What is Jingzhe (惊蛰)
Timing & Meaning
Jingzhe (惊蛰), or "Awakening of Insects," is the third of China's 24 solar terms .
It usually falls around March 5-6 each year when the sun reaches 345° of the ecliptic longitude.
The Legend
The name comes from an ancient belief: spring thunder awakens hibernating insects from their winter sleep.
"Jing" (惊) means to startle, and "Zhe" (蛰) means hibernating insects.
Traditional Customs
Eating Pears: People eat pears to moisten lungs and stay healthy. The word "pear" (梨) sounds like "leaving" (离), symbolizing staying away from pests and diseases.
