【改编自译林必修三U4】
Another value of science is the intellectual enjoyment it can provide us with. When we look at any question deeply enough, we feel the excitement and mystery coming to us again and again. With more knowledge comes a deeper, more wonderful mystery, inspiring one to look deeper still. Never concerned that the answer may let us down, with pleasure and confidence we turn over each new stone to find unimagined strangeness leading on to more wonderful questions and mysteries. Thanks to the scientific effort, we have been led to imagine all sorts of things more fantastic than poets and dreamers of the past ever could.
I would now like to turn to a third value that science has. The scientist has a lot of experience with ignorance and doubt and uncertainty, and this experience is of very great importance. When a scientist doesn't know the answer to a problem, he is ignorant. When he has an idea as to what the result is, he is uncertain. And when he is pretty sure of what the result is going to be, he is still in some doubt.
Now, we scientists take it for granted that it is perfectly possible to live and not know. But our freedom to doubt was born out of a deep and strong struggle against authority in the early days of science. In order to progress, we must not forget the importance of this struggle;we must recognize our ignorance and leave room for doubt. Permit us to question—to doubt—to not be sure.
It is our responsibility as scientists, knowing the great progress that is the fruit of freedom of thought, to declare the value of this freedom; to teach how doubt is not to be feared but to be welcomed and discussed; and to demand this freedom as our duty to all coming generations.
1.What will science bring us according to paragraph 1
A.Psychological satisfaction.
B.The technological breakthrough.
C.The intellectual enjoyment.
D.The improvement in life.
2.What did the author stress in paragraph 3
A.The value of science.
B.The importance of doubting.
C.The feeling of ignorance.
D.The importance of being sure.
3.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To discuss the benefits and limitation of science.
B.To explain the process of scientific discovery.
C.To emphasize the importance of scientific value.
D.To compare science with other fields.

(2024·福建师大附中高一期中)For lots of kids, toddlerhood (幼儿期) is an important time for friendship. Studies show that the earlier kids learn to form positive relationships, the better they are at relating to others as teenagers and adults. Playing together also helps these kids practice social behaviors, such as kindness, sharing, and cooperation.
Even so, how quickly your child develops into a social creature may also depend on his or her temperament (性格). Some toddlers are very social, but others are shy. In addition, the way that toddlers demonstrate that they like other children is markedly different from what adults think of as expressions of friendship. Research at Ohio State University in Columbus found that a toddler's way of saying “I like you” during play is likely to come in the form of copying a friend's behavior.
This seemingly unusual way of demonstrating fondness can result in unpleasant behavior. Regardless of how much they like a playmate, they may still grab his or her toys, refuse to share, and get bossy. But experts say that this is a normal and necessary part of friendship for kids this age. Through play experiences, toddlers learn social rules. That's why it's so important to take an active role in your toddler's social encounters by setting limits and offering frequent reminders of what they are. When you establish these guidelines, explain the reasons behind them.
Begin by helping your child learn sympathy (“Ben is crying. What's making him so sad?”), then suggest how he or she could resolve the problem (“Maybe he would feel better if you let him play the ball.”). When your child shares or shows empathy (同理心) toward a friend, praise him or her (“Ben stopped crying! You made him feel better.”).
Another way to encourage healthy social interaction is by encouraging kids to use words—not fists—to express how they feel. It's also important to be mindful of how your child's personality affects playtime. Kids are easy to get angry when they're sleepy or hungry, so schedule playtime when they're refreshed.

