Introduction
T: Hello everyone! Welcome to my English Class. In today’s class, we'll learn Unit 2 “Valuable Values”, to understand the power of making good use of money . Through a series of stories , we'll explore the proper money management and the essence of financial wisdom.
T: By the end of the class, you will be able to...
T: First, understand the structure of the passage and master the financial concept of four jars;
T: Second, recognize the importance of financial management and make more responsible financial decisions;
T; Last, reflect on the value of financial management and express proper financial ideas and plans.
Step 1 Lead - in
T: Now, boys and girls, please look at this chart and then answer my questions.
T: The first question is “What are the top three things students from this school spend their money on?”
T: The second question is “What else do you think students often spend their money on?”
T: You can think about them, and then I will share my answers with you.
T: OK, time’s up. Let me share my answer with you.
T: In this chart, we can see that the top three things students from this school spend their money on are “books and magazines”, “school supplies” and “clothes”.
T: Besides these things, I think students often spend their money on electronic products, travelling, transport and so on.
T: Now, please think about what you spend your money on. Draw a chart to show your spending habits. Here is an example you can follow.
T: Do you complete the chart? Yes, I believe each of you has different answer. As a high school student, I know that you really want to manage our money well, but it is often difficult for you to find the right way and establish your own view of money. And next, we will learn a passage to help you solve these problems.
Step 2 Pre - reading
T: OK now, let’s look at the title and the pictures of this passage. Can you predict what the passage talks about?
S: It may talks about how can we make good use of money and make a big difference to our life.
T: And then can you tell me the meaning of this title? In this title, “valuable” means “very useful”, and “values” means “beliefs about what’s right and wrong or what’s important in our lives”, so the title means “useful rules or beliefs on how you spend your precious things”.
T: Boys and girls, don’t you think this title is very interesting? Yes, it uses the different forms of the same word. It is a kind of wordplay.
T: Wordplay uses the sounds and meanings of similar words in an amusing or clever way, for example: I was trying to discover how lightning worked, and then it struck me! It can also be used to reinforce the meanings of themes: in the title The importance of Being Earnest, "Earnest" is an adjective as well as a character's name.
Step 3 While - reading
Fast reading
T: Now, let’s look at the article we are going to learn today. At first , please read the article quickly and match each part with its main idea.
Para 1 A. An example to make good use of money
Para 2 B. Raising the question
Para 3-8 C. Conclusion
Para 9 D. Four jars to teach teenagers how to spend money wisely
T: OK, time’s up. Let’s share the answers together. The main idea of paragraph 1 is B, “Raising the question”. Let’s go on. Paragraph 2, A, “An example to make good use of money”. Paragraph 3-8, D, “Four jars to teach teenagers how to spend money wisely”. Paragraph 9, C, “Conclusion”.
Careful reading
T: OK, after all the preparation, let’s read the passage carefully. First of all, let’s read the paragraph 1 and answer these two questions:
Q1: What question does the author raise?
Q2: What kind of teens do “some” and “others” refer to?
T: OK, let’s stop here. I believe that you must get the right answer. Can you tell me your answer?
T: For the first question, what question does the author raise?
S1: The question is “What to do with their money?”
T: Good! Let’s go on. For the second question, what kind of teens do “some” and “others” refer to?
S2: “Some” refers to those who can’t make good use of money, and “others” refers to teens who can make good use of money.
T: It is fantastic, right? Now, let’s continue to read the paragraph 2 and think about this question:
T: What were “Kare Bags” made for?
T: OK, did you get the answer?
S: They are made for the homeless people.
T: Did you notice the name of the bag? Yes, “Kare Bags”. It equals to “Care Bags”.
T: After reading these two paragraphs, let’s have a look how do teens handle their money. Please fill in the blanks.
T: OK, can you tell me your answer?
S1: The first one, more and more teenagers maxed out their parents’ credit cards.
T: Great! How about the next one?
S2: In the paragraph 2, Khloe Thompson made and gave away “Kare Bags” including necessities, which were bought with her pocket money and crowd funding.
T: Now, let’s continue to read the paragraph 3 to 8, and then answer my questions.
