Text 10
M: Did you know that regular physical activity can significantly improve mental health Exercise is not only good for the body, but also plays a crucial role in enhancing mood and reducing feelings of anxiety and depression. [18] In fact, studies show that people who engage in at least half an hour of moderate exercise most days report feeling happier and more relaxed.
Other research suggests that even shorter periods of intense exercise or longer sessions of light activity can produce similar benefits.
Activities like walking, cycling, and swimming can help the brain release chemicals that make people feel good. These natural substances reduce stress and create a sense of well-being.
[19] Furthermore, exercise can improve sleep quality, which is important for overall mental health.
[20] Researchers conducted a study with 300 participants over a six-month period. Half of the group committed to a regular exercise routine, while the other half continued with their usual lifestyle. The findings showed that those who exercised experienced a 40% reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression compared to those who didn’t.
So, if you’re feeling low or stressed, consider getting active as a simple yet effective way to improve your mood!

Jon Jandai grew up in an agricultural village in Northeastern Thailand where he recalls his family and neighbors working for two hours a day for only two months a year, leaving them time for post-lunch naps (小睡), monthly festivals, and plenty of self-reflection.
As a young adult, Jandai worked as a security guard in Bangkok for seven years, where he was disappointed by long hours, little pay, a crowded apartment, and a repetitive diet of noodles and fried rice. He returned home to recreate the agricultural life he missed, learning to farm organically — with a wide variety of Thai fruits and vegetables, and build his own house out of packed mud.
Over time, Jandai and his wife, Peggy Reents, built a community that grew their own food and constructed their own homes on nine acres (英亩) of land outside of Chiang Mai. In 2003, they founded Pun Pun, which is an organic farm and intentional community, as well as a center for seed-saving and sustainable living and learning, just north of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Members of the Pun Pun community also run two restaurants in Chiang Mai, where they serve local, organic, GMO-free food, created to highlight the value of the diverse traditional seed varieties grown and saved at Pun Pun.
When Jandai isn't communicating with farmers or teaching workshops on earthen home-building and organic farming, he spends free time on Pun Pun with around 20 other full-time residents, including several homeschooled children. Members of the community work on the farm for a couple of hours a day, cook and eat collectively, and spend the rest of their days napping, chatting, and having fun. They earn less than Thailand's minimum wage, Jandai says, but are economically secure because they spend even less.
24. What was the life in Jandai's village like
A. It was difficult but fun-filled.
B. It was carefree and peaceful.
C. It was relaxing but boring.
D. It was busy and stressful.
25. Why did Jandai quit his job in Bangkok
A. He found it hard to make a good living.
B. He disliked its food and his coworkers.
C. He made a serious mistake at work.
D. He had to take care of his parents.
26. What can be learned about Pun Pun
A. It was set up 30 years ago.
B. It is located near Bangkok.
C. It is a multi-purpose complex.
D. It has two branches in Chiang Mai.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Pun Pun: a sustainable home
B. Thailand: a country worth exploring
C. Jon Jandai: a villager with diversity in mind
D. Jon Jandai: farmer, builder and man of leisure

Around 1745, Chinese emperor and poet Qianlong was sailing on the Yangtze River when he encountered a breathtaking sight: a group of what we now call Yangtze finless porpoises emerged from the water’s surface. “Porpoises chased moonlight on silvered tides, as dragons summoned storm—clouds loom in sight,” he wrote in a poem.
Almost 300 years later, scientists combed ancient Chinese poems to map the historical range of this critically endangered species—the world’s only freshwater porpoise, with about 1,250 wild individuals. By tracking mentions across dynasties, they aimed to better understand threats to this species.
“Access to past data allows us to detect when declines began and correlate those changes with potential threats like habitat destruction, climate change, overhunting, or the introduction of invasive species,” says Zhang, an ecologist at the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Zhang and her colleagues turned to ancient poems because official records rarely mentioned these animals. Using a database of Chinese literature, they searched historical names of the animal across dynastic poetry, manually checking each mention to ensure it referred to the porpoise and not other animals. They identified 724 poems mentioning the porpoises. Half contained geographic data.
This window into the past showed a 65% range loss over 1,400 years, accelerating in the past century. While poems from the distant past mentioned porpoises in tributaries and lakes along the Yangtze, in more recent poems, these references dramatically decreased. The researchers concluded the population has declined 91%.
“The study helps understand past species distributions and human-caused biodiversity losses,” says macroecologist Jens-Christian Svenning, who was not involved with the new research. For example, scientists reconstructed the former composition of animals in Greece using ancient epic poems. Though there can be challenges to this approach—and sometimes inaccuracies—there’s “much potential” to apply this method to other species and in other areas of the world.
28.How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph
A. By giving an example. B. By recalling an event.
C. By analyzing a poem. D. By representing a scene.
29.What were the scientists trying to do
A. Review official historical records. B. Trace past range for threat analysis.
C. Count names in ancient poetry. D. Evaluate human threats to porpoises.
30.What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning Greek epic in paragraph 6
A. Solution to data inaccuracies. B. Potential application of the strategy.
C. Need to involve more researchers. D. Possible direction for further study.
31.What is the text mainly about
A. Qianlong’s poetic legacy. B. Freshwater species decline.
C. Ancient texts aiding science. D. Global biodiversity conservation.

