Even if there’s so much about English that can be learned from a book or even in a traditional classroom setting, a lot of the language can still be learned best in more relaxing situations where students are having fun. Here are some suggestions.
★Communicate with strangers. If you live in an area filled with English speakers, get students out of the classroom. Put them among other English speakers. Students may not speak to strangers, but they will know how the words they learned are used. For example, they’ll hear conversations taking place and may begin to understand how the words learned in the classroom are actually used in everyday speech.
★Let their guard down. One difficult thing for English learners is believing in themselves. Fun activities, especially those outside of the classroom, give students a chance to feel relaxed. They will speak more freely.
★Make use of English media (媒体). Most recorded language instruction is pretty boring and students will get tired when hearing the same voice repeat the same phrases. You can let students go to a movie in English. They will hear common expressions and more everyday conversations in the movie.

How to Ask Questions in English
A good conversation happens when two people ask right questions and then give proper answers. Let’s take a look at four different kinds of questions that will improve your English conversation skills.
Number One: The Open-ended Question
An open-ended question is a question that cannot be answered with “yes” or “no”. An open-ended question allows you to learn more information.
Number Two: The Follow-up Question
A follow-up question is something that is done to continue. When it comes to conversations, a follow-up question depends on what the other person already said. You need to listen to the person’s answer to your first question in order to ask a good follow-up question. Follow-up questions keep the conversation moving.
Number Three: The Clarifying (澄清的) Question
You need to ask a clarifying question in two situations. The first one: when you don’t hear the information clearly. The second one: when you are having trouble understanding what the other person said.
Number Four: The Superlative (最高级的) Question
Examples of these types of adjectives are “best” “worst” “least” and “most”. Superlative questions use these words and are great conversation starters. Questions like “What is the best trip you’ve ever taken ” or “Which place in your hometown is the most beautiful ” really let you learn more about the person you’re having a conversation with.
5.When does a good conversation happen
6.What does an open-ended question allow you to do
7.What does a follow-up question depend on
8.When will you ask a clarifying question (Please write one point mentioned in the text. )
9.What can you learn from the passage

As the “Double Reduction Policy” was introduced in China, students are encouraged to take part in more after-class activities. Some students were invited to an interview about after-class activities by the local English newspaper in Guangzhou to share their opinions. The following is what they said in the interview.
Susie (a 15-year-old girl): In our school, after-class activities are very popular. With less homework now, students in our school have more time to enjoy many different kinds of after-class activities, such as the English corner, swimming, playing the piano and singing. I take part in the chess club. I play with other club members after class every day.
Tracy (a 14-year-old girl): I’m a member of the music club in our school. I can learn different kinds of musical instruments, including the violin, the piano and the guitar and so on. I like playing the piano best because it’s very interesting.
Eric (a 13-year-old boy): I take part in the poetry club after class. I have learnt a lot from the activities which are held by the club. I can not only improve my skill of poem writing, but also make a lot of new friends with those who have the same hobbies.
Mike (a 14-year-old boy): Some teachers think after-class activities take up too much time. In their opinions, we are already under great pressure with too much homework to do. But I think it’s necessary to have some after-class activities. They can provide us with a chance to develop our other skills besides what we are taught in class. What’s more, after-class activities can help us relax.

17.Why does Tracy like playing the piano best

Money is very important in our life. We use money to buy food, clothes, books and other things we need. But do you know how to use money wisely
Long ago, people did not use money. They traded goods directly. For example, they used a cow to trade for some sheep. Later, people began to use shell money, metal coins and paper money. Today, we have many new ways to pay. We can pay in cash, by credit card, or by mobile phone. It is very convenient for us to pay everywhere in China.
As students, we have pocket money from parents or relatives. But many students don’t know how to manage it well. They spend too much money on snacks, toys or games. They often buy things they don’t need. That’s not a good habit.
Here are some good ways to save money and manage pocket money. First, make a shopping list before you go shopping. Don’t buy anything that is not on the list. Second, save a little money every week or every month. You can put it in a piggy bank or a bank. Third, cut down unnecessary expenses. Don’t eat out too often. Try to eat at home. Turn off the lights when you leave the room to save electricity.
Saving money is a good life skill. It helps us learn to be patient and careful with money. It also helps us get ready for the future. If we have a good plan for pocket money, we will not waste money. We can use money to do more useful things, like buying books, helping others or traveling.
All in all, money is important, but using money wisely is more important. Let’s learn to save money and make good plans for our pocket money.

