Four of the Most Beautiful Roads in the United StatesAlaska Highway, Alaska
In the early days of World War II, fears of a potential attack on the Territory of Alaska stimulated military officials to create the Alaska Highway.
Eagle-eyed motorists may spot caribou, moose and grizzly bears along the road. Those keen on eyeing bald eagles should plan a stop near the Canadian border at the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge. Its wetlands serve as a pit stop for 180 species of migratory birds, including America’s national bird, on their springtime journey towards the ice fields and glaciers at the road’s
northernmost reaches.Highway 101, California
“The 101” is a drivable California postcard, taking motorists past the Hollywood sign in Los
Angeles, over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The route offers a chance to not only see some of the best that California has to offer, but also smell and taste it when the road cuts through the heart of Sonoma’s wine country. Over 400 different wineries there produce varieties of
wine.Hana Highway, Hawaii
The Hana Highway dates to the 16th century, when Native Hawaiians first paved the road with lava blocks. Today, the route is one of Maui’s greatest tourist draws, with its 617 switchbacks
hiding some of the island’s best attractions. The natural pools formed by waterfalls at Waikamoi Stream are a swimmer’s dream. Locals may be driving much faster. So ifyou see a local person driving behind you, you should pull over as soon as you can.Going-to-the-Sun Road, Montana
Millions of years ago, the area around Montana’s Glacier National Park was submerged
under ice a mile deep. The most striking reminders ofthe region’s prehistoric origins are the 25
glaciers that give the park its name. The glaciers have been shrinking for decades, and more than 50 have disappeared entirely since the mid-1800s. Visitors may be flocking to Glacier to see these natural wonders before they vanish.

Fan Jinshi, known as “the Daughter of Dunhuang”, was born in Beijing in 1938 and
developed a passion for cultural relics under her father’s influence, a Tsinghua University
graduate devoted to classical art. In 1958, she achieved a remarkable milestone by gaining
admission to Peking University, where she buried herself in the study of archaeology. It was
during an internship in 1962 that she first stepped in the Mogao Grottoes and instantly fell under their spell. Fascinated by the breathtaking murals and sculptures that bore witness to centuries of history, she made a life-changing decision: to devote her life to guarding this unparalleled cultural treasure after her graduation in 1963.
Life in the remote desert was far from easy. Fierce sandstorms swept there without warning, leaving everything in a veil of dust; the living areas were spartan, lacking even basic comforts;
and the long, painful separation from her family thousands of miles away weighed heavily on her heart. However, she never gave up.
For over half a century, she poured her heart and soul into the research of the grottoes,
leading her team to finish classifying most caves according to historical periods, an achievement that laid a solid foundation for future archaeological studies, and compiling (编纂) the first
volume of The Complete Works of Dunhuang Grottoes. Beyond her academic achievements, Fan Jinshi stood as a pioneer in cultural relic protection. Facing natural erosion and tourist pressures, Fan spared no effort to advocate for legal protection. Her persistent efforts paid off when the
Regulations on the Protection of the Mogao Grottoes was officially made, which provides a legal protection for the site. What’s more, she dared to embrace innovation, launching the
groundbreaking “Digital Dunhuang” project, which allows people around the globe to admire Dunhuang’s charm online without setting foot in the desert, thus ensuring the permanent
preservation and sustainable legacy of this cultural gem.
Now well into her eighties, she still burns with a passionate devotion to Dunhuang’s
cultural heritage. Though her steps have slowed and her hair has turned gray, she continues to offer guidance on grotto conservation, deliver lectures to inspire the younger generation, and tirelessly promote Dunhuang culture to the world.

About 50 years ago, workers found the remains of a large ship (24 meters long) in the sea near Quanzhou, Fujian Province. Scientists believe it was a cargo (货物) ship from China’s
Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279).
Judging from the ship’s design and the objects found on it, it is suggested that the ship was

full of goods (商品) and sailing back to Quanzhou. Long ago, Quanzhou was a very busy port.
Ships like this one sailed many times between China and other countries. If you visit Quanzhou, the historic city in southern Fujian, you can explore many old traditions and activities. Some have existed for hundreds of years. Others show how Quanzhou was an important link between East
and West and still is.
Right now, until October 7th, an exhibition called the “Ship of Peace” is happening in
Beijing at the Fujian Plaza. It tells the story of Quanzhou’s history and rich culture. Quanzhou was a major center for sea trade between the 10th and 14th centuries. Because of this amazing history, UNESCO added Quanzhou to its World Heritage List in 2021, calling it the “business center of
the World in Song-Yuan China”.
At the exhibition, visitors can see different-sized model ships that present how boats were built in ancient China. Visitors can also see Dehua white porcelain (德化白瓷), which is famous in the West as “Blanc de Chine” (meaning “Chinese White”). This delicate pottery was made by craftsmen in Fujian’s Dehua town and was highly valued internationally. Besides, there are also traditional crafts and photographs. They show Quanzhou’s living culture and traditions.