Intersections are deadly places, where more than half of all car crashes occur. A study shows that solving part of this public health crisis could come down to a simple, surprising tool. It’s not a new traffic signal or a big structure: it’s a bucket of paint.
Art projects painted onto streets and intersections significantly improve safety, reducing the rate of crashes involving cars and pedestrians (行人) by up to 50% and all crashes by 17%, according to the study. These road art projects include multi-colored wall decorations and paint jobs on the streets, crosswalks, and asphalt (沥青) in and around busy intersections. Often bright and hard for drivers to miss, they tend to cause drivers to slow down, be more careful, and be more attentive to pedestrians.
The simple interventions have been adopted as part of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Asphalt Art Initiative, which has issued funds to 41 U.S. cities and three European cities. This study focused on some of these projects, and its findings provide data to suggest they can make intersections safer.
Sadik-Khan, a former commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation, started with a simple paint job on the street and some plastic traffic posts. The project had a positive effect on travel times, increased pedestrian activity, and even benefited businesses in the area. Now, such projects are being extended across the country with similar benefits. Some were completed for just a few thousand dollars. A few cost even hundreds.
They don’t automatically translate into safety improvements, though. The study found that asphalt art projects in Atlanta and Decatur, Georgia, weren’t related to crash reductions, with crash rates increasing 41% and 28% respectively.
But Bloomberg Philanthropies plans to continue the work. They’ll give $25,000 to as many as 20 European cities to do their own road art projects. With decreased crashes reported in the study, Sadik-Khan is hoping other cities will see the benefit of doing these kinds of projects.
32.What do we know about road art projects
A. They need a great deal of money. B. They function permanently.
C. They raise concerns in drivers. D. They help drivers concentrate.
33.What does the underlined word “interventions” refer to in paragraph 3
A. Financial investment plans. B. Street painting projects.
C. Traffic control regulations. D. Wall decoration practices.
34.What can be inferred about the Asphalt Art Initiative’s future strategy
A. It will expand despite mixed outcomes.
B. It will replace traditional traffic methods.
C. It will focus on suburban intersections next.
D. It will prioritize European cities over U.S. cities.
35.What is the best title for the text
A. Bloomberg’s Initiative Transforms American Arts
B. Colorful Roads Boost Local Tourism in Major Cities
C. Innovative Traffic Signals Enhance Pedestrian Safety
D. Cost-Efficient Street Art Ensures Safer Urban Roads
“help drivers concentrate (帮助司机集中注意力)”是“be more attentive”(更专注)的同义转述。
第四段介绍该项目多重效益——提升安全(positive effect on travel times),激活街区(increased pedestrian activity)并带动商业(benefited businesses)且低成本(just a few thousand dollars)。 故选A。

Can you reach down and touch your toes without bending your knees Can you reach both arms overhead If these sound like a struggle, you may be lacking flexibility. 36 It helps you perform most sporting activities and may prevent muscle injuries. Improving flexibility is surprisingly easy, research says. Here’s “How”.
How long
We found holding a stretch for around four minutes in a single session is good for an immediate improvement in flexibility. Any longer, and you don’t appear to get any more improvement. For permanent improvements in flexibility, it looks like you need to stretch a muscle for longer—around ten minutes per week for the biggest improvement. 37
How hard
You can think of stretching as being hard, when you stretch into pain, or easy, when the stretch you feel isn’t uncomfortable. 38 Both hard and easy stretching equally improve flexibility.
How often
39 What is important is that you aim for up to ten minutes per week for each muscle that you stretch. So, for example, you could stretch each muscle for a little more than one minute a day, or five minutes twice a week. The amount of time you should spend stretching will finally depend on how many muscles you need to stretch.
On the whole, it doesn’t matter what muscle you stretch, how old you are, or whether you are a couch potato or an experienced athlete. 40 As you can see, it really isn’t too much of a stretch to become more flexible.
A. Everyone can improve their flexibility.
B. But this doesn’t need to occur all at once.
C. However, the best advice is to visit a qualified health professional.
D. Improving flexibility doesn’t depend on weekly stretch frequency.
E. Flexibility is the ability to move a joint through its full range of motion.
F. The good news is that how forcefully you carry out the stretching doesn’t seem to matter.
G. The frequency of stretching required to boost your flexibility is higher than what you expect.
选项F的“how forcefully”(力度)呼应本段标题“How hard ”
40.A 前文否定年龄、体质差异的影响(couch potato or an experienced athlete),说明无论什么人都可以提高柔韧性。 选项A的“improve their flexibility”与结尾句中的“become more flexible” (提升柔韧性)为同义复现。

