Dr. R. Ravi Kannan never planned to become a surgeon, much less leave Chennai for Silchar, a small town in
Assam. Yet life had other plans, leading him to where he was needed most.
His journey into medicine was inspired by his mother, who viewed village doctors not just as doctors but as
core figures of the community. Though a specialization in surgery was an afterthought, he was certain about
pursuing medicine. After training in top institutions, he met Dr. Chinmoy Choudhury, who introduced him to
Cachar Cancer Hospital (CCHRC), one of only two cancer centers in Assam, a state burdened by high cancer rates.
A visit to Silchar in 2007 changed everything. The lack of accessible care was staggering—patients traveled
300 km to Guwahati for treatment, many dying before they could afford the journey. Moved by the need, his wife
Seetha urged, “Let’s move here. This is what we should be doing.”
The challenges were huge. The hospital lacked basic infrastructure (基础设施)—surgeries were conducted
under daylight due to power cuts, and equipment was insufficient. But the bigger challenge was patients’ awareness
of treatment. Data revealed 60% didn’t return for treatment, fearing lost wages. Kannan realized medicine alone
wasn’t enough.
So CCHRC took measures. Free treatment and even wages for caregivers were introduced. Satellite clinics and
home-care programs bridged gaps in access. Today, 70% of patients complete treatment—a proof of Kannan’s
belief that healthcare must adapt to people’s lives, not the other way around.
第 4页/共 17页
Beyond treatment, he focused on prevention, training community workers to detect cancer early. His
philosophy is simple: No patient should suffer for lack of resources, die in pain, or be driven to poverty by
treatment. Honored with the Padma Shri Award, Kannan remains grounded. “Awards bring attention, but the real
challenge is inspiring others to engage in this mission, which remains tougher,” he reflects.
4. What led Kannan to pursue a medical career
A. His early ambition. B. The patient’s needs.
C. His mother’s impact. D. His love for his hometown.
5. What is the probable meaning of the underlined word “staggering” in paragraph 3
A. Shocking. B. Mixed. C. Similar. D. Embarrassing.
6. What was the main reason for many patients’ discontinued treatment
A. Fear of medical procedures. B. Inconvenient transportation.
C. Concern over income loss. D. Limited hospital facilities.
7. What does Kannan think is more difficult to achieve
A Treating more patients. B. Focusing on prevention.
C. Staying calm in the face of awards. D. Getting more involved.

While kangaroos are a very social species, there has until recently been no evidence that they form long-term
relationships between individuals. But a new study by researchers from UNSW Sydney indicates that this may
simply be a gap in our knowledge due to the difficulties in studying large herd animals like kangaroos over time.
Eastern grey kangaroos have a social structure called fission-fusion, where they form small groups that split
(解散) and reform multiple times a day. The UNSW researchers were able to analyze more than 3000 images of a
single group of eastern grey kangaroos taken over a period of six years. Using ear-shape and Contour software to
identify individuals, they found evidence of long-term relationships, including females with young kangaroos that
had actively formed connections with other mothers, counter to suggestions from previous studies.
“We used a metric (衡 量 标 准 ) that measured the number of associations an individual has with another
individual, and also the strength of these associations,” says Ms Nora Campbell, a PhD candidate from the School
of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences (BEES). “First we made a social network chart for each year of the
survey, which showed the connections that each kangaroo had each year, and then using that same metric, we
calculated a social score for each kangaroo based on the social network graphs.”
第 5页/共 17页
The team ended up focusing their observations on female-female relationships. The researchers suggest that
the mothers may form close relationships to potentially reduce the risk of being killed, disturbance from males, or
aggression (攻击) towards their young. Understanding this behavior could be important in assessing how kangaroo
management may affect a group.
“It’s important to understand the ways in which kangaroos relate to each other for management of kangaroo
populations, because that’s going to then affect the reproductive rate of the population and how widespread the
groups are going to be,” says Ms Campbell. “Kangaroos have adapted extremely well to urban environments,
causing their numbers to rise to truly alarming and unsustainable levels in certain areas. We are deeply troubled that
this puts a lot of pressure on the environment while also negatively impacting the kangaroos themselves, especially
during times of drought.”
8. What is studied about kangaroos
A. The relationship among individuals. B. The living habits of the females.
C. Their ever-changing groups. D. Their complex social structures.
9. What does Nora Campbell tell us about her research in paragraph 3
A. Its findings. B. Its process. C. Its significance. D. Its varieties.
10. What is the ultimate purpose of the research on kangaroos
A. Higher reproduction rates. B. Stronger protection measures.
C. Better management strategies. D. Deeper understanding of kangaroo society.
11. What is Campbell’s attitude toward the rise of kangaroos in cities
A. Objective. B. Approving. C. Indifferent. D. Concerned.

