Question:
In ancient China, willow branches (柳树枝) were often used as a parting gift between friends and family members. (1)
Answer:
One reason is that willow trees are strong. (2) Because of this unique (独特的) feature, giving a willow branch to say goodbye to loved ones is a way to tell them you hope they will easily adapt to their new living environment.
Meanwhile, in Mandarin, the pronunciation for the willow tree “liu (柳)” is similar to the character “liu (留)”, which means asking someone to stay — only the tones (声调) are different. (3) Even though we know that they must leave, we still do like that.
(4) At that time, Baqiao, a bridge in Chang’an, today’s Xi’an, was a common place to say goodbye. People often stopped there and handed willow branches to departing (离开的) people.
(5) In The Book of Poetry, there is the line “When I left there, willows shed tears.” At the time of the Tang and Song dynasties, such poems were common as traveling was easy and poets felt the sorrow of separation. For example, Wang Wei wrote “The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green,” in his famous poem A Fond Farewell to a Friend.
A.They can survive in any soil, wet or dry, north or south.
B.When the willow leaves become dark green, spring is gone.
C.It’s said that this custom became popular during the Han Dynasty.
D.Do you know why willow branches are a symbol of farewell (告别)
E.So offering a willow branch is like asking the other party (对方) to stay.
F.Willow branches, as a symbol of farewell, are often mentioned in poems.

One morning in September 2018, after a bad thunderstorm, I found a baby bird on the ground outside our home. His eyes were tightly shut and he was shaking. The poor little bird was left behind by his flock (鸟群). Clearly, he was too young to be able to survive on his own. I placed him in a cardboard box with tea towels. I stayed up all night that day to research how to care for him.
The next day, he woke with his mouth wide open to let out a sharp hunger call. I fed him termites (白蚁) and chirped (叽喳叫) at him. He chirped back, jumped into my hand and then fell asleep in my palm (掌心). To him, I was a mama bird.
For the next 84 days, the cute little thing lived on me. Wherever I went, he would fly alongside me. He would make short flights from my hand to my head and then slide (滑行) down from my long hair to my hand to rest again. He went into hiding in my clothes while I learned his different calls. I never named him because he didn’t belong to me — I had to remind myself that he needed to return to the wild.
Almost three months later, he was stronger, more confident and flying farther from me. His flock returned to the grasslands. It was time for him to go. Before I flew back to England in November for the holiday season, I decided that the bird should be allowed outside to fly daily. I took him out to the flock three times. On the fourth day, the bird flew away with them.
When I returned in January, I would watch out for him whenever the finches (雀科小鸟) flew past. I still cry when I think of him. I wrote our story into a book, Fledgling. That, along with the lesson that any tiny animal can make a difference, will be his legacy (遗赠物).
49.According to the article, where did the baby bird like to rest
A. On the ground. B. In a cardboard box.
C. On the tea towel. D. Inside the writer’s hand.
50.Why didn’t the writer name the bird
A. Because she considered it strange to name a bird.
B. Because she could not come up with a satisfying name.
C. Because she knew the bird would sooner or later fly back to its flock.
D. Because she was sure that birds could not understand human language.
51.What was the writer’s purpose in writing the article
A. To introduce a kind of baby bird.
B. To call on people to care for tiny animals.
C. To encourage people to look for baby birds.
D. To tell people how to take care of a baby bird.
C
We do eye exercises. We wear sunglasses. We do lots of things to protect our eyes. But we usually forget another important part of our body—the ears. Ears help us hear the world. But many things, such as loud noises, can hurt our ears, even make us deaf. Once this happens, it’s hard to get your hearing back. March 3rd is Ear Care Day. So how can we protect our ears Let’s take a look together.
Keep your ears dry and warm
Dry your ears with a towel after swimming or taking a shower. If you feel water in your ear, shake your head a little bit. This can help you get the water out of your ear. Also, when the sun is shining, wear some sunscreen (防晒霜) on your ears. During the cold winter, protect your ears with a hat or a scarf.

Usually, our ears clean themselves. The earwax (耳垢) builds up, dries out, and then comes out of the ear along with some dirt. Don’t clean your ears with anything sharp (尖锐的), or it may make the earwax go too deep into your ears and hurt them. But if your ears start to hurt, you can go to a doctor for help.
How to use earphones
Don’t listen to loud music on your earphones for a long time. Follow the “60 Rule”: listen to music for no more than 60 minutes a day. Over-ear (头戴式) earphones are better than in-ear ones. It will do a better job of stopping outside noise. So you can listen at a lower volume.
52.Which of the following ways is bad for your ears
A. Wearing a hat or a scarf in winter.
B. Using sunscreen on your ears in summer.
C. Using a towel to dry your ears after swimming.
D. Shaking your head a lot when water’s in the ear.
53.Which of the following can be put in ▲
A. Don’t hurt your ears B. How to clean your ears
C. Pay attention to earwax D. How our earwax is formed
54.What does the underlined word “It” refer to in the last paragraph
A. Following the “60 Rule”. B. Listening to loud music.
C. Wearing in-ear earphones. D. Wearing over-ear earphones.
55.In which part of a newspaper can you probably read the passage
A. Health. B. Travel. C. Stories. D. Music.

My name is Henry Adams. When I was 27 years old, I worked in an office in San Francisco. One Saturday afternoon, I sailed my little boat out into the Bay of San Francisco. The strong wind pushed my boat out of the bay and into the Pacific Ocean. Luckily, I was saved by a British ship. The ship was heading to London.
I had only one dollar when I arrived in London. I walked around Portland Place, trying to get some food. At that moment, the window of a nearby house opened and a man said to me, “Come in here, please!” I was taken to a beautiful room. There two old gentlemen were sitting and discussing something. The two gentlemen had made a bet (打赌), which I knew nothing about until later, but I will tell you about it now.
The two gentlemen were brothers. For several days, they had been arguing about a very strange subject. One brother said, “If an honest and clever stranger arrives in London without a friend and without money, except for a 1,000,000 bank note (钞票), he will starve to death. If he goes to the bank or anywhere else to change this big note, the police will put him in prison. Everyone will think he stole it. The other brother answered, “No, I disagree.”
The two gentlemen decided to end their argument with a bet. They selected me because I had an honest, clever face and because I was a stranger to England. One of them gave me an envelope and told me not to open it until I was in my hotel room.
After leaving the house, I opened the envelope and saw that there was money inside of it! I rushed to the nearest restaurant. After eating, I tried to pay with the money but discovered that it was a bank note worth five million dollars! It made my head swim. No one could possibly cash (兑换现金) it. The owner said, “You can pay for the meal whenever you want, sir. I understand that you are a very rich gentleman. You like playing jokes on people by dressing like a poor man.”

Yancheng Nature Reserve welcomes about three million birds for wintering every year, including 138 national rare wildlife species, mostly the red-crowned cranes. It is also the largest wintering ground for red-crowned cranes in the world. As many as 1,080 red-crowned cranes came here for wintering last year.

64.【答案】Doing housework is glorious (光荣的). I often help my parents with some easy housework, such as making the bed, washing dishes and tidying my room. Sometimes I also water flowers and sweep the floor.
I think it is necessary for us to do housework. First, it can share our parents’ work and make them less tired. Second, it teaches us life skills and makes us more independent. What’s more, it helps us learn to be responsible.
In my opinion, doing housework is a good way to grow up. It not only keeps our home clean but also makes us better people.
