Unit 6 When was it invented
It is said that a Chinese ruler called Shen Nong first discovered tea as a drink.
句型It is said that... (1) People say that...(2)... be said to do sth. It is believed / reported / known / suggested / supposed that...,意为分别为“人们相信”、“据报道”、“众所周知的是”、“人们建议”、“据推测”。 It is +adj. / n. / done + that从句
e.g. It is said that Tom has a big company.
= People say that Tom has a big company.
= Tom is said to have a big company.
It is believed that the first basketball game in history was played on December21, 1891.
It was decided that we should start the project next week.
It well-known that China is an old country with a 5000-year history.
It is our duty that we should tidy the classroom before we leave school.
The tea trade from China to Western countries took place in the 19the century.
不及物动词和短语动词没有被动形式,受中文思维影响,以下动词常常出错:happen, take place, rise, belong to, run out, come true, come up(提出,想出), lie, come out(出版), go out(熄灭)
e.g. A great idea came up at the meeting. His latest movie is coming out soon.
Great changes have taken place in the last 40 years. Time has run out.
e.g. Good medicine tastes bitter. The flower smells sweet.
The plan proved practical.
e.g. My house needs / wants / requires repairing and painting.
The book is well worth reading twice.
e.g. The book sells well. The pen writes well.
The clothes wash easily. Your article reads smoothly.
Today, the popularity of basketball has risen around the world, with many young people dreaming of becoming famous players.
with + n. / pron. + adj
e.g. It is strange that the general sleeps with his eyes open. She stood up, with her face red.
with + n. / pron.
e.g. The teacher came in with a book in his hand.
with + n. / pron.
e.g. I found it difficult to fall asleep with a heavy rainstorm happening outside.
I ended the class with all the students singing an English song.
with + n. / pron.
e.g. The criminal ran away with his hands still tied.
(5) with + n. / pron. + to do,其中to do发生在谓语动词后,即将要发生。
e.g. With so many things to deal with, we put off the trip.
(6). with + n. / pron. + 小副词,常见的小副词是on, off, over等
e.g. With the meal over, we all went home. I can’t sleep with the light on.
He was standing there with nothing on when I found him.
How old do you think I am
e.g. Do you know who is the right person for the job
Who do you think is the right person for the job
Can you help me think of an invitation — Withe pleasure.
with pleasure意为“我很乐意”,相当于I’m glad to或No problem,表示“很高兴帮助某人”的含义。而my pleasure是It’s my pleasure的省略,意思是“不用谢”,用来回答thank you.
My pleasure / You’re welcome / That’s OK/ That’s all right / Not at all / Don’t mention it.
It doesn’t matter / Never mind / That’s OK / That’s all right / Not at all.
It’s my treat. Not yet! So what 所以呢?
Like what 比如说呢? Got it!
I didn’t mean it. Better not.
No wonder. Go ahead. Believe it or not.
How come 怎么会呢? It couldn’t be better. What for 为什么呢?
This is because sometimes a few people may invent things which are nearly the same.
e.g. My idea is that we should begin our work right now.
The question is whether we can finish the job on time.
That is why books or websites usually mention more than one inventor.
The reason why she is ill is that she ate bad meat.
It was exactly what I needed.
Some people doubt whether the inventor came up with the idea himself or herself.
e.g. I doubt if the new one will be any better. I never doubted that she would come.
I'm not sure if I’m pronouncing this word correctly. Are you sure that he will come

Dear editor,
I am writing to ask what has happened to our young people. They are not as polite or hard-working as my generation (一代人). I will give you two examples.
Last Friday, I got on the underground at 9:15 a.m. It was very crowded so there was no free seat. There were some boys sitting on the seats near me. I didn't know why they were not at school. They were talking and laughing loudly. It was difficult for me to read my newspaper with all the noise. At the next stop, a pregnant (怀孕的) woman and her daughter got on with lots of shopping bags. I expected the boys to let them sit down. They saw the woman but they did nothing. I had to ask them to give the woman and her daughter seats. They did so but gave me a rude look. I got off at the next stop and was glad that the teenagers didn’t follow me.
Last Saturday, I had dinner with my friend's family. I was glad to see his children, who I hadn't seen for ten years. During the dinner, I started talking about world politics with the children. It soon became clear that they didn't know much about it. They couldn't tell me the name of the King of Spain or President of Italy. All they knew about was the Internet or which singers were the most beautiful. In my days, students knew the kings, the queens and the presidents of every country in Europe.
I worry about the future of Germany. How could these young people become good workers and parents They sit around Mcdonald's after school instead of going to the library as I did at their age. Maybe they have too much money. Perhaps some readers can give us some ideas about what to do with this "lost generation".
Yours sincerely,
Frantz Vogts
( ) 36. Mr Vogts writes this letter to the editor to ______.
A. show how rude the teenagers are B. complain about young people's act
C. show teenagers are lazy D. express his worry about Germany's future
( ) 37. When Mr Vogts met the boys on the underground, he ______.
A. knew he wouldn't get a seat B. didn't know why they were not at school
C. felt he would be in trouble D. expected they would get off at the next stop
( ) 38. Mr Vogts was disappointed at the dinner because ______.
A. The children didn't like him B. the children knew much about the Internet
C. his friend knew little about world politics D. the children knew little about world politics
( ) 39. By saying "lost generation", Mr Vogts refers to ______.
A. today's workers B. the people at his age
C. today's young people D. the young people who are poor
( ) 40. Which of the following is Not True
A. The writer is probably a German.
B. The writer used to read when he was young.
C. The boys didn’t give the seats to the pregnant woman and her daughter.
D. The writer gave two examples to support his worry.
