathizing, and reflecting are strategies often acquired later in life.
G. We may even unknowingly touch a nerve with a family member at a casual gathering.
D 37. G 38. C 39. E 40. F
36. 前文“Most of us have been put on the spot in a number of different situations, whether at work or among a group of friends.(我们大多数人都曾在各种不同的情境中面临过被当众质问,无论是工作场合还是与朋友相处时)”说明我们大多数人在工作或朋友群体中都会处于被当众质问的尴尬境地。D选项“Sets of eyes turn toward you with the expectations for an answer.(一双双眼睛转向你,期待着你的回答)”进一步描述了这种被当众质问时的场景,承接上文,符合语境,故选D。
37. 前文“We are no stranger to putting others on the spot ourselves, usually by accident. Perhaps we ask a sensitive question of a friend in a group setting, or try to push a quiet coworker to share their answers in a meeting.(我们并不罕见地会自己把别人置于尴尬的境地,这种情况往往是因为疏忽所致。
38. 前文“The key to maintaining the trust in a relationship is developing your emotional intelligence.(维持一段关系中信任的关键在于提升自己的情商)”说明维持关系中信任的关键是培养情商,C选项“A core part of that is being able to perceive how others feel.(其中关键的一点在于能够理解他人的情绪)”进一步解释了培养情商的核心内容,符合语境。故选C。
39. 后文“Are people born with the ability to develop a high level of emotional intelligence, or is that something they are taught (人们是天生就具备高情商的能力,还是后天通过学习获得的呢?)”
40. 后文“Many of us have developed them with time to strengthen our emotional intelligence, whether with the help of a professional or through our own trial-and-error.(我们中的许多人都是通过时间的积累来增强自己的情商的,无论是借助专业人士的帮助,还是通过自己不断尝试和摸索)”说明我们很多人都通过时间的积累来增强自己的情商,F选项“Listening, empathizing, and reflecting are strategies often acquired later in life.(倾听、共情和反思是人们在后天逐渐习得的策略)”与后文内容相呼应,说明这些增强情商的能力是后来获得的,故选F。

Li Bai, honored as “the Immortal Poet” in Chinese literary history, lived a life as dramatic and passionate as his verses. Besides his poetic genius, Li Bai was famous 56 his uninhibited soul—a spirit that resisted imperial restrictions, drank with the moon, and turned every mountain, river, and cup of wine into a testament to life’s boundless passion. His travels, which took him from Sichuan’s misty mountains to Chang’an’s grand palaces, 57 (shape) his unique style—bold, imaginative, and free from rigid literary rules.
In his early 58 (thirty), Li Bai was invited to the imperial court as a Hanlin Scholar, 59 role that let him compose poems for Emperor Xuanzong. He once asked eunuch Gao Lishi to remove his boots, showing contempt for authority, and later left Chang’an voluntarily, 61 (choose) a wandering, wine-filled life.
Li Bai’s poems blended emotions with landscapes. His masterpiece Hard Roads in Shu described Sichuan’s 62 (terrifying) steep mountains so vividly that readers felt the danger of “one misstep may bring eternal regret.” The vivid and emotional lines are expressions of Li Bai’s feelings, and with the scenes changing 63 (come) the shift of his emotions.
56. for 57. shaped 58. thirties 59. a 60. refusal
61. choosing 62. terrifyingly es 64. Pardoned 65. how
“be famous for”是固定短语,意为“因……

Physical or online bookstores, which do you prefer
I’m more of a fan of online bookstores. First, they offer a much wider range of books, including rare editions that are hard to find in physical stores. Second, the prices are usually lower, with frequent discounts and promotions, which helps save money. What’s more, home delivery makes it super convenient — I don’t need to spend time traveling to a store.
In a word, though physical stores have their charm, online bookstores better fit my fast-paced student life.

My philosophy on stray animals was simple: not my problem. They were part of the city’s background noise, like traffic or distant alarms. My parents had always said, “You can’t save them all,” and I had taken that as permission to save none.
Everything changed on a cold, rainy Tuesday evening. I was hurrying home, head down against the drizzle, when a faint, desperate sound stopped me. It wasn’t a bark, but a sob — the kind that seemed to curl right into your chest. Huddled under a damp cardboard box in a dank(阴冷潮湿的) alley was a small, trembling dog. Its fur was matted with mud, and one of its back legs was held at an unnatural angle. Our eyes met, and in its gaze was a raw, silent look that broke through all my practiced indifference.
A war erupted inside me. The old voice said, “Keep walking. Someone else will deal with it. You have homework.” But my feet were rooted to the wet pavement. That small, suffering creature was no longer a faceless part of the urban landscape; it was an individual, right here, right now, in pain because of human neglect and indifference — the very indifference I was about to show.
I took off my rain-spattered school jacket. Kneeling in the damp grime, I spoke in a voice I didn’t recognize as my own, soft and reassuring. “It’s okay,” I whispered, as much to myself as to the dog. “I’ve got you.” With immense care, I wrapped the jacket around its shivering body, avoiding the injured leg. It shook but didn’t resist, a fragile trust that felt like a monumental weight in my arms. Holding the dog, I stood up, my own discomfort forgotten. The walk to the nearest animal shelter, twenty blocks away, was the beginning of a journey I never saw coming. In the drizzle, I pushed forward until the shelter’s warm light came into view.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Paragraph 1 :
The shelter staff greeted us warmly.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2 :
A week later, I returned to the shelter.

The shelter staff greeted us warmly. They gently took the trembling dog from my arms, laying it on an examination table. After cleaning its matted fur with warm water and checking the injury, they wrapped the leg in a padded bandage. It stopped shivering, eyes softening as a nurse stroked its head. Noticing my concerned look, they promised daily updates on its recovery. When I took my school jacket and headed back home, I found the drizzle soft, and even the city’s noise pleasant.
A week later, I returned to the shelter. The dog bounded toward me, its leg fully healed, tail wagging wildly. The staff laughed, saying it had been waiting by the door every afternoon. As I knelt to pet it, I thought of my parents’ words : “You can’t save them all.” But holding its warm paw, I smiled and realized compassion wasn’t about saving everyone, but about caring for the one in front of you. That rainy evening didn’t make me a hero, but it taught me that even small acts of kindness could rewrite a life — including my own.
