DAY TWENTY-SIX
I. 阅读理解 阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,从题中所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳答案。
A
There are two paths in life: Should and Must. We arrive at these crossroads over and over again. And each
time, we get to choose.
Should is how others want us to show up in the world—what we should or shouldn’t do. When we choose
Should, the risk is small.
Must is who we are, what we believe, and what we do when we are alone with our truest self. Must is why
Van Gogh painted his whole life without ever receiving public recognition(认可). Must is why Reyna Marder
Gentin started to write for the first time after 23 years of being a lawyer.
Choosing Must sounds fantastic, right But Must is scary, hard, and a lot like jumping off a high building
where you can’t see anything down below. How can we actually choose Must
Ask yourself, “What is my Must ” If you don’t know the answer, write down your biggest, most impos-
sible dreams! Don’t worry! It’s just the first step.
Now, think about what’s actually in your way. Is it your parents Maybe they’re just worried that you have
not thought it through. Try to make a practical(可行的) plan for what you want to do. Your parents may find it
a good one. Is it money Well, the best way to make money is to do what you love because it’s very likely that
you will pay great attention to it. Choosing Must doesn’t mean we need to give up everything we already have.
It’s about changing one small thing at a time.
If you believe that you have something special inside of you, it’s about time you gave Must a try—today.

Samelyn Lafuente, a young teacher from a primary school for girls in Masbate City, Philippines, spent the
last 1 years turning a boring classroom into a little girl’s dream world, decorated in pink and full of Hello
Kitty-themed(主题的) decorations.
Walking into Samelyn Lafuente’s 2 , you would probably think that it is a crazy Hello Kitty fan’s world.
The floor is covered with a Hello Kitty-themed carpet(地毯). The walls are all 3 , as are the school desks.
And there are Hello Kitty decorations everywhere, hanging from the ceiling, stuck on the walls and 4 in the
windows. It’d be hard for parents of little girls in Ms. Lafuente’s class to move them away from this 5 world
in pink every day, which is just what the teacher planned all along to create a place where her students would be
happy and enjoy their time at school.
Photos of this pink Hello Kitty classroom were 6 on the Internet by Glay Franco Bacolod, and quickly
spread in several Asian countries, including China. People are praising Lafuente highly 7 she tried hard
to make sure of the happiness of the young students, even if it meant 8 everything out of her own pocket.
The teacher said that almost all the decorations were bought with her own money, but seeing the 9 in the
children’s eyes every day makes it all worth it.
Lafuente told GMA News that during the last three years, she 10 added more pink and new decor-
ations to change her classroom.

Does life sometimes seem to be full of impossible problems How many times, for example, do you
find yourself saying things like “I really don’t understand this math problem”, or “I can’t get into the school
team’ Well, maybe it’s time to introduce yourself to the power of “yet”. By adding this simple word, you
can change everything. “I really don’t understand this math problem yet.” “I can’t get into the school team
yet.” Suddenly, the impossible becomes possible. You can imagine those things happening.
I read about a school that has changed the way it marks its students’ exams. The school find out that
the old pass/fail system wasn’t helping students’ motivation(积极性). If you passed, then great, but those
students who didn’t pass often felt like failures. So now students who don’t pass the exams will not see a
big red F on their papers; they see a “Not yet” instead. That way the students feel that they are on a journey.
They haven’t reached the end, but they know that they are going the right way.
This kind of thinking is part of what experts call “having a growth mindset”. People with a growth mind-
set don’t concentrate on failure. They aren’t worried by not getting things right the first time and are happy
to keep trying until they do. They enjoy the challenge and believe they can change. In contrast(对比), peo-
ple who just focus on the failure have what the experts call “a fixed mindset”. These people are always
worried about failure and are happy to give up when things don’t go right. They don’t think that they are
able to change. Clearly, it is better to have a growth mindset than a fixed mindset.
But don’t worry if you think that you have a fixed mindset. ________________. Remember that it all
starts with questioning the things you believe about yourself. Stop believing that you can’t or you haven’t
and realize that you just can’t or haven’t yet. Once you start doing this, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do
it before. It’s one small but very powerful word. (2023 浙江金华中考改编)

