Around the world, people live in homes of many shapes and sizes. In some countryside, people live together with their family in a huge house with gardens or backyards. On the other hand, the buildings in cities are usually very close together.
A home can be any kind of building—large or small. Some people even have homes on boats, in tents or in caravans that can be moved around. Caravans are mobile homes. They are towed (拖,拉) by either a car or a huge truck. Some of them are holiday homes. We can see many families staying together in these caravans.
In the past, rich and important people built strong castles to keep their families safe. The castles were built on hill tops with high walls and some even had moats. Moats were deep and wide ditches (壕沟) filled with water. They made it difficult for enemies to attack.
Today, we have different ways of protecting our homes. Some homes are installed (安装) with video cameras and an alarm system. These will help to alert (向……发出警报) home owners if someone tries to break in.

Traditional Chinese culture is now becoming more and more popular all over the world.
As a foreigner from Canada, I’m a lover of Chinese culture. Several years ago, during a visit to a small village near Suzhou, I found some teenage girls were learning the traditional art of embroidery (刺绣). For centuries, Suzhou has been famous for its wonderful embroidery. Young girls there start to learn the art from an early age. I watched these “modern” girls working for a while. After one of the girls just finished a piece of work, I bought it as a gift for my brother. He felt quite happy and hung it in the living room in Canada.
What makes both Chinese and foreigners love embroidery so much The work shows us the great skills of craftsmen (工匠). It may look simple, but in fact it is the result of years of hard work. As one Chinese artist said, “One minute on stage takes ten years of hard work off stage.”
Many colleges in China are offering courses on traditional Chinese culture these years. The students who study traditional Chinese culture in colleges may not become true masters in the future. However, with people’s hard work, thousands of years later, lots of traditional Chinese culture is coming back to life.

73.When do young girls in Suzhou start to learn embroidery
74.Did the writer’s brother like the gift

Volunteering in the Community
Last weekend, I joined a community volunteering activity with my classmates. The activity was organized to clean up the park near our neighborhood and help the elderly.
On Saturday morning, we met at the park gate at 8 o’clock. We brought gloves, trash bags and some cleaning tools. First, we picked up the litter in the park. There was a lot of rubbish, such as plastic bottles, paper and food waste. It was tiring, but we worked hard. After cleaning the park, it looked much cleaner and more beautiful.
In the afternoon, we went to the community’s elderly center. We talked with the elderly people, listened to their stories and sang songs for them. Some of us helped them wash clothes and clean their rooms. An old grandma told me about her life when she was young. I learned a lot from her.
