“seldom”和“hardly ever”在英语中都有“很少、几乎不”的意思,用于表示频率低,但它们在用法和语义上有一些细微区别:
语义侧重
seldom:侧重于某事发生的频率不高,次数较少,但还是会偶尔发生。
I seldom go to the cinema.
我很少去看电影,但还是会有去的时候
hardly ever:强调几乎从不,接近完全不发生的程度,比seldom的否定意味更强。
I hardly ever eat junk food.
