It was in 1979 and 8-year-old Wendy McDowell needed to fly from Bismarck to Burlington. No one in her family could go with her, so her parents decided it would be safe for a 19-year-old family friend to accompany her. When they arrived for their layover in Chicago O’Hare Airport, their connecting flight was cancelled. The family friend bought herself a ticket back home and left the girl all alone in one of the busiest international airports in the country.
“You know that feeling of being a kid and looking around and every single face is a stranger’s face.” She remembers.
She felt desperate until a woman in white walked over to her. “She came and sat next to me,” she recalls. “And I immediately felt a sense of safety because someone was with me.”
The woman could tell something was not right and she got permission from McDowell to take over. After reassuring McDowell, the woman convinced her to share her mother’s phone number. And on the phone, she convinced her mother that McDowell would be safe with her. Although, she was flying to Pittsburgh, she made a detour (绕道) to Burlington to drop off McDowell.
“The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve been thinking about her,” McDowell said. “Just knowing that she did all of that for a stranger. Something that maybe didn’t feel huge to her just completely redirected my life because I don’t think I have ever been treated as badly as I was by the person who left me.”
She has used that experience to teach her son about kindness. “I want him to know that people can choose to be beautiful and helpful and provide security and that people like this are out there,” she said. “So I just appreciate it more than words can really express.”
( )24. Why was the girl left alone at the airport
A. Because she was cheated by a stranger.

D. She relieves herself of the unpleasant experience.
( )27. What message does the author mainly convey in the passage
A. Honesty is the best policy in life.

C. A small kindness makes a big difference.
D. True happiness comes from helping others.
C
“To me, love is the most important thing. What could be more healing than love ”
These words, like lines from a poem, are easy to agree with coming from Robin, who founded the Bumi Sehat Bali Clinic in central Ubud, the setting for the film Eat Pray Love. Now the clinic provides treatment or educational support for over 100,000 people annually.
Giving birth to her first child at nineteen, Robin moved to Hawaii after college, working for several years on a farm, where she taught farming practices and poetry. But in 1991, she received heartbreaking news. Her idyllic life on the farm in Hawaii was turned upside down when her sister, expecting a child in Alabama, died of pregnancy complications (妊娠并发症).
“When my dear sister passed away, I realised mothers were dying everywhere. In countries with increased poverty, some people can’t afford to go to the hospital. What motivated me initially was my love for my sister, but this soon grew into a concern for mothers and children all over the world.” Robin’s feelings for her sister were transformed into a desire to help women everywhere in need.
To ensure that children are born healthy, nutritionally balanced meals are provided for expecting mothers free of charge. Those who lack housing are free to stay as long as it is necessary. The clinic also sees patients of all ages who have symptoms unrelated to childbirth, while providing facilities for language learning and IT education, and annually training over 6,000 nursing and midwifery (助产) students, supported by a scholarship programme.
Just as Robin said, love is to be found inside the Bumi Sehat Bali Clinic. Perhaps feelings of showing kindness toward others and wanting to make the world a better place are the key to a brighter tomorrow.
( )28. Which of the following best explains the underlined word “idyllic” in Paragraph 3

A. It is famous for its nursing programme.
B. It offers mothers-to-be free diets.
C. It provides financial aid for mothers.
D. It has treated more than 6,000 patients.
( )31. What can we learn from Robin’s story
A. Love makes the world a better place.
B. Ups and downs make one strong.
C. Kindness can be richly rewarded.
D. Hard work inspires great respect.
D
The parents’ interpersonal strength, such as kindness, love, and social intelligence, is one of the salient points in nurturing their children. As social psychologist John Bowlby puts it, “We do as we have been done by.”
Take my grandmother as an example. When other children came over to play with my mother, my grandmother would fix them delicious butter sandwiches—the crusts (面包皮) delicately removed from the bread for “the guests” but unavoidably left on for her own children. This is how we ought to treat guests in our home—guests are worthy of kindness, but you are not. The kindness that my grandmother modeled and instructed her children to emulate (效仿) was not ultimately what they experienced—kindness was seen but not felt.
Generally, we often treat others the way we ourselves were treated. So much of what we learn as children and adults is experience-dependent. First-hand experience, especially when repeated over time, literally shapes the brain and nervous system, with downstream consequences for the way we engage with the world around us, deal with emotions, and behave socially.
We don’t learn to love by being instructed to love; we learn to love by experiencing love. We don’t learn kindness by being told to be kind; we learn kindness by experiencing kindness in our darkest moments. Recent research shows that children who received help while playing a game were more likely to share with another child, possibly motivated by feelings of gratitude to the person who helped them. They could learn that they don’t just repay the kindness but they need to pay it forward.
This transforms one of the key questions about raising kids: Perhaps we should ask not how to teach our children kindness, but how we want our children to experience kindness from us. If we want to create a kinder society, we might start with policies that ensure kinder treatment of kids. This means reimagining our education and foster care systems around compassion and support. Science tells us that experiences of kindness in childhood have long-term, biological and intergenerational effects on children’s development; our parenting and political systems should reflect the science.
( )32. What does the underlined word “salient” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Practical. B. Important.
C. Interesting. D. Controversial.

