To better understand how to support children and young people’s motivation to write in
school, we asked them what would make them want to write. Their responses offer valuable
insight into the conditions and experiences that develop genuine engagement with writing (see
Figure 1).
The findings indicate that cultivating environments that prioritize freedom of choice,
personal and social relevance, and meaningful engagement may be instrumental in enhancing
young people’s motivation to write in school.
Figure 1: Key factors that would stimulate a desire to write in school.
Figure 2: A word cloud of students topic preferences for writing.
When asked what they would most like to write about in school if they could choose,
young writers suggested a wide range of topics. A word cloud visualizes their preferences,
where the size of each word corresponds to its frequency in the responses (see Figure 2).
Our interviews with students also reveal that they are most motivated when writing allows
them to explore both the world around them and the worlds they imagine.
Overall, our research highlights that writing in school is most meaningful when it is rooted
in connection to self, to others and to the world, and experienced in its power to engage, bring
power, inspire thought and shape identity. As a result, it is suggested that school-based writing
should not be only about producing perfect texts but about cultivating young writers who are
invested, confident, curious and socially connected.
21.What is most likely to motivate students to write
A. Rewards. B. Autonomy. C. Topics. D. Experiences.
22.Which of the following would students probably prefer to write about
A.A famous song. B.A fashion trend.
C.A past civilization. D.A personal interview.
23.Who is the passage most probably intended for
A. Policy makers. B. Young writers.
C. Lab researchers. D. School educators.

In our exploration of literature this month, My Name is Miene stands out as an appealing
comic essay that has captured the hearts of many on social media. The fictional character,
Miene, is a blind dog who finds herself in a risky situation after getting separated from her
mother and injuring her paw, all while being chased by a crow. Ultimately, she is rescued and
finds a home with a caring family. The narrative follows Miene's comedic yet poignant journey
as she navigates the frightening world around her, struggling against her fears and pain. Her
perception of life, relying on her other senses instead of sight, offers a heartwarming
perspective that encourages readers to cheer for her.
One striking feature of this work is its substantial amount of text. The book is loaded with
a remarkable amount of written content, surprising for a comic essay, filled with hand-drawn
letters that create an extraordinary rhythm between the illustrations. The combination of text
and visuals is so impressive that readers often laugh out loud when recalling its funny moments,
even after closing the book.
Furthermore, the book includes notable literary references, providing insights into classic
works and figures. The rich narrative not only entertains but also evokes a profound
appreciation for life and existence. A particularly touching scene is when the lady of the house,
Rina, decides to adopt Miene, extending her hand and saying, "I will give you my twenty
years", which showcases the deep commitment one needs to take on such responsibility.
Despite Rina's heartfelt intentions, Miene dashes around energetically, representing the
spirit of adventure and resilience. This portrayal resonates with anyone who has faced trials but
still embraces life bravely, making the reading experience both enjoyable and meaningful.
There are numerous interesting works that can make one lose track of time, and such a unique
narrative is surely not to be missed.
24. What can be inferred about Miene from paragraph 1
A. She fails to fit in with her new family.
B. Her story blends struggles and warmth.

Chaotan One, the world’s first commercial power generator that uses supercritical carbon
dioxide (sCO ), has begun operations in China. This achievement breaks a century-old tradition
of using steam for power generation, marking a major improvement in efficiency.
The invention of the steam engine was a first step towards the Industrial Revolution that
changed the world. Over the years, the engine’s efficiency was further improved through
different designs and fuels; however, the medium for doing work remained the same- steam.
Scientists seeking further improvements in power efficiency noticed that a significant
portion of energy is wasted generating steam to drive turbines (涡轮机). Water needs to be
boiled first and needs to undergo a phase change to generate steam. Scientists have been
looking for a better medium to replace steam.
They found this in sCO . CO exists as a gas at room temperature and can be cooled to
form dry ice by reducing pressure and lowering temperature. When temperature is raised to 31℃
, and pressure is increased to 7.37 MPa, CO enters its supercritical state, where it exhibits
properties of both a liquid and a gas. In applications such as moving a turbine, this is extremely
useful since the gas-like state offers less resistance while the liquid-like state provides greater
push power.
The power generation process works like this: The CO is first pressurized into a
supercritical state. Then the sCO passes through a heat exchanger, absorbing heat from an
external heat source, and its temperature rises to 400-600℃ with a substantial increase in
internal energy. After that, it enters a turbine and expands rapidly, driving it to move at a high
speed and transforming thermal (热的) energy into mechanical energy, which is then further
turned into electrical energy for output. The CO remains in a supercritical state throughout the
entire process, with no phase change loss.
The success of the Chaotan One will likely start a new era in power generation, using CO
as a medium and bypassing the need to transform water into steam.
28. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2
A. Highlight the value of steam. B. Applaud the past contributions.
C. Outline the Industrial Revolution. D. State the background of a new discovery.
29. What is the biggest problem with steam power generation
A. Energy-intensive. B. Labor-demanding.
C. Noise-producing. D. Money-consuming.
30. What plays a key role in the high efficiency of Chaotan One
A. The durability of turbines. B. The quick commercialization of generators.
C. The easy availability of CO . D. The continuity of CO ’s supercritical state.
31. What is true about supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO ) according to the text
A. It exists only as a pure gas when in its supercritical state.
B. It can reach its supercritical state at room temperature and normal pressure.
C. It combines the low resistance of a gas-like state with the strong power of a liquid-like
state.
D. It undergoes a phase change from gas to liquid during the power generation process.

