In 2024, my niece Caroline received a Ph. D. in gravitational-wave physics. I watched a little of her dissertation defense(博士论文答辩) online, and was lost as soon as she finished
introducing herself.
Caroline’s academic achievements seem especially impressive if you know she could
barely read until third grade. For her, words on a page looked like a jumping mass. A psychologist eventually identified her condition as dyslexia
Fluent readers sometimes think of dyslexia as a tendency to put letters in the wrong order, but it’s more complicated than that. People with dyslexia have varying degrees of difficulty not only with reading and writing but also with pronouncing new words, recalling known words,
recognizing rhymes, dividing words into syllables (音节), and comprehending written material.
Because a common strategy for avoiding the embarrassment of reading aloud is to act in a way that results in being sent to the principal’s office, dyslexic students are often treated primarily as discipline problems. The tragedy is compounded by the fact that proven methods for teaching
dyslexic students — which enabled Caroline to become a fluent reader by middle school — have been known for decades, but many American schools don’t use those scientifically supported
instructional methods.
Caroline’s dyslexia was identified in second grade, and afterward she spent three years at Windward, a private school for children with language-based learning disabilities. Windward’s teachers follow highly structured lesson plans. In the program, students memorize rules about
letter sounds, letter combinations, and grammar. They also receive instruction in essay organization and composition.
When Caroline finished fifth grade and left Windward, her reading level was better than 95 percent of other students, and she later qualified for her new school’s gifted program. Windward had made her not only a fluent reader but also a skilled writer. Toward the end of her third year
there, she wrote a poem that ended, “So come and read, so come and read, Come don those literary Wings!”
24 .What can be inferred about Caroline’s dissertation defense
A .It lacked basic logic. B .It attracted a large audience.
C .It made the author disappointed. D .It showed her academic advance.
25 .What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about concerning dyslexia
A .Its potential tendency. B .Its complex symptoms.
C .Its relevant assumptions. D .Its theoretical foundation.
26 .What does the underlined word “compounded” in paragraph 4 mean
A .Worsened. B .Simplified. C .Explained. D .Recorded.
27 .What is a feature of Windward
A .It specializes in teaching poetry. B .It replaces conventional schools.
C .It provides prizes for gifted students. D .It adopts a structured teaching program.