(2024·盐城五校高一联考) Do you know what you'd like to be when you grow up It takes most people many years to find out. For the young artist Alexandra Nechita, it never really seemed to be a question. From the day she began drawing at the age of two, she was an artist. Alexandra Nechita was born in Romania in 1985 and moved to California when she was still a baby. As a little child, she loved colouring in her colouring books. Her parents hoped she could spend more time playing with other children, so they took away her colouring books. Alexandra began drawing her own pictures and colouring them in.
By the time Alexandra was seven years old, she had begun painting with oil paints. When Alexandra took a local art class, her teacher was amazed at the young artist's unusual style of painting. Alexandra's work was similar in some ways to the paintings by famous artists like Picasso. These artists did not use a realistic style of painting. They allowed their imaginations to play an important part in their works. The interesting thing was that little Alexandra had never seen the work of these artists. People called her “Little Picasso”. This was a great honour, but Alexandra's style of painting was all her own.
Alexandra's first public show was held at a Los Angeles public library when she was only eight years old. People were amazed at how young Alexandra was, but mostly they loved her imaginative artwork. It did not take long for Alexandra and her works to become famous. She appeared on television programmes and in newspapers and magazines all over the world. The sale of a single piece can earn the young artist thousands of dollars. But that is not why Alexandra creates artwork. She__just__cannot__imagine__doing__anything__else__that__would__bring__her__such__joy__and__satisfaction.

(2024·无锡立人高级中学高一期中) Hummingbirds (蜂鸟) are a very important part of Mexico's ecosystem, but because of the ever-spreading city landscape, they face all sorts of serious dangers. That's where 73-year-old Catia Lattouf de Arida comes in. As a self-taught hummingbird care-taker, she devotes most of her free time and resources to nursing the tiny birds back to health. Her home in Mexico City has become known as a hummingbird hospital.
Catia's story as a hummingbird nurse began in 2011, at a very difficult moment in her life. At that time, she focused on her battle with cancer and felt depressed. She was walking on the street one day when she noticed a hummingbird that had suffered a serious eye injury. The kindhearted woman took it home and named it Gucci. She managed to nurse Gucci back to health, but she said it was Gucci that saved her. Why Because the hummingbird managed to pull her out of the sadness and loneliness that had taken over her life.
Word of her success spread among Catia's friends, and before long some of them began bringing her injured hummingbirds. She didn't repulse them at all. She began to study the bird and their habits in order to better take care of them, and after more than 10 years of experience, the 73-year-old woman is considered an expert on hummingbirds.
In order to raise awareness of the difficult situation of hummingbirds in Mexico, Catia Lattouf de Arida started posting videos of the patients in her Mexico City apartment on social media, and many of them became popular. That's when the need for her nursing services really blew up. She has cared for hundreds of hummingbirds in her career, when she has had as many as 50 of them in her apartment at any one time. She spends pretty much all her time looking after the tiny birds.

(2024·浙江丽水五校高一联考) Students who are better able to understand and manage their emotions effectively, a skill known as emotional intelligence (EI), do better at school than their less-skilled classmates, according to a research published by the American Psychological Association.
“It's not enough to be smart and hardworking. Students must also be able to understand and manage their emotions to succeed at school,” said Carolyn MacCann, lead author of the study. MacCann and her colleagues analysed data from more than 160 studies, representing more than 42,000 students from 27 countries, published between 1998 and 2019. The students ranged in age from primary school to college. The researchers found that students with higher EI tended to get higher grades and better achievement test scores than those with lower EI scores. This finding held true even when controlling for intelligence and personality factors. What was most surprising to the researchers was the association held despite different ages.
As for why EI can affect academic performance, MacCann believes a number of factors may come into play. “Students with higher EI may be better able to manage negative emotions, such as anxiety, boredom and disappointment, which can negatively affect academic performance,” she said. “Also, these students may be better able to manage the social world around them, forming better relationships with teachers, classmates and family, all of which are important to academic success.” Finally, the skills required for EI, such as understanding human motivation and emotion, may overlap with (与……重叠) the skills required to master certain subjects, such as history and language, giving students an advantage in those subject areas, according to MacCann.
However, MacCann cautions against widespread testing of students to identify and target those with low EI as it may stigmatize (给……打上烙印) those students. Instead, she recommends interventions that involve the whole school, including additional teacher training and a focus on teacher well-being and emotional skills. “Programs that integrate emotional skill development into the existing curriculum would be beneficial, as research suggests that training works better when run by teachers rather than external specialists,” she said. “Increasing skills for everyone—not just those with low EI—would benefit everyone.”

