There I was, after 12 hours of travel, standing on Lexington Avenue and hoping for a New York miracle. I’d only been in Manhattan for an hour, and already was flagging down a taxi (拦出租车) late at night and shouting “Follow that taxi!”
Well, more accurately: “Follow that little dot on this tiny map.” Meaning the GPS-enabled dot moving around a screen as part of the Find My iPhone feature. The dot indicating that somewhere out there, in one of New York City’s other 13,000 taxis, sat my daughter’s blue bag that she’d left behind, containing her diary school laptop, notebooks, iPhone and Air Pods she’d bought with her saved-up allowance.
The daughter, who at that very moment was curled up on the hotel bed, was in tears, regretting her thoughtlessness. I was a small-town dad in a huge, unfamiliar metropolis (大都市), with maybe half an idea of what I was doing, at best. But I couldn’t stand to see her crying. I had to get that bag back.
An explanation is in order: at the airport terminal, we’d had to switch to another taxi to get a ride into Manhattan. Our first taxi driver quoted us a fare higher than it should cost, and when I asked why, he immediately threw us out of his taxi. We piled into the next waiting taxi. It wasn’t until getting to our hotel, an hour later, that we realized the first taxi driver had sped away with the bag inside.
While I called 311 (非紧急情况电话), my wife remembered she’d set up tracking on our daughter’s phone in case of emergencies, and pulled up its map, excited to discover a little dot that refreshed every 15 seconds or so, traveling around the streets of midtown. Talking to the woman working 311, I casually remarked, “I’m half-tempted to get another taxi and have them chase after this dot on the map.”
“Well,” she said “that’s probably what a New Yorker would do.” Challenge accepted. The first taxi driver that pulled over laughed at my wild goose chase, but the second said, “Yeah. Get in.” His name was Gani. And so began our three-hour hunt for the missing bag.
24. How did the author discover that daughter’s bag was lost
A. They realized it when they got to the hotel.
B. The daughter called and told him.
C. He saw the taxi driver speeding away with the bag.
D. They found the bag was missing when they got into the taxi.
25. How did the daughter feel when she found out her bag was lost
A. Indifferent.
B. Annoyed.
C. Desperate.
D. Relieved.
26. What did the author consider doing after discovering the dot on the map
A. Continuing to call 311.
B. Waiting for the dot to come to him.
C. Finding another taxi to pursue the dot.
D. Giving up on looking for the lost item.
27. Which of the following would the author probably agree with
A. People in big cities were more helpful than his hometown.
B. Technology could sometimes make a difference.
C. New York was a dangerous and scary city.
D. He was close to quitting tracking the bag’s location.
C
Studies have shown that writing by hand can have enormous beneficial impacts in terms of memory, brain development, and even the quality of writing itself.
Some might say that handwriting has become a dying art since the advent of the typewriter in the mid 1880s, even more so due to computers. In fact, nowadays, some schools in the United States no longer require teaching handwriting as a part of the main courses. However, despite the sense that writing on paper is out of fashion, it actually has a number of very important strengths.
Writing by hand is not only important for language processing and memory, but it is also important for mental development. In learning to write by hand, the human brain must combine feeling, movement control, and thinking. For whatever reason, it does not do so when learning to type.
Writing by hand is good for mental health, and there are some studies that can prove it. Writing on paper can help students recall material better than typing on a keyboard. Similarly, a study from 2014 shows that compared to writing by hand, taking notes on a laptop results in a less deep absorption of the learned material. This is because when using a laptop, students will often type out lectures word for word instead of processing information and rewording it in their own language.
These advantages actually translate to how you recall the information. In this case, writing by hand instead of typing also helps students do better on exams. Children write longer and more complex essays when they are writing by hand, compared with using a keyboard. Children usually do better writing with a pen when they write essays. They write more and faster.
The next time you want to sit down to write an email to a loved one, why not try writing a handwritten letter instead It can be more beneficial to your brain. Plus, the personal touch of a handwritten letter can make your message even more special and memorable.
28. What does the underlined word “advent” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Rent. B. Request. C. Alarm. D. Appearance.
29. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about handwriting
A. Its requirements. B. Its types. C. Its development. D. Its advantages.
30. What happens when students use a laptop instead of a pen to take notes
A. They have a lower understanding of the material.
B. They do better in writing essays.
C. They are less confident about their exams.
D. They recall more words.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph
A. To make a suggestion. B. To express thanks.
C. To honour loved ones. D. To share a personal experience.
D
When you were a kid, you most likely had more friends than you do now. As you grew up, your friendship circle most likely grew smaller. You now have just a few really important friendships.
One idea suggests that we become more selective about our friends because we become increasingly aware of our own mortality (生命的有限). In other words, we have future-oriented cognition (前瞻性认知). However, a recent study suggests that our friendships may not actually be tied to thinking about the future.
In this study, a team of researchers analyzed 78,000 hours of observations of 21 male chimpanzees (黑猩猩) made between 1995 and 2016. A unique feature of this study is the value that exists in the long-term collection of data.
Like humans, as these chimpanzees grew older, they increased the number of mutual friendships and decreased the number of one-sided friendships. In these mutual friendships, aged chimpanzees were more likely to groom (理毛) each other, and they engaged in grooming for longer, which suggests these friendships were of high value to the chimpanzees.
These results question some aspects of the socioemotional selectivity theory. While humans have a sense of mortality, it is widely believed that chimpanzees do not. Because we are so closely related to chimpanzees, these findings in the wild chimps might also apply to people. But if future-oriented cognition isn’t the source of this shift in social behavior seen in both humans and chimpanzees, what is Now, the researchers are using the same data set to investigate whether changes in emotional reactivity explain the recent findings from the male chimpanzees.