On November 16, 2024, Evan Kail arrived in China, greeted by the warm smiles of the Chinese people. In the eyes of the Chinese, he has become a symbol of friendship and justice.
Before this visit, Evan became well-known in China. He discovered an old photo album (相册). To his surprise, the album was filled with pictures that described a very important part of Chinese history — the difficult times during World War II. Selflessly, he donated this precious album to the Chinese Consulate — General in Chicago (中国驻芝加哥总领事馆). To express thanks for his kind deed, the consulate presented him with a national porcelain (国瓷) gift, an honor only shared by greats like John Rabe (拉贝) and Norman Bethune (白求恩).
Evan’s journey in China had clear aims. Culturally, he looked forward to experiencing the unique charm of China. Historically, during his one-month tour, he planned to visit famous cities in China, such as Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Nanjing, which are rich in relevant history and hold great appeal for him .
In Beijing, Evan had an amazing experience. One cold morning, he made his way to Tian’anmen Square for the raising of the national flag. People recognized him in the crowd. A kind-hearted young man from Huai’an, Jiangsu Province, saw Evan shivering (哆嗦) and offered him his military overcoat (军大衣). This simple yet moving act deeply touched Evan.
Evan Kail’s China journey was filled with such heart-warming moments. It not only strengthened the cultural bond between the two countries but also reminded (提醒) us that it is important to respect history, uphold justice, be kind-hearted, and promote international friendship.

In-person travel vs online travel:
Which do you prefer
In today’s world, people have two popular ways to explore the world: in-person travel and online travel. Both let you discover new places, but they are quite different.
In-person travel means visiting places in person. You can walk on historic streets, smell local snacks, and talk to local people. For example, if you go to Suzhou’s gardens, you can touch the stone bridges and feel the cool wind from the lakes. It usually takes time and money; you might need to book trains or hotels. But it gives you real feelings and memories you can keep forever.
Online travel, however, is done through the internet. You can use apps or websites to take virtual (虚拟) tours. With just a click, you can “walk” around the Forbidden City in Beijing or “visit” the Eiffel Tower in Paris at home. It’s cheap and easy—you don’t need to pack bags or wait in lines. But you can’t feel the sun on your face or taste the delicious food there.
Many students like both ways. Zhang Wei, an eighth-grader, loves in-person travel. “Last year, I went to Yangzhou. I tried Yangzhou fried rice and talked to an old craftsman. It’s nothing like looking at pictures online,” he said. But his classmate Liu Mei enjoys online travel more. “I can easily ‘visit’ many museums right after finishing homework. It helps me learn about the world when I’m busy,” she explained.
Whether you choose in-person travel or online travel, the most important thing is to open your eyes and enjoy the journey of discovery.

Sept 27 is World Tourism Day. You might prepare to take a trip with your family during the coming National Day holiday. Will it be a “laid-back tourism (摆烂式旅游)”, or a “healing retreat (疗愈之旅)” The choices seem never-ending.
But did you know that not long ago, many Chinese people traveled by just following tour guides and taking photos So why have so many new travel ways appeared in just a few years
There are many reasons. For one, young people don’t like fixed (固定的) plans anymore. They like to explore, especially less-visited places better. Some even go to small towns for music festivals, choosing personal interests over popular places.
Many also start trips without any plans, enjoying surprises along the way. A growing focus on feelings also plays a role, according to People’s Daily. “Just visiting” is not enough anymore. People want immersive (沉浸的) experiences, like joining local activities or relaxing by a campfire.
At the same time, businesses and local governments are also introducing different policies (政策) to attract tourists. China’s tourism market is still changing quickly. Will you be the one to start the next trend (潮流)