(2024·江苏锡东高级中学高一期中) As my husband and I drove down a country road, we passed a fire station with a sign that read, “Are you ready for the next storm?” Our area had just been in the path of a hurricane, causing downed trees and power off. 1.________We have had our share of storms in the past—a snowstorm and other heavy snows that knocked down trees, sometimes up to a week at a time. Those days weren't fun, but we learned so much from those early storms. It made later storms easier to bear.

For Christina and her team, planting trees isn't the only goal. She hopes to employ residents, especially youth, to get their hands in the dirt and see how they can grow change.
Groundwork Bridgeport hired a team of youth and trained them to provide ongoing care for trees in the community (社区). They serve the neighborhoods where they live, monitoring the trees, providing basic care, and connecting with their neighbors. Their “patrolling” is improving each tree's longevity while giving them valuable experience and a good payment.
“We're using data and technology to be able to find even down to the specific city block of where trees are needed the most,” said Amy Lester, Ventures Project Coordinator, Arbor Day Foundation. A tech and research company helps the Arbor Day Foundation determine where trees are needed most in urban spaces by the company's nature score system. According to the nature score system, the east Bridgeport neighborhood was flagged as desperately needing trees. The most recent program that happened in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation was a tree giveaway. Fifty trees were given to residents of the neighborhood identified by the company.
Residents showed their support for the effort by coming out in full force. They know what the trees mean to their community, to their health, to the next generation of those growing up in east Bridgeport.

If we want to define grit, the correct way to put it is as a non-cognitive trait (非认知特性) based on someone's ability to insist despite many challenges and obstacles to achieve a given goal. It is the trait that tells you to keep trying at something when everyone else has given up on you. It is a measure of emotional intelligence and well-being.
New research revealed that students with grit tend to gain a higher grade point average than their less gritty classmates. They are also more likely to win in spelling contests even with a lower verbal IQ.
Grit is equally important as intelligence. One of the most famous stories in science is how Isaac Newton came up with the concept of universal gravity. An apple fell from a tree, and this sparked the genius that later revealed the secret of why things keep falling back to Earth. Such narratives are very appealing stories but discouraging. There is no hard work, just a new concept produced by a gifted man. The apple story then proved wrong. It took many, many years of labor and failures before he came up with the concept. The purpose of this article though is not to undermine intelligence. Newton was clearly a genius, but intelligence alone would not have made him reach his goals.
“Nobody is talented enough to not have to work hard, and that's what grit allows you to do,” says Angela Duckworth, the foremost researcher in the field of grit study. In her study, Duckworth isolated two qualities that seem to define gritty people. The two important qualities separated are:
·The tendency to not give up tasks from mere changeability
·The tendency to not give up tasks in the face of obstacles
To end this post, I leave you with a quote from Kahlil Gibran, “Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are burned with scars.”

I always figured that comedians were the best kind of people to hang around with as a kid. They tell funny stories, make jokes, and happiness seems never to leave them. But with time going on, we come to see these same people as clowns on the outside, but crying on the edy from these people comes from a deep pain and sadness in their lives, or out of deep-seated anger they have in the world around them.
Look at Richard Pryor. Need I say more Richard seemed to have everything. For Superman Ⅲ, he ended up getting more money than Christopher Reeve did, yet he said while he was in his forties that the last truly happy moment he remembered in his life was when he was jumping around in the dirt while he was pretending to be a cowboy at the age of 10.This guy set himself on fire, and he played that for fun while performing live at the Sunset Strip! Comedy was his constant weapon against pain, and he never held anything back.
The movie Funny People understands very well this gloomy field in which many comedians have to survive. It stars Adam Sandler as George Simmons, a famous comedian in the movie. Simmons has it all: a beautiful house overlooking the sea, a swimming pool, great cars, and so on.But in his eyes, we see that he is a sad man who has come to truly look down upon himself for what he has become. All the wealth he has collected only serves to separate him from the rest of the world and it makes him defensive when he is around total strangers who cannot see him as a normal person. But now, he hears from his doctor that he has a terminal (不治的) disease and has only months left to live. Simmons reacts to the news as if someone took away his blood in the heart, and it makes him clearly see just how much he hates his life.So now he has to make every minute count. Then comes a series of funny stories.
Comedy is just life as it is, isn't it

