It can be really embarrassed(尴尬的) if someone sees you talking to yourself. But don’t feel bad about it!
Talking to yourself actually has a lot of advantages.
You probably know that thinking is good for the brain. It helps us do things like making plans and managing
our feelings. Talking to yourself loud is like showing this quiet inner(内在的) speech. It can help us do better in
different areas like school, sports and work.
Talking to yourself, especially in the third person, can help us manage bad feelings. “Talking to yourself in
the third person is like giving yourself advice,” said Jason Moser, a professor(教授) from Michigan State Uni-
versity, US. Moser uses himself in an example. He does not like flying, but he has to fly often for his work. So
when he is feeling nervous or afraid during a flight, he talks to himself, “Well, you know, Jason knows air travel
is very safe. And Jason has been on thousands of flights.” This can help us to see things from a different aspect
(角度), especially when we’re feeling sad or angry.
When encouragement comes from oneself, it adds to self-confidence. A study invited 72 tennis players to
take part in some matches. Researchers put the players into two groups: one group that said nothing while play-
ing, and the other that talked to themselves while playing. They found that the self-talkers showed more confi-
dence and played better than those in the silent group.
Self-talk also helps to improve memory. Researchers tested four different ways to memorize things: reading
silently, reading aloud, listening to someone else read and listening to a recording of oneself reading. Those who
read out loud recalled(回忆) the information the best, researchers said in their study. It’s because the information
will probably become a long-term memory if it is said out loud. (2024 山东临沂中考改编)

As we know, eating vegetables is good for us. Why do some people like them but others don’t A new study
has found that other people’s likes and dislikes could be a reason. According to the research, people who eat vege-
tables and show a clear dislike for them can influence others.
People may make facial expressions when eating. How does it affect a person watching them A team of
scientists in the UK did a study. They asked more than 200 young women to watch videos of other adults eating
broccoli(西兰花). The people in the videos had different expressions while eating. They would smile, seem neu-
tral (neither happy nor sad), or look disgusted.
The study found that when people in the videos look disgusted while eating broccoli, people watching them
began to like broccoli less. The opposite was not true, however. When someone had a smile while eating broccoli,
people watching them did not like broccoli more.
By watching others, humans learn which behaviors will be good for them. Scientists believe that people might
avoid food that looks terrible. In this way, people can protect themselves from eating something bad or dangerous.
The research focused(聚焦) only on adults, but the team believe that the results could also work for children.
This means, if children see their parents not enjoying certain foods, including vegetables, they might not want to
eat them either.
How does the behavior of adults influence children’s choices of food The team said they hope to understand
more about it. This could help find ways to encourage children to eat more healthy foods. (2024 江苏连云港

February 29th comes up on the calendar only every four years. A year with a February 29th might be good
news if you are paid by the day or the week. But it might be bad news if you were born on a February 29th. You
have to wait three years in between birthdays!
American English has an expression for the unusual situation. February 29th is called a leap day. And the
63
初中英语专项技能实践(中考阅读)
year with a February 29th in it is called a leap year. The year 2024 is such a year.
As a verb, the word “leap” means to jump, or to move quickly. “Leap” can also be a noun, meaning a jump,
or a sudden move.
In a leap year, the dates jump over one day of the week. Let me explain. In 2021, the last day of the year,
December 31st, fell on a Friday. In 2022, it fell on a Saturday. In 2023, it fell on a Sunday. But in 2024, Decem-
ber 31st falls on a Tuesday. It jumps right over Monday.
The reason for a leap day or a leap year is because our calendar doesn’t follow the Earth’s orbit(轨道) around
the sun exactly. Each year, we have a little time left over. So every four years, we put all that time together into
an extra(额外的) day.
Some people choose to marry on February 29th because it is an unusual date. But some ancient people would
likely tell couples not to do it. Leap years were believed to be difficult, and leap days were unlucky. To be honest,
these have no scientific basis(依据).
( )6. How many birthdays does a 20-year-old person who was born on February 29th have
A. 5 B. 10 C. 15 D. 20
( )7. A leap year means one more _____________ is added in the calendar of the year.
A. day B. week C. year D. month
( )8. What day will the last day of 2026 fall on according to the text
A. Monday. B. Friday. C. Thursday. D. Saturday.
( )9. Why do some people choose to marry on February 29th
A. It can save more money for them. B. It’s quite a special date for them.
C. It’s quite an unlucky day for them. D. It’s a traditional custom for them.
( )10. What can we know from the text
A. Scientists tell couples not to marry on a leap day.
B. The leap year or leap day comes once every four years.

Two years ago, I was sitting in my car waiting in a long line for a toll(通行费) station. When I finally reach-
ed the station, the toll station worker told me that the person in front had paid for me and I was free to go. I was
so shocked. I didn’t need to save the 5 dollars. I would never know who he was. I was tired by the heavy traffic
and the long line, and that behavior was surprising and unbelievable, which really touched my heart. So I decided
to pay for the next car waiting in line.
The first time I tried to pay forward the toll, I kept looking into my rear view mirror (后视镜) to see who
I would be paying for. In the mirror, I saw a tired looking taxi driver. And I felt satisfied that my money would
be going to a good place. But before we got to the toll station, the taxi driver had suddenly changed his way and
now there was someone else behind me. She looked upset and was gesturing angrily in a conversation with her
friend. I wasn’t willing to be paying for a woman like that and was certainly judging(判断) her by what I was
seeing in the mirror. Anyway, I paid the toll for both of us and left.
Thirty seconds later I was surprised to hear a honk(鸣笛声). It was the woman and her friend waving at me
from the other way! She looked cheerful and happy. She wasn’t what I thought she was like. This was a valuable
lesson that I shouldn’t judge people so quickly… After all, I don’t know their stories.

