When Mia was ten, she always asked her mom to do everything for her. She never helped with housework and even asked her mom to tie her shoes. Her mom was worried but never refused her.
One day, her mom fell ill and had to stay in bed. Mia’s dad was busy with work and couldn’t stay at home. Mia had to look after her mom by herself. She tried to cook porridge, but it was burnt. She tried to wash clothes, but they were still dirty. She felt tired and wanted to give up.
Seeing Mia’s frustration, her mom said softly, “Mia, growing up is not easy. It’s about trying your best even when things are hard.” Mia listened and decided to try again. She asked her dad for help by phone and learned to cook simple porridge. She washed clothes carefully and cleaned the room.
After a week, her mom got better. She looked at the clean room and the hot porridge Mia made, and she was very proud. Mia realized that she could do many things by herself. She no longer asked her mom to do everything for her. She helped her mom with housework every day and became more independent.

① “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” This old saying tells us the importance of balancing study and relaxation. For students like us, “work hard” means paying attention in class and finishing homework carefully. “Play hard” doesn’t mean playing without control. It means taking part in meaningful and relaxing activities after hard work.
②Firstly, working hard helps us get knowledge and develop good habits. When we focus on learning, we can understand difficult problems better. This process also teaches us how to manage our time and get over challenges. However, studying for too long without a break can make us feel tired and less efficient at learning.
③ Then, how can we “play hard” correctly Playing sports is a great way. It not only makes us stronger but also helps our brains relax and get ready for the next round of study. Besides, hobbies like drawing or music can reduce stress and bring joy. Even hanging out with friends for a while can make us feel happy and clear.
④ So, how to balance them A good way is to make a simple plan. For example, after 45 minutes of study, you can take a 10-minute break to relax your body or listen to a song. Remember, “play hard” is the best reward for “work hard”. By balancing both, we can live a healthier, happier and more successful school life.
23.What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A.To introduce the main idea by using a famous saying.
B.To tell an interesting story about a boy named Jack.
C.To explain why studying for a long time is not good.
D.To show that playing is more important than working.
24.According to the text, what is a good way to “play hard”

There is little rain in deserts. Because deserts are so dry, they have no “quilt” to help stop the soil from going away. As a result, they may get very hot during the day with the sun shining, but don’t hold the heat overnight. Many deserts can quickly get cold once the sun goes down. Some deserts can reach temperatures of over 100 degrees F during the day and then drop below freezing (32 degrees F) during the night.
The largest hot and dry desert in the world is the Sahara in Northern Africa. The Sahara is a sandy desert with great sand hills. It covers over 3 million square miles of Africa. Other large deserts include the Arabian Desert, the Gobi Desert, and the Kalahari Desert.
Animals that live in the desert are also used to needing little water. Many get all the water they need from the food they eat. ▲ The camel stores up fat in its hump while other animals keep something they need in their tails.
Only certain types of plants can live in the terrible environment of the desert. You won’t see a lot of tall trees in the desert. Most plants have a way to keep water in their leaves or trunks, so they can live a long time without water.
Now deserts cover around 20% of the world’s land, but they are growing. This is called desertification and is caused by different reasons including human activities. The Sahara is growing larger and larger each year. What should we do with it

Get Close to Nature
Last weekend, I went to a nearby forest park with my friends to get close to nature. We walked along the quiet paths, listening to the birds singing and smelling the fresh flowers. The tall trees shaded us from the sun, and the clear stream made soft sounds.
This experience taught me that nature is our best teacher. It calms our minds and makes us realize how important it is to protect the environment. We should spend more time outdoors to enjoy its beauty and learn to live in harmony with it.