Joan Silk, a professor not involved in the study, explained that it could be emotional reactivity, but that’s just a possible explanation, different from a complete explanation of how something works. Does emotional reactivity also explain human shifts in friendship selection These are questions that deserve further study.
Anyway, the new study gives valuable insight into how natural selection shapes social relationship strategies as we age, and it is also inspiring because it makes one reconsider the nature of how humans think and behave. Answering questions like this is difficult because humans live such a long time, but what’s important about this study is that it provides long-term data on known individuals that live a long time. By studying our evolutionary cousins, we can learn more about our own behavior.
32. What social change occurs in both humans and chimpanzees as they age
A. They avoid all forms of social grooming.
B. Their friendship circles expand significantly.
C. They value quantity over quality in friendships.
D. They focus on fewer but deeper mutual relationships.
33. The chimpanzee study challenges the socioemotional selectivity theory because ______.
A. young chimpanzees exhibited stronger future-oriented cognition
B. human friendships were proven unrelated to emotional reactivity
C. chimpanzees were found to have a human-like understanding of death
D. the social shift occurs in chimpanzees despite their lack of mortality awareness
34. What did Joan Silk imply about the chimpanzee study
A. Its approach is innovative.
B. Its findings remain incomplete.
C. Its explanation is reasonable.
D. Its conclusions are unbelievable.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. Aging and Friendship: A New Insight from Chimpanzees
B. Future-oriented Cognition: The Key to Friendships
C. The Emotional Reactivity of Male Chimpanzees
D. How Mortality Shapes Human Friendship
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The charm of engaging with wildlife appeals to many. Most people who feed wildlife think they are helping out. 36______ When humans intervene by offering food to wildlife, it can mess with natural behavior and set off a chain reaction of negative effects, possibly even leading to death of the animals.
One major concern is that animals can become dependent on being fed. By relying on human-provided food, animals may lose their natural food-seeking instincts, leading to an inability to survive on their own in the wild. 37______ This potentially increases the risk of malnutrition (营养不良) and other physical problems.
38______ , For example, animals may become more aggressive (好斗的) in their search for food, resulting in conflicts with humans. This aggression can worsen, putting both animals and humans at risk, particularly in areas where wild animals and urban populations coexist.
Feeding wildlife can also upset natural ecosystems by favoring certain species over others. For example, feeding birds may attract an overwhelming number of certain species, which will outcompete native species for resources such as food and nesting sites. This imbalance is likely to have a chain reaction throughout the entire ecosystem. 39______
Additionally, animals that get used to humans may lose their fear, making them more exposed to harm from traffic, pets, and other human-related threats. This could increase death rates among wildlife populations and further influence natural ecosystems. To reduce these risks, it is vital to adopt responsible practices when humans are interacting with wildlife. 40______ They can also allow animals to search for food on their own.
A. Most wild animals have a specific diet.
B. Respecting wildlife’s natural behavior is important.
C. Communities can focus on preserving natural habitats.
D. In reality, they could be harming the very animals they love.
E. As a result, it will impact the survival of other plants and animals.
F. Food provided by humans may also not meet their nutritional needs.
G. Regular feeding changes the behavior of wildlife in significant ways.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jamie loved wandering through second-hand markets at weekends, firm in the belief that every old object carried a unique story. One rainy Saturday in November 2024, he caught sight of a thick, old-fashioned wool coat hidden in a corner of a small shop. It looked well-worn, yet still elegant. Driven by a strong desire, he bought it and brought it home.
While cleaning the coat, Jamie felt something hard and stiff in its inner pocket. He carefully pulled out a faded leather-bound diary. As Jamie flipped through the yellowed pages, he realized it was a heartfelt journal kept by a woman named Eleanor, who wrote of her deep longing for her husband, stationed overseas during a war decades ago. She recorded the bittersweet days of raising their young daughter Nancy all alone.
Page after page, Eleanor described their daughter’s first steps and the sharp sorrow when the little girl cried for “Daddy”. She wrote of small victories: teaching the girl to read, mending her dresses, preparing simple but tasty meals. All these were mixed with quiet struggles and the constant fear that her husband might never return. Yet she found strength in the hope that he would one day walk back through their door.
The final entry, dated December 24, 1954, was particularly moving. Their daughter Nancy was falling asleep, as Eleanor wrote, and still asked if “Daddy” would be home to hang the Christmas stockings. “I’ve written down every precious moment,” she noted, “so one day you’ll know how much you were loved. I’ll keep this diary until we can read these words together as a family.”
Jamie was deeply moved. On the back cover, he found a faint old address: No.12, Rosewood Lane. A strong sense of responsibility surged through him. Braving the cold ram, he headed for the address, full of expectation.
However, when he finally reached Rosewood Lane, his heart sank. The house stood empty, its windows in ruins, showing that no one had been there for a long time.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

二、读后续写范文
Jamie was determined to find the owner anyway. He knocked on doors of nearby houses and asked about the family. An elderly neighbor told him that Eleanor had passed away, but her daughter Nancy might still live in the town. With the neighbor’s help, Jamie got Nancy’s phone number and contacted her. On hearing about the diary, Nancy was extremely excited and immediately agreed to meet.
Jamie and Nancy met at a café as agreed. The moment Jamie took out the old diary, Nancy burst into tears. She said the diary was her mother’s most valuable treasure and had been missing for years. She shared many sweet memories of her parents with Jamie. Thanks to his kindness, the precious diary finally went back to the family, bringing back long-lost warm memories.