34.Why is George Simmons unhappy
A.He has no friends at all.
B.He spends too much on his house.
C.He isn't accepted by the outside world.
D.He is hated by all the strangers around.
C 解析:细节理解题。根据第三段中的“All the wealth...as a normal person.”可知,财富使西蒙斯和外界隔离了,他对陌生人有戒备心,陌生人也没有把他看作正常人,所以他不开心。
35.By saying “Comedy is just life as it is, isn't it?” what does the author mean
A.Life is like comedy which will make you happy.
B.Comedy comes from the sadness in real life.
C.Comedy is as happy as real life.
D.Life is full of comedy in reality.
B 解析:推理判断题。根据第一段最后一句可知,文章从一开始就说喜剧的背后是悲痛,并通过两个具体的例子来说明这一点。故作者通过文章最后这句话来总结他的观点:喜剧的背后是悲剧的升华。

This__online__concert__is__absolutely__fantastic. The performers from the two schools have done their best in entertaining the audience with one song after another. Their performances are undoubtedly of high quality, which makes the concert almost no different from a live one.
I enjoyed every second of the concert and was particularly attracted when the boys and girls from Britain started to sing the traditional Chinese song Liang Zhu. They performed the song in a way that touched my heart and gave me a feeling of connection.
I hope there will be more opportunities in the future for us Chinese students and our international friends to learn about and from each other.
第二节(满分25 分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was a child, my mother told my sister, who had a 10-inch very obvious scar (伤疤) on her arm, “Nancy, if you ignore the scar, other people will ignore it. It does not mean they will not notice it, but it means it will not matter to them if it doesn't matter to you.”
It never occurred to me that something like this would happen to my son years later. Sending a child off to college can certainly be stressful for concerned parents. It was in 2021 that my son went off to college. He rarely contacted us. I couldn't help asking about other aspects, which sometimes made him complain that I didn't treat him as an adult.
To be honest, my son is excellent. Some of my friends always tell me that they admire my son's characters and they hope their sons could have some of them.
Unexpectedly, it was 4 o'clock in the morning in 2023, when I received the phone call. “This is the emergency room calling and your son was just brought in with severe burns on his face, neck and arms. We have called for an aircraft and are going to fly him to the burn unit in Seattle.” Seattle was 350 miles from his college, so we knew immediately this was serious.
The doctor described the reason which caused the burns. At 6 a.m., my son and his friends decided to barbecue hamburgers in the courtyard of their apartment. When they lit the charcoal, it burst into flames because they had sprayed too much gasoline. The flames caught my son's shirt tail and shot from his waist to well over his head.
Fortunately, one of the boys who was quick-minded grasped my son and rolled him on the grass. While it saved his life, it was not in shape to save him from severe burns and terrible scars.
After he recovered from the treatments, the doctors told him they would not do plastic surgery for 6 months because it takes that long for the skin to stop shrinking and wrinkling.