The Four Seasons, written by the Italian musician Antonio Vivaldi, was first played about 300 years ago.
Since then, it has enjoyed worldwide popularity.
The great musical work includes four parts: “Spring”, “Summer”, “Autumn” and ‘‘Winter”. Each part brings
to mind the season it is meant to describe. “Summer”, for example, begins slowly. Listeners can easily picture a
hot, lazy summer day when nobody wants to move. When you listen to “Autumn”, a harvest celebration will quick-
ly come to mind.
But now, Hache Costa, a music director in Spain, has decided to give the old work a fresh feel. He says the
climate today is very different from what it was in the 1700s. The Four Seasons would be “a lot dirtier” if it were
written now.
Costa has “updated” the musical work to make it match the realities of the modern world. The “updated”
musical work has been played in Madrid, Spain. The performance takes place in front of a screen. As the musi-
cians play, a video shows the effects of climate change, such as forest fires and unusually dry weather.
After enjoying it, people find the new “Summer” now sounds noisier and more powerful. Because of global
warming, the other three seasons have become shorter. Costa says he expects people to feel “really sad” after lis-
tening to the new Four Seasons.
“I really want more people to become truly aware of (意识到) what is happening to our planet,” says Costa.
“And I believe Vivaldi would not be angry with my changes.” (2024 湖南长沙中考改编)

Sunshine does make people happier. Imagine how cheerful you are when it clears up after long cold rainy
days. Let’s discover science behind sunlight.
Sunlight causes you to produce a chemical called serotonin(血清素). When you are exposed to sunlight,
your body will make more serotonin. Higher levels of serotonin will keep you in good spirits. At night, when
55
初中英语专项技能实践(中考阅读)
there is little or no light, your body produces another chemical—melatonin(褪黑素). It helps your body relax
and will make you feel tired, which can prepare you for a good night’s sleep. You should keep a good balance
between these two chemicals.
However, for many people, it is hard to balance sunlight with darkness. People who stay indoors a lot may
not get enough sunlight. The light in a house is usually about 100 times less than that outside on a sunny day.
That’s why it is believed that those people should get outside in the sunshine. They can get some exercise, enjoy
the fresh air and be happy, all at the same time.
There are places where it gets dark for a long time in the winter. People in those places are easier to get sea-
sonal affective disorder (SAD). People with SAD usually go through bad experiences such as low energy and
sadness. The most common treatment for those people is to sit under bright artificial(人工的) lights for some
time.
The roles that sunshine plays in people’s life are more than those above. For example, your body produces
Vitamin D from sunlight, which is important for being healthy. In fact, there is more science about sunlight for
you to discover. So next time, when you notice the sunshine on your shoulder, take a moment to think, “Why do
we love sunshine ” (2025 河南中考改编)

Can you imagine a school with only one student There is one on the Out Skerries Islands, and Aron is the
only student.
The Out Skerries Islands, which are around 280 km from the coast of Scotland, are home to about 70 peo-
ple. The nearest town is Lerwick on the Shetland Islands. You can only get there by boat and it takes two and a
half hours. Besides Aron’s school, there are also two shops, a church and a community hall on the islands.
Aron wasn’t the only student at the school at first. Until July there were several other children there. But now

The school is very small. It has two classrooms, an art room, a music room and a library. Each week Aron
studies math, English, science and art with the same teacher. She also gives him PE lessons. This is usually a long
walk around the islands. He also has the school playground all to himself. Of course, there is one problem. He
has no one to play with.
Aron has lived in Out Skerries since he was born and loves the outdoor life. He enjoys exploring the islands
on his bike and jumping into the sea from the pier(码头).
But his mother is worried that Aron might get lonely. She would like to see more families with children com-
ing to live there. Many people have moved away since the local factory closed ten years ago. That’s why there

What did people do to communicate in ancient times Here are some very interesting answers to this ques-
tion.
Alphorns were once used to communicate in the mountains in Switzerland. They’re very long and they’re
very heavy, too. So, alphorns are hard to blow. Then why use them Well, they make a loud sound which travels

much further than the human voice. Herdsmen(牧民) used them to call cows in the distance for milking. At sun-
set, alphorns were also used to send a message down to villagers that all was well. These days, they are mostly
used as musical instruments.
The people of La Gomera, an island in Europe, have their own special way of sending messages from moun-
tain to mountain. They use a whistled(口哨的) language called el silbo, which comes from their language Span-
ish. Whistling can be heard within five kilometers, which means it can be used across much greater distances
than shouting. El silbo can be used for all kinds of messages, including greetings and announcements. El silbo
is used a lot less than it used to be, but primary school students in La Gomera must learn it.
Did you know it’s also possible to send messages without making a noise This is called visual communi-
cation, and it includes the use of flags and even smoke. Long ago, soldiers along the Great Wall of China used
smoke as a warning. If they noticed the enemy from their signal tower, they lit a smoky fire. When soldiers in
other towers saw the smoke signal, they lit fires too. In this way, messages about the enemy’s arrival could tra-
vel as far as 800 km in just a few hours.
