Two elderly sisters whose collection of newspapers almost filled their small home are in stable condition in hospital after they were buried for several hours, because the papers suddenly fell down.
Police said Eva Collins, 82, and her sister, Margaret Wentworth, 79 had thousands of newspapers dating back to the 1960s in their semi-detached home they shared on Roderland road.
“They were piled nearly to the ceiling,” Sergeant Alex Dunganon said, “The sisters had made a series of tunnels among the papers through which they could only move on hands and kneels to their various rooms. When the women were moving from their living room to their kitchen Saturday, the accident happened.”
“The collapse(垮塌) sounded like an avalanche(雪崩)like the whole house was coming down,” said neighbor Tom Francis, who lived next door to them. Francis rushed to them, but he was not able to reach the women. It took the firefighters and police officials several hours to rescue them, working through unsafe piles of newspapers.
“There are tons of them,” said Dunganon. “It may sound funny now, but a dangerous situation. Their neighbors said the sisters were friendly and normal, but they had never invited anyone inside their home. A hospital official said the women suffered some injuries.