One possible version:
The doctors suggested he return to college with scars of severe burns temporarily. Although I knew that there were going to be storms in life, it was hard for me to imagine that a handsome and sunny boy would return to his classmates with scars. I really didn't know how to comfort him. After all, the scars were on him. Not all of us could be able to turn that particular page successfully. It was at this time that I remembered what my mother said to my sister. It was those words that enabled her to overcome her psychological barriers and lead a smooth life.
So I told him about Nancy's childhood. I passed the wisdom on to my son. Realising my complex feelings, he smiled and comforted me instead. He took my advice to heart and returned to school with his head held high. By the end of the six-month waiting period, he decided that the scars did not matter. So he made the decision to give up any plastic surgery. We all have “scars” that we believe will keep people away from us. Put your imperfections out of your mind and concentrate on what you value within yourself, and your beauty will shine through.INCLUDEPICTURE "英RJBX3Unit2LLL.TIF" INCLUDEPICTURE "英RJBX3Unit2LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMAT

Jane:Oh, hey, Luke! I'm reading a very interesting magazine article about moral dilemmas.①
Luke:Moral dilemma What do you mean
Jane:You know, it's when you have two choices, and you have to choose one, but for moral reasons, sometimes it could be really difficult to decide.
Luke:Oh, situations like that don't happen very often, do they
Jane:Actually, I think people face moral dilemmas all the time, even us students.
Luke:Really Like what
Jane:Well, for example, it mentions a girl who was taking the entrance exam for a medical university in Beijing. During the exam, the student next to her fainted.② The girl had a choice. Should she finish the exam or should she stop and help the student
Luke:Surely the teachers would look after the student who fainted!
Jane:Well, that's what I thought—but not this girl. She stopped to help the student, thinking that it was better to put the needs of the other person first.
Luke:So what happened to her exam
Jane:She never finished it. Instead, she carried the student to a safe place and looked after her. Then she went to the hospital with the student and called her sister.
Luke:I can't believe she would give up her chance to get into medical university! Who would do such a thing
Jane:Well, that girl was Lin Qiaozhi. She later did get into medical university and then she became a great doctor.③ She became famous for caring for tens of thousands of women and their babies.
Luke:Oh, wow! So she became a doctor even though she left her exam that day!
Jane:Yes. Her life was full of hard choices, but she didn't let them stop her from taking care of people who were in need. She always cared for others more than for herself.④

【改编自译林必修三U4】
When I was younger, I thought science would make good things for everybody. It was obviously useful; it was good. But then during the war I worked on the atomic bomb. This result of science was obviously very serious—it represented the destruction of people and it put our future at risk. I had to ask myself, “Is there some evil involved in science?”
Put another way, what is the value of the science I had long devoted myself to—the thing I had loved—when I saw what terrible things it could do It was a question I had to answer. I thought long and hard about this question, and I will try to answer it in this talk.
The first way in which science is of value is familiar to everyone:scientific knowledge enables us to do and make all kinds of things. Of course, if we make good things, it is not only to the credit of science;it is also to the credit of the moral choice which led us to good work. Scientific knowledge is an enabling power to do either good or bad—but it does not carry instructions on how to apply it. Such power has obvious value—even though the power may be negated by what one does with it.
1.What can we infer from the first paragraph
A.The author didn't think science is of great value.
B.The author hated himself because of his work.
C.The author began to doubt the value of science.
D.The author thought atomic bomb was very useful.
2.What does the underlined word “it” refer to in paragraph 2
A.The progress of science.
B.The value of science.
C.The thing the author questioned.
D.The risk science caused.
3.What is the author's attitude towards science
A.Positive. B.Negative.
C.Objective. D.Biased.
4.What is the main idea of the passage
A.The benefits and challenges of science.
B.The importance of science knowledge.
C.The history of science development.
D.The relationship between science and morality.