A wheeled robot rolls across the floor. A soft-bodied robotic star bends its five legs,
moving awkwardly. Powered by conventional electricity via plug or battery, these simple
robotic creations would be unremarkable, but what sets these two robots apart is that they are
controlled by a living entity (实体): a king oyster mushroom.
By growing the mushroom’s mycelium (菌丝体) into the robot’s hardware, a team led by
Cornell University researchers has engineered two types of robots that sense and respond to the
environment by using electrical signals made by the mushroom and its sensitivity to light.
The robots are the latest accomplishment of scientists in a field known as biohybrid
robotics who seek to combine biological, living materials such as plant and animal cells or
insects with artificial components to make partly living and partly engineered entities.
There’s still a long way to go before biohybrid robots go beyond the lab, but researchers
hope one day robot jellyfish may explore oceans, sperm-powered robots may be able to deliver
fertility (生育) treatments and cyborg cockroaches could search for survivors in the wake of an
earthquake.
“Biohybridization is an attempt to find components in the biological world that we can use,
understand, and control to help our artificial systems work better,” said Shepherd, a professor
of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Cornell University.
The team began by growing king oyster mushrooms in the lab from a simple kit ordered
online. The researchers chose this species of mushroom because it grows easily and quickly.
They cultivated the mushroom’s mycelium, which can form networks that, according to the
study, can sense, communicate and transport nutrients.
The team found it challenging to engineer a system that could detect and use the small
electrical signals from the mycelia to command the robot. “You have to make sure that your
electrode (电 极 ) touches in the right position because the mycelia are very thin,” said lead
author Anand Mishra. “Then you culture them, and when the mycelia start growing, they wrap
around the electrode.”
32.What is special about the two robots in the first paragraph
A.They can control living creatures.
B.They can make various movements.
C.They are partly mushroom and partly machine.
D.They are powered by king oyster mushrooms.
33.What does the author want to show by giving the examples in paragraph 4
A.The seriousness of the environmental issues.
B.The future possibilities of biohybrid robots.
C.The limitations of biohybrid robots beyond the lab.
D.The advantages of biohybrid robots over conventional ones.
34.What did the team find difficult when engineering the robots
A.Wrapping the electrode with the mycelia.
B.Arranging the electrode in the right order.
C.Developing a system to cultivate the mycelia.
D.Positioning the electrode accurately on the mycelia.
35.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A.King Oyster Mushrooms: the Magic of Nature
B.When Nature Meets Technology
C.How Technology Transforms Nature
D.Biohybrid Robotics: the Key to Social Development

Joining clubs, volunteering, and initiating meetups, my 26-year-old friend has tried
everything to make new friends. 36 She suspects her habit of joking with people too early
in friendships is to blame, as others often turn quiet and awkward.
The truth is, building meaningful friendships in adulthood is tough. The Times asked
psychologists to share tips for nurturing new friendships, with a focus on social skills. Here’s
what they said.
Switch up how you socialize. You are bound to meet people who socialize differently. You
may enjoy sarcasm (讽刺) while others may tend to be more sincere, for example. So when you
make a sarcastic joke to a new friend, observe their nonverbal cues. 37 Did they express
distaste for the joke
38 Anxious socializers often focus on crafting their next response instead of
listening. This makes them miss key cues. Being genuinely curious about others’ words lets
you continue conversations naturally.
Embrace small talk. Small talk is actually a necessary starting point for developing deeper
relationships. Keep a few small-talk topics handy, such as hobbies outside work, favorite
repeated books or films, or upcoming vacation plans. 39 .
Share in moderation. They recommend first asking “Would it be OK if I vent (发泄) a
little ” before sharing. Then check their responses. Leaning in, follow-up questions and eye
contact mean they’re receptive. Looking away signals discomfort.
40 So, keep initiating the catch-ups, accepting invites for casual hangs, attending
those after-work dinners and chatting with acquaintances at events.
A. Listen, really listen.
B. Be an active speaker in your conversations.
C. Have they gone quiet, restless, or awkward
D. Have you ever taken their feelings into account
E. Yet every new connection fades after just a few weeks.
F. The best way to improve any social skill is through practice.
G. These can help fill silences smoothly when small talk pauses.

My name is Mae. I’ve always been passionate about exploring and solving
problems--whether fixing a broken toy or figuring out how a phone app works. This led me to
join our school’s Coding(编程)Club. In our first lesson, Ms. Davis told us that coding is
more than writing lines of code. It is about using technology to make life easier for others.
“Your project,” she announced in class one day, “is to create a simple app that solves a
real-life problem.” “You have one week to prepare,” She added gently, hoping this would give
us enough time to find inspiration and finish the project.
The challenge stayed with me as I walked to my neighbor Mrs. Thompson’s apartment
after school. She had invited me for tea, as she often did on Tuesdays. Mrs. Thompson was
kind and cheerful, but lately she had been a little forgetful, often misplacing her keys or
repeating the same story twice without realizing it. When I arrived, she was in the kitchen.
“Mae! Good timing,” she greeted me warmly, and then stopped, glancing at the kettle.
“Did I already boil water for tea ”
I checked the kettle--it was still warm. We laughed about it as I poured water, and soon we
were chatting. Our conversation turned to her weekly book club with friends. Mrs. Thompson
smiled, talking about her two old friends. Mr. Brown arrived late for the game, and Mrs. Smith
failed to bring her glasses twice. “We’re quite a group,” she said.
Then her expression grew thoughtful. “We manage, of course. But sometimes I think
wouldn’t it be nice if something simply reminds us Take medicine. Water the plants. Friday
for book club.” She tapped her head with a soft laugh.
Her words sank in. At that moment, an idea formed in my mind. As I stood up to leave, I
smiled mysteriously, “Give me a few days, and I'll bring you a little surprise.”
“Oh I’ll try not to forget that,” she laughed.
