第一节 判断型阅读(跨学科·化学)
Chemical reactions(化学反应) make for some great experiments. You can make use of the CO2(carbon dioxide) given off by the reaction between baking soda(小苏打) and lemon juice to blow up your balloon!
What you'll need:
★A balloon.
★About 40 ml of water(a cup is about 250 ml,so you don't need much).
★Soft drink bottle.
★Juice from a lemon.
★1 teaspoon of baking soda.
Instructions:
★Before you begin, make sure that you pull the balloon long to make it as easy as possible to blow up.
★Put the 40ml of water into the soft drink bottle.
★Add the baking soda and mix it with water.
★Put the lemon juice in and quickly put the balloon over the mouth of the bottle.
What's happening
If all goes well, then your balloon should inflate! Adding the lemon juice to the baking soda creates a chemical reaction and produces CO2.The gas rises up and escapes(溢出) through the soft drink bottle. It doesn't,however, escape(逃离) the balloon, pushing it outwards and blowing it up.
( )1.You need a teaspoon of baking soda for the experiment.
( )2.You should heat the water before the experiment.
( )3.After adding lemon juice to the mixture,we can slowly put the balloon on the bottle mouth.
( )4.We can infer that the balloon inflates because CO2 fills it instead of escaping.
( )5.The passage is mainly to describe an experiment.

Chicken eggs are just thin shells(壳),but you may be surprised at how strong they are.Let's do an experiment.
What you need
Four eggs Sharp scissors Tape(胶带)
A bowl An adult helper
Phone books or hardcover books
What you do
Dig a hole in the small end of each egg and make it larger to pour the eggs into the bowl.Give the eggs to your helper—they are good for cooking.Wash and dry the shells.
Stick the tape around each egg's widest point;carefully break away shells between the tape and the hole.
Put the shells in a square at the four corners of the piece of paper, with the round end of the egg on top.
Add more books and see how strong the eggshells are.
What has happened
Eggshells are strong because they work the same way as an arch(拱门).Put weight on one place, and the curving(弯曲的) shell spreads the force(力) all around the egg.The strong walls of the shell support the weak point.
( )16.How many kinds of things are needed in the experiment
A.Six.
B.Five.
C.Four.
D.Three.
B
( )17.What is the right order of steps in the eggshell experiment according to the text

A.Pi is always the same.
B.People didn't know how to calculate circles.
C.The day is celebrated in different ways.
D.To keep it simple, people say Pi's number is 3.14.
E.He was known for working out the value of Pi(π).
F.The physicist Larry Shaw thought Pi Day was unimportant.
G.Since Pi is 3.14, he decided March 14th would be the perfect day.
Zu Chongzhi was one of the greatest mathematicians in ancient China.21. 1Pi is a special number. It's a long number used to calculate(计算) circles. It's so special that people celebrate it every year.
Pi is a number that goes on forever. It has over ten trillion decimal places(十万亿个小数位).22. 1

This is how you calculate Pi.You take the circumference(周长C) of a circle. Then you divide it by the diameter(直径D).The symbol for Pi is π.And we know π = C÷D in math.23. 1It doesn't matter how small or big the circle is.
The first Pi Day was celebrated on March 14th,1988.A physicist named Larry Shaw wanted to celebrate Pi on a certain day.24. 1So he celebrated the day with his friends. They sat around in a circle and ate fruit pies.In 2009,the US government recognized March 14th as national Pi Day.