A
(2024·淄博四校高一期中)Several years ago, a friend who had previously been involved in the Restless Development Sierra Leone Business Brains project encouraged me to apply for the “Saving Lives Ⅱ” project. Seeing this as an opportunity to move closer to my ambition of working in the medical field in the near future, I eagerly seized the chance. Fortunately, my performance during the interview led to me being awarded the role.
Following the basic training, I was sent to volunteer in Kurubonla, a remote community located in the northern region of Sierra Leone. This assignment presented challenges such as limited road access and communication networks. At first, I felt concerned about being sent there, but with a determined mindset, I set out on the journey, driven by a passion to contribute to my country's development and to push my personal boundaries.
As I got to know the community, I quickly realised that the challenges extended beyond language barriers and cultural differences; there was also a sense of isolation from my peers. However, I refused to allow these challenges to stop me. I threw myself into my duties, working together with local leaders and community members to identify the most pressing needs. Together, we carried out the projects aimed at improving healthcare, education, and infrastructure (基础设施). Additionally, I organised workshops and training courses to share my knowledge and skills with the locals.
Over time, I witnessed the positive impact of our collective efforts. Healthcare facilities improved, the number of students in schools increased, and the overall quality of life in the community showed signs of improvement. These achievements were not solely mine; they were a testament to the cooperative spirit and commitment of the entire community.

(2024·浙江衢温“5+1”联盟高一期中) For any astronaut hoping to survive on the surface of the moon growing crops will be essential. Now, scientists have taken “one small step” towards growing plants on the lunar surface, after showing it's possible to grow thale cress, a small flowering plant, in lunar soil.
The findings raise hopes that plants could be grown on the moon during future space missions, and even enable mankind to set up a lunar settlement. “For future, longer space missions, we may use the moon as a launching platform,” explained Professor Rob Ferl. “It makes sense that we would want to use the soil that's already there to grow plants.” Until now, scientists have not grown plants in the soil. “So, what happens when you grow plants in lunar soil What would plants do in a lunar greenhouse Could we have lunar farmers?” Professor Ferl questioned.
To answer these questions, researchers from Florida set out to plant thale cress seeds in lunar soil, add water, nutrients, and light, and see what happened. The researchers chose to use thale cress because its genetic code has already been fully mapped.
For comparison, the researchers also planted seeds in a range of soils, including those that simulate Martian soils. To their delight, the researchers found that nearly all of the seeds grew. However, they did observe differences between the plants grown in the lunar soil and those grown in the control soils. Some of the plants grown in the lunar soils were smaller, while others grew more slowly or were more varied in size.
Growing plants in lunar soils may also change the moon itself, according to Dr. Stephen Elardo. “The moon is a very, very dry place,” he said. How will minerals in the lunar soil respond to having a plant grown in them, with the added water and nutrients Will adding water make the minerals friendlier to plants The researchers hope to answer these questions in follow-up studies.

When Tom woke up, he didn't recognize① where② he was. It took him a few seconds③ to remember that he and his friends had run away. It was nice waking up outside④, among the trees and the animals. Tom could hear the birds, both far and near, talking to each other. One bird, a Blue Jay, landed on⑤ a tree branch near the boys and looked at them curiously⑥. It seemed as though this were⑦ the first time it had ever seen human beings before.
At the same time, Tom noticed how⑧ similar⑨ animals and insects were to human beings. Some were busy working, some were eating, and some were playing. This made Tom want to play, so he woke the other boys and they all ran into the river to swim and clean themselves up for the day. While⑩ they were playing, they noticed that the river had carried away their boat.
But this didn't bother any of them. They had everything they needed. They built another fire and then Tom and Huck went fishing. Joe was the cook, so he just rested until they returned with the fish. After breakfast, they all rested around the fire and it was agreed that this had been the best breakfast they'd ever eaten. Once their energy had returned, they wandered around the island for a while and then played some more in the river.
At lunch time, Joe cooked up some meat for everyone, and they sat around the fire talking for a while. They were happy all morning, but once they sat down to rest and the talking stopped, they started to feel differently.
They began to think of their homes and this made them feel a little sad and lonely . But they didn't talk about these feelings with each other for fear that they'd be laughed at . Then there suddenly came a loud noise from the direction of the village. They all jumped up and ran to the edge of the island to see what it might have been. On their way to the shore they heard the loud noise again. Through the trees they could see a riverboat full of people. It was the boat that people used to cross the river everyday. But it wasn't being used for that purpose now. It wasn't crossing the river; it was going down the river.
“Hey, I think they're looking for someone who's drowned! They're shooting that big gun to try and get the body to rise to the top of the water, just like they did last year when they found Bill Turner's body.” shouted Huckleberry.
“You're right, Huck. But I think we're the ones they believe to be drowned.” said Tom.

