Airships were popular in the early 1900s. These aircraft can fly because they are filled with lighter-than-air gases. Some types have a rigid frame and all of them have a cabin(机舱) below the main body. Pilots and passengers are carried in this cabin.
Back in the 1900s, most airships were filled with hydrogen(氢气). The gas burns easily. In 1937, an airship called the Hindenburg caught fire during landing. Thirty-six people died as a result. The sad thing scared people away from airships. At that time, planes were improving quickly. Since then, people have been using planes for most air travel.
Now, an American company called Lighter Than Air(LTA) Research wants to change that. LTA Research has been working on its airship, Pathfinder 1, for about ten years.
The new airship, about 123 metres long, is the largest of its kind since the 1930s. It uses helium(氦气). This gas is also lighter than air but does not burn. The helium fills 13 separate parts of the airship. About 10, 000 long carbon fibre tubes(碳纤维管) make up a strong frame to protect these parts. The airship is powered by 12 electric motors. The electricity comes from either batteries or generators(发电机). With these motors, the airship can take off and land without a runway.
Pathfinder 1 can carry about 4 tons of goods. It can fly at a speed of up to 120 kilometres per hour. In November 2023, the airship made its first test flights in California. LTA Research hopes to show that their airships can be used to move goods quickly without polluting the air.
52.What does the underlined word "that" in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. Planes were improving quickly after the airship had a crash.
B. People preferred to travel by plane rather than by airship for safety.
C. LTA Research has been working on its airship for about ten years.
D. Airships were uncomfortable and not big enough for pilots or passengers to stay in.
53.How does the author describe the new airship in Paragraph 4
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving examples.
C. By raising questions. D. By making comparisons.
54.What does the underlined word "powered" in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Protected. B. Driven. C. Stopped. D. Designed.
55.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. The history of airships in the 1900s
B. Pathfinder 1: a new safe and green airship
C. The differences between planes and airships
D. LTA Research: a famous American company

If you ask Jeff Shea who is from California where he is going or where he has been to, you better get a drink, sit back in your favourite chair and refresh yourself to hear a long story.
The sixty-year-old adventurer (探险家) Shea has walked across Africa, Europe, America, Asia and other continents. In his spare time, he has also climbed the highest mountains all over the world. When he climbed Mount Qomolangma which is in China, he did not take the traditional ‘easy route (路线)’—the southern side of the Himalaya Mountains from India and Nepal, but the most dangerous northern side from Xizang, China.
Shea travels in his own way, seldom moving directly from Point A to Point B or just following anyone else’s route. Travel clubs for country collectors, divide (划分) the world up into 325, 875 and 1281 parts, but Shea has his own idea. He divides the world into 3978 parts. He has visited 2,330 of them and decided to complete the rest of them before his travelling days are over.
Shea’s love for traveling, however, isn’t about these numbers, life goals or risks (风险). For him, travel is like a holy activity, one that makes the mind and one’s horizons larger. In 2012, he founded (组建) an organization called World Parks in order to achieve what some people would view as a quixotic (狂想的) goal: making world leaders protect wild places as “world” parks rather than “national” parks. He is nothing if he is not ambitious (野心勃勃的). “My goal is to change the world,” he said.
56.Jeff Shea is a(n) ________ from California, the USA.
A. club organizer B. world leader
C. peak climber D. English adventurer
57.Mount Qomolangma, also called Mount Everest, is in ________ .
A. India B. Nepal
C. China D. all of the above
58.What does the italicized word “continents” mean in Paragraph 2
A. 大陆 B. 岛屿 C. 山峰 D. 海峡
59.Which is NOT true according to the passage
A. Jeff Shea has been climbing peaks all around the world for over 60 years.
B. Jeff Shea suggests the leaders of the world take action to really protect the wild places.
C. Facts show that Jeff Shea is very ambitious.
D. Jeff Shea did not climb so many high peaks for the numbers, life goals and risks.
60.This article suggests that ________.
A. only the world leaders can do something to change the world
B. we should climb as many high mountains as we can before our travelling days are over
C. World Parks, an organization founded by Jeff Shea is a club for climbing mountains
D. every one of us should do something to make the world better for humans and animals
六、任务型阅读-完成表格:本大题共1小题,共15分。
61.阅读下列短文,根据短文中的信息完成文后的表格。(每空一词)
After-school activities can be a wonderful thing and continue our children’s education through the school holidays. However any old activity does not do the right job, every activity should be useful and helpful and of course, enjoyable. So what matters when we make the decision as to what our youngster is going to take part in
Above all, you should know what you expect your child to learn from the activity, for example, learning how to play a musical instrument, how to draw or whatever. Any activity should be a challenge to a child. Taking on the challenge and achievement can help a quiet or shy child become more confident.
Safety must be the most important thing that you should consider of any activity. But remember nothing can be made to be 100% safe and still be interesting. You should talk to an instructor and ask questions before deciding, this is the course you want your child to be part of. Be careful of the activity itself with too much competition because that can cause problems and kill off enjoyment. Do not forget that this is costing you money so try to be sure that you are getting value for it. Of course there’s no doubt that discussing things with your child first is also a good idea.
Parents have different opinions about it though. On the one hand there are those who decide all the things for the child and adults make the running. On the other hand there are those who much prefer to leave the child to choose on his or her own and decide what they want to do during their holiday. Some say that the second method encourages children to better think for themselves and that the first makes them depend more on adults. Only you can decide which one you are and which is the best for you and your child. Remember that you are only young once and childhood will be gone soon forever. All work and no play is not the idea.
