Passage 1
(2025·辽宁模拟)
Having perfected his craft for more than 50 years, Josh Simpson is widely known for one-of-a kind “Planet” globes that hold novel and fantastic shapes and colors. Decades ago, he gave glassblowing demonstrations to local students in his studio in Springfield, Massachusetts. Simpson started by showing the middle-school students how to make marbles(弹珠).
Josh Simpson’s works have been exhibited in the White House and numerous international museums. Select pieces are currently on permanent display at the Corning Museum of Glass, Yale University Art Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Arts and many more. As a master of glass blower, Simpson has been shaping glass into art for more than 50 years. His creations, which have been showcased around the world, range from the small planetary globes to the world’s largest paperweight. The 100-pound Megaplanet was commissioned(委托) by the Corning Museum of Glass in New York State. “Simpson is a wonderful artist and teacher who connects the natural world to glass in a way that creates joy, ” said Amy Schwartz, director of a glass-making school.
More than 3, 000 of Simpson’s palm-sized planets are hidden around the world. He got the idea of hiding his tiny glass creations in 1976, after finding children’s marbles from long ago in his garden. In 2000, he invited others to help him hide the planets. He calls the archaeological adventure “The Infinity Project”. “The Infinity Project connects people to glass because we’re endlessly fascinated by those tiny little worlds and how they’re created, ” Schwartz said.
“Melted glass is one of the most challenging materials for an artist to work with. The hot liquid just wants to drip on the floor. It will burn you if you touch it. Working with a material like that is amazing and challenging, but it’s also really fun. I’d like to hide more planets in museums. ” Schwartz told the journalist in an interview.

Passage 2
(2025·安徽模拟)
When it gets cold, some customers come to my shop to buy a special tea with a hard-to-pronounce Chinese name Lapsang Souchong. They like to drink it while reading a book near a warm fire. This tea has a smoky taste, and some people really like it, while others don’t.
Winston Churchill liked it because it reminded him of his cigars(雪茄) and a type of whiskey. An actress named Lynn Redgrave also enjoyed it with milk for breakfast.
Legend has it that Lapsang Souchong might have been the first black tea produced in China, where green teas were most common. In 1646, soldiers passing through a Fujian village in the Wuyi Mountains camped in a tea factory filled with fresh leaves awaiting processing.
When the soldiers left and the workers could get back into the buildings, their delicate green leaves had oxidized to a red colour. They quickly dried it with pine fires and sold it to get some money back.
To their surprise, the unusual tea was sold at a high price and eventually found its way to Dutch traders in Amoy, who were eager to fill their ships with as much tea—green or black—as they could acquire. The long sea trip from China to Amsterdam needed the tea to be well-preserved, and this special Wuyi tea kept its good quality even in the wet and tough conditions on the ship.
One of my favourite uses for Lapsang Souchong is as an ingredient for my Thanksgiving turkey. I always slip a few teaspoons of dry tea leaves under the skin of the bird before placing it into the oven. Soon, the kitchen smells as if a fire has been lit in the fireplace, and guests comment on the smell when they enter the front door. What’s great is that the tea gives a smoky taste to the turkey juices, which makes my gravy(肉汁) taste better—an American Thanksgiving meal with a turkey that has a Chinese tea flavour.

Passage 3
From online tools that screen student reading levels, to studies linking school environment to brain development, each year advancements in education research shed light on new ways to foster and support student learning. However, once these discoveries are made, the next hurdle is scaling them so that as many students can benefit as possible.
“In order to do that, we really have to think about the world that we’re trying to affect, and who decision-makers are—who gets to select whether or not a student gets access to some resource that we found is really effective, ” said Susanna Loeb, professor at Stanford Graduate School of Education(GSE).
Loeb joins hosts GSE Dean Dan Schwartz and Senior Lecturer Denise Pope on School’s In as they discuss research that makes a difference in student learning, how to apply research in context-sensitive ways, and how to ensure equitable access to the most effective innovations in learning. They focus on high-impact tutoring as an example of a scalable(可扩展的), equitable learning intervention.
“We’ve seen from the research that this kind of individual attention focused on academics, but with a consistent tutor who also builds motivation and makes it fun to do. . . is the most effective way that we know of improving students’ learning, and we have really unequal access to it, ” said Loeb. “So, we’ve been trying to think about how you get students across the country access to tutoring when they need it. ”
They also discuss how teachers and parents can advocate for students. “Most of SCALE is really focused on school districts, the state level and somewhat at the federal level. . . But there are so many people, particularly families and parents, that can be helpful in bringing these approaches to the minds of the decision-makers, ” Loeb said. “We are trying to think about how we can get the full range of the decision-makers to speak in a similar language and communicate clearly so that we have the best chance of getting this to as many students as we can. ”
