Sunshine does make people happier. Imagine how cheerful you are when it clears up after long and cold rainy days. Let’s discover science behind sunlight.
Sunlight causes you to produce a chemical(化学物质) called
serotonin(血清素). When you are exposed to sunlight , your body will make more serotonin. Higher levels of serotonin will keep you in good
spirits. At night , when there is little or no light , your body will produce another chemical—melatonin(褪黑激素). It helps your body relax and will make you feel tired , which can prepare you for a good night’s sleep. You should keep a good balance between these two chemicals.
However , for many people , it is hard to balance sunlight with
darkness. People who stay indoors a lot may not get enough sunlight. The light in a house is usually about 100 times less than that outside on a sunny day. That’s why it is believed that those people should get outside in the
sunshine. They can get some exercise , enjoy the fresh air and be happy, all at the same time.
There are places where it gets dark for a long time in the winter. It is
easier for people in those places to get seasonal affective disorder(SAD). People with SAD usually go through bad experiences such as low energy and sadness. The most common treatment for those people is to sit in the bright artificial(人工的) light for some time.
The roles that sunshine plays in people’s life are more than those above. For example , your body produces vitamin D(维生素D) from sunlight,
which is important for being healthy. In fact , there is more science about
sunlight for you to discover. So next time , when you notice the sunshine on your shoulder , take a moment to think , “Why do we love sunshine? ”

My aunt, Kathy, heard a disabled friend had won a marathon race.
She felt motivated(被激励的) and decided to run. The next day, she ran

running.
Edward, my cousin, was a main role in a play for the first time. He
experienced a 2-month hard time preparing for it. Hearing people’s
applause(掌声), he felt good. What’s more, he realized he could have
more fun by trying something new.

徐悲鸿的生平
The year 2025 marks the 130th anniversary of Xu Beihong’s birth. Born
in 1895 in Jiangsu Province, Xu was one of the “fathers of modern
Chinese art”. Xu started learning Chinese painting at age 9. In 1919, he
went to Paris to study sketching and learned about Western art.

He worked hard to mix Chinese and Western art styles. In one of his
famous works, Three Horses, Xu put together traditional Chinese
colouring skills with Western realism to paint three strong horses standing
under a big tree. While Xu was best known for painting horses, he also
painted other animals, people and important historical scenes. Many of his
animal paintings have deeper meanings. In Meeting of Forces in Tokyo,
painted in 1943, the artist showed a group of lions that stand for China and
other countries fighting against fascism. In the background, a rising red sun
shows Xu’s strong belief in winning the World Anti-Fascist War.

Besides being a painter, Xu was also an art educator. He wanted his
students to be creative and love beauty. During his time as director of the
National Central University Art Department, he set up many new courses
such as sketching, oil painting and art theory. Xu not only improved
Chinese painting but also helped build the modern Chinese art education
system.

Sunshine does make people happier. Imagine how cheerful you are
when it clears up after long and cold rainy days. Let’s discover science
behind sunlight.
一

Sunlight causes you to produce a chemical(化学物质) called
serotonin(血清素). When you are exposed to sunlight, your body will
make more serotonin. Higher levels of serotonin will keep you in good
spirits. At night, when there is little or no light, your body will produce
another chemical—melatonin(褪黑激素). It helps your body relax and
will make you feel tired, which can prepare you for a good night’s sleep.
You should keep a good balance between these two chemicals.

However, for many people, it is hard to balance sunlight with
darkness. People who stay indoors a lot may not get enough sunlight. The
light in a house is usually about 100 times less than that outside on a sunny
day. That’s why it is believed that those people should get outside in the
sunshine. They can get some exercise, enjoy the fresh air and be happy,
all at the same time.

There are places where it gets dark for a long time in the winter. It is
easier for people in those places to get seasonal affective disorder(SAD).
People with SAD usually go through bad experiences such as low energy and
sadness. The most common treatment for those people is to sit in the bright
artificial(人工的) light for some time.
一

五
The roles that sunshine plays in people’s life are more than those above.
For example, your body produces vitamin D(维生素D) from sunlight,
which is important for being healthy. In fact, there is more science about
sunlight for you to discover. So next time, when you notice the sunshine on
your shoulder, take a moment to think, “Why do we love sunshine?”