T: After reading this part, can you tell me what’s Jerry Witkovsky’s method? Yes, Jerry gave four jars to teach teenagers how to spend money wisely.
T: The next question, why did Jerry give four jars to his grandchildren as their birthday presents?
S: We can find the answer in paragraph 4, “he is giving them the opportunity to learn lifelong values”.
T: Now, let’s have a look at the four jars and finish the mind map. I’d like to invite some students to tell me your answers.
T: Let’s look at the first jar - spending jar. We can find the answer in paragraph 5. Can you tell me your answer?
S1: You are responsible for your own happiness. Money gives you independence and the opportunity to buy something you like.
T: Great, thank you! Let’s go on. For the saving jar, we can find the answer in paragraph 6. Who can tell me your answer?
S2: It gives you a vision for the future. This could involve saving for university or saving for that special something you’ve seen in the stores.
T: Excellent! You did a good job! Let’s go on. For the third jar - investing jar, we can find the answer in paragraph 7. Who wants to have a try? Yes, you please.
S3: It represents a vision for the future and the opportunity to build for the future. In addition to putting money aside for university education, it also means investing in yourself.
T: OK, here comes to the last jar - giving jar. I will show you my answer. It is all about kindness and helping. Whoever or whatever the recipient, it’s your money to give to whatever cause you believe in.
T: Fantastic! You have found all the answers!
T: Finally, we have only one paragraph to read. After reading the paragraph 9, please finish the choice question.
Which of the following is not the aims of the jars?
To inspire teenagers to evaluate money objectively.
To make teenagers understand the value of money.
To help teenagers to choose to use money wisely.
To make teenagers save money as much as possible.
T: Yes, the answer is D. The essence of these jars lies not just in financial management but in fostering a correct perspective towards money. By appreciating and practising these values, you can grow into individuals to make wise decisions, and make a difference to others.
Think and share
T: OK, now, after reading this passage, please look at these four questions in our book.
T: You can think about it and then I will show you my answer.
T: For the first question, the author uses the example to prove age is no barrier to making good use of money.
T: For the second question, I’d like to ask a student to share his or her answer. Yes, you please.
S1: Before reading the passage, I spent money without any plan. From now on, I will learn to be a wise consumer.
T: Good job! I like your answer! Now, if you were given 1000 yuan, how much money would you put in each jar?
S2: For me, I’d like to put 40% of money in spending jar, 30% money in saving jar, 15% money in investing jar and 15% money in giving jar.
T: Great! That’s a proper choice! And what methods of self-management have you learnt in the two reading passages in this unit? What else do you need to improve?
S3: I've learned that we should use the money we get wisely. I think what I need to improve is not to spend all my money in one go, but to spend it wisely.
T: Well done!
Step 4 Post - reading
T: OK, now. After reading this passage, let’s look at the activity 4 in our book.
T: Please read the passage again and think about which jar you believe is the most important, you can organise your ideas by completing the notes.
T: Now, can you share your answers with me?
S1: I like the Saving jar. I've been saving some money from birthday gifts for college. It might not be a lot, but it teaches me the importance of looking ahead. To me, saving means preparing for the future.
T: Great! I believe you will achieve your goal! Who’s the next one? Yes, you please.
S2: The Giving jar is important. Helping at a local shelter showed me how small acts of kindness can make a big difference. It's not just about giving money, but about giving hope and help. That's why it's so valuable to me.
T: Oh, you are so kind! OK, the last one. Yes, you please.
S3: I find the Investing jar most valuable. I used some money to learn how to code online, which helped me do better in class and even earn a bit by making websites. Investing in skills can pay off in many ways, not just with money.
T: Oh, you have a long-term vision!
Step 5 Summary
T: Boys and girls, as we conclude today's lesson, remember that money, in its essence, is a tool. It's a means to an end, not the end itself. The real wealth lies in the values we hold and the positive actions we take. Khloe Thompson and Jerry Witkovsky have shown us how financial resources, combined with compassion, foresight, and generosity, can lead to colorful lives, not just for oneself but for the community at large.
Step 6 Assessment
T: How do you think your performance today? You can make a self-assessment with this checklist.
