A Letter from Scotland
The Loch Fyne Inn Inveraray Scotland
Dear Marilyn,
Scotland! Wow!!! What a fantastic place! I’m having a great time. I’m afraid that I started off badly by making a fool of myself. I was standing in the great old Bell Tower looking across the
试卷第 3 页,共 14 页
lake at the hills on the other side. This rather handsome guy happened to be standing next to me, so I casually (随意地) said, “It’s really beautiful here in England.” Do you know what he replied “Well, why don’t you go there then ” Then he laughed and explained that he was used to
foreigners’ making mistakes about that. After that bad start, we got on really great, though.
Fergus told me lots about Scotland. I’d already noticed the unusual names: Fergus, Angus, Hamish for the guys and Ina, Gillian and Aileen for girls. They also usually have family names that begin with Mac or Mc — Mackay, McDonald and the like. The Mc or Mac stands for “son of”.
Anyway, Fergus is a Campbell. That’s another typical Scottish name and he is from an old
Scottish family. You know that the Scots have their own traditions with kilts (短褶裙) and all that. Fergus showed me his family’s tartan (花格图案).
I tried some really strange food today. When we had lunch together, Fergus practically forced me to taste something called haggis. That was the first and the last time for me. I have no idea
what it is made ofand I don’t think I want to.
Everybody here is very friendly, not just Fergus. By the way, all that talk about the Scots being mean is not right. Fergus is certainly the opposite (相反的). He says the jokes about the Scots have all been invented by the English, their traditional enemy.
Tomorrow Fergus is taking me to Glasgow. Can you believe it! I thought he would just say goodbye and walk off. But he really seems interested. Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing
some bright lights and discos after all this peace and quiet. I love it here but there are more sheep than people. I hope I’ll have some other sides of life in Scotland to report after tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed! I’ll keep you posted.
Love,
Nancy

If you check the Internet for the saying “Don’t do unto others what you don’t want others to do unto you”, chances are that it will be credited to (归功于) Confucius. Its variations can be
found in many cultures and can be easily understood as a basic rule of conduct in a relationship based on mutual (相互的) respect.
Now here is an incoming email from an unknown lady. She’s offering me a chance to give a course in some public department in-house university. For me the interest is limited, but the mail is very polite.
The offer does not fit my schedule nor how I’d like to make use of my very little private time, but in order to be polite and show appreciation of the opportunity, I will of course answer.
The irony (讽刺) is that immediately after my answer was sent, an automatic mail
message came back, explaining that my correspondent (通讯员) wants to protect herself from any unwanted email and therefore, if I wish to overcome the digital blockade (封锁), I have to go
through a procedure to identify myself. If I don’t, the time spent on my polite reply will be lost as well as my nice guy reputation.
Hmm, isn’t it ironic This lady, protecting herself from unwanted emails, doesn’t apply the same rule to herself and increases the inconvenience for the people she’s more or less asking a
favor from.
So I went through the procedure and spent more time. I then felt this could be shared as a post on my blog and put in much more time.
Thank you, lady. If you happen to read this post, please think about this saying: Don’t do unto others what you don’t want others to do unto you. And check your anti-spam (反垃圾邮件)

“Plant blindness” is caused by a lack of exposure (暴露) to nature and could be cured (治愈) by close contact through activities such as wild food foraging (觅食), a study shows.
According to the study, a lack of knowledge and appreciation of local flora (植物群) results from less time spent with plants and the knowledge and appreciation of it is not an inborn human quality. Due to this, people frequently believe that plants are “less alive” than animals.
Researchers analyzed 326 articles published in academic journals between 1998 and 2020. Most showed people had more interest, paid more attention and were more likely to remember
information about animals. There was no conclusive evidence that this was a characteristic that
humans were born with; rather, the reduced experience of nature in urbanized (城市化的)
civilizations seemed to be the root of the problem. If individuals had regular contact with plants, it
试卷第 6 页,共 14 页
was not unavoidable.
The research shows a drop in related experience with plants leads to a cyclical process of inattention. This can be addressed through first-hand experience of edible (可食用的) and useful plants in local environments.
Studies showed it was common for children — especially when young — not to be able to identify many species. Plant blindness was reported in teachers as well as students, particularly in primary teachers who had not graduated in a science subject. Older people had better plant
knowledge, which studies suggest was because they were more likely to have nature-related hobbies.
Thirty-five studies found that modernization or urbanization had an impact on plant
knowledge. The increased dependence on urban services and a cash economy reduced plant foraging. School attendance and work reduced the time available to spend in the natural
environment. These factors also reduced the time spent with family, negatively impacting the passing down of plant knowledge from older relatives to children.
28 .What does the term “plant blindness” refer to
A .Strong dislike for gardening in nature.
B .Sensitive reaction to certain plant species.