More and more young Chinese travelers are choosing a new style of vacation called “slow travel”. Instead of rushing to see famous landmarks, they want to experience local life closely. They prefer meaningful experiences, like living like a local for a few days. A report shows that over half of young people in China prefer this style. They also like to travel independently (独立地) and explore special, less-crowded places.
My trip to Quanzhou was different. I didn’t rush between hot places. Instead, I walked into narrow alleys (狭窄的小巷), and enjoyed nanyin—one of China’s oldest musical forms. I just wanted to see how the locals live. That everyday feeling was much more interesting to me than taking photos at popular places. For me, the most memorable part of my trip to Sanya wasn’t a famous landmark. It was the simple feeling of walking along the beach at sunrise, feeling the seawater wash over my feet. Sometimes, I would just sit on the sand, doing nothing but clearing my mind. Those quiet moments were the most special.
Some young travelers are taking it a step further with “volunteer tourism (义工旅行)”. They join local projects to help the community while they travel. For example, in Guizhou, groups of young travelers formed “cultural recording teams”. They helped elderly villagers write down their life stories, recorded traditional sewing (缝纫) skills, and even helped locals set up small online museums. This allows them to lose themselves deeply and give something back.

According to a report, Chinese tourism now has a new way to attract (吸引) visitors: creating emotional value. In short, emotional value is the joy and happiness we feel from experiences, not just from getting things. It’s about laughing with friends, enjoying fresh air, and creating memories. That’s why activities like digging clams (蛤蜊) in seaside cities are so popular.
Rizhao is a city in Shandong Province. It became famous during the May Day holiday this year for the great emotional value it offered to tourists. The “Dragon King’s Treasure” Clam Festival was a huge success. People there put 1,500 kilograms of clams across the tidal flats (潮滩) every day during the holiday. Tourists could dig these clams. Besides, the local government set up a special bus line to the clam-digging area and offered leaflets (传单) about how to dig and cook clams.
To improve the holiday experience, some tour guides dressed up as characters from Chinese folk stories, like Ao Bing and the Dragon Maiden (龙女). They introduced seafood, cooking skills, and local customs of Rizhao. Many people praised the city for these creative ideas.
For tourists in Rizhao, digging clams wasn’t just a fresh activity. It was a chance to enjoy nature, learn about local culture, and experience the old way of life. This made their trips more enjoyable and meaningful. “We got to enjoy the treasures of nature. More importantly, we learned about the rich local culture. It was a fantastic experience!” said a tourist.

50.What did some tour guides in Rizhao do

Money doesn’t grow on trees. As kids, we don’t often think about where money comes from. We need to know that our parents work hard to make money, and that it may be used up one day. Going to their workplaces to watch how they work is a great way to understand money is not that easy to make.
We shouldn’t spend all our money in one go. It’s important for us to have a budget (预算). In other words, we need to think about how much money we have and what we really want to spend it on. Realising that our pocket money can’t cover everything we want, we should make smart spending choices.
We should set a clear goal and watch our money grow. If we wish to own a new bicycle but can’t afford it, we can save our pocket money. How Write down how much money we have in a notebook and watch it grow. After we have enough, we can buy that wonderful bicycle we’ve dreamed about! Reaching our goal will greatly satisfy us.
We can talk with our parents about how money is used and where money goes. Do you know what a bank account (账户) is If not, communicate with your parents. We can also go to the supermarket with our parents to experience how money is spent in the real world.
Without doubt, we should treat money in a right way. Actually, learning about money isn’t a hard job. From these lessons, we can get a sense of money management and right money values step by step!

Hi, Li Liang, When our friends get cool things, we often want them too. But we don’t really need them. Think hard before buying. If you really want it, talk to your mom about how much you want it. She may have ideas on how you can make and save money for it. Maybe you can start by doing chores or little jobs. This can help you save money to buy the bike and still save for college. You can also look for a used bike. This might be cheaper (更便宜的) but still fun to ride. I love cycling, too, but I think I don’t need to get my own bike. 16-year-old Zhen Xin is a high school student from Beijing. In August, 2023, she finished the Five Great Mountains Challenge in only five days. What makes her different is that she became the youngest person to do it.
The Five Great Mountains Challenge is about climbing China’s five greatest mountains—Taishan Mountain in Shandong, Huashan Mountain in Shaanxi, Songshan Mountain in Henan, Hengshan Mountain in Shanxi, and Hengshan Mountain in Hunan—in 100 days.
Zhen always likes climbing and hiking in her free time, but she has fears sometimes. Because of the hot August weather, she did most of her hiking at night. “When you can’t see what’s coming next, many of your fears and worries go away. You’re less likely to back down,” Zhen explained. Zhen said the key to hiking is one’s mind. Whenever she felt afraid, she would reward (奖励) herself with a drink or some snacks.
Of all the mountains she climbed, Huashan Mountain stood out as her favourite because of its smaller roads to the top of the mountains. “They’re more dangerous than those of the other four mountains,” she said. But instead of making her afraid, the challenge improved her concentration (专注力).
Zhen also said the most difficult hike was climbing Taishan Mountain. It was because of the largest tourist rush. “We could only move up one step every five minutes or so,” she said.
Zhen decided to climb the five great mountains when she finished high school. “I wanted something that would allow me to truly see my growth and changes over time. As I grow older, I want something to share with others,” she said.

