Van Gogh is one of the most famous artists in the world. Here are four of his best paintings.
The Potato Eaters
The Potato Eaters was Van Gogh's first major work and, despite a distinct lack of colour, it was
one that he was most proud of. His aim was to represent the difficulties of country life,so the farmers
are painted in earthy tones with rough faces and bony hands. He was more concerned with conveying
his message than achieving technical perfection in this painting.
Irises
Van Gogh finished almost 142 pieces during his stay in the Saint Remy de Provence asylum(精
神病院),where he was a voluntary patient from 1889 to 1890. This piece was started shortly after he
arrived there. The hospital garden provided much inspiration for the artist during his stay there.
Originally, the flowers in this work were painted purple but the red pigment(色素)faded over time
and has now turned blue.
Cafe Terrace at Night
Despite being painted more than 130 years ago, this cafe still exists in France and has since been
renamed the Cafe Van Gogh. This artwork marks the first time Van Gogh's famous
post-impressionistic star-filled sky was seen in a piece, and it was painted on the ground,in
person, rather than from memory. While the artwork doesn't bear his signature, it's widely known to
be Van Gogh's,as he mentioned in a number of his letters.
Wheat Field with Cypresses
This piece was inspired by the view from Van Gogh's asylum window and wasfinished on the
spot. The work was the title of three paintings that offer an insight into his stay at the hospital. Van
Gogh was pleased with the summer landscape that he made three copies there, one of the same
size-which hangs in the National Gallery, and two smaller copies which he planned to gift to
his mother and sister.

John von Neumann was the oldest of 3 children of a banker, and his speed of learning new ideas
and of solving problems stood out early. At 17, his father tried to persuade him not to become a
mathematician because he may lead a poor life being a mathematician, and so von Neumann agreed
to study chemistry as well. In 1926, at 23, he received a degree in chemical engineering and a Ph. D
in mathematics. From then on, mathematics provided well enough for him,and he never had to turn
to chemistry.
In 1930, von Neumann visited Princeton University for a year and then became a professor
there. His first book was published in1932.In 1933,the Institute for Advanced Study was formed, and
he became one of the 6 full- time people in the School of Mathematics(Einstein was one of the
others).
World War II hugely changed von Neumann's areas of interest. Until 1940 he had been a great
pure(纯粹的)mathematician. During and after the war,he became one of the best mathematicians
who put mathematics theories into practice. During the last part of the war, he became interested in
computing machines and made several fundamental contributions. After the war von Neumann
continued his work with computers, and was generally very active in government service. He
received many awards, was president of the American Mathematical Society and was a member of
the Atomic Energy Commission. He died in 1957 of cancer.
Von Neumann made several great contributions and any one of them would have been enough
to earn him a firm place in history. He will be remembered as one of the greatest minds of the 20th

century.
Von Neumann really was a legend(传奇人物)in his own time, and there are a number of stories
about him. His driving ability is a part of this legend. He reported one accident this way:"I was
driving down the road. The trees on the right were passing me in an orderly fashion at 60 miles per
hour. Suddenly one of them stepped in my path."
24.According to the text, von Neumann's father believed that
A. a mathematician couldn't earn a lot of money
B. a mathematician needed a good memory
C. von Neumann had the ability to learn two subjects at the same time
D. von Neumann had a gift for solving problems at a high speed
25. Von Neumann published his first book at the age of.
A.23 B.26 C.29 D.32
26. How did World War II affect John von Neumann
A. He realized the importance of engineering.
B.He began to research how to put mathematics into practice.
C. He left college and served at the government department.
D. He lost interest in chemistry.