Americans born between the 1960s and early 1970s are experiencing higher levels of
loneliness and depression compared to previous generations. Unusually, they also show declining memory and physical strength. This trend stands in sharp contrast to many wealthy nations,
particularly in Nordic Europe, where midlife health and well-being have generally improved.
To understand why the U.S. differs so greatly, researchers analyzed data from 17 countries. Psychologist Frank J. Infurna explains that the American midlife crisis is not about lifestyle
choices but rather the struggle to balance work, finances, family, and health amidst weakening social support systems. The findings suggest that both personal efforts and societal changes are needed to address this issue.
A key difference lies in family policies. Since the early 2000s, European nations have
increased spending on family benefits, such as paid parental leave and subsidized childcare. In
contrast, U.S. spending has remained flat. These policies are crucial during midlife when adults
often care for both children and aging parents. Consequently, middle-aged adults in countries with stronger support report less loneliness. Additionally, while the U.S. spends heavily on healthcare, high out-of-pocket costs limit access and increase stress, contributing to anxiety and medical debt.
Income inequality further widens the gap. Unlike in Europe where inequality has stabilized, rising inequality in the U.S. correlates with poorer health and increased loneliness. Cultural factors also play a role; Americans move more frequently and live farther from extended family,
weakening long-term social ties. Moreover, later U.S. generations have built less wealth, facing greater financial insecurity due to wage stagnation and economic recessions.
Surprisingly, education is losing its protective power. Despite higher education levels, U.S. middle-aged adults show declines in memory, a pattern unseen elsewhere. Researchers suggest
chronic stress and financial insecurity may weaken the cognitive benefits education once offered. While individuals can build resilience through social engagement and a sense of control, experts argue that stronger societal safety nets—like paid leave and affordable healthcare—are essential for improving midlife outcomes in America.
28.What makes the situation of middle-aged Americans unique compared to their peers in Nordic Europe
A .They suffer from worsening health and mood.
B .They prefer driving sports cars to relax.
C .They have higher levels of educational degrees.
D .They move to new cities less frequently.
29 .Why do family policies in Europe lead to better midlife outcomes according to the text
A .They encourage people to live near their parents.
B .They reduce the burden of caring for family members.
C .They force companies to hire more middle-aged workers.
D .They provide free medical treatment for all citizens.
30 .What can be inferred about the role of education in the U.S. nowadays
A .It guarantees a wealthy life for everyone.
B .It completely prevents memory loss in old age.
C .It fails to fully protect against mental decline.
D .It causes more stress than it did in the past.
31 .What solution does the author emphasize for improving midlife well-being
A .Relying solely on individual willpower.
B .Moving closer to extended family members.
C .Combining personal effort with policy support.
D .Reducing spending on healthcare systems.
D
The Atlantic Forest along Brazil's coast once held rich wildlife. However, human activity has reduced it to one-third of its original size. As people move into these areas, wild animals
leave, and mosquitoes are turning to humans for blood, a new study shows.
Researchers trapped mosquitoes in two nature reserves in Rio de Janeiro. They analyzed the blood inside female mosquitoes to see what they had eaten. By checking DNA markers, they
could tell which animals were bitten. Out of 24 identified blood meals, 18 came from humans. The rest were from birds, a mouse, an amphibian, and a dog-like animal. Some mosquitoes had even
bitten both humans and animals.
Scientists say this happens because forests are disappearing. With fewer wild animals
around, mosquitoes must find other sources. “Humans are now the most common hosts in these areas,” explained Dr. Machado, a researcher. This shift is dangerous because mosquitoes can
spread serious diseases like Yellow Fever, dengue, and Zika to people.
Although only a small number of mosquitoes had detectable blood, the results are clear. Mosquitoes in damaged forests prefer human blood when wild hosts are scarce. This knowledge helps experts create better plans to stop disease outbreaks. By watching mosquito behavior
closely, communities can act faster to protect public health.
In the future, protecting forests may also help reduce disease risks. Keeping ecosystems
balanced ensures mosquitoes have natural hosts, lowering the chance they will bite humans. This study reminds us that harming nature can directly harm our own health.
32 .What mainly causes mosquitoes to bite humans more often
A .The increase in human population.
B .The loss of forest and wild animals.
C .The change in mosquito species.
D .The rise of dangerous diseases.
33 .How did researchers identify the sources of mosquito blood meals
A .By observing mosquito behavior in labs.
B .By counting the number of trapped mosquitoes.
C .By analyzing DNA markers in the blood.
D .By studying the habitats of wild animals.
34 .What can be inferred from Dr. Machado’s words
A .Mosquitoes naturally prefer human blood.
B .Wild animals are no longer safe from bites.
C .Human presence forces mosquitoes to adapt.
D .Diseases will soon disappear in these areas.
35 .What is the main purpose of the study
A .To prove forests are important for wildlife.
B .To warn people about mosquito-borne diseases.
C .To show how ecosystem changes affect health.
D .To encourage more research on mosquito species.

Last night, I heard a story that left me thinking: a friend was driving home late on a rainy day when a cat suddenly dashed out from the shadows. Before he could put on the brakes, he hit
the cat. As he stood by the side of the road, shaken, his first thought was: “It was just an accident — I didn’t mean it.” 36 The question has stuck with me like a fish bone in the throat.
Neuroscience offers a clue: our brains are wired to protect our sense of being a “good
person.” 37 A similar phrase is “I had no choice”, which also allows us to avoid facing the complexity of our decisions.
38 In the days that followed, he couldn’t shake the guilt. He replayed the drive endlessly in his mind, and gradually, a different truth emerged: he had been tired, he’d taken a shortcut that he knew was poorly lit, and he had been checking a text message just moments
before. 39 In the end, he posted about the incident online, no longer calling it an “accident”, and even made a donation to a local animal rescue.
His story reveals a crucial truth: accidents are often the result of a series of choices we
make rather than pure randomness. In our daily life, we use “it is an accident” constantly.
40 More often than not, we cannot blame the rain, the cat’s sudden dash, or any other external factor — there are no real excuses. Instead, we must separate choices from accidents. True responsibility lies in acknowledging our choices.
A .These set the stage for the tragedy.
B .How can we lighten our moral load
C .We truly bear no responsibility for the outcome.
D .But the label “accident” offered him no real comfort.
E .Life may happen to us, but it doesn’t fully excuse us.
F .Why do we reach for the word “accident” so quickly
G .Calling something an “accident” often serves this purpose.

