Think about the questions below. Share your answers with your classmates.
1 What do you think of Robert's experience dealing with the differences
I think Robert's experience is interesting and warm. At first, he found it hard to get used to the differences, but he’s open-minded—he understands these differences are just different ways of being polite in different cultures. Also, his attitude of respecting Chinese manners makes his experience meaningful.

Suppose you will travel in another city. Talk with your partner about manners.
Lily: Hi Amy! I’m planning a trip to Jiangsu this summer. Could you tell me something about local manners there
Amy: Sure, Lily! First, do you know how to address the elders you meet
Lily: Just call their names like we do in the UK
Amy: No. Instead of using their given names, you should call them “Shushu” (uncle) or “Ayi” (aunt) with their surnames. That’s a sign of respect.
Lily: Got it. How about table manners when people treat me to meals
Amy: Oh, that’s interesting. When you’re a guest, the hosts will keep adding food to your plate. And when they praise you for eating well, they usually behave in a modest way—they’ll say “The food is not good enough” even if it’s delicious!
Lily: That’s so different from us. We’ll just say “Thank you” directly.
Amy: Right! Also, normally, people will offer you tea as soon as you enter their homes. Don’t refuse it, or they’ll think you’re being polite on purpose.
Lily: Wow, that’s useful. I’m so pleased to learn these.
Amy: I’m glad to help. I’m sure you’ll feel at home soon if you follow these tips.
