DAY THIRTY-SIX

A
Recently, researchers in Israel have done an experiment and found that gold-
fish are able to navigate(导航) on land after receiving around 10 driving lessons.
The experiment was performed by a research team at the Ben-Gurion Uni-
versity. It was made to see whether goldfish could find their way in a very dif-
ferent environment. Researchers developed a robotic car that could drive for-
ward, backward and from side to side. They called the car FOV—“Fish Oper-
ated Vehicle”. A goldfish was placed inside a water box on the FOV. Using a
set of wheels with a camera system, the FOV recorded the fish’s movements
and swimming directions, and then moved in the same direction.
The scientists worked with six different goldfish. They placed the car in a
small room with a pink target(目标) on one side. The fish would get food when the car touched the target. After
a few days of training, the fish navigated to the target. At first, it took them about half an hour to drive to the
target. But by the end of the experiment, they were able to complete the same task in less than a minute. Shachar
Givon, one of the researchers, said, “As anyone who has tried to learn how to ride a bike or to drive a car knows,
it’s challenging at first.”
Not only did the goldfish show that they could drive to the target, but they also weren’t fooled by false tar-
gets of other colors. They were also able to get free when the car hit a wall. Although the fish may not have
realized they were moving on land, these results show that a fish has the ability to navigate outside its nature
environment of water. It can improve scientific knowledge of animals’ navigation skills.

The Maori arrived in New Zealand from Polynesian islands about a thousand years ago. They were the first

people to live in New Zealand.
In the late 18th century, Europeans came to live in New Zealand. At that time, the population of the Maori
was maybe 250,000 in New Zealand. Over the next one hundred years, wars and disease killed many Maori peo-
ple. By the end of the 19th century, there were only about 40,000 Maori people left. During this time, the Maori
also lost much of their land to the Europeans. Many of them were afraid that they might lose their traditions and
language too, but this did not happen.
Today the Maori population is increasing. There are about 500,000 Maori people in New Zealand. Most live
like other New Zealanders, but they are keeping the Maori language and traditions alive. There are now Maori
radio and TV stations. Many schools teach in the Maori language. Nearly one half of Maori language speakers
are 25 years old or younger.
Maori culture is also alive and well. At the center of Maori culture is the marae. This is a special place for
ceremonies and meetings. Today the number of marae in New Zealand is increasing. Many of the new marae are
in the cities. Now people in the cities can meet and learn about their Maori traditions.
Today most New Zealand cities have Maori festivals each year. Among festival activities are competitions
in speaking, dancing and singing. Children practice for months. Then all the Maori in the area arrive to watch the
competitions and see who wins.
The Maori have gone through hard times. Today they live a comfortable, modern life. They keep their cultural
traditions alive, because they have passed and are passing them on to their children. (2024 江西中考改编)

A
One morning, I stopped at my favorite restaurant to get something to eat and got comfortable at a small table.
Shortly after, I noticed four young people sitting at a table near me. After simply greeting each other and ordering,
they all looked at their phones and continued to do so until their orders arrived. After photographing their food,
they ate, continuing to look at their phones. I was wondering why they came here to eat together. They were ph-
ubbing, or phone snubbing(冷落), a very common problem these days.
You may not know the word “phubbing”, but this kind of act is not strange to you. In fact, 32% of people
report that they are phubbed two or three times a day.
Do you have a conversation on your phone while talking to another person face to face Do you scroll(上
下滑动) through your phone while eating with someone for fear of missing out If your answer is yes to either of
them, you might be a “phubber”.
The writer of The Psychology of Phubbing did a survey and found that the influence of phubbing on rela-
tionships(关系) can be very harmful or destructive. For example, children felt that parents who phubbed them
didn’t care about them. This led to a feeling of being left out. Also, partners who were phubbed might be less
satisfied with the relationship because of jealousy(嫉妒) and worries.
Phubbing is a learned act, so unlearning it is possible. Start by accepting the problem. Set a time limit for
not using your phone. Create areas where phones are off-limits.
Don’t let the modern technology which is designed to bring people together separate you from others.

People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In
recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. It says
75
初中英语专项技能实践(中考阅读)
that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to
eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they
seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens
made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their
waves.
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the
food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine
percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them
even had no experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this
finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some
scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens’ feelings. This is good
news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier. (2024 广东中考改编)

A
Both my wife and I are running lovers. I usually run on the track in my neighborhood. Most people walk
on the track, so I am faster than them. My speed seems amazing to the walkers and I often pass by them twenty
or more times around the track. This makes me feel proud.
One day, a short man came. He didn’t look like much of a runner. I saw him get out of the car and warm up
before running when I passed by two walkers. He started running a few meters ahead of me. He was fast but I
sped up and managed to catch up with him. I had someone to compete with. But after a lap(圈), I fell behind him
and had great difficulty in breathing. After two laps, my foot began to hurt, so I had to slow down and began to
run at my usual speed. This time I could breathe again without sounding like I had a lung disease and the pain
in my foot went away. In a very short time, he was far ahead. He was too fast for me to follow.
That day, I learnt several lessons. In life, there will always be those slower and faster. Some have natural
talent(天赋), and some have trained harder. Don’t judge(判断) the capacity of a person by how he or she looks.
The point is that we each have our own speed. When we are trying to keep up, we often end up hurting
ourselves and being out of breath. Slow down or speed up, but run your race to your best. Don’t run fast when
you should be running slowly. Don’t run at all when you should be walking. Don’t walk when you should be
running. (2023 辽宁沈阳中考改编)

“Today we talked about cars in science class. Many people are all driving at the same time. That’s bad for