Suddenly, the three boys started to feel great. The village must be terribly sad. Just to see all of those people looking for them on the boat, it made them realize how important they were to their village. All of those sad feelings they'd had a few minutes ago were now forgotten. It was great being a pirate again.
When night came, the boats went back to the village and the boys went back to their fire. They all agreed that this had been a great day. It felt good to be missed. They wondered what the people of the village might be saying about them right now. They talked and laughed a lot thinking about this. But soon their laughter died down and they began to think about how this probably wasn't very funny for the people in the village, especially for their families. Then Joe looked up from the fire and said: “Maybe we should think about going back.”
“Don't be silly, Joe.” Tom said, laughing. “Yeah, don't be silly.” Huck repeated. Soon, both Joe and Huckleberry were sleeping. Tom, however, had other plans. He left a note for both of them, putting one in Joe's hat and the other in his pocket so he'd find it easily, and then he ran toward the river.Period 5 Writing

“Oh, but what good is all this beauty,” cried the peacock,“with such an unpleasant voice!”
“Listen,” said the fox,“each one owns something good: you have such beauty;the nightingale (夜莺) has her songs;and the owl (猫头鹰) has his eyes.Even if you had a sweet voice, you would still complain about another thing. Why can't you just be happy about what you have already got?”

One possible version:
The fable is about a peacock who complained about her ugly voice, ignoring her true beauty. But a fox advised that she be content with what she owns.
After reading it, I understand that we teenagers should make good use of our advantages, stopping complaining about the shortcomings all the time. Had the peacock realised this, she would not have been so upset.
Many people make the same mistake. Take my friend Mike as an example. He often complains that he can't play basketball well because he is not tall enough. He is neither aware of his own merits nor aware of how much we admire him. In fact, nobody can develop very well in all aspects even if he/she is a talent. I read the fable titled “Waiting for Gains Without Pains” again recently.
A young farmer wanted to eat good food every day, but he didn't like working. One day, while ploughing in his field, he saw a hare bump into a stump by accident and die. He had the chance to eat delicious meat of the hare. From that day on, he put down his hoe, waiting by the stump for a second hare to turn up, but no luck.
The story satirizes those who would rather complain or just wait for luck than make efforts to obtain what they need. I think we shouldn't be that kind of people. It is working hard that is the most precious.

[1]“Have you decided on your major?” my parents inquired.
[2]“Bioengineering, of course.” I responded without the slightest hesitation.
[3]I entered this world with Poland syndrome, a disease that prevented the formation of my right arm and pectoral muscles (胸肌). My parents, believing that playing with toy blocks could enhance my dexterity (灵巧), gifted me my first kit when I was five. Struggling to piece the components together, I crafted my first work—a car. As I got older, I grew obsessed with the mechanical toy blocks set, a more advanced range, and how to use it to build more delicate structures. By the age of nine, I had fashioned my first prosthetic arm (义肢) using the mechanical toy blocks set that perfectly accommodated my right arm.
[4]This early creation sparked my drive for further exploration. Years later, I developed another prosthetic arm that I called the MK-1, which had fingers, a motor, a pressure sensor, a movable elbow joint, and a grabber capable of picking things up.
[5]Before constructing it, I had already decided against traditional prosthetics. Not because they were ineffective, but because playing with toy blocks did significantly improve my dexterity, helping me adapt to my condition. However, a more frustrating reason was that prosthetics were too expensive. My parents and I had looked into getting one a few years earlier, only to be discouraged by the prohibitive price. So, I concluded that I might not need one because I was managing well without. Nevertheless, the joy of creating prosthetics with toy blocks remained. Every time my parents brought toy blocks to home, I quickly sat down, eagerly pieced the components together and enthusiastically made new prosthetics.
[6]As the years passed, my creations evolved from MK-1 to the more advanced and comfortable MK-V. It featured a control unit that could send and receive orders from sensors on the arm to the motors, with cables that contract like muscles.
[7]One day, a couple with their eight-year-old son, who lost both arms in an accident, visited my home after learning about my creations. Short of money, they couldn't afford well-functioning prosthetics. “Daniel,” the father earnestly asked, “we were wondering if you could possibly help build a set of prosthetics for our son.”