Sharks are among the best swimmers on the planet, but a new research suggests that even they sometimes “hold their breath” while diving deep underwater. The reason is that sharks are
cold-blooded and their body temperature matches the waters they swim in. To do deep dives, they must maintain body heat, and the best way to do that is to close their gills (鳃).
Royer, a leading researcher at the University of Hawaii, set out to study the diving habits of hammerheads sharks. They’re known for swimming in warmer coastal waters, but earlier studies showed they can also dive to over 800 meters below the surface. At those cold depths, the water
temperature falls to as low as 5℃ .
For these sharks, the fall in temperature is a matter of life and death. Because a shark can’t produce its own body heat, it begins to freeze the deeper it goes. Its muscles, eyes and brain
become sluggish (迟钝). If it gets too cold, it can’t swim. And if it stops swimming, water doesn’t go across its gills. It can’t breathe and will eventually drown (溺亡).
How is it that hammerheads are able to go down into these deep depths and survive To
find out, Royer and his colleagues caught the fish and attached an electronic sensor to each shark. The sensor would release itself from the shark’s body after several weeks. The data they found
amazed them: The sharks dived, spent just a few minutes at depths and then they shot towards the surface. They closed their gills and kept water out of their gills so that their body wouldn’t cool
down.
“Unlike animals with lungs, the sharks don’t return to the surface to breathe. Instead, they
simply go to a depth where it’s warm enough for them to feel comfortable and reopen their gills.
Hammerheads are probably not the only species doing so. Our work is another example of how
new electronic sensors help to explain the extraordinary ability of these animals across 400 million years of changing ocean environments,” Royer said.
32 .What does the new research focus on concerning the sharks
A .Their hunting habits. B .Their basic types.
C .Their special behaviors. D .Their body structures.
33 .What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 1 refer to
A .Keeping body heat. B .Holding their breath.
C .Swimming on the surface. D .Diving deep in the sea.
34 .What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about hammerheads sharks
A .How their gills work in the sea.
B .How the temperature drop affects them.
C .Why they can survive the terrible environment.
D .Why they can protect themselves from the cold.
35 .What can we know from Royer’s words
A .Hammerheads depend on their lungs to breathe.
B .The diving strategy may not be unique to hammerheads.
C .It’s hard for hammerheads to adapt to the cold conditions.
D .It’s common for hammerheads to stay long at great depths.

The world of writing is changing. Things have moved very quickly from keyboards and predictive text. The rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) means robots can now write human-quality text without having hands at all.
Recent improvements in speech-to-text software mean even human “writers” do not need to touch a keyboard, let alone a pen. And with help from AI, text can even be generated by decoders that read brain activity through non-invasive scanning. 36 , without having to lift a
finger. The word “writer” may come to mean something very different, as people compose text in multiple ways in an increasingly digital world.
However, learning to handwrite is still a key component of the literacy curriculum in
primary schools. ____37____. But there are a number of important reasons why handwriting will still be taught in schools.
● It helps you remember
Handwriting has important cognitive benefits, including for memory. Research suggests traditional pen-and-paper notes are remembered better, due to the greater complexity of the
handwriting process. 38 In many cases, students become better readers through practicing writing.

Internet connection, a keyboard, charging time or the many other things on which digital writing depends. It only needs a pen and paper and can be done anywhere. Sometimes handwriting is the easiest and best option.
●It is about thinking
Most importantly, learning to write and learning to think are closely connected.
40 . They are developed and organized as they are composed. Thinking is too important to be outsourced to robots!
Teaching writing is about giving students a toolkit of multiple writing strategies.
Handwriting will remain an important component of this toolkit for the foreseeable future.
A .It is very accessible
B .Ideas are formed as students write
C .It has become part of your daily routine
D .Writers of the future will be talkers and thinkers

Alice was a senior high school student who lived at home with her parents rather than living in the school dorm. Every day, her mom Coco would nag (唠叨) her a lot, and this had lasted for years.
In the morning, before Alice went to school, Coco would stand by the door and say, “Alice, don’t use your phone when the teacher is talking.” When Alice came back home after school,
Coco would keep asking, “Did you make any new friends at school Getting along well with your classmates is really important.” Sometimes, she would also say, “Tell me something interesting
that happened at school today.”
At first, Alice tried to listen patiently. But as time went by, she got more and more tired of

