Steve Wells is a British man who loves looking at trees. He spends most of his weekends
doing so, plus evenings sometimes, alongside his day job. “I like giving my time to something
worthwhile,” he says. “If I can help to protect our beautiful trees and woodlands, then I have spent my time well.”
In spring 2024, Steve joined Observatree, which is a non-profit project between several
organisations and charities. It is run with 200 volunteers who have been trained to recognise new diseases and pest threats to UK trees.
He visits trees, whether individually in woodlands or in parks, to look for symptoms (症状) affecting their health. Also, he keeps reports on his findings and hands them in to the Woodland
Trust where the information is added to a database for the use of professional researchers. “One of the good things about this project is that it is really flexible,” he explains. “The minimum
contribution required is 12 surveys a year but it is easily achievable. Last year, I actually handed in 40 reports.”
Sometimes his work involves more than just looking at trees, with reports followed up with the collection of samples (样本), which are sent to Forest Research for testing. “There are 22 main pests and diseases that need special attention, including ash dieback, sweet chestnut blight and the oak processionary moth,” explains Steve.
The Woodland Trust recently asked him to become a lead volunteer to help and support
other volunteers, and he is excited about what his second year of surveying (勘查) will bring. “If the trees could talk, I imagine the stories they could tell me about what has happened around them over the years. I really like surveying at places of historic interest for that reason, where some of the trees have been around for hundreds of years,” says Steve.

It is hardly surprising that rivers have been an important part of human history: They
provide food, freshwater, and rich land for growing crops. While water is crucial to life, it can be a destructive force, too. When rivers flood, the effects can be destructive. Flooding is one of the
most common types, and it is often fatal
While floods bring damage, they also bring nutrients and essential components for life. Seasonal floods can renew ecosystems, providing life-giving waters in more ways than one.
Floods transport vital nutrients to the surrounding land. When the water flows away, it leaves
nutrients behind on the floodplain. This rich, natural fertilizer improves soil quality and has a
positive effect on plant growth, thus increasing productivity in the ecosystem. Ancient
civilizations first started along the river mouths of seasonally flooded rivers, such as the Nile in Egypt, because they provided rich soil for farmlands.
Floods can supply underground water sources. Floodwater goes into the ground, and then passed through beds of soil and rock, finally reaching underground aquifers (含水层). These
aquifers supply clean freshwater to springs, wells, lakes, and rivers. Ecosystems rely heavily on groundwater during dry spells when it may be the only supply of freshwater available. A good supply of groundwater has a great impact on soil health and leads to more productive crop and pasture lands.
Floods are a force of nature, and their results, both positive and negative, are strongly felt by affected ecosystems. Floods can be destructive to humans and the natural environment, but
they also help to drive biodiversity and are essential to the functioning of many ecosystems.
Whether you consider floods to be good or bad, one thing is for certain: The world would be a very different place without them.
28 .Why does the author mention the role of water in paragraph 1
A .To show its importance in life. B .To lead in the topic of flooding.
C .To present an argument about water. D .To describe the damaging force of nature.
29 .What made the Nile one of ancient civilization birthplaces
A .The nutrients left in the water. B .The plant growth on the farmland.
C .The groundwater sources in the ecosystem. D .The soil quality improved by fertilizer.
30 .What can we imply from the text
A .Floods only bring damage to ecosystems.
B .Floods are the main source of all groundwater.
C .Floods provide freshwater directly to the rivers.
D .Floods are important for underground water renewal.
31 .Which of the following is the best title for the text
A .The Results of Floods on Agriculture B .The History of Flooding in Ecosystems

