Scott Behringer, George Gilbert and Tim Korber first met on vacation many years ago. In
1994, they took a beach photo in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. In the picture, the three men stood side by side with their arms crossed and their baseball caps turned backward. They wore bright swim
shorts and looked relaxed and happy. They later called it their “iconic photo”.
Their friendship began in 1986. Tim and his wife Patty met Scott and his wife Cheree in
Cancun, Mexico. They quickly became close friends and kept traveling together. Later, on a flight,

they met another couple, George and Debbie. By chance, all three couples were from California. Soon, the six of them became close friends. They supported each other in daily life and shared
many trips around the world.

Hawaii and even South Africa. They celebrated weddings, birthdays and other important moments together. Their children grew up together, and now they are proud grandparents. They often say
they are more than friends — they are like family.
The 1994 beach photo became a symbol of their strong friendship. During later trips, the three men often copied the same pose for fun.
In 2024, they had a special chance to recreate the photo. George and Debbie’s son was
getting married in Cabo, the same place where the original picture was taken. The three men
brought clothes like those they wore in the 1990s and returned to the same beach. Although the background had changed because of a hurricane, they stood in the same spot and struck the same pose.

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday with more than two thousand years of history. It occurs on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. While there are several origin stories, the festival is most strongly associated with the legend of
Qu Yuan, a poet and loyal official who lived in the state of Chu during the Warring States Period.
Qu Yuan was a wise and well-respected advisor. However, other jealous officials spread
false information about him. The king no longer trusted him and sent him away from the court.
During this time, Qu Yuan wrote some of China’s greatest poetry, expressing his deep love for his country and his sorrow over its corruption (腐败). When the Qin army captured the Chu capital in 278 BCE, Qu Yuan felt hopeless and drowned himself in the Miluo River. This was his final act of loyalty and protest.
It is said that the local people were very sad when they heard about his death. They raced out in their fishing boats to try to save him, beating drums and splashing the water with their
paddles to scare away bad spirits and prevent fish from eating his body. This is said to be the origin of dragon boat racing.
People also threw rice into the river to feed the fish, hoping to keep them away from Qu
Yuan’s body. An old doctor even poured realgar wine into the water to poison any dangerous
creatures. Later, the rice developed into zongzi — sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo
leaves. Today, eating zongzi and racing dragon boats are the main traditions ofthe festival. These customs help us remember the story and spirit of Qu Yuan.
28 .Why was Qu Yuan sent away from the court

Scientists in Australia have found strong evidence that long-term insomnia (失眠) may be caused by problems in the brain’s natural 24-hour rhythm (节奏). This rhythm controls how active our minds are during the day and night. The discovery helps explain why some people cannot
“switch off” at night, even when their bodies feel tired.
In a study published in Sleep Medicine, researchers from the University of South Australia studied how thinking changes over a whole day. They compared 16 older adults with insomnia to 16 healthy sleepers. This was the first time scientists carefully recorded daily changes in mental activity in this way.
Insomnia affects about 10% of people and is even more common among older adults. Many patients say their minds feel too active at night. Doctors often call this “mental overactivity”, but the exact reason has not been clear.
To find answers, the researchers carried out a 24-hour lab experiment. All 32 volunteers stayed awake in bed under soft light. Food, movement, and outside time signals were strictly
试卷第 8 页,共 14 页
controlled. This allowed scientists to study specifically the brain’s natural rhythm.
Every hour, the participants described their thoughts, including how clear, emotional, or controllable they were. Results showed that both groups had natural daily patterns: thinking was strongest in the afternoon and weakest in the early morning.
However, people with insomnia showed important differences. Unlike healthy sleepers,
their thinking did not slow down strongly at night. Their thought patterns stayed more
daytime-like in the nighttime hours when the brain should be quietening. Their cognitive (认知的) peaks were also deferred by around six and a half hours, suggesting that their internal (内在的)
clocks may encourage attentive thinking well into the night.
The researchers say that current treatments only focus on behavioral strategies, but these findings suggest that tailored approaches addressing circadian and cognitive factors could offer a solution.
32 .What was the purpose of the lab experiment
A .To explore the harms of insomnia in the elderly.
B .To study people’s internal daily brain rhythm.
C .To track emotional changes over time.
D .To measure light effects on sleep.
33 .What were the participants required to do every hour
A .Rate light levels. B .Measure brain waves.
C .Record sleep length. D .Report their ideas.
34 .What does the underlined word “deferred” in paragraph 6 mean
A .Examined. B .Given up.
C .Put off. D .Removed.
35 .What do the researchers expect of the findings
A .They will play a role in treating insomnia.
B .They will be applied to new medical fields.
C .They will help patients improve their lives.
D .They will bring about the change of traditional medicine.

When I was in the eighth grade, my class was assigned to be friends with second-grade
kids. I got paired with Shelley, a small, quiet girl who never joined her classmates’ games. She
would sit alone in the corner, staring out the window, and didn’t respond to any of my attempts to connect — whether I offered her colorful crayons, sweet candies, or a brand-new coloring book. Even when I sat beside her and talked about my favorite cartoons or funny school stories, she
would just look down at her shoes, her shoulders hunched like she was trying to disappear. Days passed, but there was still no sign of change in her. I began to worry that I might never be able to get close to this lonely little girl.
One Friday, I sat down beside her and shared my own childhood story: how I’d felt lonely in elementary school, how I’d hidden my tears so no one would see my pain, and how a teacher’s kind word had finally helped me open up. I told her that I knew what it was like to feel like no one understood, and that she didn’t have to be alone anymore. When I finished, Shelley’s eyes were
shining with tears. For the first time, she looked me in the eye and spoke to me, whispering, “Thank you.”

The next week, our school planned a “Buddy Talent Show” for the paired students. I knew this could be a turning point for Shelley, so I gently suggested she perform. She hesitated at first, her fingers holding the hem of her dress, but after I told her I’d be right there with her, playing the piano to accompany her, she nodded slowly. I could see a flicker of hope in her eyes, and I knew we were about to take a big step together.

walked on to the stage. As I sat down and played the gentle tune ,she began to sing softly. At first her voice was weak , but en oo urged by my smile , she sang more and more confidently. The whole hall fell silent , listening carefully to her pure and touching voice.
When the song ended , warm claps and cheers erupted from the ad ience. Shelley’s face lit up with a bright smile the first real smile I had ever seen from her. She ran to me and hugged me
tightly , tears of joy streaming down her cheeks. From that day on , Shelley changed completely. She started playing with her classmates , raising her hand in class , and even making jokes. Our friendship taught me that sometimes all a lonely person needs is someone who truly understands. I will never forget the little girl who taught me the power of kindness and patience.
