Hundreds of millions of birds die every year from crashing into windows, one of the biggest sources of human-caused bird deaths — far greater than wind turbines (风力涡轮机) and airplane strikes combined. In a bid to help birds see the panes (窗玻璃) before it’s too late, people may stick decals or tinted films on their windows — often on the indoor side. But a recent study in PeerJ Life & Environment shows that such films work only on a window’s outside surface.
“Putting these window films on the inside really is not giving you the benefit that you would want for protecting the birds,” says John P. Swaddle, a biologist at the College of William and Mary and lead author of the new study.
To test the films’ effectiveness, Swaddle and his co-workers applied one of two commercially available films to either inner or outer window surfaces. One film reflected shorter light wavelengths that humans cannot see, and the other reflected longer wavelengths (many birds can see both). Both films helped to prevent bird strikes by more than 35 percent when put on the outside surface, the study found — but films on the inside had no benefit at all.
“It’s some groundbreaking work about the small differences between what can and can’t work in terms of preventing window strikes from birds,” says George Mason University biologist David Luther, who studies the evolution of birds in cities and was not involved in the study.
People usually find it much easier to put films or decals on the inside of a window, says Natalia Ocampo-Pe uela, a conservation ecologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who was also not involved in the study. “For taller buildings, to apply something to the outside, you need scaffolding (脚手架)… you need to clean the windows extra well for them to apply correctly, and they don’t last as long.”
8.Why are bird deaths caused by wind turbines and airplane strikes mentioned
A.To stress the problem of birds crashing into the windows.
B.To introduce the importance of bird strikes into the windows.
C.To remind people to raise their awareness of protecting the birds.
D.To provide some background knowledge for the text.
9.What determines the effect of the experiment result
A.The materials of the film.
B.The wavelengths of the films.
C.The quality of the films available.
D.The side of the window to apply the film to.
10.What did the researchers do to know how well the film worked
A.They applied scaffolding in front of the windows.
B.They put the film on the inside to get desired benefit.
C.They compared the effects of the film on different sides.
D.They used both shorter and longer light wavelengths.
11.What is the text intended to do
A.To inspire readers to do researches on birds.
B.To call on the bird lovers to protect the birds.
C.To teach readers to apply the tinted film to the windows.
D.To explain how tinted films work in preventing bird deaths.

Jason M. Allen was almost too nervous to enter his first art competition. Now, his award-winning image is stirring debates about whether art can be generated by a computer, and what, exactly, it means to be an artist.
In August 2022, Allen, a 39-year-old game designer who lives in Pueblo West, Colorado, won first place in the “digital arts/digitally-operated photography” category at the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition. His winning image, titled Théatre D’opéra Spatial, was made with Midjourney—an artificial intelligence system that can produce detailed images when fed written prompts (提示).
Allen’s winning image looks like a bright cross between a classic and modern painting. It’s one of three such images he entered in the competition. Allen posted excitedly about his win on Midjourney’s Discord server on August 25, along with pictures of his three entries; it spread quickly on Twitter days later, with many artists feeling angry about Allen’s win because of his use of AI to create the image. “He just ‘pressed a few buttons to make a digital art piece’,” one Twitter user wrote. “We’re watching the death of art unfold before our eyes.”
However, to get the final three images he entered in the competition, Allen said, he took over 80 hours. First, he played around with phrasing that led Midjourney to generate images of women in nice dresses and space helmets. Over time, with slight adjustments to his written prompts, he created 900 repeating processes of what led to his final three images. He gave the final touch to those three images in Photoshop. Then he ran the images through another software program called Gigapixel AI that can improve resolution (分辨率) and had the images printed at a local print shop.
Allen is glad that the debate over whether AI can be used to make art is getting so much attention. “Rather than hating the technology or the people behind it, we need to recognize it’s a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all move forward,” Allen said.
12.What do we know about Theatre D’opera Spatial
A.Its beauty is widely accepted. B.Its creation is an easy process.
C.It shows the death of traditional art. D.It has caused a lot of arguments.
13.What did Allen do to create his entries
A.He searched for smart written prompts. B.He edited his final images in Photoshop.
C.He fed Midjourney with famous paintings. D.He developed the software named Gigapixel.
14.What is Allen’s attitude to the debate over Al-created art
A.Worried. B.Uncaring. C.Positive. D.Annoyed.
15.What might be the best title for the text
A.AI Beats Out Human Artists in the Art Field
B. AI Won an Art Contest and Artists Are Angry
C.An Artist Wins State Fair Art Contest and Laughs
D.The Artist From Pueblo West Is Defending His Work.

Jack was a high school freshman, tall and thin, with a heart full of dreams. Jack’s father was a repairman who spent his days fixing cars, so his hands were always dirty. Jack’s father never said much, but his eyes always seemed to say, “I’m proud of you, son.” And Jack felt it in every nod. Their relationship was a quiet one, with an unspoken bond (纽带).
One day, Jack came home from school with a flyer (传单) in his hand. His eyes were bright with excitement as he showed it to his father. “Dad, there’s a school talent show next month, and I want to enter. I’ve been learning guitar for months,” Jack said to his father.
His father looked up from the engine he was working on. “You play the guitar ” he asked in surprise. Feeling a little embarrassed, Jack nodded, saying, “Yeah, I’ve been taking lessons. I think I’m ready.” His father cleaned his hands with a piece of cloth, looked at Jack and smiled, “I’ll be there, son. I wouldn’t miss it.” Through his father’s eyes, Jack knew he had his father’s support.
The days leading up to the talent show were more practice and anxiety for Jack. He would come home after school and lock himself in his room, the sound of his guitar echoing (回响) through the house. His father didn’t speak too much, but he would prepare delicious food and smiled at Jack whenever he saw his son. He would also quietly listen to the music from the living room. Although Jack felt tired or nervous sometimes, he felt pushed forward by unspoken love.
The day of the talent show arrived, and the school hall was filled with excitement. Jack’s hands were shaking as he prepared his guitar backstage. He looked out into the audience and found his father with a broad smile on his face.

I’m confident that I am a right person for this activity. Firstly. I am fluent in English, which plays an important role in communicating with foreigners. Secondly, I have learned shadow plays for eight years and am capable of performing them well. What’s more, I’m outgoing and can get on well with others.
I would appreciate it if you could give me this chance.
Yours sincerely,

47.As Jack stepped onto the stage, the lights dimmed (变暗) and the audience quieted down. Jack took a deep breath, trying to calm his nerves. He looked out at the sea of faces, his eyes landing on his father. With a final adjustment of his guitar, he began to play. His fingers danced across the strings, and the music filled the hall. At first, there was a slight tremble in his playing, but as he got lost in the melody, his confidence grew. The audience sat spellbound, and by the end of the performance, the hall erupted into thunderous applause. Jack felt a huge sense of relief and pride wash over him.
“I didn’t know you could play like that,” his father said. “You were great.” A big smile spread across Jack’s face. “Thanks, Dad. I couldn’t have done it without your support.” His father put his arm around Jack’s shoulders. “I always knew you had it in you, son. I’m so proud of you.” Jack realized that his father’s quiet presence and unspoken love had been the driving force behind his success. From that day on, their unspoken bond grew even stronger, and Jack knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, his father would always be there, silently cheering him on.