On my first day of school last year, I walked through the front gate feeling nervous. My family had just moved to a new state, and everything felt unfamiliar. The school was huge, the hallways were loud with voices and footsteps, and I worried I wouldn’t be able to keep up with my classes. I felt small.
Academically, things went better than I had expected. My teachers were patient, and I did especially well in English, a subject I had always loved. Writing had always been my way to
express myself by telling stories of others, and I often felt more confident on paper than in person. Still, none of that seemed matter when it came to making friends.
At lunch, students sat in tight groups, laughing and sharing secrets. I sat by myself, feeling invisible.During group work, I spoke little of my ideas, afraid of embarrassing myself.
Hoping to make a change, I had intended to invite several classmates to my house for a
holiday activity. But when the holiday approached, I hesitated. What if I was rejected From then on, I stopped trying to reach out and spent most weekends alone in my room, wondering if moving here had been a mistake.
One afternoon in English class, my teacher handed back our essays. When she reached my desk, she nodded and smiled. After class, she asked me to stay behind. Nervous, I wondered if I had done something wrong.
Instead, she told me how moved she had been by my writing and said I had a real talent for storytelling. Then she mentioned that the school was planning to hold a writing competition and asked if I would be interested in entering.
Her words caught me completely off guard. I had never thought of my writing as something special let alone something others might notice. As I walked home that day, I kept thinking about her encouragement, and for the first time since moving, I felt a sense of hope.
注意:
Holding my pen, I started to tell my own story in the new school.

W: Because of oil stains. Even a little food left on them means the whole lot can’t be recycled. Remember what happened last winter
M: You mean when the collection truck refused our building’s bins But that was plastic bags mixed with bottles!
W: It’s the same kind of problem. Now, for glass — only clear bottles go in green bins. Colored glass must go to the downtown center.
M: That’s a 40-minute drive! What if I clean wine bottles very carefully
W: I’m afraid not. Colored glass needs a different recycling process. No exceptions.

M: Of course. Where are you trying to go
W: I need to get to Oxford for a university visit. There are so many options here. The 9:15 train seems perfect — it arrives at 10:30.
M: Actually, that’s not your best choice. The 9:15 requires you to change trains at Reading Station. If you take the 9:30 instead, it goes directly to Oxford.
W: Oh, thank you. I definitely prefer a direct train. Which platform does the 9:30 leave from
M: Let me check... It sets off from Platform 4. You’ll need to go through the underground tunnel to get there.
W: How long does the journey take
M: It takes exactly one hour, so you’ll arrive at 10:30, the same as the other option, but without the trouble of changing trains.
W: That’s wonderful! And where can I buy tickets
M: There are ticket machines near the entrance, or you can use the ticket office. The machines are usually faster.
W: OK. I will go with the former. Thank you so much for your help!
M: You’re welcome. Good luck with your university visit!

In Mali, many traders like Ada are finding new ways to do business. They are using a
unique app called Lenali, developed by City Bay, an IT engineer from Mali. The app is
specifically designed for people who cannot read or write. Unlike other social media, Lenali offers voice guides in local languages like Bambara and Sonic. Users can set up profiles, publish posts
and comment on others’ goods by recording their voices instead of typing. For Ada, this means
she can easily send her store’s location and photos of her goods to attract customers. In a country where only 1/3 of the population has received education, Lenali provides a vital bridge. Since its launch in 2017 the app has gained over 73,000 users. City Bay expects the business to become
profitable once it reaches 200,000 users, continuing to help those who were previously left behind by the digital age.