Coco’s nagging. She often thought, “Mom talks too much. I wish I could go to a university in another city. That way, she won’t nag me all the time.”
Two years later, Alice’s dream came true. She was admitted to a university far away from home. However, one month before she left, Coco started nagging again, this time about her
college life.“Remember to wash your clothes regularly in college. Study hard but also take care of your health,” Coco would repeat every day. Alice felt even more annoyed. When the day came for her to leave home, she was very happy, thinking she would finally be free from her mom’s
nagging.
But things didn’t go as Alice expected at college. One roommate liked to stay up late
watching movies, and the other often left her things everywhere. Alice didn’t know how to get
along with them. Besides, she had no idea how to manage her spare time meaningfully. She didn’t have many friends there. Her heart was brimming with a feeling of being alone.

A group of around 20 Brazilian dancers and a band in fancy costumes were standing in the street, some of them carrying flags which blew in the wind. Then there was an explosion of bright
colours and lively music and the group jumped into action. The band started playing in energetic samba beat. The dancers twisted and turned, and the crowd began to cheer, clap and sing. The
whole group started marching down the street. The carnival current carried us through the
ever-growing sea of people dancing all the way and passing wave after wave of street stands. Ice boxes of soft drinks and beer lined the narrow streets, with the smell of roasted meat filling the air. I was so caught up in the party fever that I hardly noticed five hours flew by. Even as I lay in bed that evening, the bright colors and lively music were still swimming all around me. How amazing the Rio Carnival is.

her life to guarding this unparalleled cultural treasure after her graduation in 1963.(1962 年的一次实习,让她首次踏入莫高窟,瞬间便被这里的一切深深吸引。
Life in the remote desert was far from easy. Fierce sandstorms swept there without warning, leaving everything in a veil of dust; the living areas were spartan,
lacking even basic comforts; and the long, painful separation from her family thousands of miles
away weighed heavily on her heart.(偏远沙漠中的生活远非易事。 故选 A。

Sharks are among the best swimmers on the planet, but a new
research suggests that even they sometimes ‘hold their breath’ while diving deep underwater. ,以及第四段“How is it that hammerheads are able to go down into these deep
depths and survive To find out, Royer and his colleagues caught the fish and attached an
electronic sensor to each shark.
The reason is that sharks are cold-blooded and their body
temperature matches the waters they swim in. To do deep dives, they must maintain body heat,
and the best way to do that is to close their gills (腮). 为了进行深海潜水,它们必须保持体温,最好的方法就是合上鳃)”,以及第四段“They closed their gills and kept water out of their gills so that their body wouldn’t
cool down. 可知,that 指代上文maintain body heat ,要保持体温,就要合上鳃屏住呼吸,与 A 项“Keeping body heat”意思相同,故选 A 项。
For these sharks, the fall in temperature is a matter of life and death. Because a shark can’t produce its own body heat, it begins to freeze the deeper it goes. Its
muscles, eyes and brain become sluggish (迟钝). If it gets too cold, it can’t swim. And if it stops swimming, water doesn’t go across its gills. It can’t breathe and will eventually drown (溺亡).

根据最后一段“Unlike animals with lungs, the sharks don’t return to the surface to breathe. Instead, they simply go to a depth where it’s warm enough for them to feel comfortable and reopen their gills. Hammerheads are probably not the only species doing so.

72 .范文:
One evening, Alice found herself missing the very words she used to hate. She picked up her phone to call Coco. As soon as Coco answered, she said softly, “Mom, I miss your nagging. My
roommates are difficult to get along with, and I don’t know how to manage my time.” Coco
listened patiently and gave gentle advice: “Try talking to your roommates nicely about your sleep schedule, and also, join a club to make friends.” She also reminded Alice to eat healthy and get
enough sleep. Alice nodded repeatedly, tears welling up in her eyes. For the first time, she felt the warmth of her mom’s words.
Alice felt much better after talking to her mom on the phone. She followed Coco’s
suggestions. She had a calm chat with her roommates, and they agreed to respect each other’s
habits to create a more harmonious atmosphere. She also joined a book club, where she met some like-minded classmates. Gradually, she no longer felt like a stranger in the new city. From then on, whenever she faced troubles, she’d call her mom, no longer feeling annoyed by the nagging.
Instead, she knew it was the most precious gift her mom could give — a love that followed her, even from far away.
