Three Most Culturally Significant
Miao Festivals
Miao New Year
It is celebrated at different times of the year in different regions, usually in the period from the ninth to the eleventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar and lasting 5 to 15 days. During the festival, Miao people dress up in traditional costumes and there are large parades. The locals celebrate by beating drums (鼓), dancing to the music of lusheng, horse racing and sometimes horse fighting or bullfighting.
The Lusheng Festival
The largest Lusheng Festival is held in Kaili, Guizhou. It is celebrated from the 16th to the 20th of the first lunar month. During the festival, Miao people from surrounding villages all come together in traditional dress. The men play lusheng while the women dance. They believe that this ceremony will bring a good harvest and good health in the coming year. However, the festival is not simply about playing lusheng. It also features other activities typical of Miao people, such as singing, bullfighting, and horse racing.
The Sisters’ Meal Festival
Held from the 15th to the 17th of the third lunar month, it is the most popular festival among young men and women of Miao people. Before the festival, Miao girls go to the mountains to gather wild flowers and leaves, which are then used to make coloured dye (染料). When the festival begins, Miao girls meet by the river banks to make “Sister’s Rice”. They dye the rice blue, pink, yellow and white to represent spring, summer, autumn and winter.
When the men arrive, each of them singles out the woman he loves and sings to her. The woman responds to the song by giving the man a cup of rice wine and the Sister’s Rice. If the rice is offered with a pair of red chopsticks, it means the woman returns the man’s love. If only one chopstick is offered, it is a polite refusal.
( )21. What can be learnt about Miao New Year

B. The date for celebration varies with the region.
C. Its celebrations range from concerts to parades.
D. It takes at least 15 days to prepare and celebrate.

( )23. Why is the Sister’s Meal Festival popular with young people

B. It allows them to dye rice for fun.
C. It features many sports activities like wrestling.
D. It is an opportunity to show their singing talents.

Georgia, who works for a popular fashion store in the UK, left her purse at a gas station after her company party in early December. She was heartbroken, but thinking someone must have taken it away, she gave up the idea of going back to look for it and didn’t phone the station to ask about it. But her tears quickly dried when an off-duty firefighter named Nyma showed up at her door.
A ring camera caught Georgia and Nyma’s exchange, and the owner of the store posted the video on the store’s website. In it, Nyma rings her doorbell and Georgia answers it using a phone app. Nyma explained where he found the lost purse and said he decided to drive straight to her house, so she wouldn’t have to experience an extra moment of panic.
Georgia was moved to tears and kept offering to send Nyma money for his good deed, but he refused. He simply asked her to pay it forward, and explained that it was no trouble for him though Georgia knew he needed to drive hours to get to her house. Because she wasn’t home at the time, he left the purse in an empty garbage bag and left.
The owner and Georgia were so touched by the gesture, and they started a search for the mystery man so they could give him a proper “thank you”. Georgia uploaded the video. It didn’t take long to find him. They invited him to the store for an official meet—and he went.
“He is such a kind man,” reads another post. “It was an absolute pleasure to meet him. The video has got millions of views and we hope he will be a positive influence on many.”
( )24. How did Georgia respond when realising she lost her purse

C. A Moving Journey Recorded on Social Media
D. A Firefighter Drives Hours to Return a Purse

Culture shock occurs when people have been suddenly thrown into a new culture. Newcomers may be anxious because they don’t speak the language. Neither do they know the customs nor understand the people’s behaviour in daily life.
Quite often the visitors find that “yes” may not always mean “yes”, that friendliness does not necessarily mean friendship, or that statements that appear to be serious are really intended about jokes. The foreigners may be unsure about when to shake hands, when to start conversations, or how to approach a stranger. The concept of culture shock helps explain the feeling of puzzlement and confusion.
Language problems do not lead to all the setbacks that people feel. When one has lost everything that was once familiar, such as understanding a transportation system, knowing how to register for university classes, or knowing how to make friends, difficulties in coping with the new society may arise.
When an individual enters a strange culture, he or she feels like a fish out of water. Newcomers feel at times that they do not belong to the culture and feel deserted by the native members of the culture. When this happens, visitors may want to refuse everything about the new environment and may glorify and sing their own praises of the positive aspects of their own culture. On the other side, more visitors may look down on their native country by rejecting its value and instead choosing to approve of the value of the new country. This may occur as an attempt to accept the new culture in order to be taken in by the people in it.
( )28. How do people feel when they are suddenly in a new culture
A. Excited. B. Delighted.
C. Upset. D. Hopeless.
( )29. We can infer from Paragraph 2 that .
A. it’s impossible to get used to a new culture