Reading plays an important role in our life, especially in learning English. For middle school students, reading is the best way to improve writing skills. When we read English articles, stories or newspapers, we can meet many new words and useful sentences. We can also learn how writers organize their ideas and how to use proper grammar.
Many students don’t like reading because they think it is boring. But if we choose the right reading materials, such as interesting stories, simple news or school articles, reading can be very fun. Before reading, we can think about what we want to get from the passage. During reading, we can underline important sentences or take small notes. After reading, we can try to retell the main idea or write a short diary using the new words we learned.
Reading for writing is not hard. We just need to keep reading every day. Even 15 to 20 minutes a day can make a big difference. Over time, we will find it much easier to write English articles. Our vocabulary will become richer, and our sentences will be more beautiful. Reading not only helps with writing but also opens our eyes to the world.

Protecting Ourselves in the Earthquake
Earthquakes happen all the time around the world. Sometimes they are just too small for people to feel. But when a serious earthquake happens, it can be very sudden and dangerous. Luckily, here are some safety tips for you to follow.
To begin with, you must know where to hide. If you are indoors, hide under a strong desk and hang on to its legs. Or you can sit in the corner of the rooms. If you are outdoors, find an open area and stay away from trees and power lines. In this way, you can keep off danger more easily.
Besides, always prepare an emergency kit at home. In the kit, you should keep enough food and water, a flashlight, a knife, a strong rope, and other useful things. Being prepared may help save your life.
Most importantly, as students, you need to take part in the safety training at school. It can help you put your knowledge into practice. For example, when the strong shaking stops, you should not move around right away. Sometimes, there will be some aftershocks, and they can be quite dangerous, too.
No one expects to experience an earthquake, but no one knows whether they will have the bad luck. So, to increase our chance of surviving the natural disaster, we must always be prepared.

John Dancer always travelled together with Charlie. One night John and Charlie arrived at a hotel.
“Good evening, sir,” said the receptionist (接待员) when John arrived at the hotel. Then he saw Charlie.
“Sir, you’re welcome to stay, but we don’t allow pets here. Sorry!” he explained.
“Charlie isn’t a pet,” said John. “He’s my eyes. I’m blind, and it’s hard for me to get around by myself. I need him to show me where to go.” The receptionist said sorry to John and led John and Charlie to their room.
It was late. John was very tired after a long day. He went to bed and soon fell asleep (睡着). Charlie was sleeping beside the bed. Suddenly, Charlie started barking (犬吠). John woke up and smelt smoke. A fire! Smoke started to come in from under the door. John knew they couldn’t get out that way now. Their room was on the 8th floor, so they couldn’t climb out of the window. They had to do something to stop the smoke. With Charlie’s help, John put some wet clothes along the bottom (底部) of the door. Then he got down on the floor next to Charlie and waited. The minutes seemed like hours. Then he heard it—the sound of a fire engine (消防车). It was music to his ears.

It was supposed (料想) to be a usual weekend trip—hiking in the hills, then going back home before 5:00 p.m. But at noon, dark clouds gathered and snow began to fall. “How strange!” Dad said. “The weather report said it would be a nice day.”
Soon, the snow turned heavy and strong winds blew. Thick fog mixed with snowflakes (雪花) made it hard to see ahead. My sister fell down and her leg was seriously hurt. She cried and couldn’t move. Mom held her close to keep her warm. We realized that it wasn’t just bad weather but a disaster. Dad quickly called 120 for help. Then he told me, “My son, listen. I’ll go down the hill to meet the ambulance (救护车). You must stay here and take good care of your mom and sister.” I nodded and took out blankets, put them around everyone to keep us warm. “Dad will be back soon,” Mom said, though she looked worried.
Two hours passed. A flashlight beam (光线) cut through the fog. “Dad! We are here!” I shouted excitedly. “Good boy! We are safe now.” The workers helped to carry my sister into the ambulance.

