On a cold and gray morning, National Park Service biologist Lidia D’Amico grabbed her binoculars (双筒望远镜) and radio and began walking around the island’s roads as usual.
On a typical day, she would spend her walk time watching birds. On this day, however, she spotted something strange: a “big figure” perching on a rock on the island’s northwest side. A closer look revealed the unknown object to be a baby sea lion, which was a rare sighting on the rock. It was even rarer because the creature was so far out of the water. “This sea lion had dragged itself all the way up the rocks and wasn’t moving, which I knew was unusual,” D’Amico explained.
The island is not a suitable place for mammals (哺乳动物), since it’s exposed to severe conditions and lacks a permanent source of water. A small rock around 100 yards off the north side of the island, called “Little Alcatraz”, is used by 7 to 8 seals during low tide (潮水). But the island is ruled by birds.
Upon returning a few hours later to check on the unexpected visitor, D’Amico found the sea lion unmoved, so she made a call to the Marine Mammal Centre. Even with the help of fellow park workers, it took great effort to load the 40-pound baby into a box and then they transferred him to the Marine Mammal Centre. Once safely ashore, the baby was picked up by the staff from the centre, who transported him to their animal hospital in the Headlands.
For the first month after his rescue, the little baby’s condition was “guarded”, and he was slow to recover. However, with treatment and feedings provided by the staff, he began to gain weight. After two months of treatment, a fat and healthy sea lion could walk slowly. The once ill-fed baby had been cleared to return to the wild. Recovered, he went into the waters of his new life with a new name: Alcatraz, the sea lion.

On the banks of Tanzania’s Lake Eyasi lives the world’s last hunter-gatherer tribe (部落)—the Hadza. They don’t grow food, raise animals or build houses. Instead they live a life unchanged for more than ten thousand years.
Their world is one of complete freedom—something modern society can barely imagine and is unlikely to ever experience, let alone have the skills to stay alive. Text messages and phone calls don’t exist. Nor do cars and electricity. No jobs, timetables, and social structures. No laws, taxes and unbelievably, no money—the closest thing to currency is the trade for a pair of shorts with a neighbouring tribe.
We spent our time with the Hadza hunting baboons (狒狒), a daily activity for the men. Their land is packed with sharp bushes, poisonous snakes and man-eating lions. But a successful hunting trip is the difference between eating or going hungry.
The Hadza diet consists mainly of honey, fruit and meat. Men often hunt in pairs to shoot animals with bows and arrows. The Hadza show us how to track animals, from baboons to snakes to lions. They are hugely skilled with their handmade bows and arrows—we have a go and barely get the arrow to go three feet in front of us.
The language of the Hadza is believed to be the oldest still-spoken language known to man. The Hadza don’t have conflict, and have no memory of starvation. Their population never reaches numbers that cannot be supported through hunting or gathering. They never get from their land more than they need.
Unlike modern-day office workers, the Hadza enjoy an extraordinary amount of free time. Their “work”—hunting for food—takes up around five hours of their day. They’ve been in such a state of peaceful existence for thousands of years.

Most city parks are places where you can escape from huge, ugly structures of metal and stone. The Manhattan High Line is different. Raised 25 feet above the ground, this large metal structure once supported a rail line. The line opened in 1934 to bring trains directly into factories. It was hardly used after the 1960s, and much of it was torn down. However, one part remained in a region of Manhattan called Chelsea. Chelsea was becoming high-class as restaurants, art galleries and apartments were built, but the ugly railway structure remained as a dead weight. Everyone knew that at some time, it would have to be removed.
But the High Line was not destroyed. In fact, now the old rail line serves as one of the most peaceful places in the city. It holds an incredible park, with beautiful gardens and great views of the city. The idea to turn the rail line into a park came from Joshua David and Robert Hammond. In 1999, they attended a meeting to decide how to deal with the High Line. David and Hammond were the only people at the meeting interested in saving the historical structure. Later on, when they asked railway officials to take them up to look at the High Line, they saw a mile and a hall of wild flowers growing in the middle of the city, and they realised that the High Line had potential to become a park. There was growing interest in improving city centres, and so the project quickly developed and money for construction was easily collected.
The first part of the High Line opened in 2009 and immediately became popular with tourists and locals alike. Each part of the park has a different atmosphere. Some areas are like balconies (阳台) with wonderful city views. Where the rail line goes betweenbuildings, trees are thickly planted. Other sections have wide lawns (草坪) and walkways with wild flowers. Only the final section remains the way it has been for the last fifty years.
( )32. What does the underlined part “a dead weight” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Something with historical interest.
B. Something with potential to be better.
C. Something which is a danger to people.
D. Something useless which slows progress.
( )33. Why did David and Hammond originally want to save the High Line
A. They wanted to reopen the train line.
B. They thought it had historical value.
C. They were interested in improving the city.
D. They thought it would become a good park.
( )34. Which of the following statements about the High Line is correct
A. All parts of it have the same atmosphere.
B. The first part gradually became popular.
C. One part of it remains the old way.
D. Trees were thinly planted in all areas.
( )35. What is the text mainly about
A. Closing a train line.
B. An unlikely place for a park.
C. Protection of cultural relics.
D. Improving city transport.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
When we arrived at the theme park in southern California after an hour’s drive, we discovered that the gates were closed. We knew that wildfires had been burning all over the area, but none were near our destination. We’d saved up so we could afford a trip to this theme park that the kids had been begging to visit. But because it’s located in a valley, smoke blown in from the fires made it unsafe for visitors.
I had to explain to four disappointed children that the highlight of our trip, which had planned for weeks was canceled. It had already been a hard year. My nine-year-old son had been diagnosed with diabetes (糖尿病) and my husband was out of work for months.
We had no idea what to do with a van (面包车) full of sad children. Then, we brainstormed. Disneyland was out of reach financially, but outside its gates was a massive LEGO store. We decided to take the children there and let them pick out LEGO sets to take home and build. They could spend as much time as they wanted exploring the store.
Driving ninety more minutes on the freeway, we could see smoke clouding the sky, getting thicker by the minute. Arriving outside Disneyland, the kids were excited to explore the LEGO store. While the children and dad shopped, my phone rang. It was my mother in Minnesota, wondering how we were getting on with all the fires around us. I was updating my mother about our revised plans outside the store when I felt a tap on my shoulder. Another tourist had overheard the conversation.
“My name’s Patty, and I have tickets to Disneyland,” the woman said. “We’re not going to use them, and I couldn’t help but hear your story. I’ve been looking for the right people to give them to.”