A. people away from their culture can hardly survive in a new culture
B. a fish can not survive without water
C. people away from their culture experience mental loneliness
D. people away from their culture have many difficulties in the new environment
( )31. The biggest barrier people often meet with in a new country is .
A. the language
B. the transportation

Spend any time in London, England’s capital, and you’ll quickly realise that it’s a multicultural community. Look around at your fellow passengers on the underground or the bus. They’re of every skin colour and dress differently from one another. Listen, and you’ll hear many other languages besides English spoken. Some of these people will be tourists who are in London to see the sights. But others, in fact probably most, will be living their lives there, along with millions of others.
Along with white British people, there are Britons from, or with parents and grand-parents from, the Caribbean, India, China and most other places. This makes London a wonderful place in which to live. The reason is that when people settle in a place, they don’t just buy a house and live there, but bring aspects of the culture of their “old country” with them.
A number of restaurants offering dishes from different parts of the world can be seen in London. You would come across French, Italian, Chinese, Indian and even Polish restaurants in London.
However, London’s multiculturalism isn’t just about food. Many types of people are gathered in one space, but the way they live differently shows in that space. They have different religious beliefs. Alongside one of the most famous old English churches, St Paul’s Cathedral, you’ll find mosques, temples and synagogues (犹太教堂).
London even speaks its own special kind of English. Language experts created the term “Multicultural London English” to identify the dialect (方言) of English that appeared at the end of the last century.
All of this makes London a very surprising and varied place to call your home. But, in a way, this has long been true. In the 18th century, the compiler (编纂者) of the first English dictionary, Samuel Johnson, once said: “He who is tired of London is tired of life.”
( )32. What is the purpose of the author by describing the situation on the underground and bus
A. To show that London is a multicultural city.
B. To explain why London appeals to tourists.
C. To prove that London is a great place to live in.
D. To inform us of how the population of Britain is made up.
( )33. What happen to the people settling in London from other places
A. They are forced to give up their native language.
B. They find it easy to buy a house in the city.
C. They introduce cultural practices from their original country.
D. They make up the majority of the population in the city.
( )34. Which of the following could be used as proof of London’s multiculturalism
A. The city is home to the famous building St Paul’s Cathedral.
B. The city has become a favourite destination for tourists abroad.
C. There are a variety of French restaurants in the city.
D. A new London dialect has appeared in recent years.
( )35. Why is Samuel Johnson mentioned in the last paragraph
A. To show what London was like in the 18th century.
B. To prove the cultural diversity of London from a historical aspect.
C. To inform the readers what to expect in London.
D. To introduce the first dictionary he complied.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Can you remember a time when somebody was kind to you Perhaps a person allowed you to go in front of them in a queue. Maybe your sister phoned you to ask how your week was going. Or perhaps a stranger or a friend helped you in a much deeper way. 36
Few people would disagree with the idea that a kind action is good for the soul. It is a win-win situation, leading to a sense of well-being for both the receiver and the giver. As a simple example, let’s imagine you have a workmate who always does a very good job. 37 Your workmate will be happy to receive some praise and, in addition, you will probably feel good about yourself for having spread a little joy.
38 The idea behind this is that it doesn’t take any major plan to be kind, just a little bit of effort. Many believe that kindness can be taught and that it is contagious (有感染力的). So by being kind to others, a brighter community and world will be created.
Some websites suggest more imaginative ways to show kindness. 39 The first is interpersonal kindness. Some examples are donating old clothes to charity or writing a positive online comment about a restaurant that you like. The second is environmental kindness, which could mean simply recycling or organising a group event to clean a local park or beach. The third category is less obvious: personal kindness, which means treating yourself kindly. Some examples are taking a walk in nature or setting yourself a goal to complain less. 40
A. Doing something good can be very hard.
B. You praise him and show your admiration.
C. Generally, these fall into three categories.
D. Offering kindness can bring happiness.
E. There are a million ways to offer kindness.
F. People are encouraged to do random acts of kindness.
G. If you are kind to yourself, you will naturally be kinder to others.

It’s your decision. Are you planning to 48 nothing happened Just keep quiet and hide what you’re not proud of ”
“I don’t know,” I 49 . “Things might get worse…”
“Let’s think it through,”he said finally. “If you were Mrs Ferguson, what would you do ” I didn’t know what she might do. I had been 50 that Mrs Ferguson would stay mad at me, so I ran. On the way home I imagined that she was a mean witch chasing me.
“Well,” I said, taking a deep breath, “one solution is to tell Mrs Ferguson I’m sorry and offer to fix her window.”
“If you call her,” asked Grandpa, “what’s the 51 that can happen ” I had to think for a moment. I realised that even if she did not accept my apology, it could not be any worse than seeing the 52 on Mum and Dad’s faces.
Grandpa smiled when he knew I had figured it out.
“Doing what’s right is not always 53 ,” he said, handing me the phone.“I’m proud of you.” Grandpa did not make me do it. It was always my 54 . As it turned out, Mrs Ferguson was very kind and we even became really close friends.
“Admitting what you’re not proud of is the hardest thing of all,”said Grandpa. “Choosing to be honest makes others trust you and respect you.”

