Auantawan was born without most of his right forearm. The disability was a
barrier to music when, in fifth grade, he said his music teacher wanted all the students to learn to play the recorder (竖笛).
Instead of giving up, Anantawan and his parents decided to find him a different instrument to explore his musical talent. “My family chose the violin because they
thought it was the most beautiful instrument.” Anantawan said. They contacted the Toronto-area hospital near the family, asking them to create an adaptive cast (石膏)
on his arm that would allow the then 10-year-old to hold the bow (琴弓) .
A group of engineers worked alongside Anantawan to build a special device.
With it, Anantawan could use the bow and use his shoulder to make the sound. “From the very first note that I was playing, I was really attracted to the sound and the
connection of my body to the instrument and being able to express my imagination,” he said.
Although Anantawan is grateful for the technology that allows him and others with disabilities to find access to music, he said the most important part of access is the inclusive attitude of teachers, supporters and those who encourage young learners or musicians by telling them they can do anything.
Anantawan is working to provide that space for others. As an associate
professor at the Berklee College of Music, Anantawan founded the Music Inclusion Ensemble, a group of students with disabilities that provide accommodations for
musicians according to their needs. Anantawan hopes to inspire people without being defined only by the challenges they face as a result of their disability.
4 .Why did Anantawan’s family get in touch with the hospital
A .To find a man-made hand for him.
B .To inspire him to learn to play the recorder.
C .To add something to his right arm.
D .To gain advice on adapting a violin.

Drone (无人机) light shows are becoming especially popular in the West. By now, if you live on the U. S. East or West Coasts, you’ve probably been troubled by wildfire smoke. The fires are increasing in frequency and intensity as climate change worsens. And fireworks, as you can guess from their name, cause fires — more than you might think.
That’s what caused a handful of California towns to quit fireworks and turn to drones last year. Sydney, Australia, known for its massive fireworks display, is
considering doing the same due to the risk of wildfires. And fire danger is now top of mind for many U. S. cities as the Independence Day, or the American national day,
nears.
In addition to reducing the risk of fires, drone light shows present a safer
alternative for the folks behind the curtain. Fireworks injured more than 10,000
people last year because they can accidentally erupt while on the ground. Drones
won’t. And since light shows are required to keep the ground below the show clear, there’s no risk of a drone falling from the sky into the crowd.
Drones are also less disturbing, creating only a light buzzing noise. Fireworks, on the other hand, can burst your eardrum if you’re standing close enough. That’s a nuisance for some families with animals, small children, or other people who are
sensitive to noise.
But perhaps the biggest reason for the switch to drones is that they’re thought to be greener. Besides starting fires, firework smoke leaves behind a trail of harmful
chemicals and is considered a pollutant. Drones are also a reusable option, capable of flying potentially hundreds of shows before they even require maintenance. That’s a huge benefit to the environment — and to the companies paying to put on these
performances.
At the end of the day, though, some cities are likely switching to drones simply because they’re cooler. That’s not to say that fireworks aren’t cool. But drones allow for more creativity, with the ability to synchronize (同步) lights to music and recreate complex images in the sky.
Nevertheless, it’s still too early to rush to the conclusion that drones will completely take the place of fireworks in the near future.
8 .Why are fireworks given up in some towns
A .They are too expensive. B .They bring along fire risks.
C .They speed up climate change. D .They are not cool any more.

Sometimes to go forward you must look backwards. Wind-powered ships have been used since ancient times, ever since the invention of the sail. With the coming of fuel-powered ships, however, the sail fell out of favor as a practical way to move
large boats and ships across the ocean. Now, sails are making a comeback as a way to lower the carbon emissions (碳排放) produced by the fuel-powered shipping industry.
Shipping is not an environmentally friendly industry. In fact, the industry is
responsible for about three percent of global emissions. Luckily, the leading figures in the industry have made a commitment to become planet-warming gasses net zero by 2050. This is where the Pyxis Ocean comes in.
The Pyxis Ocean is a ship with two “WindWings”, which was designed by a British company. The ship made its first journey crossing the ocean from China to Brazil in 2023.
But the “WindWings” are not quite sails. Standing up to 37 meters tall, they are designed using the same type of aerodynamic (空气动力学的) principles that make it possible for an aircraft to fly. When not being used, the sails fold down onto the ship’s deck. It is estimated that the wings will save around 3 tons of fuel a day. That is a lot of fuel.
With new, cleaner fuels still in the works, these partial measures to reduce carbon emissions are a godsend. “Ultimately we do need zero-carbon fuels on all ships, but in the meantime, it is necessary to make every journey as efficient as possible,” Dr Simon Bullock, a shipping researcher, said.
Luckily, wind-powered technology is gaining recognition. About 100 out of every110,000 new-build ships are being built using some sort of wind technology. And that doesn’t take into account ships like the Pyxis Ocean which have been, or will be transformed with sails, kites, or other types of wind-powered mechanisms.
12 .What does the comeback of the wind-powered technology indicate
A .The whole world is faced with an energy crisis.
B .Sustainable development has become a global trend.
C .The solutions to modern problems may lie in the past.
D .The shipping industry is determined to turn away from fuels.
13 .What is the main purpose of the “WindWings” on the Pyxis Ocean
A.To reduce the ship’s carbon emissions.B.To provide entertainment for the sailors.
C .To serve as a backup power source. D .To increase the speed of the ship.
14 .What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A .Wind power is playing a major role in the shipping industry.
B .The wind-powered technology is reliable and promising.
C .Fuel-powered ships will soon be replaced by wind-powered ones.
D .Technology innovation is key to addressing environmental issues.
15 .What can be the best title for the text
A .New Ship Sailing into the Future B .Traditional Shipping Taking the Stage C.The Pyxis Ocean: New Hope for the Earth D.“WindWings”: a Return to Ancient Shipping Wisdom