Community Restores the Robbed Bakery
Adapted from The Christian Science
Monitor Weekly 20240122
Ruben Ramirez Jr. hoped 2024 would start with a bang① for his struggling, family-owned bakery in Los Angeles. But he wasn't thinking of a bang like this—or the unexpected generosity② it would spark.
Through decades of ups and downs③, the bakery is a in the community, 48 years ago by Ruben Ramirez Sr. Three Kings Day, a traditional celebration, was coming up on Saturday. It's a big business opportunity for the bakery, and the Ramirez family was looking forward to a boost④ from orders of roscas, the circular-shaped sweet bread for the occasion.
However, in the early morning of Jan. 2, a man Ruben's bakery, and left with cash, equipment, and food—an estimated⑤ loss of more than $70,000. Whether the bakery could survive this time
Against all expectations, the bakery reopened for business on Jan. 5, just three days later, as of the power of community and a testament⑥ to rebirth and recovery after tragedy⑦.
The bakery has deep roots in the neighborhood. So, the desire to help was . A friend from high school, Luis Arandia, texted Mr. Ramirez Jr. and offered to set up a fund-raising page. Before long, the media had been contacted. Then, 1,700 people had contributed⑧ more than $85,000—which was $10,000 over the original goal.
Several customers drove from a distance to support the bakery on its first day back in business. Juanita Cervantes has been a customer for decades, and even though she moved a couple of towns away seven years ago, she still comes two to three times a week for the bread and authentic⑨ food. It took Jimmy Torres, who came with his mother and two daughters, 45 minutes to drive from his home in Long Beach. Like other customers that morning, he had learned about the tragedy on the news. The family left the bakery clutching⑩ their bags of bolillos (面包棒) and sugary churros (甜油条). “Totally worth it,” says Mr. Torres. His mother adds that they are “trying to help each other.”
At 10 a.m., business looked brisk . Workers shaped rosca dough in the back room, handed breakfast burritos (墨西哥卷饼) to eager customers for takeout, and rolled out stacked trays of bolillos. Family, friends, and employees had pitched in to clean up and repair the mess, as Mr. Ramirez describes it. The local council member's office donated paint. Now regulars and strangers were lining up at the counter , and TV news crews that showed up to chronicle the unfolding story of community unity were reporting from the store.
“I'm overwhelmed by the response,” Mr. Ramirez says. The more that people call, the bigger the smile on his face. As he recalled, when arriving at the scene of broken glass and destruction in the early hours of Jan. 2, he felt deeply angry. Then sad. But now he was overcome by the tremendous outpouring of goodwill.

Describe a volunteer activity you've attended.
One possible version:
I am glad to share the “Pay It Forward at the Nursing Home” initiative recently launched at my school. The primary goal is to instill traditional Chinese moral virtues, such as caring for the elderly and fostering a willingness to help, among our students. I participated in the activity last week. We went to the nursing home and engaged in various tasks, including cleaning up the rooms, watering trees, and putting on performances. Additionally, we shared home-made cakes and dumplings with the elderly residents. Being part of this activity and offering a helping hand filled me with pride. I firmly believe that even small acts can make a significant difference.
