Even though it’s been more than 30 years, Brendan Slocumb still feels the heartbreak over his stolen violin.
In his senior year of high school, Slocumb’s family found their home broken into after a
trip abroad. Slocumb, who had been playing the violin since he was nine, went immediately to the hiding spot under his bed. “I looked. My instrument was gone. I looked again. It was gone,” he
said.
The stolen violin is one of many life experiences Slocumb drew upon to write his book, The Violin Conspiracy. It tells the story of Ray McMillan, a gifted violinist whose family violin is
stolen just before one of the world-class music competitions. For both Slocumb and his character Ray, the violin was a means to get away from a difficult childhood and a ticket to college and a promising job. After graduating from college with a degree in music education, Slocumb has
taught music to students from primary through high school for more than 20 years.
Writing the book was a chance to celebrate Slocumb’s success and honour the people who helped him along the way. In the book, Ray’s grandma Nora — his first supporter — is named
after Slocumb’s grandmother. And Ray’s mentor (导师) Janice is based on Dr. Rachel Vetter Huang, Slocumb’s college teacher, whom he calls “a life-saving force”.
The Violin Conspiracy has been praised for its lively descriptions. After it came on the
market in 2022, thank-yous poured in. Slocumb heard from many Black musicians who said “This is a story that I’ve been carrying along as well. I experienced the same things Ray has gone
through in the story, and no one would believe me. Now it’s out there in the world to see.”
4 .What can be learned about Slocumb’s stolen violin
A .It meant a lot to him.
B .It was stolen by a foreigner.
C .It had been with him for 9 years.
D .It was found hidden under his bed.

6 .What message did these Black musicians want to express
A .They praised the violin.
B .They wrote a thank-you letter.
C .They went through tougher times.
D .They were thankful for Slocumb’s work.
7 .What is the text
A .A children’s story. B .A news report.

Everyone knows this: Slowly turn up the heat on a frog in a pot of water, and the frog won’t jump out. Unaware of the slight increase in heat, it will stay put until — well, until it dies. When it comes to the effect of rising global temperatures on amphibians (两栖动物), the frog-boiling fable is more than just a metaphor (隐喻).
Climate change is becoming one of the biggest threats to frogs and other amphibians,
according to a major study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. Between 2004 and 2022, rising temperatures became the primary reason why more than 100 amphibian species were
slipping toward extinction.
The spread of disease among frogs and the destruction of their habitats have long been
recognized as reasons why many amphibians are decreasing. But this new study establishes
climate change as a major risk for amphibians around the world, too. The soft-skinned animals lack the fur and feathers to help adjust their temperature in this hotter and more drought-stricken world.
Less attention is paid to frogs and other amphibians compared to more well-known groups like birds. But losing amphibians species would be disastrous because they often act as a key link in the food web of ecosystems, wolfing insects down and, in turn, being eaten by larger predators. “Without those amphibians to fill that role, we will see the collapse of this food web,” said Neam, who works for an Austin-based environmental group.
Luckily, habitat protection and other conservation measures have been adopted to help
recover more than five dozen amphibians from Costa Rica to Malaysia. “It’s not all bad news,”
said Jennifer Luedtke, an amphibian group leader with the International Union for Conservation of Nature. “But we really must build on this improvement and significantly increase investment in