Plastic mobile phones cases and sweet wrappers, some more than 50 years old, have recently
been pulled from the sea off the coast of East Yorkshire. The finds lead to growing concern among
scientists about the long-term impact of plastic waste on our seas, with research suggesting it takes
over400 years for a drinks bottle to break down in the sea.
Notpla, a London-based start-up company, is currently designing a seaweed- based
replacement for single-use plastic packaging. Founded in 2014, the company has been sparing no
effort to further develop its product line.
The firm initially looked to seaweed as the solution to the world's white pollution, because it is
plentiful, grows quickly, doesn't compete with land crops and doesn't use chemicals, but absorbs
carbon from the air. Design director Karlijn Sibbel says,"It can grow into the sea, where it actually
第 5页/共 12页
has many positive benefits so it can create new ecosystems for other organisms to grow in."
Sibbel says they look to nature as inspiration "for the ideal packaging" like the skin on a fruit."A
peel(果皮)will eventually be used as nutrients by nature, disappear and become part of the cycle."
"The exciting thing is that this is a film that can replace most of the flexible packaging you see
around," Sibbel says. The potential contents could include coffee grounds or toilet paper. For food
items, such as noodles, they have even experimented with adding flavours to the packaging,so that
dissolving the bag could add seasoning to the food."You can cook with it. And you can really start to
rethink what we can do with these materials," she explains.
The approach feels especially relevant as the world is coming to terms with the effects of
decades of uncontrolled plastic production. Co-CEO Paslier says,"We're excited to see our power in
the food service industry and looking forward to moving into the fashion markets very soon."
28. What problem is mainly referred to in Paragraph 1
A.Energy crisis. B. Food waste. C.Ecological disaster. D. White pollution.
29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. How seaweed grows in the sea.
B. How seaweed absorbs carbon from the air
C. Why seaweed can create more ecosystems.
D. Why seaweed was chosen as a plastic alternative.
30. What is the ideal packaging according Sibbel
A. It can be digested by nature. B. It's as thin as a peel.
C. It can transform into chemicals. D. It bears a flavour enhancer.
31.Which word can best describe the prospec of Notpla
A. Doubtful. B. Uncertain. C.Promising. D. Darkening.

In a global report of lake colour, researchers estimate that roughly one-third of Earth's lakes are
blue. But, should average summer air temperatures rise by a few degrees, some of those clear waters
could turn a cloudy green or brown.
The changing colours could change how people use those waters and offer clues about the
stability of lake pared with blue lakes, green or brown lakes have more algae (藻类)
第 6页/共 12页
and organic matter, says Xiao Yang,a hydrologist(水文专家)at Southern Methodist University.
Lakes in places with average summer air temperatures that were below 19C were more likely to
be blue than lakes with warmer summers. That's because warmer water helps algae bloom more,
which changes the properties of the water.
Yang and his colleagues used satellite photos from 2013 to 2020 to analyse the colour of more
than 85,000 lakes around the world. Because storms and seasons can temporarily affect a lake's
colour, the researchers focused on the most frequent colour observed for each lake over the seven-
year period. The researchers also created an interactive online map that can be used to explore the
colours of these lakes. The approach is "super cool",the researchers say. These satellite data are "just
so powerful".
If some lakes do become less blue, people will probably lose some of the resources they have
come to value,O'Reilly sys, who is an ecologist at Illinois State University. Lakes are often used for
drinking water, food or recreation. If the water has more algae, it could be unappealing for play or
more costly to clean for drinking. But the colour changes wouldn't necessarily mean that the lakes
are any less healthy."Humans don't value lots of algae in a lake, but if you're a certain type of fish
species, you might be like 'this is great'." O'Reilly says.
32. What can we learn about the lakes' colour change according to the text
A. It is caused by water pollution.
B. It does harm to the growth of algae.
C. It results from the temperature increase.
D. It can disturb the stability of lake ecosystems.
33.How was the research conducted
A. By doing field investigation.
B. By researching previous studies.
C.By analysing long-term satellite data.
D. By observing the daily colour of the lakes.
34. Which word best describes O'Reilly's attitude to the colour change
A.Objective. B. Doubtful. C.Unconcerned. D.Favourable.
35. What's the author's purpose of writing the text
A. To call on people to protect lakes.
第 7页/共 12页
B. To introduce a new research method.
C. To present the outcome of a research.
D. To provide solutions to lakes' color change.

When I was a little girl, I knew that I had a gift for music. Playing was my love. While most
kids were outside in the burning summer sun, playing childish games, I was happy to sit in the cool
indoors for hours practicing my beloved piano. When I played, I felt like I was in a whole new world
where I was free and easy. All I had to worry about was my music. Playing was never boring for me.
I had spent months practicing and the big day finally came. It was the day of the Alberta Music
Competition. The music hall was packed with excited audience. I sat in the first row with my mother
seated beside me. As the fellow competitors were playing, I couldn't keep my mind on their music. I
was just memorizing the notes and practicing the fingerings. I had known my music was like the
back of my hand. But this time, to my great surprise, I found my fingers completely out of my
control. They kept shaking. I nearly burst into tears. Seeing this, mum held my hands tightly in hers.
She even breathed into them as if she wanted to warm them up. Then she whispered to my
ear,"Sweetie, take it easy. Just listen and enjoy the music."
I looked up and turned my attention to the competitor in the center of the stage for.
the first time. A thin and tall boy was sitting at the beautiful red piano. He looked calm and
confident. His fingertips danced on the keyboard. The soft and gentle sound of the piano flew in the
air. For a moment, I totally forgot my nervousness.
