Last Sunday, my family decided to go camping. So we needed to buy some things. My dad wanted to buy a tent and a pair of hiking shoes. My mom needed some food and drinks. I wanted a new camera to take photos of the beautiful scenery.
First, we went to the shopping mall. The hiking shoes were on sale—they were 50% off. My dad bought a black pair for 180 yuan. Then we went to the supermarket. My mom bought three bottles of water, two kilos of apples, a packet of bread and some chicken. I looked for a camera in the electronic shop, but they were too expensive. My mom said, “Why not buy one online? It’s cheaper.” I thought it was a good idea.

As we all know, “No pain, no gain”. That’s a perfect saying for Lai Shixiong, an excellent English learner from China, to describe his experience of learning English well.
Like many speakers who are not from English-speaking countries, Lai failed when he first started learning English. When he was in high school, he once got a very low mark of 7 in an English test. The full mark was 100. He almost gave up English but after he entered a military school (军校), he met a classmate who was good at English.
Lai was surprised by his classmate’s great spoken English, so he decided to start learning English from the beginning. As he wrote down his experience in the diary, “I saw myself as a baby who had just started to learn a language.” To correct his pronunciation, Lai listened to records and practiced phonetic symbols (音标) hundreds of times every day. Then he was able to pronounce words, Lai said he began to practice conversations. Not being able to find someone to practice with, Lai created a learning atmosphere (氛围) on his own. “I just talked to myself as if I were in a conversation,” he said.
Lai also thought of ways to improve his skills. He used English to describe everything he saw. He even translated (翻译) speeches when he went to class meetings at the military school. He also read and listened to English news to learn new expressions.
“There is no other way to learn a language well. You have to practice,” Lai said.

March 21st is World Forest Day. This special day reminds us how important forests are to our planet. Forests cover about 30% of the earth’s land. They are home to more than 80% of all animals and plants on land.
Why are forests so important? First, forests help keep the air clean. Trees take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen. Without forests, the air would become polluted and hard to breathe. Second, forests protect the soil. Tree roots hold the soil together and stop it from being washed away by rain. Third, forests provide us with many things we use every day, such as wood, paper, and medicine.
But forests are in danger. Every year, people cut down millions of trees for farming, building, and making products. When forests disappear, animals lose their homes, and the land becomes dry and poor.
What can we do to help? Here are some simple ideas:
Plant a tree in your neighborhood.
Use both sides of paper to save trees.
Say no to products made from endangered trees.

One of the most surprising trees in the world is known as the baobab (猴面包树). This kind of tree mainly grows in South Africa and Australia.
Sometimes, it is hard to tell what the name of a tree is because they look like each other. But this is not a problem with the baobab. Its appearance is quite different, so people can’t mistake it for another tree. The baobab is very wide. People often enjoy the shade (树荫) under it. One Australian baobab was so large that people were able to turn part of the tree into a small room. The tree itself was so strong and wide that it could hold a large group of people. The strongest tree in the world is over 1,835 years old now.
People also call it the “giving tree”. The tree’s fruits are very delicious and a tasty treat in many African countries. The fruits are also very healthy and people make porridge (粥) and soft drinks from the fruits. Since the tree grows in dry environments, it has to store water. The tree soaks (浸泡) in water when the weather is wet. During dry seasons, the baobab tree can use the stored water. Some baobabs can store thousands of gallons (加仑) of water and people can get the water from the trees when they need it.
Sadly, in recent years, the baobab trees are dying because of climate (气候) change. Scientists are trying hard to take action to save them.

65.How does the baobab tree store water when the weather is wet?

In 2024, a new kind of plastic was invented that can break down (分解) in seawater. This is great news for our oceans, which are filled with millions of tons of plastic waste.
The new plastic is called “Marine-D”, and it is made from plant materials. Unlike traditional plastic, Marine-D breaks down naturally in seawater within three to five years. Traditional plastic can take hundreds of years to break down, and it causes serious problems for marine life.
Scientists at a British university developed Marine-D.They spent five years researching and testing different materials. “We wanted to create a plastic that would help solve the problem of ocean pollution,” said Dr. Lucy Jones, one of the lead scientists.
Marine-D can be used to make many things, such as shopping bags, bottles, and packaging. It is strong and durable (耐用的), just like traditional plastic, but it is much better for the environment.
However, Marine-D is not perfect. It only breaks down in seawater, so it should not be thrown into landfills (垃圾填埋场). Scientists are now working on a new version (版本) that can break down in both seawater and landfills.
Experts say that Marine-D is an important step forward, but it is not the only solution to ocean pollution. We still need to reduce the amount of plastic we use and improve recycling. “Marine-D can help, but we all need to take responsibility for protecting our oceans,” said Dr. Jones.