Floods are becoming more common, and it’s a big problem for the whole world. As cities get larger and more land is covered with concrete (混凝土), less water can be taken into the ground. If the rain is too heavy and the sewage systems (排水系统) can not hold all the water, floods may happen easily.
In 2013, Chinese designer Yu Kongjian came up with the idea of “sponge cities”. These cities are designed to work like a sponge. They can take in water like a sponge and help reduce the sudden floods.
In 2015, China started a national plan. The government chose some cities as “Sponge City” pilots (试点). Wuhan is one of them. In the city, water can pass through the road. There are also gardens, ponds and wetlands all over the city. When it rains, they can take in water quickly. This has helped reduce floods there.
Other cities around the world are also trying similar ideas. Auckland in New Zealand has built green parks along rivers. These parks can take in extra (额外的) water during heavy rain. Amsterdam in the Netherlands collects rainwater by using “green roofs” on buildings. These roofs, with grass and small plants, can not only take in rainwater, but also store and clean the water for daily use with the help of smart systems.

A Dream Comes True
As a young girl, I always wanted to fly a plane, but back then it was almost impossible for a woman to do that.
A taste of flying came at last in 2001. I got a chance to ride in a hot air balloon on my birthday. But it was not as exciting as I expected. We went up directly high in the air and right back down moving around very low.
Later, I wished I could skydive (特技跳伞) some day! So when I heard there was a chance to let my dream come true, I decided to take it.
However, my children were very nervous about it. They asked me to talk things over with my doctor before that. When I told the doctor what I was planning to do, he said, “An 84-year-old woman like you could break bones during the landing.” But all this could not stop me from having a try and flying into the air.
On June 11, 2013, I went up in a plane with my coach (教练). When it reached13, 000 feet high in the sky—a good enough height for skydiving, we threw ourselves out of the plane. When we first hit the air, the wind was very strong. But after a short while, it became better. We were in a free fall for about a minute. Then we opened the parachute (降落伞) and just floated downward for about four minutes. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I have ever felt, much better than from the hot air balloon.
“Don’t stop living just because you are too old” is what I’d like to say, “If there’s something you want to experience, go for it. If it’s something that is possible, make it happen.”
97.What did the writer think of her first hot air balloon
98.Why did the writer want to try skydiving at her age
99.What did the writer enjoy most when she was skydiving
100.If you were the writer, would you try skydiving Why or why not

92.根据第一段首句“Floods are becoming more common, and it’s a big problem for the whole world.”可知,洪水变得愈发常见,这是整个世界面临的大问题。故填Floods are becoming more common./Floods are becoming more common, and it’s a big problem for the whole world./Floods.
93.根据第二段“These cities are designed to work like a sponge. They can take in water like a sponge and help reduce the sudden floods.”可知,“海绵城市”能像海绵一样吸收水分,并有助于减少突发的洪水。故填They (Sponge cities/“Sponge cities”) can take in water and help reduce the sudden floods.
94.根据第三段“In 2015, China started a national plan. The government chose some cities as ‘Sponge City’ pilots (试点).”可知,中国在2015年启动了“海绵城市”试点计划。故填China started its “Sponge City” pilot plan in 2015./In 2015.

Working with nature is the key to fighting against floods and building a better future./Working with nature and technology makes cities better and safer.

98.第三段与第四段体现了作者的动机:她从小渴望飞行,热气球体验未达预期,便希望通过特技跳伞实现梦想,答案是对原文“let my dream come true”的概括总结。
99.第五段末尾直接描述了跳伞时的感受“Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I have ever felt, much better than from the hot air balloon”,这是作者最享受的部分,属于原文直接提取信息。
100.本题是开放性试题,答案不唯一,需结合文章主旨与个人看法作答。若认同作者,可围绕“追求梦想、勇敢尝试”展开;若不认同,可从“安全风险、年龄因素”等角度说明理由,合理即可。