A new museum of laughter - the HaHaHouse - in the Croatian capital Zagreb has opened to the public recently. 43-year-old Andrea Golubic is the museum’s creator. The idea “came straight from the heart”. She finished designing many of the museum elements in one day: “That’s how
the HaHaHouse began. ” Golubic said a picture of her when she was a seven-year-old inspired (启发) her to build such a museum. “I was often making jokes as a kid,” she added.
As visitors step inside, a light soft white smoke surrounds them — and their first joy is
waiting: a playful button near the entrance, inviting them to “wash away negativity (消极)” to kick off their journey. With a quick press, strange sound effect rings out, as if blowing away worries in a second.
From there, they move down a winding slide and land in a bright, open space filled with
soft little white balls - the balls make a light rustling sound when stepped on, and laughter can be

heard around, perfectly matching the joyful tone set by the button. This is just the start of the museum’s eight interactive areas, where surprises appear at every turn; one area houses a large number of chickens singing cheerfully, while others invite visitors to dive deeper into
laughter-filled moments.
Golubic said the HaHaHouse is suitable for everyone from small children to older people. Adults get a good excuse to act like a child. All those who still feel a bit of childish joy and hug their inner child will recharge themselves.
Last week, Bruno Dadic, a retired worker, spent a whole afternoon at the HaHaHouse. “Life can never have too much humor -- this place feels like a much-needed breath of fresh air for the spirit. Laughter is a medicine for the soul, after all,” he shared, adding that he’s already looking forward to finding his way back for more.
32 .What gave Golubic the idea to build the HaHaHouse
A .A suggestion from her friend.
B .Her love for making jokes.
C .A photo from her childhood.
D .Her early trips to museums.
33 .Why did Golubic set up the HaHaHouse
A .To help visitors let go of their stress.
B .To offer visitors a chance to interact.
C .To make more money to support those in need.
D .To hold the largest number of model chickens in Croatia.
34 .What is Bruno Dadic’s attitude towards the HaHaHouse
A .Supportive. B .Doubtful. C .Uncaring. D .Unclear.
35 .Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A .The Purpose of Museums Has Changed
B .Laughter Is the Best Medicine for Humans
C .Modern Life Is Becoming Increasingly Challenging
D .A Museum of Laughter Can Solve Bad Feelings

A good after-school program can turn free after-school hours into productive learning time. 36 Here are four things a good after-school program can do for those kids.
Learn social skills.
37 And with chances to interact (互动) freely, they are able to practice and experiment with social skills. They are allowed to fail and then learn from their mistakes.
Provide learning support.
Many after-school programs offer homework help. Homework can often cause unhappiness between kids with learning and attention problems and their parents. 38
Besides, personalized help from after-school program teachers allows students to learn a lesson they may have not understood during the day.
39
Some after-school programs offer classes in areas like science or computers. In these classes, there aren’t tests and students may work together in groups. For kids with learning and attention
problems, these classes can be relaxing, fun and meaningful. Programs may also offer arts choices like painting and music, which can help kids find new interests.
Build confidence.
For kids with learning and attention problems, an after-school program may allow more room for mistakes than school does. The risks may not feel as high. 40 This, in turn, can lead to higher confidence.
A .Encourage teamwork.
B .Make learning more fun.
C .As a result, they may feel freer to try new things and take more risks.

When it comes to packing, obviously you need your travel documents, your phone and
charger. Then think about any medicine you might need. How did I stay in touch with family
When I first arrived, I wrote a letter every week. They took at least four weeks to arrive though.
Then, when I met someone else who had a blog, I realized that that’s the thing to do. A phone call is nice, but the time difference can make that difficult.
There are lots of things you’ll need to adapt to when you’re in another country. The language of course. But luckily, so many people speak English. And I knew I’d struggle with the hot food. I
hadn’t realized the effect the climate would have on us, though. Generally speaking, I really enjoyed my time away. It’s a good way to make friends, and you gain confidence too.

seasonally flooded rivers, such as the Nile in Egypt, because they provided rich soil for

These aquifers supply clean freshwater to springs, wells, lakes, and rivers.(洪水能够补给地下水源。
It is hardly surprising that rivers have been an important part of human history: They provide food, freshwater, and rich land for growing crops. While water is
crucial to life, it can be a destructive force, too.(河流在人类历史中一直扮演重要角色,这并不令人惊讶:它们提供食物、淡水和肥沃的耕地。