pupil “小学生”; beginner “初学者”; gardener “园丁”。
upcoming “即将发生(或来临)的”; profound “深远的”; secret “秘密的”; complicated “复杂的”。
shared “共同的”; temporary “暂时的;临时的”; professional “专业的”; accepted “公认的”。
bond “建立关系”; recognize “认出;认可”; challenge “挑战”; amuse “娱乐;逗笑”。
encouraged “感到鼓舞的”; fascinated “入迷的”; refreshed “精神振作的”。
weed out “清除,剔除,淘汰”; figure out “弄清楚;弄明白;计算”; pull down “拆毁”; keep up “维持”。
hesitantly “迟疑地”; suddenly “突然”; impatiently “不耐烦地”。
look at “看”; engage with “与……沟通”; bump into “撞上”; attend to “照料”。
shout “吼叫”; whisper “低语;小声说”; argue “争辩道”。
solution “解决方法”; opportunity “机会”; surprise “惊喜”。
gesture “用手势表示;用动作示意”; race “快速移动”; kneel (knelt) “跪下”; bow “鞠躬”。
wisdom “智慧”; principle “原则;原理”; theme “主题”; theory “理论”。
53.A 空处与problems并列,应用负面词, 结合首段中的“the pressure of 2 college applications”可知,此处指未来的压力。 work “工作”; ambition “抱负”; growth “成长”。
joy “高兴;愉快;乐趣”; process “过程”; goal “目标”; burden “负担”。
55.D 空处呼应上文的“Don’t forget to appreciate the roses”,表记得欣赏“玫瑰”。struggle “挣扎;努力”; pretend “假装”; manage “设法完成”。

Sumi's daughter Anna had always been called "Number 23.”Every time the school released exam results,Anna would always end up in 23rd position among 50 pupils.Always 23,regardless of topic or term.Every time Sumi heard that nickname,it caused her concern.
When Sumi stayed with her friends, their discussion nearly always turned to their children. You know how it goes-one parent discusses their child's piano honors, another boasts about math olympiads or leadership responsibilities. While others were honoring these “great youngsters,”all Sumi could think about was Anna and her unpleasant nickname,Number 23.
Sumi had done everything to help Anna with school-hired professional tutors, bought fancy stationery, even packed brain food. And Anna tried. She gave up sketching, paper cutouts, and many others. She moved from one class to another, endlessly trying. But then the indicators started showing- she lost her appetite, couldn't sleep, and sweated all the time.Eventually, she got terribly sick. That was when Sumi gave in.She stopped pressing and Anna bounced back to being the cheery little child they knew.
One day,Sumi and her friends went on a weekend trip with their families.During lunch, two kids got into a heated quarrel over a single slice of dessert. No one could calm them down. Then Anna stepped in."Let's flip(抛 )a coin,"she said.Simple as that.Boom-problem solved.Everyone was astonished.
Later,on the journey back, they got delayed in traffic. The kids were getting restless.Anna She started delivering jokes like a big sister.Even the adults laughed. Then she took the leftover candy boxes and started changing them into animals-paper elephants, lions, and birds. Before everyone said goodbye, she presented one to each youngster as a gift. The other parents were shining with appreciation. For the first time in years,Sumi felt something well up in her chest-pride.

Paragraph 2:
That afiternoon,Anna returned home, the Class Star certificate in hand. She smiled brightly and told her mother,"I think my friends voted for me because they like my paper animals andjokes." Sumi hugged her tightly and said,“You're a beautiful angel,Anna.I didn't realize my little girl was a real-life hero.”Looking at Ann's happy face,Sumi now realized that every child has their own unique strengths that cannot be measured by grades alone.Being Number 23 didn't define her daughter's worth -it was simply one small part of the wonderful person she was becoming.

26. What can be learned about Pun Pun
A. It was set up 30 years ago.
B. It is located near Bangkok.
C. It is a multi-purpose complex.
D. It has two branches in Chiang Mai.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Pun Pun: a sustainable home