Most of us are aware of“Is the glass half full or half empty ” test. If you pick the former, you’re an “optimist(乐观主义者)”; otherwise, you’re a “pessimist”. It’s not a black-or-white test, but it can measure how one sees life.
According to psychologist Lissy Ann Puno, most of us grow up wanting to be an
optimist—a person who can see the good in any situation and can stay hopeful when facing challenges. For some people, though, life happens and they start to see the glass half-empty instead. Pessimists tend to see the wrong in every situation, and blame external factors when things aren’t going their way.
Being continuously fed with bad news and disappointments can turn optimistic children
into adults that are critical of almost everything. For some, the shift becomes easier, being raised by pessimistic parents. Others still remain optimistic, thanks to a positive household growing up.
“This is why developing optimism in young children is important for their development as adults,” said Lissy Ann. If adopted at an early age, this powerful personality quality can help
children grow into strong adults capable of handling problems with confidence, courage, and hope. What parent wouldn’t want that for their children
“Children are seen as natural optimists,” Lissy Ann said. They come into this world with a pure heart that hasn’t been influenced by societal expectations, life experiences, … mental shock, or authority figures yet. Whether a child grows up to be optimistic or not is partly genetic and
partly environmental. “Childhood experiences, parent-child connection, or authority figures will all have some influence,” she said. Although optimism (or the lack of it) could be passed down genetically, it can also be taught.
32 .What does the underlined part “see the glass half-empty” in paragraph 2 mean
A .Become pessimistic. B .Learn the truth about life.
C .Face challenges bravely. D .Hold onto hope in difficult times.
33 .What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A .Factors affecting children’s life attitude.
试卷第 8 页,共 14 页
B .The harm of receiving negative information.
C .The process of children’s mental transformation.
D .Effective ways to deal with children’s pessimism.
34 .Why is it important for children to be optimistic according to paragraph 4
A .It leads them to future success.
B .It enables them to think creatively.
C .It makes them mentally strong in adulthood.
D .It helps them meet their parents’ expectations.
35 .What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A .Children are more optimistic than adults.
B .Genetic factors decide how children see life.
C .Optimism strengthens the family connection.
D .Proper guidance helps raise optimistic children.

Making decisions in life can be a difficult task. 36 In fact, the decisions you make today will not only influence your future, but also other people and the world in which you live.
Decision-making involves thinking, talking, and searching for information related to a
problem. 37 You do this by talking with others who know about the subject, going to the library, and thinking about two or more solutions.
Decision-making usually happens when events, habits, and ways of living change. An example is your ten-year-old car breaks down and needs much money to repair. You need
transportation to get to work, to do shopping, and to deal with other tasks. 38
In deciding — or making a decision — there is a six-step process:
● Define the problem. Understand the problem clearly.
● Collect and list all the information you can get on the problem.
● 39 It is important to have many possible solutions to the situation. It will take time to research the variety of solutions.
试卷第 9 页,共 14 页
● 40 Look at the good and bad sides to each solution. What are the results of each Answer the questions: Will this solution be good for me... the family... co-workers Stay with your values and those of your family.

● Evaluate(评估) the decision you made. Decide if you need to change your action plan.
A .Set clearly defined goals or action plans.

It would be great, I thought, if I knew how to ski. The other girls who crowded around
Jeanne’s lunch table stared at me. Sue wanted to ask me when I had learned, but as she opened her mouth, the bell rang.
“Let’s go to Mount Wachusett this Sunday. My dad will drive us. Gotta run!” Jeanne
hurried away. How eager was I to impress the new kid at school Jeanne had just moved to our
small town in Massachusetts from Colorado. She had told us all about the ski lodge (小屋) her dad had owned, and how she’d won some skiing competitions. All I’d ever won was a third-grade
spelling bee.
When classes ended, I rushed home to talk to Mom. She works at home designing
brochures on her computer. “Mom!” I dropped my books on the kitchen table and went looking for her. She was in the study. “I’ve got good news. The most popular girl wants me to go skiing with her this Sunday!”
“Is that so ” Mom frowned at her computer. “Skiing Honey, you don’t ski. You don’t even like to ice-skate.”
“I can learn,” I said defensively.
“In a day ”
“And a half. Can we please go to Mount Wachusett before Sunday ”
“Maisie, I’m sorry. I must get this brochure done by tomorrow noon. This weekend’s just impossible,” Mom said with a sigh.
On Saturday I went to the library. When I asked for a book on skiing, the librarian said, “Trying another sport, Maisie ” I replied embarrassedly. “Yeah. Horseback riding did not work out.” “All the ski books are out. How about ice-skating ” the librarian suggested. I just shook my head.
Sunday arrived and I still didn’t know how to ski. 注意:

One of the best-known stories in English history is that of King Alfred and the cakes.
Children are taught the story in which Alfred was on the run (在逃) from soldiers who were
invading (侵略) his country from Denmark and Norway. Alfred hid in the house of a poor woman. She asked him to watch her cakes being baked by the fire. Alfred was thinking about his problems while he was watching the cakes. So he let the cakes burn and was shouted at by the angry poor
woman. No one knows if the story is really true. Certainly, Alfred was the king of parts of
England from 871 to 899 and he did have to fight off the armies that entered his country. Maybe the poor woman would not know how important he was. In those days, news did not always travel to places far away. But whether the story is true or false, it is a good way of helping young people take an interest in the very rich history of their country.

impacting the passing down of plant knowledge from older relatives to children.

When Jeanne and her dad came to pick me up, I went with them as promised. Jeanne talked happily about winning skiing games, but my heart beat so fast that I couldn’t hear her words. At
the ski slope I messed up the straps — my fingers shook so I dropped a ski boot. When I finally
stood, I wobbled, grabbed a nearby rail to stay up, then fell down with a bump. My cheeks got hot as Jeanne pulled me up, her eyebrows frowned like she was confused.
As I spoke the truth, I felt stupid, but relieved, too. I looked at my shoes, speaking softly: “I lied…I can’t ski. I just wanted you to be my friend.” Jeanne’s confused look went away. She
smiled, tapping my ski: “That’s okay! I’ll teach you.” She held my arms while I walked slowly. I fell two times, but her laugh made me smile. By evening, I slid down a small slope slowly,
shouting happily. That day, I didn’t just learn to ski — I got a friend who liked me for who I am.