With one and half years of senior school to go, you’re probably experiencing a mix of emotions: excitement about what the future holds, and maybe anxiety about how to handle the coming exams. Don’t worry! Here are a few things that will help you get through the rest of your senior school.
16 This means setting up a system that works for you to keep track of important dates, assignments, and deadlines. This can be as simple as using a planner. In this way, you can stay on top of your work and avoid any last- minute hurry.
Manage your time wisely. Learn to balance your academic tasks with
extracurricular and social activities. 17 For example, you might dedicate
Mondays to Thursdays to homework, Fridays to extracurricular activities, and
Saturdays to sports and hanging out with friends. Whatever system you choose, just ensure it works for you and helps you stay on track.
Keep your grades up. Letting your grades slip during the senior year can be
easy. To avoid this, create a study schedule that allows you to focus on one subject at a time. Meanwhile, do ask for help from your teachers and parents if you’re struggling with a particular concept. 18
Set goals, not time limits. Most people set time limits on their goals, such as
“I’ll finish reviewing this book by Friday!” or something like that. 19 So just focus on the goal, not the timeframe. For example, rather than saying you’ll finish
reviewing one book by Friday, focus on what you need to do to make that happen.
Embrace your passions and start exploring potential careers. Think about what
subjects you enjoy most and what courses you’re passionate about. From there,
research potential careers that are in line with your interests. 20 The more you know about a particular career, the better equipped you’ll be to decide your future.
A .Give back.
B .Get organized.
C .Step outside your comfort zone and try new things.
D .They are there to support you and want you to succeed.

Jason looked at the school science competition application. The deadline was
getting closer, and he had been preparing for months. He often participated in science competitions; however, it seemed his father had never shown any concern for his
projects. The issue weighed on him increasingly as he grew older. Deep down, he
hoped desperately that a victory would finally make his father proud even though he had never voiced it directly.
This time, he acted just as he had before, but his school invited parents to watch the competition. Since his father was a mechanic without much formal higher
education, he never introduced his projects to him. The night before the competition, his father had asked about the project at dinner. “It’s fine, just a school project,” Jason answered quickly but then regretted wasting the chance to share the project with his
father. When lying in bed, the mix of regret over his closed-off attitude and anxiety about the competition left him restless.
What’s worse, when Jason checked his design on the competition day, he found the solar panel model of his project was cracked. It wasn’t completely broken, but it wouldn’t work properly. In the meanwhile, his father texted that he was already at the venue with an encouraging emoji Jason was so stressed that he hadn’t
checked the message.
Other students took turns to present their projects. Jason waited backstage,
fingers nervously brushing the cracked solar panel as his anxiety increased. He had no tools, no spare parts, and the teacher would call his name any second. Just as he felt
like giving up, a familiar figure caught his eyes through the side curtain: his father, standing quietly by the back of the stage area with a bag — something he always carried for work.

选 A。
Luckily, wind-powered technology is gaining recognition. About
100 out of every110,000 new-build ships are being built using some sort of wind technology. And that doesn’t take into account ships like the Pyxis Ocean which have been, or will be transformed with sails, kites, or other types of wind-powered mechanisms.
Sometimes to go forward you must look backwards.
Wind-powered ships have been used since ancient times, ever since the invention of the sail. With the coming of fuel-powered ships, however, the sail fell out of favor as a practical way to move
large boats and ships across the ocean. Now, sails are making a comeback as a way to lower the
carbon emissions (碳排放) produced by the fuel-powered shipping industry.

46 .Our oceans, our responsibility
June 8th was named by the UN in 2009 as World Oceans Day. When it comes to ocean, its pollution is becoming more and more serious. World Ocean Day, falling on June 8th, is aimed at raising awareness of ocean conservation.
Ocean plays a key role in our world. Not only does ocean offer us sufficient
food, but also it maintains the balance of nature. Thus, it is imperative to protect
ocean. First of all, what we can do is to place importance on our daily actions. For
example, garbage can’t be thrown into ocean. What’s more, we can also hand out
leaflets to call on more people to protect the ocean. The more people are involved, the better the ocean environment is.
All in all, it is high time that we devoted ourselves to protecting ocean. To protect ocean is to protect ourselves.

wanted you to be proud of me.” His father squeezed his shoulder gently and replied, “Son, I’ve always been proud of you, every step of the way.” Jason smiled, feeling a weight lifted off his shoulders, knowing that his father’s love and support had been there all along.