Cosmic (宇宙的) radiation represents one of the most appealing yet least visible phenomena in our universe.
These high-energy particles (粒子), traveling at nearly light speed, originate from violent cosmic events such as
cosmic explosions and intense solar activities. According to astrophysicist Dimitra Atri, Earth constantly receives
these invisible particles from all directions, creating an ongoing cosmic shower that goes through our atmosphere.
Earth has developed remarkable natural defenses against this cosmic attack. Our atmosphere absorbs the
majority of incoming particles, while the planet’s magnetic field (磁场) blocks most harmful radiation. Together,
these protective systems maintain surface radiation at safe levels. However, this protection weakens with increasing
altitude (海拔). Residents of high-altitude cities experience nearly double the radiation exposure of those at sea
level.
第 6页/共 17页
The effects of cosmic radiation become particularly noticeable during air travel. While a single cross-country
flight exposes passengers to radiation equal to just one chest X-ray — posing minimal health risk — airline
crews, due to their regular high-altitude exposure, face significantly higher risks. Research indicates that flight
attendants and pilots typically receive more annual radiation than workers in nuclear facilities, potentially
increasing their long-term cancer risks.
In space, beyond Earth’s protective systems, cosmic radiation presents even greater challenges. The Apollo
missions provided concrete evidence of this threat. Long-term space exposure can cause damage to cells, increasing
risks of cancer, cataracts, and neurological disorders — a major concern for future Mars missions and
long-duration space travel.
Scientists employ various methods to study cosmic radiation. While these high-energy particles won’t give
humans superpowers as sometimes described in fiction, understanding their behavior is crucial for developing
better protection technologies. Current research focuses on protective materials and monitoring systems to
safeguard astronauts and frequent flyers.
For most individuals on Earth, cosmic radiation poses minimal health risks thanks to our planet’s natural
defenses. However, as we venture more frequently into high-altitude travel and space exploration, continued
research into cosmic radiation’s effects remains essential for protecting human health in these environments.
12. What can we know about Earth’s natural defenses
A. They make life safe at any altitude. B. Their main function is to control the climate.
C. Human activities are now their biggest challenge. D. They work in different ways to stop cosmic threats.
13. Why were Apollo missions mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To show the risks of space travel. B. To prove the existence of radiation.
C. To compare different air travels. D. To disprove scientific theories.
14. What can be inferred about the future of cosmic radiation research
A. It will shift its focus from health to energy. B. It will continue to rely on past mission data.
C. It has largely resolved the major health concerns. D. It is likely to gain growing attention and support.
15. What can be the best title for this text
A. Flight Attendant: A High-Risk Occupation B. Cosmic Radiation: Risks and Protections
C. High-Altitude Travel: A Health Concern D. Space Exploration: Challenges and Opportunities

What is the definition of aging
For much of human history, a person’s ability to complete tasks or contribute to their family and community
shaped the idea of old age.
____16____ While the official retirement age will hit 67 beginning in 2026, the average American retires at
62, which is around the time most governments consider a person old. The range of 60 to 65 has remained
relatively consistent over time, even as life expectancy extended and humans experienced major social and
economic changes.
____17____ Most older people will spend a significant part of their lives affected by these age-related
diseases and other health problems. By some estimates, nearly 95 percent of U.S. adults over 60 have at least one
disease, while nearly 80 percent have two or more.
Yet age may not be a good indicator for defining old age. ____18____ This timing is shaped by individual’s
personal sense of aging. And it’s true that no one wants to be old. Ageism leads to social loneliness, poor health,
and even earlier death. Becca Levy, a professor of age and psychology at Yale University, has spent much of her
career studying the downstream effects of age beliefs. ____19____
Research shows that negative beliefs about aging can harm physical and mental health, while positive beliefs
improve health. One study estimates that ageism costs the U.S. $63 billion annually. ____20____ Western cultures
tend to value youth, while Eastern cultures, like China and Korea, often associate aging with wisdom and view it as
a virtue.
A. Getting older is often described as a problem to fix.
B. Rather, individuals might enter old age at different times.
C. She details those effects in her book Breaking the Age Code.
D. Besides, cultural differences influence attitudes toward aging.
E. Overall, aging is the strongest risk for cancer or Alzheimer’s.
F. She explains in her book aging is not something that happens gradually.
G. Traditionally, retirement marked the shift in people’s focus from ability to age.

Michael Cabeldu was driving along the dark highway outside Victoria. It was a clear November night, the
stars shining brightly overhead. But as he rounded a sharp bend, thick fog swallowed the road. Before he could
react, his car ran off the road. The vehicle crashed toward a cliff (悬崖) overlooking the ocean.
With a loud crash, the car hit a tree and tipped sideways. Michael, not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown against
the window. Pain shot through his body — his nose was broken, his face bloody. Worse, his bones were broken in
several places.
For hours, Michael couldn’t move in the broken car. When dawn came, he assessed his situation: he was stuck
deep in the woods, invisible from the road above. His phone was useless. No one knew where he was.
Gathering all his strength, he began the painful process of moving. Inch by inch, he dragged himself from the
passenger side to the driver’s seat, where he could rest. Outside, rain poured mercilessly. Days passed. Michael
survived on his few supplies — a lamb dinner, chocolate bars, and a bottle of water. He tried lighting a fire for
rescue signals, but the rain ruined every attempt.
By the fourth day, hope was fading. Then, magically, he heard voices. Two university students, Ethan and Will,
had spotted the car during a biking trip. “It’s probably just abandoned,” Ethan said. But something about the
vehicle’s position — tilted (倾 斜 的 ) at an odd angle — made Will uneasy. “Let’s take a closer look,” he
suggested.
The hillside was overgrown with bushes that tore at their clothes as they picked their way down. “Hello Is
anyone there ” About thirty feet from the car, they heard it — a weak but unmistakable cry for help. They
climbed down and forced open the driver’s door, finding Michael shaking and weak.

The students called 911 immediately. They clearly told the rescuers their exact location and Michael’s critical
condition, begging for quick help. Meanwhile, Ethan stayed with Michael to keep him awake, talking gently to ease
his fear, while Will went back to the road to guide the rescuers. They covered Michael with their jackets to keep
him warm and gave him small sips of water to prevent dehydration. They kept encouraging him, assuring him that
help was on the way, which gave Michael the strength to hold on.
Then Michael was airlifted to the hospital. Doctors gave him timely treatment for his broken bones and
injuries, and after weeks of careful care, he gradually recovered. When he saw Ethan and Will again, he thanked
them sincerely, saying their kindness had saved his life. The two students smiled and said it was just what anyone
would do. Michael learned a precious lesson: a small act of kindness can make a great difference in a life-or-death
situation.