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Ariana caught another whiff (臭味) and tried to hold her breath. She moved away slightly, but Ashley only moved closer and continued talking. Ariana felt trapped. She wanted badly to tell Ashley that she didn’t smell very good. But how could she do that without hurting her feelings Instead, she gathered the remains of her lunch to throw in the trash, thankful for the excuse to get some fresh air. She looked back to see Ashley eating quietly. Ashley’s hair was tangled (乱糟糟的), and her clothes were dirty. Ariana forced herself to go back to the table and take her seat, vowing that she would not sit with Ashley tomorrow.
When Ariana got home from school, she complained to her mother, “There’s a girl named Ashley who likes to sit next to me in school, but she smells bad.”
“She’s probably having a tough day,” said her mother.
“No, it’s not just one day. She smells bad a lot,” Ariana explained. “Nobody else likes to sit next to her, either.”
“I don’t think you understand Ashley’s situation, so let me ask you this…,” her mother’s tone was serious. “Who makes sure that your hair is combed every morning so you’ll look nice when you go to school ”
“You do,” answered Ariana.
“Who makes sure you’re bathed and cleaned every day And your clothes are washed and neatly ironed ”
“You and Daddy,” Ariana said again.
“Do you live in a nice home Do you have enough to eat ”
Ariana nodded, beginning to feel guilty. She was starting to understand now. Ashley couldn’t help her situation because she was only seven years old—the same age as Ariana. Grown-ups are supposed to take care of kids.
“Why doesn’t her family take better care of her ” Ariana asked.
“Not all children live in the best situation,” her mother said.“The best thing you can do for Ashley is to treat her with kindness and sympathy.”

W: Well, warm-up exercises and some slow stretches at the end of a workout will be necessary. You need to keep it in mind. And you can exercise at your own pace.
M: I see. But don’t you feel bored while running
W: Nope. I often listen to music. Sometimes I talk with my partner. And if possible, I try to find a different route or something interesting in the park.
M: It sounds interesting! I want to give it a try again. Can I go running with you next time
Text 10
Hi! I have to say I’ve had the pleasure to see so much of the world. Six years ago on a trip, my mother made a video of me dancing freely in Thailand. I put it on the Internet. Some friends started passing it around and soon millions of people watched it. How lucky I was! And since then, I’ve travelled to many countries on all seven continents, such as New Zealand, Britain and Canada. I love this kind of exciting life travelling around the world. What’s more, during the trip in Britain, I first met my husband.
Quite a few people wanted to dance along with me, so I started inviting them to join in almost everywhere I went. When I dance with people, I see them smile and laugh. It makes me truly excited. People want to feel connected with each other. They want to be heard and seen, and they’re curious to hear and see others from places far away. I share that idea in my book. It’s exactly what drives me to travel. Now I’m working on the book about my journeys. I hope you will like reading it in the future.

( C )28. How do people feel when they are suddenly in a new culture
A. Excited. B. Delighted.
C. Upset. D. Hopeless.

( A )32. What is the purpose of the author by describing the situation on the underground and bus
A. To show that London is a multicultural city.
B. To explain why London appeals to tourists.
C. To prove that London is a great place to live in.
D. To inform us of how the population of Britain is made up.
( C )33. What happen to the people settling in London from other places
A. They are forced to give up their native language.
B. They find it easy to buy a house in the city.
C. They introduce cultural practices from their original country.
D. They make up the majority of the population in the city.
( B )35. Why is Samuel Johnson mentioned in the last paragraph
A. To show what London was like in the 18th century.
B. To prove the cultural diversity of London from a historical aspect.
C. To inform the readers what to expect in London.
D. To introduce the first dictionary he complied.

36. E 37. B 38. F 39. C 40. G

Dear Chris,
I am more than delighted to write to share with you the Food Festival we celebrated in the campus on 14 May.
With enthusiasm and dedication, we students carefully planned our menus, and searched supermarket stands for the ingredients. The scene was nothing short of amazing, as we all came together to create a feast. When we took bites of the delicious dishes, our mouths watered, our eyes widened, and the sweet and satisfying flavours filled our senses.
The festival was highly praised not only because it gave us an opportunity to showcase our cooking talents, but also because it strengthened our bond as a community.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