A. Action speaks louder than words.
B. Kindness makes better cooperation.
C. It is important to repay others’ kindness.
D. Gratitude is a motivation for helping others.
( )35. What is the author trying to do in the last paragraph
A. To give suggestions on parenting.
B. To call on people to learn science.
C. To show the advantages of being kind.
D. To offer evidence supporting his point of view.

Ethics (道德规范) are concerned with people’s moral actions. One type of ethics is school ethics. 36 They include students, teachers and administrators. Ethics designed for each of these groups are usually created within the institution, through professional organisations, or by both.
School ethics provide ethical standards that people are expected to follow in relation to working with others and in the decision-making process. Ethics also bring consequences to those who don’t follow school ethics. These moral rules are significant. 37 Moreover, they encourage people to support each other and support the school with some special requirements designed for them.
38 Particularly, students must respect their peers, teachers and admini-strators. Additionally, school ethics require students to respect their institutions which they’re admitted into. One of the most significant factors concerning students and ethics in schools is plagiarism (剽窃)—students are required to hand in work that is uniquely their own and be prepared to suffer consequences if it is not.
Teachers and administrators are ethically guided through professional and institutional ethical codes. They are typically required to create a learning environment that promotes high ethical standards for students through modeling and instruction. Moreover, teachers and administrators should create a safe and fair learning environment. 39
Educators are also required to show high ethical standards in their communication with parents, peers, students, etc. Building trust is an essential part of these interactions. Teachers and administrators are ethically expected to maintain their professional training and to present themselves as representatives of the school in an ethical manner. 40 But most of the educators are supportive of these ethics.
A. Besides, the rules can be interesting.
B. Why should students follow the ethics
C. What are school ethics’ requirements for students
D. To strictly follow all the ethics can be challenging.
E. They help create an atmosphere of trust, honesty, etc.
F. Generally, such ethics apply to all people in a school.
G. Thus, all students can have equal educational chances to achieve success.

“Wanted: Violin. Can’t pay much. Contact…”
I rarely read the classified advertisements, so why did I notice that one I laid the paper on my lap and closed my eyes, remembering what had happened many years ago during the Great Depression when my family struggled to make a living on our farm. I, too, had wanted a violin.
When my elder twin sisters began showing an interest in music,Harriet Anne learnt to play Grandma’s piano, while Suzanne turned to Daddy’s violin. Simple tunes became lovely melodies. My baby brother danced; Daddy hummed and Mother whistled. I just listened.
When my arms grew long enough, I tried to play Suzanne’s violin. Oh, how I wanted one! But I knew it was out of the question.
One evening, as the twins played in the school orchestra, I closed my eyes tight to fix the picture firmly in my mind. Some day, I would sit up there, I vowed silently.
It was not a good year. At harvest, the crops didn’t bring as much as we had hoped. Yet even though times were hard, I couldn’t wait any longer to ask, “Daddy, may I have a violin of my own ”
“Can’t you use Suzanne’s ”
“I’d like to be in the orchestra too, and we can’t both use the same violin at the same time.”
Daddy’s face looked sad. That night, and many following nights, I heard him praying sincerely.
One evening we all sat around the table. The twins and I studied. Mother sewed and Daddy wrote a letter to his friend,George Finkle, in Columbus, Ohio. Mr Finkle, Daddy said, was a fine violinist.
When Daddy received a letter from Columbus a few weeks later, he asked me,“Mary Lou, do you want to go with me to visit Mr Finkle ”
He drove us to Columbus and we came to a fine, old house. A tall man opened the door.He and Daddy heartily shook hands, both talking at once.
“Mary Lou, I’ve been hearing things about you. Your Daddy has arranged a surprise for you!” He picked up a case, opened it, lifted out a violin and started to play. The melody surged and flowed like waterfalls. Oh, to play like him, I thought.
Finishing the piece, he turned to Daddy,“I found it in a pawnshop (当铺) for seven dollars. It’s a good violin. Mary Lou should be able to make beautiful music with it.” Then he handed the violin to me.

