One day, Amanda was diagnosed (诊断) with cancer of an early stage. During this time, she was admitted to a college. She planned to save money to meet the college expense and then seek
medical treatment for the cancer.
Her father, Clint and her friends didn’t want her to put off her treatment due to the expense. They took matters into their own hands and started a GoFundMe campaign. A longtime friend of the family was cofounder of a group named Praynksters, known for random acts of kindness. The friend decided to use their own group to help the family. The group came up with the creative idea to spread the word and invite families, friends, and strangers who wanted to help to take part in a donation activity. The event induced the enormous assistance from the local community.
Clint and Amanda were moved as the crowd passed by and the donations poured in. The
event brought the family over $13, 000 in donations to go towards her medical treatments. The
generous act of kindness gave the family a comforting, and optimistic feeling during a time when all hope seemed lost. Clint said that Amanda struggled with the idea of asking for help. She felt guilty and undeserving compared to others who are also struggling. She is still humbled by it all.
After several months of treatment, life for the family has started getting back to their
normal routine. Once Amanda got her strength back, she returned to school and completed her
bachelor's degree. The family is now inspired to volunteer in their local neighborhood and
contribute to crowdfunding (众筹) efforts. They are grateful for the opportunity to give back and

There’re plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables available in local markets. But while those red juicy strawberries look fresh, consumers have no way of knowing how long the fruit can be stored at home. The same goes for distribution centers and supermarkets.
Now, the food technology startup OneThird, located in the Netherlands, is looking to
change that with an infrared (红外线) scanner that can accurately predict how long fresh fruits and vegetables will last. The startup is named OneThird because one-third of food is wasted due to
spoilage (变质) every year.
The startup’s founders were inspired by a UK company that uses this type of technology in the medical field and decided to see ifit was applicable for food. “I looked at the challenges in the
试卷第 5 页,共 13 页
food-supply chain and found out that 40 percent of food waste is fresh produce. One of the biggest causes of waste is that nobody knows shelf life.” founder and CEO of OneThird, Marco Snikkers said.
Quality inspections at farms and distribution centers are done manually (手动地). An
inspector checks the fruits and vegetables and makes notes about the size and quality. Then the food is sent to consumers without considering travel time or how long the produce will remain usable.
Using the infrared scanner at the distribution center means that inspectors can use the
information to approve shipments that will ensure the produce can be distributed on a timely basis. This means that a shipment of rip e tomatoes will not be sent long distances away.
OneThird’s scanner combines the technology of optical scanners, image modeling, and Artificial Intelligence to provide accurate shelf-life predictions.
The startup found that the technology can reduce up to 25 percent produce waste that was caused by spoilage. “Global food waste has an enormous environmental impact; reducing global food waste cuts global greenhouse gas emissions and promotes global food security,” said Jacob Smith, a climate expert from the University of Maine.
8 .What problem does OneThird aim to solve
A .The high cost of storing fresh fruits and vegetables.
B .Inefficient quality inspections at distribution centers.
C .Food waste caused by uncertainty about its shelf life.
D .Consumers’ difficulty judging the freshness of produce.
9 .What inspired OneThird to come up with the idea of using infrared scanner
A .The use of the device in another field. B .Observation of the food-supply chain.
C .Consumer demands for fresher produce. D .Experts’advice on food waste reduction.
10 .What can we learn about the manual quality inspections
A .They are time-consuming and costly. B .They are not performed at a regular time.
C .The inspectors tend to make wrong judgement. D .The shipping time is not taken into consideration.
11 .What’s Jacob’s attitude to OneThird’s effort
A .Approving. B .Doubtful. C .Tolerant. D .Dismissive.

Researchers at the University of Maryland have developed batteries that use a product
found in crustacean (甲壳纲动物) shells to store energy. The new batteries are more eco-friendly, energy efficient and affordable compared to traditional ones. The scientists are now pushing to
have the product adopted in the commercial production of batteries. They say that using this
product is necessary owing to the increased move towards electric cars and green energy at large.
The world is rapidly changing towards green energy and batteries are at the center of this move, so it is necessary to make batteries eco-friendly. “We think both biodegradability (生物降解性) of material and the performance of the batteries are important for a product, which has the potential to be commercialized,” said Liangbing Hu, the lead author of the study.
According to the study published in Matter, traditional batteries could be quite harmful to the environment. For instance, products such as lithium (锂)used in batteries can stay in the
environment for hundreds or thousands of years.
Crustaceans such as shrimp, lobsters and crabs have hard skeletons whose cells contain a
substance making the shells hard and resistant. Interestingly, this substance is available widely in nature and is often thrown away as waste in food industries. Scientists believe that the product
could be used to improve the performance of batteries. The researchers were able to come up with a cheaper and more renewable battery which is 99.7% energy efficient even after 1000
battery cycles. That is about 400 hours. Further, they found that the batteries can break down in
soil in five months. The leftover zinc, a common metal, can be recovered for continuous recycling.
“The design of new batteries that are respectful of the environment, cheap and producing high discharge capacity, is one of the more important items that must be developed in the coming years,” said Antonio Romero, professor of material sciences at the University of Cartagena in
Spain.
12 .Why are researchers developing the new batteries
A .To employ a product as storage. B .To replace the traditional batteries.
C .To address needs of clean energy. D .To use waste from food industries.
13 .What is an advantage of employing the substance from crustaceans
A .It costs less than lithium. B .It reduces food waste.
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
C .It makes batteries harder. D .It is naturally plentiful.
14 .How does the author describe the new batteries in paragraph 5
A .By quoting experts. B .By providing statistics.
C .By giving examples. D .By making comparisons.
15 .What can be a suitable title for the text
A .Lithium Batteries:A Threat to Environment
B .Crustacean Shells Powering Future Batteries
C .Food Waste:A New Source of Green Energy
D .Zinc Recovery Supporting Battery Development

Street Art is a very popular form of art that is spreading quickly all over the world. You can find it on buildings, sidewalks, street signs and trash cans. Even art museums and galleries are
collecting the work of street artists. 16
Art experts claim that the movement began in New York in the 1960s. 17 This
colorful, energetic style of writing became known as graf-fiti (涂鸦). It showed that young people didn’t want to accept rules and traveled around cities to create paintings that everyone could see.
One well-known New York street artist is Swoon. She cuts out paper images of people and puts them on walls or sets them up on sidewalks. 18 She enjoyed studying art, but as time went on, she got bored with the work she saw in museums and galleries. Swoon started to create
strong and imaginative style, which attracted a lot of fans.
19 Some of them dislike artists who make so much money in galleries and
museums. They choose street art because it is closer to people. Some artists try to express their
opinions in their work. They often want to protest against something. Advertising companies also use street art in their ads because it gives people the impression of youth and energy.
In today’s world, the Internet has a big influence on street art. 20 Many city
residents, however, say that seeing a picture on the Internet is never as good as seeing it live. The street art movement lives with the energy and life of a big city. There it will continue to change
