Here’s the chance to get published in the Guardian for nature boys and girls
Once again, the Young Country Diary series is open for submissions! Every three months, as the UK enters a new season, we ask you to send us an article written by a child aged 8-14. The article needs to be about a recent encounter they’ve had with nature.
Six winning entries will be chosen and published in the Guardian newspaper and online — two in March, two in April and a final two in May. The deadline for submissions is noon on
Monday 31 March. If you send your piece in early enough, you stand a chance of being published on 22 March.
How your child can take part
First of all, we’re looking for children aged 8 to 14, so we will need your permission as parent or guardian. Then here’s what the child needs to do:
Step 1. Go out one day to where there is some nature. It could be their local woods, their garden, or simply the nearest park.
Step 2. Write an article of 200-250 words telling us what they saw and what happened.
Step 3. Send the article to us using the form below.
Please Note:
Anyone can enter their child who is aged between 8 and 14 and based in the UK. You, the parent/guardian will be contacted if your child’s piece is selected for publication, and you will be paid on behalf of the child.
试卷第 3 页,共 12 页
We ask that the parent/guardian fills in the form attached, rather than your child. Your
responses are secure as the form is encrypted (加密) and only the Guardian has access to your contributions. One of our journalists will be in contact with you before we publish, so please do leave contact details.

A .Parents should pay for their kids’ participation.
B .The form attached should be filled by the child.
C .The contribution should be open to all the participants.
D .Contact information should be available to the Guardian.

At the age of 16, Lasse Stolley from Germany went out for a change after graduation from junior high school. Little did he know that this change would take him farther than 500,000
kilometers — all on trains.
Inspired by a movie he had watched online, Stolley bought a Bahncard 100, a ticket that
allows unlimited (无限制的) travel on all Deutsche Bahn trains in Germany for a year. But Stolley didn’t just travel on those trains. He made his home on trains, living there full-time. During the
day, he took trips and at night, he slept across the seats on high-speed trains.
“I can decide every day where I want to go, whether to the Alps, to a big city or to the sea,” Stolley said.
Each morning, Stolley would check the train connections for the day, and decide what journeys he would take based on the weather and his mood (心情). He might stop off at a

swimming pool for a shower, or enjoy the views with a hike between train rides.
While he didn’t pay rent, Stolley said that he had spent around $10,000 a year on living
expenses, including his $6,400 train pass and entry cost to things like swimming pools. But since Stolley was a “Platinum” Deutsche Bahn customer, he could eat from Deutsche Bahn for free.
To cover his extra cost, he made a buck on the move by working as a programmer from his laptop (手提电脑). In 2023 alone, Stolley spent over 3,700 hours on trains. He also took trains
across Europe with an Interrail pass, and travelled as far as Ankara in Turkey. All of his adventures were recorded on his online blog, named “Life on the Train”.

Doctors say you had better use it before you lose it. The more you sit each day, the more chance you have of getting sick.
Richard Rosenkranz of Kansas State University was among the researchers. He said people who sat for long periods were at great risk of diseases when compared with those who sat less. He said that was especially true for some chronic (慢性的) diseases.
Richard Rosenkranz studied the relationship between sitting and chronic diseases in
middle-aged Australian men. He worked with researchers from the University of Western Sydney. They examined the health records of more than 63,000 men from New South Wales. The men
were between the ages of 45 and 65. The men reported about what diseases they had, or did not have. And they kept record of the amount of time each day that they sat.
The study also showed that exercising every morning for 30 minutes did not reduce the

time instead of sitting at a desk. Dr. Levine also suggests standing while using the telephone or

sugars in your body.

It was late December. It was the great Christmas shopping time. I asked my son and daughter to go together, but they preferred to play at home.
People were busy buying gifts for their beloved ones. It seemed that the bigger the gifts
were the better they would be. I shook my head sadly and walked on. I was shopping alone trying to pick up some thick winter socks to warm my frozen feet.
As I rounded the corner in the store I saw a Christmas tree full of paper angels (天使). On each angel was the name of a needy child whose family couldn’t afford to buy them a gift that
year. Shoppers who picked an angel could buy a simple toy or gift. The store would wrap it and

send it to the child that Christmas.
Around the tree I saw a teenage boy and girl picking out several angels. Their mother was smiling while she watched them. I walked up next to her and started talking with her. She told me that her children started this several years ago when she first explained to them what the Charity Angel tree was for. Each offered to give up one of their toys that year so that a needy child could have one. It didn’t stop then, though. Each year since the kids had saved money they earned
throughout the year and bought more and more children the gifts they wouldn't have otherwise. It had become a family tradition.

Her voice faded, and before I knew it, I was standing before the Christmas tree. Glancing at the flying paper angels, I felt a surge of warmth welling up inside me. I carefully chose one with
the name of a 10-year-old boy, whose family struggled to make ends meet. Determined to bring him joy, I picked out a cool model airplane and a set of storybooks. As I placed the wrapped gifts at the collection desk, the brother and sister, who had sparked my inspiration, flashed me a bright smile, their eyes filled with encouragement. I responded with a smile and a thumbs-up.
Waving them goodbye, I left the store, a plan for next Christmas taking shape in my mind. I decided to involve my son and daughter, who would surely be touched by this meaningful act. The moment I got home, I showed them photos of the Charity Angel tree and shared the heartwarming stories. Moved by what I told them, they immediately agreed to save money and join me next
year. From then on, our family would also contribute to spreading love during Christmas, making helping others an unforgettable tradition.