W: Hi it’s me. Listen, just a quick call. I’m packing for the weekend, and I just want to check what we want to take with us.
M: Oh, I don’t know. The usual things, toothbrushes…
W: Well, but any special clothes
M: Shorts and T-shirts, because it’ll probably be quite hot when we are walking round sightseeing, and comfortable shoes. You can pack my brown shoes, because they’re my best ones for walking around all day.
W: Yes. And we’d better pack something smart if we’re going to the theater on Saturday night.
M: Yes. Put in my blue suit and that new shirt. They’re OK for the play. And put in raincoats just in case it rains.
W: OK. And what about other things apart from clothes
M: I can’t think of anything else. Listen, I’ll phone you back if I do. I’ve got a meeting now. You can get to the airport first. I’ll see you at the check-in desk at five. OK
W: Yes, see you then. Don’t be late!
Text 9
W: Saw you on the seven o’clock news last night.
M: Oh, yeah.
W: So tell us what happened
M: I was wandering on the beach when I heard someone calling out for help. I looked up, and there on the headland was a little kid. He’d climbed way up on the huge rock and was stuck.
W: What did you do
M: My first thought was to run and get help, but the boy was crying, and he looked as though he’d fall at any moment. So I climbed up to get him down. The rocks were very loose, and I almost slipped a couple of times. I was beginning to think it wasn’t such a good idea to climb up there without getting help. Then I reached the boy OK, but then I couldn’t get him down. So we were both stuck.
W: So what did you do
M: I yelled for help. Pretty soon there was a small crowd on the beach. One of them called the Coast Rescue Service. After about five minutes there was a helicopter overhead, and we were rescued.

B. It offers mothers-to-be free diets.

( B )32. What does the underlined word “salient” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Practical. B. Important.
C. Interesting. D. Controversial.
( C )33. What does the author think of his grandmother’s way of teaching her kids kindness
A. Understandable.
B. Instructive.

( D )34. What can be inferred from the recent research
A. Action speaks louder than words.
B. Kindness makes better cooperation.
C. It is important to repay others’ kindness.
D. Gratitude is a motivation for helping others.

36. F 37. E 38. C 39. G 40. D

A Heartwarming Story
Recently, I came across a beautiful display of sympathy that I felt worthwhile to share. While waiting at a crowded bus stop, I noticed an elderly woman struggling to carry her groceries. Despite the rush hour, a young man stepped forward, offering his assistance without hesitation.
Witnessing his selfless act reminded me of the marked impact of kindness in our daily lives. It taught me that sympathy knows no boundaries of age or circumstance. In our fast-paced world, such gestures serve as gentle reminders of our shared humanity, inspiring us to extend a helping hand whenever possible.
第二节 读后续写(满分 25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
I noticed the tears in Daddy’s eyes as I finally comprehended. It was mine!“It’s beautiful,” I said, barely breathing. I knew Daddy’s prayer, and mine, had been answered.Back home, I practised daily, feeling no tiredness. When I was ready to join the school orchestra, I trembled with excitement.Daddy and Mother smiled proudly in the audience at their little girl who held her cherished violin for the whole world to admire. The years seemed to run more swiftly then. I packed my violin in its case and stepped into the grown-up world. Nurse’s training, marriage, working and bringing up four daughters filled my years. Yet none of my children cared about the violin.
Paragraph 2:
I forced my thoughts to the present and read the advertisement again.Laying the paper aside, I went to find my violin. And I dialed the number. Later that afternoon, an old car stopped in my driveway. A man in his thirties with a young girl knocked on the door. “I’ve been praying someone would answer my advertisement. My daughter wants a violin, so badly,” he said. “How much are you asking ” “Seven dollars,” I said. I handed the case to the girl. She opened the case and touched the violin lightly as it caught the glow of the late-afternoon sun. Then she threw her arms round her smiling father.
