一、任务型阅读
My name is Lin Tao. I’m in Grade Eight. Recently, our school held a career talk and I was very interested in it. After the talk, I have a clear career dream—I want to be a computer engineer.
I like computers very much. I often spend my free time learning computer knowledge and playing computer games. I’m good at math and science, which are very important for a computer engineer. My computer teacher said that I have a talent for computer learning and he encouraged me to stick to my dream.
To be a good computer engineer, I know I need to face many growing pains and work hard to overcome them. First, I need to improve my English, because many computer books and materials are in English. I used to be weak in English, so I read English articles every morning and do more exercises after school. Now my English has improved a lot. Second, I need to learn more computer skills. I take a computer course on weekends and I practice programming (编程) every day. Sometimes I can’t work out a programming problem and I feel upset, but I never give up. I ask my computer teacher for help and keep trying until I solve it.
Through these efforts, I have got a lot of gains. I have become more hard-working and patient. I also learn that no dream is too big and no effort is too small. I know there are still many difficulties ahead, but I will keep working hard. I believe that my growing pains will turn into gains and I will realize my career dream one day.

In 2026, our school held a “Dream Career & Growth Story” sharing meeting. Three students shared their experiences of chasing career dreams and overcoming growing pains.
Zhao Yan, 14: “My dream is to be a doctor. My grandmother was seriously ill last year, and the doctors saved her life. Since then, I’ve wanted to help sick people. But my growing pain is that I’m afraid of seeing blood. To get over this, I started reading medical books and watching educational videos about medicine. I also volunteered at a community clinic to get used to medical scenes. Now, I’m not afraid anymore. My gain is that I’ve learned to be brave and responsible.”
Li Ming, 13: “I want to be a teacher. I love working with children and sharing knowledge. But I’m very shy—I can’t even answer questions in class. My English teacher suggested I join the debate club. At first, I was nervous, but I kept practicing. Now, I can speak in front of the whole school. I’ve gained confidence and communication skills. I know that being a teacher requires courage to speak, and I’m getting closer to my dream.”
Chen Xi, 14: “My dream is to be a painter. I love drawing, but my parents didn’t support me at first. They thought drawing would affect my study. This was my biggest growing pain. I talked to my parents seriously, showing them my paintings and promising to balance study and drawing. I made a schedule to finish homework first and then draw for 30 minutes every day. Gradually, my parents saw my progress in both study and drawing, and they started to support me. My gain is that I’ve learned to communicate with others and keep my promises.”
All three students agreed that growing pains are necessary for growth. They encourage every teenager to hold onto their dreams and face difficulties bravely.

Chen Jianguo dreamed of having his own business in Beijing about 16 years ago. But his father asked him to take his place as a truck driver. Although Chen disliked the job, he didn’t want to make his father sad. He took the job as a truck driver. Then he got married and had a son.
“I got quite good pay, but life was boring there during those years. Most of the time I had nothing to do.” said Chen. So Chen decided to give up his job and come to Beijing. His wife agreed that he should go for his dream. So did his son.
Chen has been a food deliveryman for a month. He works for 15 hours every day and hardly has time for lunch at noon. “I want to give a better life to my wife and little son.” he said. “I must work harder and try to become the best food deliveryman at my station.” Chen likes his job because he can meet many different people.

Most people have never heard of a pet detective before watching the old movie Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. However, real-life pet detectives are different from the noisy and funny detective Ventura in the movie. They are trained experts who take their jobs very seriously.
Liu Wei, a man from Shanghai, is quite famous in this new business. In 2012, he read an article about pet detectives by chance, and he decided to become one. At first, his family didn’t support him because it was a new industry. However, Liu didn’t give up. Now he has a 12-member team working with him. They receive about 30 orders every month.
“It’s a great sense of achievement when I finally find a missing pet after days of efforts,” he said. To find a missing pet, Liu waits in the long grass secretly, checks underground pipelines carefully and searches in the parking lots. It’s very common for him to walk tens of thousands of steps a day. Liu also makes good use of modern tools while searching.
The pet detective business has grown in China in recent years as more people keep pets at home. Hiring a pet detective is not cheap. It can cost from a few thousand to more than 10,000 yuan, but it’s worth it for pet owners. “They are not just animals. They are members of the family,” Liu said.
So far, Liu’s team has helped reunite more than 1,000 lost cats, dogs and birds with their worried, sad owners.