Every morning when the alarm goes off, many people face a hard choice: to snooze (打盹) or not to snooze If you happen to be an iPhone user, you may have wondered why the snooze
button gives you exactly nine minutes. This number is not a casual choice as it is tied to historical design and human sleep science.
The nine-minute snooze period is not unique to the iPhone. In the mid-20th century, when mechanical alarm clocks were the main type on the market, a leading producer introduced a
snooze alarm. However, the standard parts of mechanical clocks made it hard to set a double-digit (两位数的) snooze period. Engineers eventually settled on nine minutes, the largest possible
single-digit, to avoid the need to redesign the clock’s structure. Apple might have taken the nine-minute snooze to honor this early invention.
From a physiological point of view, a nine-minute period is practical. Our bodies start to
fall into the second stage of a sleep cycle about 10 minutes after falling asleep. Therefore, a
snooze period of nine minutes allows for less sudden awakening as it helps avoid a deeper stage of sleep. This timing can also reduce sleepiness and make it slightly easier to wake up when the
alarm rings again.
The debate over whether snoozing is helpful or harmful continues among sleep experts. Some research suggests that snoozing provides enough time for the body and brain to shift
gradually from sleep to wakefulness. On the other hand, other studies argue that while hitting the snooze button might give you a brief feeling of extra rest, it breaks your sleep and makes you
more tired than if you wake up with the first alarm. Continuous, undisturbed sleep is generally better for mental abilities and overall health. Finally, understanding your own sleep patterns can help you make the decision between whether to keep hitting the snooze button or embrace the
cruel reality of the first alarm.
12 .Why was the nine-minute snooze used in mechanical alarm clocks
A .To show respect to an early design.
B .To follow the trend of other clock producers.
C .To match the principles of human sleep science.
D .To avoid the change of the clock’s inner structure.
13 .What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A .Different stages of our sleep cycle.
B .Harmful effects of sudden awakening.
C .Scientific support for the snooze timing.
D .Useful methods to wake up more easily.
14 .What does the author suggest at the end of the text
A .Keeping hitting the snooze button to get extra rest.
B .Making a choice by considering your own sleep habits.
C .Ignoring the snoozing effect and getting up immediately.
D .Considering both positive and negative effects of snoozing.
15 .What can be a suitable title for the text
A .Why Is the Snooze Alarm Important B .Nine-Minute Snooze: Extra Rest
C .How Does Snoozing Affect Sleep Quality D .The Snooze Button: Smart Design

Have you ever made a promise to yourself that you didn’t keep Commonly, when the new year ticks over, we make resolutions: going to the gym, studying harder or giving up a bad habit.
16 But what if you want to create a new good habit Well, it’s possible.
The basic idea of a habit is something we do almost unconsciously, as if you’re on
autopilot. An example of this would be having breakfast or saying “please” and “thank you”.
17 But if we don’t have those habits, how can we create them According to a study
published by the European Journal of Social Psychology, it takes an average of 66 days to form a new habit. However, relying only on determination may not be the answer.
18 Do you want to lose weight because you want to be healthier or feel more attractive The issue is, willpower could be subject to your mood-a bad mood may mean you don’t want to do something.
You should also avoid trying to change too much at once—remember that it’s a case of baby steps. Giving up all your favourite foods at once will probably result in failure rather than sustainable practice. If it happens, don’t worry about failing. 19
Finally, don’t do things outside your comfort zone. If you hate mushrooms, don’t persevere and try to add them to your diet just to be healthier. ___20___ After all, what you enjoy might be healthy as well.
Creating new habits might not be quick, but if you follow these tips, you may be able to change something for the better or kick a bad habit.
A .Just start again!
B .Eat something you like!
C .Celebrate every small step you take.
D .Sadly, soon we often end up breaking them.
E .Good habits can be part of your daily routine.
F .Keep exploring until you find a healthy food.
G .Questioning why rather than making up your minds could be the key.

After the fire, the organ was piece by piece, removed from the cathedral and cleaned. The most part came when it was to be reinstalled and harmonized at a
worksite. “Each pipe had to be harmonized with the neighboring pipes. We needed absolute ,” Latry said. “So for six months, we had to wake up late at night to work in the cathedral.”

practical. Our bodies start to fall into the second stage of a sleep cycle about 10 minutes after
falling asleep. Therefore, a snooze period of nine minutes allows for less sudden awakening as it
helps avoid a deeper stage of sleep. This timing can also reduce sleepiness and make it slightly
easier to wake up when the alarm rings again.(从生理学的角度来看,9 分钟的时间是可行的。
Finally, understanding your own sleep patterns can help you
make the decision between whether to keep hitting the snooze button or embrace the cruel reality of the first alarm.(最后,了解自己的睡眠模式可以帮助你决定是继续按打盹按钮还是接受第一个闹钟的残酷现实。)”