DAY THIRTY-FOUR
I. 阅读理解 阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,从题中所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳答案。
A
We all enjoy being part of a group—there’s no better work than teamwork, right Actually, I disagree. Team-
work can be hard. In fact, it was so difficult that I left my office job and started working from home on my own.
It’s a much better fit for me, and it has made me think about why teamwork can make our jobs harder rather than
easier.
Personalities(个性) can make teamwork difficult. There’s often someone on the team that puts their needs
first. The team often goes along with this person, whose ideas might not be the best, just the loudest. Just one
difficult personality can make teamwork bine(结合) several challenging personality types, and it is
even harder.
Not having enough time together can also make teamwork challenging. For example, I was once on a team
where we never had enough time to meet as a group. To successfully work as a team, you need time together—
and lots of it.
A final reason teamwork is difficult is because there’s often no training on how to work on a team. You can’t
just put people in a room and expect them to work well with each other. You need to build trust with your team
members. Think of football players. They aren’t just given a ball and told to play. They practice, and they train.
Team can be hard, but working alone has its challenges, too. When my computer doesn’t work, I don’t have
an IT person to turn to. When I have a great idea, I don’t have anyone to share it with to see if it really is a great
idea. Don’t get me wrong—I still like my team of one and enjoy making all of the important decisions myself.
But now I realize what was wrong with the teamwork I did in the past and how good teamwork could be if done
correctly. And that’s useful information—because one day I might want to turn my ME TEAM into a WE TEAM.

Each year on Feb. 21, UNESCO holds an International Mother Language Day (IMLD). The event is to help
people to pay attention to the disappearance of the world’s languages; many of them are disappearing each year.
UNESCO sees this as a terrible fact.
67
初中英语专项技能实践(中考阅读)
What happens when a language dies out Something great is lost—not just sounds and marks but the way
that people understand the world and communicate with each other. We keep different cultures and traditions
through languages. Kill a language and all these are killed, too.
Through IMLD, more and more people come to realize the terrible situation and try to stop it. Google’s 2018
Endangered Languages Project is a good example. Many speakers and protectors of endangered languages upload
(上传) texts, audios and videos to the project website. They want to introduce the way that people communicate
and express themselves around the world.
The Myaamia Project is the same kind of effort to revive the language spoken by the Miami tribes(部落)
of the United States. Project members work to encourage people to study and communicate with this language,
which died out in the 1960s.
These activities give life to those endangered languages. People who work to keep languages alive are not
limited to the past. Many young people design apps and use social media to support their activities. They “spread
the word” to save the world.
So, while the problem of disappearing languages remains a very serious one, there is hope. We all have a
special feeling of our mother language. This is why we should remember the wise words of late president of
South Africa, Nelson Mandela, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you
talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
( )6. UNESCO holds IMLD every year in order to help people to ____________.
A. learn and use endangered languages B. show their talents in learning languages
C. practice reading skills of mother languages D. realize the situation of endangered languages
( )7. What did people do in Google’s 2018 Endangered Languages Project
A. Discussed how to make good use of Google.
B. Offered online courses on endangered languages.
C. Shared materials about endangered languages online.
D. Translated endangered languages into mother languages.
( )8. What does the underlined “revive” mean in Para. 4
A. 创造 B. 学习 C. 复活 D. 清除
( )9. What can we infer(推断) from Para. 5
A. It is more difficult to protect endangered languages.
B. The disappearance of languages has already stopped.
C. Young people don’t care about endangered languages.
D. Young people have creative ways to protect languages.
( )10. The writer mentions Nelson Mandela’s words in order to ____________.
A. tell the importance of one’s mother language B. show his contributions to language protection
C. tell the trouble in learning endangered languages
D. show the possibility of protecting mother languages

Becoming emotional(感性的)
Thinking back to the past, it seems that we could always remember those things that make us sad or happy
easily. Why 3.________________. The moment you become emotional, you can remember things really well.
Because the amygdala(杏仁核) in our brain is responsible for dealing with both emotions and memories. The
brain wants us to remember those things. When you want to remember some knowledge next time, try to make
yourself angry or excited. Then, take out your book to catch the chance to learn new things.
4.___________________
In an experiment(实验), scientists divided 100 people into two groups. People in the first group were asked
to ride a bike slowly for 60 minutes. People in the second group only had to do it really fast for 6 minutes. It shows
that the short but intense exercise made the brain produce more of a chemical called “brain-derived neurotrophic
factor (脑源性神经营养因子)”. People can remember things quickly with this chemical. 5._______________.
That’s the time when you need to sit down and start to remember things.
