Have you ever made a paper pot to grow small plants It’s easy and eco-friendly (环保的). Here’s how our school science class teaches it. First, get a square piece of newspaper (20cm×20cm is best) and a small glass. Put the glass in the center of the paper. Second, fold the paper’s four corners one by one over the glass—make sure each corner touches the top of the glass so the pot keeps its shape later. Third, take the glass out carefully.Don’t rush this step,or the paper might unfold Then, fold the top edges of the paper down 1cm to make a “rim (边缘)”—this simple fold stops the pot from opening up when you add soil. Finally, fill the paper pot with some loose soil, plant a sunflower seed in it, and you’re done! Remember to water it once a week and keep it in a spot that gets 2-3 hours of sunlight every day. The science teacher Ms. Li says, “This activity connects art (paper-folding) and biology (plant growth). It takes about 15 minutes to make one pot, and each student can take two pots home. The Big Debate: Are rules (family, school, social) necessary We invited readers to share their views on whether rules (like family curfews, school uniform rules, or public littering bans) are important. Here are their opinions:
- Lily (14, middle school student): I used to hate our school’s uniform rule—I wanted to wear my own clothes. But last month, a new student felt nervous on her first day. She said seeing everyone in the same uniform made her feel “part of the group” right away. Now I think school rules help keep things fair and friendly. - Mr. Chen (42, father): My family has a “no phones at dinner” rule. At first, my 16-year-old son complained it was “boring.” But after two weeks, he started talking about his basketball games and his favorite books during meals. Family rules aren’t about control—they’re about bringing us closer. - Zoe (21, college student): I think some social rules are too strict. For example, the rule that “you must stand in line for buses” sometimes wastes time. Once, I was late for class because everyone refused to let me cut the line. Rules should be more flexible! (可变通的) - Aunt Mei (55, community worker): Last year, our neighborhood had no “no littering” rule. The park was full of trash, and kids couldn’t play there safely. We made the rule, and now the park is clean again. Social rules protect everyone’s rights—they’re not just “rules.”
