Researchers in the psychology department at the University of California at Los
Angeles(UCLA) have discovered a major difference in the way men and women respond to
stress. This difference may explain why men are more likely to suffer from stress related
disorders.
Until now, psychological research has maintained that both men and women have the
same“fight or flight”reaction to stress. However, the UCLA research team found that men and
women have quite different biological and behavioral responses to stress. While men often
react to stress in the fight or flight response, women often have another kind of reaction which
could be called “tend and befriend”.That is,they often react to stressful conditions by
protecting and nurturing their young (“tend”),and by looking for social contact and support
from others—especially other females (“befriend”).
Scientists have long known that in the fight-or-flight response to stress,an important role
is played by certain hormones (激素) released by the body. The UCLA research team suggests
that the female tend or befriend response is also based on a hormone, whose name is oxytocin
But now it is being studied for its role in the response of both men and women to
stress.According to the principal investigator,Dr.Shelley Taylor,“Animals and people with
high levels of oxytocin are calmer, more relaxed, more social, and less anxious. While men also
secrete (分泌) oxytocin, its effects are reduced by male hormones.”
The study also showed how fathers and mothers responded differently when they came
home to their family after a stressful day at work. The typical father wanted to be left alone to
enjoy some peace and quiet. For a typical mother, coping with a bad day at work meant
focusing her attention on her children and their needs.
The differences in responding to stress may explain the fact that women have lower
frequency of stress related disorders such as high blood pressure or aggressive behavior. The
tend and befriend regulatory (调节的) system may protect women against stress, and this may
explain why women on average live longer than men.
1.The UCLA study shows that in response to stress, men are more likely than women to .
A.solve a conflict calmly
B.seek comfort from children
C.turn to friends for some help
D.find an escape from the reality
2.Which of the following is true about oxytocin according to the passage
A.Men have the same level of oxytocin as women do.
B.Oxytocin used to be studied in both men and women.
C.Oxytocin has more of an effect on women than on men.
D.Both animals and people have the high levels of oxytocin.
3.What can be learned from the passage
A.Male hormones help build up the body’s resistance to stress.
B.Biological differences lead to different behavioral reactions to stress.
C.In a family a mother cares more about children than a father does.
D.The UCLA study was designed to confirm previous research findings.
4.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage
A.How men and women manage to get over stress.
B.How men and women suffer from different stress.
C.How researchers overcome major stress problems.
D.How researchers deal with stress related disorders.

It was a lazy Sunday morning, the type of day that getting out of bed requires an
effort. When Marilyn and I entered the kitchen,Lori was already at the table doing her
homework.Seeing us coming, she, suddenly, stood and faced me,“Why are there more pictures
of Lisa than there are of me ” she asked.Lisa is our older daughter.
I stared back, not understanding the question.Lori turned and left the room.Caught
off-guard by the question,I looked at Marilyn.“Are there more pictures of Lisa than of Lori ”
Marilyn shrugged and raised her eyebrows in a motion of puzzlement.“Are you aware that
there are more pictures of Lisa than Lori ” I added.
Marilyn said,“I’ve never counted them.I don’t know.”
Marilyn’s answer was the same as my thoughts.“I hadn’t realized that there was any
significant difference. Now why would Lori ask such a question ” I asked.
Marilyn just shook her head and stared back at me.After a few minutes of thought she
said,“When Lisa was born, you were taking photographs. You hardly went anywhere without a
camera. When Lori was born, you were involved in colored slides (幻灯片).There must be
hundreds of slides of Lori somewhere in the house that Lori has never seen or doesn’t
remember.”
After digesting Marilyn’s remarks,I agreed.“After Lori leaves,we’ll look for those
slides.Who knows,we may find more slides of Lori than pictures of Lisa,” I joked.
Later that afternoon, when we were alone,we went into the basement where we had
stored the boxes that we had brought from our previous home.It wasn’t long before we
discovered the trays of slides, and for the rest of the afternoon we looked at each tray, pointing
out those slides that highlighted Lori.
“What are you going to do ” Marilyn asked.
“It’s her birthday in a few weeks,” I said.“We’ll select about one hundred slides with
Lori and convert them into pictures, put them into an album and give to her as a gift.I don’t
know if the album will answer her question, but at least she’ll know that we care enough to
find her an answer.”
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;
Over the next few days,we secretly went through all of our slides.
On November 24,before leaving for work,I opened her door and slipped the album
inside.

根据第二段的“While men often react to stress in the fight or flight
response, women often have another kind of reaction which could be called ‘tend and
befriend’.”及倒数第二段的“The typical father wanted to be left alone to enjoy some peace
and quiet.”
根据第三段的“Animals and people with high levels of oxytocin are
calmer,more relaxed,more social,and less anxious.While men also secrete oxytocin,its effects
are reduced by male hormones.”
根据第二段的“However, the UCLA research team found that men and
women have quite different biological and behavioral responses to stress.”
“Scientists have long known that in the fight-or-flight response to stress,an important role is
played by certain hormones released by the body.”
女是如何克服压力的,因此最好的题目是 A 项“How men and women manage to get over
stress”,故选 A 项。
choices。
此处 and 连接三个并列的动作,took up,dipped 以及 wrote;根据
“took up”可知此处也要用一般过去时,且 dip 一词为重读闭音节词,需双写 p,故填 dipped。
4.in 考查介词。此处“in+语言”表示“使用某种语言”。
5.which 考查非限制性定语从句。分析句子结构可知,此处引导非限制性定语从句,修
饰先行词 a bridge,指物,在从句中作主语,所以填关系代词 which。
6.to appreciate 考查非谓语动词。learn to do sth
enable sb to do sth“使某人能够做某事”,此处陈述的是

Dear Peter,
Learning that you are interested in Chinese literature,I am very delighted.I would like to
recommend you to read a very representative novel Journey to the West.
Journey to the West was written by Wu Cheng’en,a novelist in the Ming Dynasty. As the
first romantic novel in ancient China,it deeply depicts the social reality at that time. The
author first wrote about the birth of the monkey king, and then he met monk Tang, pig Bajie
and monk Sha.However,he mainly described the story of the monkey king, pig Bajie and
monk Sha protecting monk Tang to travel westward to learn scriptures.Monk Tang
experienced many hardships and finally realized his dream.
With humorous language and simple characters, this novel is very worth reading.I hope
that you can learn more about Chinese culture after reading it.
Good luck!
Yours,
Li Hua

Over the next few days,we secretly went through all of our slides. We kept on selecting
and rejecting pictures until we were satisfied. Those pictures brought back memories of the
early years of our marriage and we hoped they showed how we felt about our
daughter.Marilyn had them converted into photographs. Then,we placed them into an album
with a birthday card explaining why her mother and I had put the album together. When the
album was finally finished,we hid the book until her birthday.
On November 24,before leaving for work,I opened her door and slipped the album
inside. Then I left the house and drove to work.I was about to enter the office when the
telephone rang.I picked up the receiver, and on the other end of the receiver,a tiny voice spoke,
“I love you,Daddy,”she said and disconnected. The receiver remained against my ear for a
few more minutes before I placed it on the telephone. Our message had been delivered and
acknowledged.
