Antelope Canyon is a famous slot canyon in Arizona, USA. It is known for its beautiful, wave-like rock formations and the beams of sunlight that shine down into the narrow openings. There are two parts: Upper Antelope Canyon and Lower Antelope Canyon. The Upper one is easier to walk through because it is at ground level. The Lower one is deeper and requires climbing ladders. Mono Lake is one of the oldest lakes in North America. It is located in eastern California, USA. The lake has no outlet (出口), so water only leaves by evaporation (蒸发). As a result, the lake is very salty — much saltier than the ocean. The lake is famous for its strange tufa towers. These are limestone formations that rise from the water like tall chimneys.
Mono Lake is also an important place for birds. Millions of birds stop here during migration to eat tiny brine shrimp (卤虫). However, in the 1940s, water was diverted (改道) from the lake to supply Los Angeles. The lake’s water level dropped quickly, and the tufa towers became exposed. Many birds lost their nesting sites.
In 1994, a court decision ordered that water flow to the lake be restored. Since then, the water level has been slowly rising. Scientists hope the lake will return to health.