新素材 [小伙为救同学缺考] Imagine you are on your way to take a very important exam. Suddenly, one of your classmates falls down beside you. This is exactly what happened to Jiang Zhaopeng, a 17-year-old student at a vocational school in Shandong on 10th May 2025. Jiang was on his way to take the Shandong Provincial Spring College Entrance Examination, which is a college entrance exam in China. His classmate had a heart problem and stopped breathing. Jiang didn’t think twice. He quickly used the CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation, 心肺复苏) skills he learned at school to help his classmate. With the help of the driver, they drove to the hospital in just 7 minutes. They even ran through six red lights on the way. In the end, Jiang’s classmate got better, but Jiang missed his Chinese exam.
This story became very popular on the Internet. More than 2 million people online said Jiang was a hero. They said, “He passed the most important test in life.” On 14th May, the Shandong Education Authority decided to give Jiang a special make-up exam. They used backup test papers to ensure fairness. Both Jiang and the driver, Wang Tao, got “Bravery Certificates” from the local government.
Teachers and experts said this showed how useful the first-aid skills we learned in school could be. These skills can help save lives in real emergencies (突发事件). When people asked Jiang about missing the exam, he said, “We can take exams again, but we can’t bring a life back if it’s gone.”
This event teaches us that being kind is more important than getting good grades. As an expert said, “Exams test our knowledge, but Jiang’s decision showed his good character, and he did very well in that test.” Jiang’s story tells us that saving someone’s life is the biggest success of all.

Wang Qian was a lovely girl, who never argued (争吵) with her parents. But when she became an eighth-grader, things started to change. “We often argue, sometimes because of unimportant things,” she said.
Maybe Wang has got the “eighth-grade syndrome (综合征)”. Some experts think eighth-graders usually suffer a lot because of the changes in their body and mind. The lack (缺乏) of support is also a possible reason. Wang’s classmate Liu Shijia is an example. “The exams in Grade 8 are more difficult, but my parents still don’t support me,” she said sadly.
As eighth-graders enter the rebellious phase (叛逆期), they want to be free and have their own ideas. The survey shows that eighth-graders may try to persuade (说服) their parents when they have different ideas. Wang feels this deeply. She thinks there is nothing wrong with playing with boys, but her parents don’t agree with her. They often argue about this.
To deal with these problems, an expert from Jiangsu gives useful advice to eighth-graders. “First, calm down and pay more attention to your studies. Second, develop some interests and share them with your parents. Finally, learn about your changes and know yourself well. Then try to accept them,” she said.

Today our group had to make a volcano model for science class. There are three of us: Sharla, Tony and me. At first, we couldn’t agree on anything. Sharla wanted the volcano to look like a real one, but Tony thought it should be colorful. I just wanted to finish it fast. We all felt angry and sad. We even argued about the base (底座) of the volcano, and Tony didn’t want to touch the paste (浆糊). I thought our group could not work together at all.

Yesterday, our science teacher Mrs. Holt talked to us. She said: “A good team listens to everyone’s ideas. You need to find a way to make everyone happy.” This morning, we tried again. I asked everyone to share their best ideas. Sharla agreed to make the volcano’s shape real, Tony said he could paint bright colors on the rock, and I promised to make the base carefully. Liu Lianman, one of the climbers, fell back four times. He knew he could not climb further, but he chose to be a “human ladder” for his teammates. He lowered his body and let Qu Yinhua stand on his shoulders. Every second was painful, but Liu made every effort to hold on. In the end, he managed to help his three teammates climb up. Their oxygen was running low then. It was dangerous to climb without it, but Liu gave all his oxygen to his teammates so that they could carry on. Teamwork is like magic that helps us achieve amazing things! No matter what we do, working together makes everything better. However, it is not always easy to build a good team. Let’s learn how to build a strong team together!
A good leader is the heart of a successful team. Leaders should cheer teammates up, listen to ideas, help solve problems and so on. For example, leaders can praise team members’ efforts and help them set clear goals. When leaders show kindness and confidence, team members feel safe and encouraged.
Communication is the glue that holds teams together. We need to express our feelings and ideas clearly so that we can understand each other better. Good communication helps us a lot during teamwork.
Disagreements are normal in any team. When arguments happen, don’t run away! The best way is to quickly solve problems face to face. The leader should help people talk calmly and listen to their opinions instead of taking sides (支持某一方).
The team leader must set a good example. If the leader arrives late or is tired of work, team members might follow. But if the leader works hard with a smile, everyone will feel encouraged. A leader’s spirit is like the sunshine that lights up the whole team.
