It’s late autumn in the Arctic Ocean(北冰洋). Ice starts to grow
on the water’s top. This makes it hard for white whales to find open
places to come up for air. “They have to come up to breathe(呼吸)
air,” says Donna Hauser, a scientist who studies the sea.
The white whales know it’s time to leave for warmer waters. So
a group of about 100 white whales swims south to the Bering Sea(白
令海). The Bering Sea is between the United States and Russia.
When they are halfway to their journey, the white whales find themselves swimming between
two large ice pieces. Suddenly, they meet a large dangerous sea animal — an orca(虎鲸). Luckily,
orcas are not better at swimming through ice pieces than white whales. So the white whales can
swim faster and get away.
The white whales are safe for now. “But before they get to their destination — the warm Bering
Sea, they must go through the Bering Strait(白令海峡). It connects(连接) the Arctic Ocean and the
Bering Sea. They need to get there before this waterway turns into ice,” Hauser says.
At last, the white whales get to the Bering Strait, and it hasn’t become ice yet. After swimming
for a few more days, they arrive at the Bering Sea. The white whales will rest, look for food and
play here until April. Then they will swim back north.
27. What do white whales come up for in open places
A. Ice. B. Air. C. Food.
28. What helps the white whales run away from the orca
A. Their strong fights. B. The large ice pieces. C. Their swimming skills.
29. What does the underlined word “destination” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. 目的地 B. 方向 C. 海洋
30. What’s the best title for the text
A. White Whales Are in Danger
B. White Whales Are on the Move

Singapore: Where Rules Rule
Singapore is a small country. It’s famous for its strict(严格的 ) rules. People are often

That is, people mustn’t chew gum.
Cross the Road Safely
If you come to Singapore, be careful where you cross the road. Look for a pedestrian
crossing(人行横道). If you cross the road in any other place, you will get a $500 fine.