M: How about this purple blue dress here
W: No, honey, we need to get her something for her new apartment.
M: Okay, what about these pale blue scented candles

M: Excuse me, I need some information about some classical gardens of Suzhou near here.
W: What would you like to know
M: Well, first I’d like directions to Gusu District. I believe there lies the number one classical garden in Suzhou. It isn’t far, is it
W: No, Gusu District is about six miles east of here, the railway station, and you’re right, dating back to the Ming Dynasty, Zhuozheng Garden in Gusu District is listed as world heritage site and it is a must see.
M: Oh good. Now what about Liuyuan Garden featuring the Qing Dynasty’s garden landscaping And I also want to visit Tuisi Garden. Are they near each other
W: Hmm. Well, Liuyuan Garden is northwest, while Tuisi Garden is about eighteen miles southeast.
M: Eighteen miles southeast. Well, maybe I won’t go there this time.
W: I’d recommend visiting the Garden Museum next to Zhuozheng Garden and then you may want to visit the nearby Suzhou Museum, famous for its abundant and rare cultural relics of Ming and Qing Dynasties.
M: I see. Good, thank you.
W: You are welcome, sir.

W: I’m struggling to keep up with all the readings I usually end up rereading, but that feels like it takes forever and I’m constantly pressed for time. Any tips on how to manage it
M: Definitely one essential skill is knowing how to mark a book.
W: Well, how do you do it
M: First, read a whole paragraph before marking anything. Don’t mark too much. Around ten percent is usually enough. And I use different colors for different things. Main ideas are marked in yellow, important details in blue and new words in orange.
W: Smart. Are there other ways besides using colors for marking
M: Absolutely. Normally, question marks are used for the confusing part, dashes for extra notes. But before an exam, I prefer to change the question mark into a smiley face to create an optimistic atmosphere.
W: Sounds great. I’ll give it a try, thanks.
M: Sure, let me know if you need more tips.

A. She helped him go into the water.

( D )32. What does the underlined part “a dead weight” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Something with historical interest.
B. Something with potential to be better.
C. Something which is a danger to people.
D. Something useless which slows progress.
( B )33. Why did David and Hammond originally want to save the High Line
A. They wanted to reopen the train line.
B. They thought it had historical value.
C. They were interested in improving the city.
D. They thought it would become a good park.
( C )34. Which of the following statements about the High Line is correct
A. All parts of it have the same atmosphere.
B. The first part gradually became popular.
C. One part of it remains the old way.
D. Trees were thinly planted in all areas.
( B )35. What is the text mainly about
A. Closing a train line.

Dear Brian,
As for the upcoming field trip organised for our elective course, visiting the City Museum would be a fantastic choice in my opinion.
Firstly, the City Museum offers a rich cultural experience, allowing us to appreciate the local culture and traditions. Moreover, with its wide range of artworks and interactive displays, the museum provides a unique learning opportunity for us. Furthermore, the trip would be enjoyable, which would create lasting memories.
I am eagerly looking forward to this field trip and believe that visiting the City Museum will greatly enrich our understanding of our city.
Best regards,
Li Hua
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
I couldn’t believe my ears! I'd heard of random acts of kindness, but those types of things happened to other people, never to us. I couldn't imagine that this wonderful generous woman was sending all six of US to Disneyland ! With deep gratitude filling my heart and tears of joy spilling down my face, I hugged Patty tightly , exchanged personal information, and took a picture with her. As we said goodbye to each other, I felt Patty was no longer a stranger but forever a part of our family.
Paragraph 2:
I gathered my family and we hurried into Disneyland excitedly. I had expected we wouldn't have enough time to do much. After all, anyone who has visited Disneyland knows how long the lines are. However, because of the smoke in the air from the fires, Disneyland looked like an empty town. There were no lines at the most popular rides, and the children enjoyed riding them over and over without waiting. Our family had had the best day ever. We will never forget the miracle given to us by Patty, who would be called, in Disney terms, our fairy.