What to Bring & Know Before You Go 部分中的“We can accommodate vegetarian and nut-free diets if reported at least 24 hours in advance.(如果提前至少 24 小时报告,我们可以满足素食者和无坚果饮食的需求。)”

In 2024, my niece Caroline received a Ph. D. in
gravitational-wave physics.(2024 年,我的侄女 Caroline 获得了引力波物理学博士学位)”和第二段中“Caroline’s academic achievements seem especially impressive if you know she could
barely read until third grade. For her, words on a page looked like a jumping mass. A psychologist eventually identified her condition as dyslexia
根据第三段“Fluent readers sometimes think of dyslexia as a tendency to put letters in the wrong order, but it’s more complicated than that. People with dyslexia have varying degrees of difficulty not only with reading and writing but also with pronouncing new words,
recalling known words, recognizing rhymes, dividing words into syllables (音节), and

划线词前文“Because a common strategy for avoiding the embarrassment of reading aloud is to act in a way that results in being sent to the principal’s office, dyslexic students are often treated primarily as discipline problems.(因为避免大声朗读时尴尬的常见方法是通过某种行为让自己被送进校长办公室,所以阅读障碍学生通常主要被视为纪律问题)”提到,读写障碍学生常被错误当成违纪学生处理,这本身已经是悲剧;后文“proven methods for
teaching dyslexic students — which enabled Caroline to become a fluent reader by middle school — have been known for decades, but many American schools don’t use those scientifically
supported instructional methods(针对阅读障碍学生的有效教学方法——这些方法让 Caroline在中学阶段就能成为熟练的读者——早在几十年前就已被知晓,但许多美国学校却并未采用这些经过科学验证的教学方法)”补充说“有效的教学方法几十年前就已经验证有效,但很多美国学校却不使用” ,这会让原本的悲剧变得更糟糕。
Windward’s teachers follow highly structured lesson

Americans born between the 1960s and early 1970s are
experiencing higher levels of loneliness and depression compared to previous generations.
Unusually, they also show declining memory and physical strength. This trend stands in sharp contrast to many wealthy nations, particularly in Nordic Europe, where midlife health and
well-being have generally improved.(20 世纪 60 年代至 70 年代初出生的美国人,与前几代人相比,正经历着更高程度的孤独感和抑郁情绪。

故选 A 项。
根据第三段“Since the early 2000s, European nations have increased spending on family benefits, such as paid parental leave and subsidized childcare. In contrast, U.S. spending has remained flat. These policies are crucial during midlife when adults often care for both
children and aging parents. Consequently, middle-aged adults in countries with stronger support
Surprisingly, education is losing its protective power. Despite
higher education levels, U.S. middle-aged adults show declines in memory, a pattern unseen
elsewhere. Researchers suggest chronic stress and financial insecurity may weaken the cognitive
根据第二段“The findings suggest that both personal efforts and societal changes are needed to address this issue.(研究结果表明,解决这个问题既需要个人努力,也需要社会变革)”以及最后一段“While individuals can build resilience through social engagement and a
sense of control, experts argue that stronger societal safety nets—like paid leave and affordable

Scientists say this happens because forests are disappearing.
With fewer wild animals around, mosquitoes must find other sources.( 科学家表示,这种情况的发生是因为森林正在消失。
根据第二段中“By checking DNA markers, they could tell which animals were bitten.( 通过检测 DNA 标记,他们能够确定哪些动物被叮咬过。)”
Humans are now the most common hosts in these areas,”
explained Dr. Machado, a researcher. This shift is dangerous because mosquitoes can spread
serious diseases like Yellow Fever, dengue, and Zika to people.( “现在在这些地区,人类是最常见的宿主,”马查多博士解释道,他是研究人员之一。
In the future, protecting forests may also help reduce disease risks. Keeping ecosystems balanced ensures mosquitoes have natural hosts,
lowering the chance they will bite humans. This study reminds us that harming nature can directly harm our own health.( 未来,保护森林或许也有助于降低疾病风险。

67 . Holding my pen, I started to tell my own story in the new school. I poured my heart onto the paper, describing the loneliness I felt during lunch breaks and the fear that held me back from making friends. Yet, I also wrote about the small glimmers of hope, like the kindness of a teacher who noticed me and the first time I felt brave enough to raise my hand in class. As I finished, a
sense of relief washed over me. Submitting my essay to the competition felt like taking a step out of the shadows.
After announcing that I was the winner, my teacher read my writing before class. As she
read, the room fell silent. I glanced around and saw nods of understanding and even a few smiles. When she finished, there was a round of applause. A girl sitting nearby turned to me and said, “I
